Abstract:Expansive soils occur in climatic zones characterized by alternate wet and dry seasons. The expansive soils experience periodic swelling and shrinkage during the alternate wet and dry seasons. This paper investigates the effect of cyclic wetting and drying on the expansive characteristics of compacted expansive soils in Hefei. The test results show that after each cycle, the height of the soil sample increased. This indicates that the swell-shrink behavior of expansive soils are not completely reversible. The relative swell potential and axial shrinkage percentage decreased after each cycle, and the microstructure of tested expansive soils changed in cyclic swell-shrink.Furthermore,it is identified that the first cycle causes the most reduction in relative swell potential and axial shrinkage percentage and the largest change in microstructure.
