Abstract:In a recent paper we proved that for certain class of perturbations of the hyperbolic equation u t = f ( u ) u x , there exist changes of coordinate, called quasi-Miura transformations, that reduce the perturbed equations to the unperturbed one. We prove in the present paper that if in addition the perturbed equations possess Hamiltonian structures of certain type, the same quasi-Miura transformations also reduce the Hamiltonian structures to their leading terms. By applying this result, we obtain a criterion of the existence of Hamiltonian structures for a class of scalar evolutionary PDEs and an algorithm to find out the Hamiltonian structures.

Abstract:For an integrable hierarchy which possesses a bihamiltonian structure with semisimple hydrodynamic limit, we prove that the linear reciprocal transformation with respect to any of its symmetry transforms it to another bihamiltonian integrable hierarchy. Moreover, we show that the central invariants of the bihamiltonian structure are preserved under such a linear reciprocal transformation.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate multidimensional first-order quasi-linear systems and find necessary conditions for them to admit Hamiltonian formulation. The insufficiency of the conditions is related to the Poisson cohomology of the admissible Hamiltonian operators. We present in detail the examples of two-dimensional, two-components systems of hydrodynamic type and of a real reduction of the 3-waves system.

Abstract:By using the saddle point theorem, some new existence theorems are obtained for second-order Hamiltonian systems with impulsive effects in the cases when the gradient of the nonlinearity grows sublinearly and grows linearly respectively. Our results generalize some existing results and our conditions on the potential are rather relaxed.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the notion of infinite dimensional Jacobi structure to describe the geometrical structure of a class of nonlocal Hamiltonian systems which appear naturally when applying reciprocal transformations to Hamiltonian evolutionary PDEs. We prove that our class of infinite dimensional Jacobi structures is invariant under the action of reciprocal transformations that only change the spatial variable. The main technical tool is in a suitable generalization of the classical Schouten–Nijenhuis bracket to the space of the so called quasi-local multi-vectors, and a simple realization of this structure in the framework of supermanifolds. These constructions are used to compute the Lichnerowicz–Jacobi cohomologies and to prove a Darboux theorem for Jacobi structures with hydrodynamic leading terms. We also introduce the notion of bi-Jacobi structures, and consider the integrability of a system of evolutionary PDEs that possesses a bi-Jacobi structure.

Abstract:We study a class of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) that admit the same bi-Hamiltonian structure as the Witten–Dijkgraaf–Verlinde–Verlinde (WDVV) equations: a Ferapontov-type first-order Hamiltonian operator and a homogeneous third-order Hamiltonian operator in a canonical Doyle–Potëmin form, which are compatible. Using various equivalence groups, we classify such equations in two-component and three-component cases. In a four-component case we add further evidence to the conjecture that there exists only one integrable system of the above type. Finally, we give an example of the six-component system with required bi-Hamiltonian structure. To streamline the symbolic computation, we develop an algorithm to find the aforementioned Hamiltonian operators, which includes putting forward a conjecture on the structure of the metric parameterizing the first-order Hamiltonian operator.

Abstract:For a class of super skew-symmetric operators with eight parameters, two kinds of super Hamiltonian operators are identified by the method of functional multi-vectors. Appropriate decompositions of these operators lead to compatible super Hamiltonian pairs which in turn produce nonlinear super bi-Hamiltonian systems from the trivial x-translation flow. As examples, besides the super Korteweg–de Vries equations and other known ones, new super generalizations are obtained for the Riemann equation, the Hunter–Saxton equation and the Camassa–Holm equation, all of them admit two compatible local super Hamiltonian operators.

Abstract:The differential equations expressing the relations of velocity components and streamfunction for incompressible two-dimensional flow are typical one-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system.The streamfunction was expanded in Taylor series.The streamline patterns and their bifurcations were examined using methods from nonlinear system dynamics.Based on the small parameter canonical transformations in the physical flow plane,the normal form expressions of streamfunction and simplified differential equations were derived for the degenerate critical points.Some general characteristics of the simplified system were analyzed.

Suppose that H,b and V depend periodically on t and x, and that H(t,x,z) is superquadratic in z as |z|→∞. Without a symmetry assumption on H, we establish the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct solutions via a variational approach.

Abstract:We present some general results on properties of the bihamiltonian cohomologies associated to bihamiltonian structures of hydrodynamic type, and compute the third cohomology for the bihamiltonian structure of the dispersionless KdV hierarchy. The result of the computation enables us to prove the existence of bihamiltonian deformations of the dispersionless KdV hierarchy starting from any of its infinitesimal deformations.

Abstract:In this paper we study the numerical transition from a Hamilton--Jacobi (H--J) equation to its associated system of conservation laws in arbitrary space dimensions. We first study how, in a very generic setting, one can recover the viscosity solutions of the H--J equation using the numerical solutions to the system of conservation laws. We then introduce a simple, second-order relaxation scheme to solve the underlying weakly hyperbolic system of conservation laws.

Abstract:We study the Harry Dym hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations from the bi-Hamiltonian view point. This is done by using the concept of an S-hierarchy. It allows us to define a matrix Harry Dym hierarchy of commuting Hamiltonian flows in two fields that projects onto the scalar Harry Dym hierarchy. We also show that the conserved densities of the matrix Harry Dym equation can be found by means of a Riccati-type equation.

Abstract:When both Hamiltonian operators of a bi-Hamiltonian system are pure differential operators, we show that the generalized Kupershmidt deformation (GKD) developed from the Kupershmidt deformation in \cite{kd} offers an useful way to construct new integrable system starting from the bi-Hamiltonian system. We construct some new integrable systems by means of the generalized Kupershmidt deformation in the cases of Harry Dym hierarchy, classical Boussinesq hierarchy and coupled KdV hierarchy. We show that the GKD of Harry Dym equation, GKD of classical Boussinesq equation and GKD of coupled KdV equation are equivalent to the new integrable Rosochatius deformations of these soliton equations with self-consistent sources. We present the Lax Pair for these new systems. Therefore the generalized Kupershmidt deformation provides a new way to construct new integrable systems from bi-Hamiltonian systems and also offers a new approach to obtain the Rosochatius deformation of soliton equation with self-consistent sources.

Bifurcation of Relative Equilibria in Mechanical Systems with Symmetry

Abstract:The relative equilibria of a symmetric Hamiltonian dynamical system are the critical points of the so-called augmented Hamiltonian. The underlying geometric structure of the system is used to decompose the critical point equations and construct a collection of implicitly defined functions and reduced equations describing the set of relative equilibria in a neighborhood of a given relative equilibrium. The structure of the reduced equations is studied in a few relevant situations. In particular, a persistence result of Lerman and Singer [LS98] is generalized to the framework of Abelian proper actions. Also, a Hamiltonian version of the Equivariant Branching Lemma and a study of bifurcations with maximal isotropy are presented. An elementary example is presented to illustrate the use of this approach.

The symplectic algorithm of the Hamiltonian systems is extended into that of the Birkhoffian systems. Abstract:An isospectral problem and the associated hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations is presented. As a reduction, a new generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is obtained. It is shown that the hierarchy possesses bi-Hamiltonian structure and is integrable in Liouville sense. Moreover, the eigenvalue problem can be nonlinearized as a finite-dimensional completely integrable system under the Bargmann constraint between the potentials and the eigenvalues.
