Abstract:Climate and land use changes will affect the hydrological regime, and therefore hydropower. This study which aims to develop a novel modeling framework, does not only determine the changes in hydropower generation and sustainability, but also provide robust operating rules for handling uncertainty attributed to both climate and land use changes, using Xinanjiang Reservoir in Eastern China as a case study. Specifically, projections of five bias-corrected and downscaled General Circulation Models (GCMs) and three modeled land uses representing a range of tradeoffs between ecological protection and urban development are employed to drive the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and to predict streamflow under 15 scenarios. We then develop a set of robust rule curves to consider the potential uncertainty in reservoir inflow and to increase hydropower generation, and a baseline rule is presented for comparison. Results show that both robust and baseline rules increase hydropower generation with increasing reservoir inflows in future, but the robust rule yields better hydropower generation, sustainability and efficiency. The streamflow under the rapid urbanization scenarios differs from that under other scenarios, but there are no significant differences in hydropower among scenarios corresponding to the non-linear relationship between streamflow and hydropower change. Our findings highlight the potential to improve water resource utilization in the future, especially based on the robust operating rule considering optimization and uncertainty, and can provide references for future hydropower planning to the other existing plants.

Abstract:Based on theoretical research and practical experience in China and abroad, hydropower sustain-ability assessment can be a proper solution for ecological environmental issues and immigration problems, and can provide a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable way for China's hydropower. The Yangtze River basin hydro-power development plays important part in China's hydropower progress. Combined with the domestic situation, the paper proposes the hydropower sustainability assessment system covering the process of planning, design, construc-tion and operation. Through the case study on Wujiang river hydropower development, this system has proved can i-dentify and summarize the experience and problems in the respect of management, economy, society and environ-ment in hydropower developing, and can provide decision-making reference for governors, so that to achieve the maximization of management benefit, economic benefit, social benefit and environmental benefit, and the sustain-able development of Yangtze River basin.

Abstract:Hydropower is the most economically developed renewable energy source in China. In the twenty-first century, the era of clean and low-carbon development, hydropower can meet the continuous growth of energy consumption and help China achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2060. In 2019, China's installed hydropower capacity was 358.04 GW, and hydropower consumption was 1.132 × 1016 kJ, with a growth rate of 5.5%, well above the global average of 0.8%. Although China's hydropower achievements are renowned worldwide, hydropower development in China still faces challenges in relation to environmental, technological, economic and social issues. In this paper, we first review the history, achievements and current situation of China's hydropower development and summarize the specific challenges mentioned above. Then, we take the Dadu River Hydropower Base as a case study. This project ranks fifth among China's 13 largest hydropower bases, and the construction of 14 cascade hydropower stations was completed in December 2020, accounting for 61.3% of the total planned installed capacity of 28 cascades, with 3 more still under construction (accounting for another 16.3%). We comprehensively describe the background, tasks and exploitation of hydropower development in the Dadu River basin and highlight current practices, including exploration of environmental protection and ecological restoration, technical innovation, supporting facility construction, economic promotion and resettlement. Finally, based on the identified practices and lessons, we propose feasible suggestions for China's future hydropower development.Graphic abstract

Demonstration Operation of Integrated Membrane System for Treatment of Source Water from Qiantang River during Tidal Periods

Abstract:Qiantang River is the main drinking water source for Hangzhou City. Current,the drinking water quality in Hangzhou City was affected seriously by seawater intrusion into Qiantang River during tidal periods and the industrial wastewater and sewage excessive discharge in the upstream and downstream of Hangzhou City. In order to ensure the safety of drinking water quality during tidal periods, a set of 500 m3/ d of drinking water treatment system and demonstration unit were designed and manufactured using integrated ultrafiltration,nanofiltration and reverse osmosis technologies. The system and demonstration unit were commissioned for nearly one year in Xiaoshan Third Waterworks of Hangzhou City. The operation results of the system and demonstration unit indicated that the system operation was stable, and the quality of produced water met the Standards for Drinking Water Standards( GB 5749- 2006). A new process was provided to enhance the drinking water quality and to ensure the water supply safety,especially to produced drinking water from source water during tidal periods. The experience was accumulated for enlargement,popularization and application of the water treatment system using integrated membrane technologies.

Abstract:In order to protect aquatic system health of Wujiang River and achieve the win-win goal of the water ener-gy resources development and ecological environment, the ecological operation of cascade hydropower stations along Wujiang River in Guizhou provience is studied. The minimum, suitable and ideal ecologically flow demands of the Hongjiadu, Wujiangdu and Silin stations were analyzed. And the multi-objective combination optimization scheduling model of Cascade Hydropower Stations there was built and solved. Mean annual and typical year generating capacity of 9 reservoirs are calculated. Ecological water period guaranteed rate and the scheduling process of 3 main control sec-tions are showed. The results show that this study can increase the ecological water period guaranteed rate of Wujiang River, as well as guarantee benefits of flood control and power generation. As for low flow year, it is hard to reach the ideal ecological flow demand.

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:Comprehensive investigation of hydrological processes associated with landscape ecology and economic development plays a key role in watershed management, and is less developed in watersheds with large-scale cascade dams. With the abundant hydropower resources and its unprecedented advantages, hydropower exploitation in the upper Yangtze River (Jinsha River) is critical to energy structure adjustment in China. Therefore, we integrated hydrological modeling, landscape ecology analysis, and economic analysis in the dammed Jinsha River. With climate variations in the Jinsha River Basin, the average flow near the uppermost dams in the mainstream grew from 796 m3 s−1 (1990s), to 918 m3 s−1 (2000s), and further to 1025 m3 s−1 (2010s). During 1991 to 2017, the source power in the headwater region grew slightly, but varied little in the downstream area. In the lower dammed Jinsha River, analysis of landscape indicators showed that the landscape was enriched, while the landscape type distribution was more uniform. Moreover, hydropower exploitation brought benefits to regional economic development. Principal component analysis further highlighted the landscape ecological and economic variations with high loadings in the first principal component. With the non-significant temporal variations and normal spatial fluctuations in flow discharge, the landscape pattern was basically stable, and the utilization of hydropower can be sustainable in the Jinsha River. In addition, hydropower development drove local economic development. Based on the integrated analysis of hydrological, landscape ecological, and economic assessment at the watershed scale, our results stressed the significance of hydropower exploitation in the Jinsha River. However, more attention should be paid to the warming climate during hydropower exploitation. These findings are valuable for the scientific planning of hydropower bases in watersheds with large-scale cascade dams, and have substantial implications for sustainable hydropower development.

Abstract:The thesis researches the combined operation of integrated hydropower system which indudes the Three Gorges cascade stations and the Qingjiang cascade stations.To search the unified optimal operation of the integrated system, single and combined optimal operation models of two cascade stations are established.The dynamic programming with successive approximation model is applied to carry out the computation of individual subsystem optimization and optimization of integrated system.The calculation result based on the monthly runoff data from 1951 to 2002 show that the guaranteed output of the unified optimal operation is higher than the sum of two subsystems by 485.5MW.The annual energy output is elevated by 1.69×10~8kW·h if the subsystems has not been involved in the coordinative operation for adjusting the peak load,but it will be greatly elevated by 18.78×10~8kW·h if the subsystems are involved.The benefit is great.Besides,the benefits including the increase of power output in dry season,reduction of the power loss due to surplus water,as well as the improvement of flood control and navigation condition are also attained.

Abstract:A model experiment was carried out on the hydraulic structure layout of flood discharge and energy dissipation for the Shuibuya hydropower project.The characteristics of flow in the entrance of spillways,energy dissipation zone and downstream the dam toe were studied.Jet flow,scour and deposition in the energy dissipation zone as well as pulsation pressure and frequency against the anti-scour walls were measured and analyzed in order to solve the problems of flood discharge and energy dissipation for the Shuibuya Hydropower project.

Abstract:Hydropower development in the lower Jinsha River is of great significance to carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. It is a significant contribution to the formation of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system and the promotion of coordinated economic and social development in the western regions. Aimed at the challenges in hydropower construction to the "four high, three big, two sides and one strict" management, this paper summarizes the practical experience of hydropower development in this reach, and presents a comprehensive analysis of engineering construction risk and project entity construction management ability. The main results involve engineering construction management concepts, project management modes, green hydropower practices, and industry-collegeinstitute collaborative innovation mechanism, etc. These practices are based on the effective solution of key problems and technical and management challenges, ensuring smooth construction and on-schedule power generation of the hydropower stations in the lower Jinsha River. Our research findings may also be applicable to development and construction of similar river basin projects.

Abstract:<p>As ecological civilization construction receives growing attention in China, the eco‐friendliness of the power supply structure is becoming increasingly important. Thermal power and hydropower are the two major power sources in China. Hydropower has both positive and negative effects on the ecosystem. However, there are few studies on the comprehensive impact of hydropower on the ecosystem. Therefore, the main innovation of this article is to integrally and comprehensively study the impact of hydropower to propose recommendations for hydropower development. The study of hydropower's effects on the overall ecosystem including resources, the environment, and economic society reflects the integrity, and the simultaneous study of hydropower's positive and negative effects reflects the comprehensiveness. First, this paper constructs a system dynamics (SD) model that can analyze the impact of replacing thermal power with hydropower on the ecosystem and proposes an improved coupling coordination degree (CCD) model. Then, this paper takes the province of Fujian as an example for SD scenario simulation and proposes recommendations for each indicator in the ecology subsystem. Finally, this paper performs CCD analysis on subsystems of the ecology subsystem in different policy scenarios and provides suggestions for future hydropower development in Fujian. Results show that hydropower technology improvement and efficiency increase (HTIEI) is more conducive to the development of the overall ecosystem. The scientificity of the current hydropower policy in Fujian is proven through theoretical analysis, and further hydropower development proposals are proposed. This paper provides a basis for the formulation of power generation policies and promotes ecological civilization construction for Fujian. The proposed methods in this paper can also provide tools for policy research on clean energy power generation.</p>

Abstract:It was analyzed at first the necessities developing of low-carbon green renewable energy in China as well as the exploring status of traditional hydropower and renewable energy power briefly. Then the supporting and coordinated operation of hydropower for the intermittent wind and photovoltaic power were studied. The results showed that hydropower played an important role in promoting the development of wind and photovoltaic power, and could increase the electric supply rate of renewable energy. For the very wide scope of regional power grid covering a few provinces, it is necessary to research the total capacity of all hydropower stations systematically in the grid to balance the intermittent energy, because it is an important guaranty to keep the operating of the renewable energy in grid safely and stably. By dispatching, water power should take the task of peak load as much as possible in order to reduce the peak load share of fossil energy. In addition, the calculation results related to Qinghai province showed that the balance capacities of cascade hydropower stations varied in seasons and years. In some years of the future, although the total supply capacity of electricity in the regional grid could not meet the total load demand, at same time, the intermittent electric power had to be discarded. The contradictory phenomenon could be resolved by pumped storage schemes. From the point of views of resources and environment, it was also suggested that seawater or salt lake water pumped storages in some appropriate region could be constructed in China.

Abstract:There are plenty of natural water resources in the mountainous areas of Japan,but it is difficulty to develop and utilize the water resources because of the limitation of the climate and topographical condition.In order to enhance the development and utilization rate of water resources in these areas,it is necessary to study on developing small-scale or miniature hydraulic engineering.The different structures and diverse types of mountain stream diversion works which were developed in the recent several dozens of years in Japan are introduced,the characteristics of structure and water intake of bar-screen typed mountain stream diversion works which are widely applied in sandy rivers in the areas,as well as the pattern of water resources development and utilization that is based on the groups of mountain stream diversion works and reservoirs are reviewed comprehensively.It is suitable for the water resources development and utilization in the similar mountainous areas of China.

Abstract:There is a rapidly increasing demand for hydropower in China. However, little research has been conducted to systematically investigate the overall aspects of hydropower development risks. With support of the data collected from a fieldwork survey, this study reports the multiple facets of hydropower development risks in China as perceived by main project participants. All groups have a common view on the criticality of safety, and the groups also have their own priorities, i.e., resettlement of migrants, incompetence of subcontractors, project delay, inadequate or incorrect design, premature failure of facilities and ecological and environmental impacts are the key risks to clients, whereas quality of work, financial related risks, reputation, and claims and disputes are the main concerns to contractors. A case study of Three Gorges Project further demonstrates that, hydropower development risks can be effectively managed by encouraging joint efforts of all participants to achieve the goals on producing renewable energy, reducing emissions of CO2, and providing important social/economical benefits. Future hydropower development should emphasize the interactions between project delivery, environmental, and economical processes to reach appropriate trade-offs among involving stakeholders, by adequately considering the inter-relations between project participants' risks as well as hydropower project's externalities on a broad view.

Abstract:This paper presents a "health and harmony" concept for hydro power resource utilization with an evaluation system proposed including 24 indicators based on the consideration of three features of hydro power resource, serving human society, compensating ecological environment of healthy rivers, and developing harmony between nature and social development. An evaluation process for hydro power resource development and hydro power plant operation management was designed using the indicator system, which can be used to determine the hydro power resource utilization evaluation level in a reach or an area. The indicator system was also used to evaluate the hydro power resource utilization planning for a tributary of Zishui River, Fuyishui River, with the sequencing scheme of hydro power resource development and operation of various power stations in the area being obtained. The results can provide technological references for the hydro power resource utilization in the Fuyishui River reach in the future.

Abstract:Hydropower, a renewable energy resource, underpins China's economic and social advancement, gaining prominence amidst the country's energy structure metamorphosis. Enhancing the performance of hydropower development projects is imperative, with the mechanisms of learning and innovation wielding a substantial impact. The extant literature on how learning and innovation affect hydropower project performance remains nebulous, lacking a systematic model to elucidate these impact mechanisms. This investigation melds theoretical analysis with the idiosyncrasies of hydropower project development, forging a theoretical model to decipher the interplay of learning, innovation, and project performance. Employing a mixed-methods approach, we probe the influence of organizational learning orientation and individual learning on participant capabilities, engineering innovation magnitude, and overall project performance. Path analysis divulges that organizational learning orientation catalyzes individual learning, jointly enhancing engineering innovation and project performance directly, although the effect on each participant's capability necessitates mediation through the engineering innovation level. This pioneering study establishes the links and influence trajectories between learning, innovation, and project performance, systematically delineating them. It fills a scholarly void in exploring learning and innovation mechanisms within hydropower project development, propounding strategies to augment project efficiency and furnishing pragmatic, constructive insights for better engineering practice outputs.

Abstract:Hydropower is a clean and renewable energy source. Considering the economic, technical and environmental benefits of hydropower, most countries give priority to its development. China has the richest hydro resources on the planet with a total theoretical hydropower potential of 694GW. Developing hydropower is of great importance to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution resulting from the rapid economic growth of China in the 21st century. This paper provides a survey of hydropower development in China. Over the last five decades, China’s hydropower has developed quickly. The installed capacity of hydropower is 145.26GW presently. Some large hydropower plants have been in operation and many are still under construction, including the Three Gorges Project (TGP) and pumped-storage power stations. Small hydropower development accelerates rural electrification of this country.

Abstract:Based on the emergency rescue, the subsequent disposal, and the development and utilization projects of the Hongshiyan Landside Dam in Ludian, Yunnan, China, research has been conducted on key technical issues facing the development and utilization of landside dams, including the possibilty evaluation of development and utilization, structure analysis of wide gradation material, performance evaluation, investigation and design, dam seepage control, construction technology and equipment, and safe operation assessment. And innovative results has made in all seven aspects mentioned above, writing the history in this field. The achievements were directly applied to the development planning, investigation and design, construction, and operation and maintenance of the Hongshiyan Landside Dam, a comprehensive water conservancy project that integrates flood control, water supply, irrigation, and power generation, with significant comprehensive benefits.
