Abstract:Bioprinting is expected to be a revolutionary technology for application in medicine, bringing hope to countless patients. For a long time, many patients have been experiencing a lack of suitable organs for transplantation, which eventually lead to loss of lives. Bioprinting technology can integrate cells, proteins, cytokines, and other supporting materials, such as biomaterials and hydrogels, to produce biomedical devices with biological functions. However, no bioprinting medical devices have been approved by the National Medical Products Administration, with specific registration and regulatory requirements for bioprinting medical devices still needing to be explored. To standardize the Bioprinting Medical Devices Special Requirements for Quality Management System, Chinese experts in relevant fields were organized to formulate this expert consensus.

Abstract:In recent years, China has made great progress in basic nanomedicine, nanotoxicology and nanobiology research. Nanotechnology has been continuously applied in biomaterial and medical device, more and more medical devices applying nanomaterials are developed and manufactured. In order to gain more comprehension and accurate understanding of the research and industrial development in nanobiomaterial medical devices, this study reviewed the common nanomaterial in medical devices and the regulatory situation of nanomaterial medical devices at home and abroad, and discussed the current challenges in biological evaluation of nanomaterial medical devices, with a view to providing ideas for the safety evaluation and research of related products.

Abstract:Determining what biological testing is required for the development and approval of a new medical device can be complex. Biological evaluation of medical devices is governed by standards such as ISO 10993, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Notifications and Ordinances, and China’s GB/T 16886 national standards. This chapter highlights the processes and steps involved in the evaluation of new medical devices and materials. It discusses how chemical characterization and toxicology data are used to evaluate risk and establish biocompatibility. A detailed overview of the development of biological evaluation plans and reports is described along with biological evaluations of combination products. In addition, information about new tools, special topics, and future trends are included. Plus, a list of sources for scientific, regulatory, and industry information is provided.

Abstract:The interaction of biomaterials and tissues has been the focus of biomaterial science for many years and formed the foundation of the subject of biocompatibility. The research about biomaterials provides better basis for biomedical devices by the understanding of biocompatibility phenomena. In this paper, over 50 years of experience with such devices is analysed and it is shown that, in the vast majority of circumstances, the sole requirement for biocompatibility in a medical device intended for long-term contact with the tissues of the human body is that no harm should be brought to those tissues. Only a few bio-active biomaterials has been applied successfully in clinics. This artical gives a review on the application of biomaterials in tissue engineering,sophisticated cells, drug and gene delivery systems and in biotechnology. Interactions between biomaterials and tissue components is discussed as well.

Abstract:As one of the most important strategies of no drug therapy,biomaterials have drawn extensive application in clinical use.Current animal tests and assays of cell level haven't reached the satisfying depth on the mechanism of biocompatibility and material-host interaction.As the typical method of post-genome era,proteomics contributed to investigation in the biomarker of diseases and the global theory of physiological function and drug effect.Along with the increase of the inquiry of biomaterial,high quality evaluation of bio-effects and the reliability is required.Utilizing proteomic method to study the dynamic variation of the whole proteins after contacting with certain biomaterial is an effective means to explore the direction of its further improvement.This review summarizes most representative studies on function and biocompatibility of biomaterials and focus on the application in dental implant materials,which indicate the significance of the combination of the biomaterials development and the progressive biology assay technique.

Abstract:The timely evaluation of the medical devices for biological safety is the need of the hour. The medical device regulation (MDR) in combination with the recent modification of ISO 10993 series into the assessment of the safety of medical devices biologically. The manufacturers need to follow all the approach in testing the devices before entering into the open market with their risk strategies. Right from the packing till it is inserted for its indented use in human, it has to be carefully tested and evaluated and is found to fit with the standard criteria. This chapter will throw insights in various aspects of biological evaluation of medical devices under each subheadings.

Abstract:In the paper, we summarize the developmental process of biomedical materials, and put forward the development direction of bio-medical material in the future. Third-generation biomedical materials possess two properties: degradation and bioactivity, and it can help the body heal itself once implanted. Reproduction of tissue and organ in tissue engineering is a rapidly advancing filed that opens new and exciting opportunities of regenerative medicine and biomedical materials.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the progress in biological tissue engineering scaffold materials and the clinical application, as well as product development status.METHODS:Based on extensive investigation in the status of research and application of biological tissue engineering scaffold materials, a comprehensive analysis was made. Meanwhile, a detailed analysis of research and product development was presented.RESULTS:Considerable progress has been achieved in research, products transformation, clinical application, and supervision of biological scaffold for tissue engineering. New directions, new technology, and new products are constantly emerging. With the continuous progress of science and technology and continuous improvement of life sciences theory, the new direction and new focus still need to be continuously adjusted in order to meet the clinical needs.CONCLUSION:From the aspect of industrial transformation feasibility, acellular scaffolds and extracellular matrix are the most promising new growth of both research and product development in this field.

Abstract:Various modifications have been performed on biomaterials to improve their applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, the challenges of immunogenicity and biocompatibility existed since the application of biomaterials. As a method to solve this problem, the decellularization process removes most living cells from biomaterials to minimize their immunogenicity; and preserves the native structures and compositions that favour cell growth and the subsequent construction of functional tissue. On the other hand, genetic modification of biomaterials aims to achieve specific functions (low immunogenicity, osteogenesis, etc.) or analyse the genetic mechanisms underlying some diseases (cardiac dysfunction, liver fibrosis, etc.). The combination of decellularization and gene modification is highly superior to biomaterials; thus, we must obtain a deeper understanding of these novel biomaterials. In this review, we summarize the fabrication approaches and current applications of genetically modified decellularized biomaterials and then discuss their disadvantages and corresponding future perspectives.

Abstract:Nanobiomaterials, as nanotechnology-derived biomaterials, are referred to those biomaterials whose structures or components exhibit novel and significantly changed properties when their dimensions are at the nanoscale (1-100 nm). Hence, due to the unique features, nanobiomaterials have been extensively applied to targeted drug delivery, medical imaging, tissue engineering, biosensing as well as cosmetics over the past few decades. Meanwhile, the new characteristics of nanobiomaterials can also bring potential risks in biological safety together with performance. Currently, China has played a large role in the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology in the world in quite a lot of benefits related fields since there are the most abundant nano-related publications. Additionally, since National Technical Committee 279 on Nanotechnology of Standardization Administration of China was founded in 2005, China has released more than 100 national standards in the field of nanobiomaterials and over 30 related national standard plans are under development. Moreover, the industry standards for medical devices containing nanomaterials in China have been vigorously pushed forward. In the past China tended to publish scientific papers for original research, but now analytic data have shown an exponential growth in the nanobiomaterials related patents, about more than 1700 cases. However, nanotechnology translation is far behind in our country. There are very few real nano-products in the biomedical field. As for the translation from nanobiomaterials to biomedical applications, there are still so many critical issues which need to be addressed urgently, mainly including quality control and biosafety evaluation. The major challenges consist in the accurate measurement of physicochemical properties for nanobiomaterials and the setup of nanobiosafety knowledge system. Although some advanced techniques can give a valuable understanding of nanobiomaterials, especially for some special scenarios involving the presence of nanobiomaterials in complex matrices to confirm nanocontent labeling as well as nanobiomaterial release from medical devices and so on. The repeatability and applicability of these measurements based on advanced techniques are still limited so far, which can be improved by standardized testing. In addition, there is still a lack of standardized biological assays as well as experimental animal models for biosafety evaluation. Standardization is the bridge of innovation-driven development as an indispensable way to achieving the repeatability and reproducibility of new technologies and large-scale production. It can also push the marketization and internationalization of these new advanced technologies and be very helpful to promote China transformation from "Made in China" to "Chinese Standards". Therefore, the standardized testing will definitely provide much more accurate and reliable information regarding the characterization of physicochemical properties and risk-benefit evaluation of nanobiomaterials. In order to offer a strong support and reference for nanobiomaterial development and nanotechnology translation in our country, this review summarizes the current situation of standardized testing, existing issues and development trend of physicochemical characterization and biosafety evaluation for nanobiomaterials as well as the related products. As new strategic and cutting-edge materials around the world, the development and application of nanobiomaterials will be bound to further improve the overall medical efficiency and support the national strategy of healthy in China in the future.

Abstract:Biomaterials are natural, synthetic, or hybrid materials, which are used in medical devices or implants that are placed in contact with the human biological system to compensate for or restore diminished functions of the body. The field of biomaterials has rapidly developed to meet the ever-expanding needs in healthcare and medicine practices. Advancements in science and technology have enabled the fabrication and reengineering of biomaterials into useful medical devices or implants, such as heart valves, bone plates, hip joints, and cardiac pacemakers. Because biomaterials are placed in continuous close contact with the recipient’s body fluids or tissues, the classification of available biomaterials is crucial for selecting safer and highly biocompatible materials. This review focuses on biomaterial classification, namely bioceramic, polymeric, and metallic biomaterials. Their medical applications, advantages, and disadvantages are discussed. Current trends in biomaterials involved in disease treatments, such as controlled drug delivery and cancer therapy, are additionally explored.

Abstract:Tissue engineering advance in supplying the reparative and reconstructive medicine with promising tissue engineered medical products(TEMPs) and the new therapy alternative. The related supervision and administration of TEMPs is being developed and the standard research of TEMPs is also in progress. The Food and Drug Administration(FDA) of the United States has treated TEMPs as combined products and supervised them according to the level of risk to patients. Lately, FDA has determined that the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) should take charge of examination and approval of TEMPs, with the cooperation of the Center for Biological Evaluations and Research(CBER). The regulatory controls have been established respectively in European Union and Japan. In China, TEMPs are identified as medical devices combined with cells. The Department of Medical Device of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) is responsible for the examination and approval of TEMPs, and National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical & Biological Products(NICPBP) is responsible for evaluation tests. The standards of TEMPs are formulated mainly by the American Society of Testing Materials(ASTM) and International Standardization Organization(ISO).

Abstract:In-vitro test is usually conducted as a preliminary screening test in the evaluation of the haemocompatibility of biomaterials for its short-term consuming, convenience and less expense. The selection of appropriate model for blood-biomaterial interaction, the choice of sensitive and specific parameters, and the minimization of additional blood activation are most important in the in-vitro test. In addition, the time and the style of blood-biomaterial interaction, the choice of sensitive and specific parameters, and the minimization of additional blood activation are most important in the in-vitro test. Abstract:The situations in which biomaterials are currently used are vastly different to those of just a decade ago. Although implantable medical devices are still immensely important, medical technologies now encompass a range of drug and gene delivery systems, tissue engineering and cell therapies, organ printing and cell patterning, nanotechnology based imaging and diagnostic systems and microelectronic devices. These technologies still encompass metals, ceramics and synthetic polymers, but also biopolymers, self assembled systems, nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and quantum dots. These changes imply that our original concepts of biomaterials and our expectations of their performance also have to change. This Leading Opinion Paper addresses these issues. It concludes that many substances which hitherto we may not have thought of as biomaterials should now be considered as such so that, alongside the traditional structural biomaterials, we have substances that have been engineered to perform functions within health care where their performance is directly controlled by interactions with tissues and tissue components. These include engineered tissues, cells, organs and even viruses. This essay develops the arguments for a radically different definition of a biomaterial.

Abstract:Ti-based biomaterial has been widely used as dental and bone implant material although its bioactivity still needs improvement especially for dental implant. The bone morphogenetic proteins(BMPs) bound to Ti-based materials will attract the mesenchymal stem cells to differentiate into osteoblast cells, which benefits the response to the protein-material surface, and finally leads to new bone formation. Several methods including physically mixing, coating, plasma immobilization and cross-linking were used to investigate how BMPs bind to Ti-based biomaterials. The latest research papers are focused on the structure and function of BMPs, and the methods to bind BMPs to Ti-based biomaterial and the evaluation methods after protein immobilization are reviewed in this paper.

Abstract:This review systematically summarizes current biological evaluation methods, emphasizing the potential of microfluidic technologies and organ‐on‐a‐chip systems in material biological assessment. It provides a detailed discussion of the challenges and opportunities associated with employing organ‐on‐a‐chip systems in the field of material evaluation. Biological evaluation of biomedical materials faces constraints imposed by the limitations of traditional in vitro and animal experiments. Currently, miniaturized and biomimetic microfluidic technologies and organ‐on‐chip systems have garnered widespread attention in the field of drug development. However, their exploration in the context of biomedical material evaluation and medical device development remains relatively limited. In this review, a summary of existing biological evaluation methods, highlighting their respective advantages and drawbacks is provided. The application of microfluidic technologies in the evaluation of biomedical materials, emphasizing the potential of organ‐on‐chip systems as highly biomimetic in vitro models in material evaluation is then focused. Finally, the challenges and opportunities associated with utilizing organ‐on‐chip systems to evaluate biomedical materials in the field of material evaluation are discussed. In conclusion, the integration of advanced microfluidic technologies and organ‐on‐chip systems presents a potential paradigm shift in the biological assessment of biomedical materials, offering the prospective of more accurate and predictive in vitro models in the development of medical devices.
