Abstract:In digital image processing , edge detection is one of the most important stages .The Sobel edge detection operator is most widely used edge detection algorithm because of its advantages , such as simple calculation ,and it extracts the edge clearly .It is very suitable for hardware implementation .But its ability to restrain noises is weak .It cannot adapt for many applications because the Sobel operator used a fixed value set beforehand as the binarization threshold .Based on the median filter and the all parallel sorting method , the system proposed in the paper can quickly extract the edge of an image .The method has successfully implemen-ted on FPGA.

Abstract:Abstract As the basic content of digital image processing, edge detection is increasingly applied in machine vision, face recognition, target tracking and other fields. In particular, edge detection based on Sobel operator is generally applied in industrial practices. However, most current edge detections based on PC-side serial processing are extremely arduous to satisfy real-time processing. This paper proposes FPGA implementation of eight-direction Sobel edge detection algorithm based on adaptive threshold. Specifically, an eight-direction Sobel edge detection algorithm based on adaptive threshold is presented. Subsequently, the specific process of implementing the algorithm on FPGA using the design philosophy of parallel pipeline is described. Finally, a comparison of the performance between traditional Sobel and improved algorithm reveals that the improved algorithm offers distinct advantages in accuracy and detection effectiveness, and the parallel implementation of FPGA hardware can obviously enhance the detection speed and fulfil the real-time requirement.

Abstract:As an image processing method, edge detection is widely used in object detection, image recognition, and machine vision. At present, the research on edge detection algorithms is still a hot spot in the field of image processing. In order to solve the problem that the large amount of salt and pepper noise in the image makes it difficult to identify the license plate of the vehicle entering and leaving the parking lot or on the road, and to identify the edges of important information more effectively, a traditional sobel operator edge detection algorithm is adopted and deployed on the Field programmable gate array(FPGA) platform with Xilinx’s xc7a35tcsg324 as the main control chip. In this paper, the original image is converted into gray image by FPGA-based gray-scale conversion algorithm, and then the mean filtering algorithm and median filtering algorithm based on FPAG are adopted. By comparing the experimental results under 0.02 salt and pepper noise, it is concluded that the median filtering method can effectively filter out salt and pepper noise. After median filtering, the sobel edge detection algorithm is used. It is found that the sobel after median filtering is more obvious than the sobel before median filtering, and a lot of salt and pepper noise is filtered out.

Abstract:Analyzing video feeds from large camera networks requires enormous compute and bandwidth. Edge computing has been proposed to ease the burden by bringing resources to the proximity of data. However, the number of cameras keeps growing and the associated computing resources on edge will again fall in short. To fundamentally solve the resource scarcity problem and make edge-based live video analytics scalable, we present an FPGA-based smart camera design that enables efficient in-situ streaming processing to meet the stringent low-power, energy-efficient, low-latency requirements of edge vision applications. By leveraging FPGA's intrinsic properties of architecture efficiency and exploiting its hardware support for parallelism, we demonstrate a 49x speedup over CPU and 6.4x more energy-efficiency than GPU, verified using a background subtraction algorithm.

Abstract:Studied in accordance with computer vision system, this article puts forward the major problems existing in the hardware embodying levels of vision system. Then it explores new ideas in resolving these problems, and puts forward a vision processing system based on FPGA in the need of stereo vision system. As FPGA can be reconstructed freely, it can take charge of some computing work to strengthen the real time issue of visual processing. The system can be well applied to 3-D stereo vision system as a front-end graphic grabbing device and co-processor.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems that the image processing system in the field of machine vision has high real-time requirement,and the traditional FPGA design needs long development cycle,but high level synthesis (HLS) provides a new way to accelerate the machine vision algorithm.Based on ZC706 development Platform and SDSoC development environment of Xilinx,this paper uses some optimization methods such as pipeline,loop unrolling,parallelism,line buffer and window buffer co-processing to realize hardware acceleration of the Sobel edge detection and Harris corner detection algorithm,which are widely used in the machine vision field.The experimental results show that the speed-up ratios of FPGA implementation based on HLS method for Sobel and Harris can reach 7.37 and 19.41,respectively,compared with software implementation in ARM platform.It can meet the requirements of real-time performance in the field of machine vision.

Abstract:Image filtering and edge detection are the key procedures in complex vision processing,such as road edge and obstacle detection in vision-based navigation systems. Its performance and processing time directly affect the performance of the subsequent image processing and the total response time for vision-based navigation systems. An implementation of real-time image filtering and edge detection based on FPGA is proposed, which decomposes the LoG template into two one-dimension templates to decrease the calculating amount. Taking full advantage of the parallel operating character and the abundance on-chip RAM resource of FPGA, the distributed arithmetic is introduced, which establishes a look-up-table to take the place of the multiplication. Experiment results show this method satisfies the real-time requirements, and can be applied to other template convolution based image processing algorithms.

Abstract:Horizon edge localization accuracy and speed are key factors in the performance of horizon sensors. This paper proposes a high-performance sub-pixel edge localization algorithm base on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for horizon sensors. The algorithm is carefully designed and simplified according to the computational capabilities and limitations of FPGAs. By making full use of the parallel computing capability of FPGA and carrying out multi-stage pipeline design, the algorithm can complete image acquisition, rough edge localization, sub-pixel edge localization, and projections from pixel points to unit vectors at the same time, which greatly reduces the delay caused by image processing. The experimental results show that FPGA-based image processing shows a significant superiority in terms of speed compared to traditional embedded processors.
A Digital Fuzzy Edge Detector for Color Images

Abstract:Edge detection is a classic problem in the field of image processing, which lays foundations for other tasks such as image segmentation. Conventionally, this operation is performed using gradient operators such as the Roberts or Sobel operator, which can discover local changes in intensity levels. These operators, however, perform poorly on low contrast images. In this paper, we propose an edge detector architecture for color images based on fuzzy theory and the Sobel operator. First, the R, G and B channels are extracted from an image and enhanced using fuzzy methods, in order to suppress noise and improve the contrast between the background and the objects. The Sobel operator is then applied to each of the channels, which are finally combined into an edge map of the origin image. Experimental results obtained through an FPGA-based implementation have proved the proposed method effective.

Efficient Edge Detection on Low-Cost FPGAs

Abstract:Improving the efficiency of edge detection in embedded applications, such as UAV control, is critical for reducing system cost and power dissipation. Field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) are a good platform for making improvements because of their specialised internal structure. However, current FPGA edge detectors do not exploit this structure well. A new edge detection architecture is proposed that is better optimised for FPGAs. The basis of the architecture is the Sobel edge kernels that are shown to be the most suitable because of their separability and absence of multiplications. Edge intensities are calculated with a new 4:2 compressor that consists of two custom-designed 3:2 compressors. Addition speed is increased by breaking carry propagation chains with look-ahead logic. Testing of the design showed it gives a 28% increase in speed and 4.4% reduction in area over previous equivalent designs, which demonstrated that it will lower the cost of edge detection systems, dissipate less power and still maintain high-speed control.

Abstract:Computer vision systems have several stages, and one of the operators used in these systems is the edge detection filter. High-performance computing is required in many applications and stages of computer vision systems, and many designs use FPGA technology to improve performance and decrease power consumption. In this context, this work presents an analysis of five edge detection filters synthesized to FPGA, including Laplacian, Roberts, Prewitt, Sobel, and Canny. In the experiments, we compared the hardware implementations with software versions to identify the impact of fixed-point representation on the quality of the output images. We have also assessed metrics regarding performance, silicon costs, and energy consumption. The results obtained show that the Laplacian filter has the lowest costs, while the Canny operator provides the best output image at the price of much higher silicon costs and energy consumption.

Abstract:In order to realize real-time depth detection of structured light system,simplify framework of structured light system and reduce cost,design structured light depth detection system based on field programmable gate array(FPGA).Structured light image processing algorithm is modified adapt to hardware,use pipe-lining technology of hardware system and parallel computing techniques,improve processing performance of system,propose ping-pang cache structure.Box filtering and parallel pixel processing computation increase processing speed,and ensure the real-time performance of algorithm.Experiment shows that this system can realize depth detection function and processing speed is far superior to software processing,which meets the real-time requirements.

Abstract:Image processing is an important task in data processing systems for applications such as medical sectors, remote sensing, and microscopy tomography. Edge recognition is a sort of image division method that is used to simplify the image records so as to reduce the amount of data to be processed. Edges are considered the most important in image processing because they are used to characterize the boundaries of an image. The performance of the Canny edge recognition algorithm remarkably surpasses the present edge recognition technology in various computer visualization methods. The main drawback of using Canny edge boundary is that it consumes lot of period due to its complex computation. In order to tackle this problem a hybrid edge recognition method is proposed in block stage to locate edges with no loss. It employs the Sobel operator estimate method to calculate the value and direction of the gradient by substituting complex processes by hardware cost savings, traditional non-maximum suppression adaptive thresholding block organization, and conventional hysteresis thresholding. Pipeline was presented to lessen latency. The planned strategy is simulated using Xilinx ISE Design Suite14.2 running on a Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA board. The synthesized architecture uses less hardware to detect edges and operates at maximum frequency of 935 MHz.

A distributed Canny edge detector: algorithm and FPGA implementation

Abstract:The Canny edge detector is one of the most widely used edge detection algorithms due to its superior performance. Unfortunately, not only is it computationally more intensive as compared with other edge detection algorithms, but it also has a higher latency because it is based on frame-level statistics. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to implement the Canny algorithm at the block level without any loss in edge detection performance compared with the original frame-level Canny algorithm. Directly applying the original Canny algorithm at the block-level leads to excessive edges in smooth regions and to loss of significant edges in high-detailed regions since the original Canny computes the high and low thresholds based on the frame-level statistics. To solve this problem, we present a distributed Canny edge detection algorithm that adaptively computes the edge detection thresholds based on the block type and the local distribution of the gradients in the image block. In addition, the new algorithm uses a nonuniform gradient magnitude histogram to compute block-based hysteresis thresholds. The resulting block-based algorithm has a significantly reduced latency and can be easily integrated with other block-based image codecs. It is capable of supporting fast edge detection of images and videos with high resolutions, including full-HD since the latency is now a function of the block size instead of the frame size. In addition, quantitative conformance evaluations and subjective tests show that the edge detection performance of the proposed algorithm is better than the original frame-based algorithm, especially when noise is present in the images. Finally, this algorithm is implemented using a 32 computing engine architecture and is synthesized on the Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA. The synthesized architecture takes only 0.721 ms (including the SRAM READ/WRITE time and the computation time) to detect edges of 512 × 512 images in the USC SIPI database when clocked at 100 MHz and is faster than existing FPGA and GPU implementations.

Abstract:With the development of modern science and technology, image processing technology has achieved great progress, has been widely used in ships and other traffic areas. As the ship navigation conditions are generally very complex, the image shot out is not clear enough, so needs image processing by processing technology. Aiming at the problem of image processing on ships, we researched the image processing algorithm based on FPGA and proposed a new fast filtering algorithm by horizontal expansion the window based on the existing bubble algorithm and the general algorithm of quick sort on, we passed through the QUARTUS9 software and MATLAB simulation experiments. The results showed that the new algorithm is better than in the speed of execution and the effect of image processing on the first two kinds of algorithms and this algorithm can improve the processing speed of FPGA image data effectively, can be easily applied to the image processing on ships.

Abstract:Digital image processing is known as computer manipulation of image, which includes algorithms like image enhancement and target reorganization. Some of these algorithms involve operations like convolution and edge detection, which requires high computation. Generally, the software running on processor performs these manipulations. To achieve higher computation performance in terms of execution time, these algorithms are implemented on reconfigurable hardware like FPGA. One can implement parallel architecture and pipelined architecture on FPGA to gain speed up. In this work, we provide a detailed description of implementing edge detection algorithm on SGI–RC100 platform. The algorithm is implemented using ANSI-C to manipulate the host program and Mitrion–C language. Mitrion–C offers efficient way to write code for parallel and pipelined architecture to preform edge detection. Then, the algorithm is tested on Intel Intanium 2 based architecture and compared its execution time with RC 100 platform based algorithm to check the speed up gain by FPGA based algorithm. The experimental results showed that the speed of the reconfigurable hardware FPGA based algorithm outperformed the software-based approach by more than 50 times.

Abstract:Fire is a great threat to human life and social security .The traditional fire detection method doesn't work well. In recent years, with the development of computer and the digital image processing technology video fire detection system will become a strong trend. This paper designs a video fire detection system on FPGA, using the edge detection algorithm of area absolute deviation, RGB judgment rule and absolute deviation algorithm of suspected fire area average gray value. We realize the fire detection algorithm on FPGA, which satisfies the requirement of real-time performance and make the detection more accurate. We use C code for fast Fourier transform in Nios II IDE, making the design more flexible.

Abstract:For any image identification based applications, edge detection is the primary step. The intention of the edge detection in image processing is to minimize the information that is not required in the analysis of identification of an image. In the process of reduction of insignificant data in the image, it may lead to some loss in information which in turn raise some problems like missing of boundaries with low contrast, false edge detection and some other noise affected problems. In order to reduce the effects due to noise, a modified version of popular edge detection algorithm “Canny edge detection algorithm” is proposed. Artix 7 FPGA board set up is used to implement, by using Xilinx platform the image that is obtained as output is displayed on monitor which is connected with FPGA board using connector port DVI. MATLAB Simulink is used for algorithm simulation and then it is executed on FPGA board using Xilinx platform. The results provide good motivation to use in different edge detection applications.
