Abstract:The alternative or classical pathways for complement system component C3 may be triggered by microorganisms and antigen-antibody complexes. In particular, an activated fragment of C3, C3b, covalently attaches to microorganisms or antigen-antibody complexes, which in turn bind to the C3b receptor, also known as complement receptor 1. The genes encoding the proteins that constitute the C3-activating enzymes have been cloned and mapped to a "complement activation" locus in the major histocompatibility complex, and we demonstrate in this study such a locus on the long arm of chromosome 1 at band 1q32.
FPGA Implementation of Feature Detection Algorithm Based on High Level Synthesis

Abstract:Aiming at the problems that the image processing system in the field of machine vision has high real-time requirement,and the traditional FPGA design needs long development cycle,but high level synthesis (HLS) provides a new way to accelerate the machine vision algorithm.Based on ZC706 development Platform and SDSoC development environment of Xilinx,this paper uses some optimization methods such as pipeline,loop unrolling,parallelism,line buffer and window buffer co-processing to realize hardware acceleration of the Sobel edge detection and Harris corner detection algorithm,which are widely used in the machine vision field.The experimental results show that the speed-up ratios of FPGA implementation based on HLS method for Sobel and Harris can reach 7.37 and 19.41,respectively,compared with software implementation in ARM platform.It can meet the requirements of real-time performance in the field of machine vision.

Abstract:A solution of stereo matching and hardware architecture based on field programmable gate array(FPGA) was presented to meet the requirement of real-time stereo vision in the unmanned vehicle navigation.A non-parametric algorithm CENSUS was used for stereo matching,overcoming the drawback of traditional methods under the situation of illumination unbalance between stereo cameras.This algorithm requires only simple operations and is suitable for FPGA implementation.Proper pipelines were elaborately designed to improve the capability of the parallel data processing and large data flow.This solution was tested by the synthesized and real data on a stereo vision system.The matching process could be accomplished in 15 ms.The results show that the proposed implementation is fast and robust.

Abstract:Horizon edge localization accuracy and speed are key factors in the performance of horizon sensors. This paper proposes a high-performance sub-pixel edge localization algorithm base on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for horizon sensors. The algorithm is carefully designed and simplified according to the computational capabilities and limitations of FPGAs. By making full use of the parallel computing capability of FPGA and carrying out multi-stage pipeline design, the algorithm can complete image acquisition, rough edge localization, sub-pixel edge localization, and projections from pixel points to unit vectors at the same time, which greatly reduces the delay caused by image processing. The experimental results show that FPGA-based image processing shows a significant superiority in terms of speed compared to traditional embedded processors.

Abstract:Recently, with the development of semiconductors and VLSI (Very Large Scale Integrated Circuit), the technology required for autonomous driving is rapidly developing. One of the technologies that cannot be left out is the lane detection function. Lane recognition requires a lot of data from the camera sensor. As a result, the data size increases, making it difficult to process on a lightweight embedded board. This paper proposes a sliding-based parallel segment image processing method to solve this problem. Most boards in autonomous vehicles are lightweight, so the technique has been designed to reduce computation and power consumption. After fetching the image’s pixel data, grayscale conversion, Gaussian smoothing, Sobel operator, non-maximum suppression, and hysteresis are performed in parallel. Lanes were detected by performing a Hough transform operation on an image for which edge detection was completed in parallel. Due to the nature of parallel processing, it is more effective when image input is continuous and numerous than single image processing. This algorithm is written in C language and VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) for two parts in the board, DE1-SoC, FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) and HPS (Hard Processor System. Due to the use of the C language and VHDL, parallel programming uses 3.1 times less time, twice as much memory and slightly more power than sequential programming. For hardware languages such as Verilog, the computation algorithms have been converted to a fixed point. When comparing HPS and FPGA, the FPGA consumed significantly fewer resources, with 18 times shorter run time, 50 times fewer clock cycles, 3 times less power, and 183 times less energy. This provides a substantial benefit.

Abstract:Depth estimation is a common task in stereo vision system and usually requires a high computational effort. High resolution images offer more details compared to low resolution images and high resolution depth maps are necessary to provide a good image quality on autostereoscopic displays which deliver stereo content without the need for 3D glasses. In this paper, a FPGA architecture for depth estimation is proposed, that is capable of processing full HD content with processing speed of 125fps and a disparity search range of 240 pixels. The resulting architecture is efficient in terms of power consumption and overall performance improvement.

Abstract:This paper presents a FPGA-based method for on-board detection and matching of the feature points. With the proposed method, a parallel processing model and a pipeline structure are presented to ensure a high frame rate at processing speed, but with a low power consumption. To save the FPGA resources and increase the processing speed, a model which combines the modified SURF detector and a BRIEF descriptor, is presented as well. Three pairs of images with different land coverages are used to evaluate the performance of FPGA-based implementation. The experiment results demonstrate that (1) when the image pairs with artificial features (such as buildings and roads), the performance of FPGA-based implementation is better than those image pairs with natural features (such as woods); (2) the proposed FPGA-based method is capable of ensuring the processing speed at a high frame rate, such as the speed of can achieve 304 fps under a 100 MHz clock frequency. The speedup of the proposed implementation is about 27 times higher than that when using the PC-based implementation.

Abstract:SURF (Speeded up robust features) detection is used extensively in object detection, tracking and matching. However, due to its high complexity, it is usually a challenge to perform such detection in real time on a general-purpose processor. This paper proposes a parallel computing algorithm for the fast computation of SURF, which is specially designed for FPGAs. By efficiently exploiting the advantages of the architecture of an FPGA, and by appropriately handling the inherent parallelism of the SURF computation, the proposed algorithm is able to significantly reduce the computation time. Our experimental results show that, for an image with a resolution of 640x480, the processing time for computing using SURF is only 0.047 seconds on an FPGA (XC6SLX150T, 66.7 MHz), which is 13 times faster than when performed on a typical i3-3240 CPU (with a 3.4 GHz main frequency) and 249 times faster than when performed on a traditional ARM system (CortexTM-A8, 1 GHz).

Abstract:Abstract As the basic content of digital image processing, edge detection is increasingly applied in machine vision, face recognition, target tracking and other fields. In particular, edge detection based on Sobel operator is generally applied in industrial practices. However, most current edge detections based on PC-side serial processing are extremely arduous to satisfy real-time processing. This paper proposes FPGA implementation of eight-direction Sobel edge detection algorithm based on adaptive threshold. Specifically, an eight-direction Sobel edge detection algorithm based on adaptive threshold is presented. Subsequently, the specific process of implementing the algorithm on FPGA using the design philosophy of parallel pipeline is described. Finally, a comparison of the performance between traditional Sobel and improved algorithm reveals that the improved algorithm offers distinct advantages in accuracy and detection effectiveness, and the parallel implementation of FPGA hardware can obviously enhance the detection speed and fulfil the real-time requirement.

Abstract:Detection of Human is a vital and difficult task in computer vision applications like a police investigation, vehicle tracking, and human following. Human detection in video stream is very important in public security management. In such security related cases detecting an object in the video, sequences are very important to understand the behavior of moving objects which normally used in the background subtraction technique. The input data is preprocessed using a modified median filter and Haar transform. The region of interest is extracted using a background subtraction algorithm with remaining spikes removed using threshold technique. The proposed architecture is coded using standard VHDL language and performance is checked in the Spartan-6 FPGA board. The comparison result shows that the proposed architecture is better than the existing method in both hardware and image quality.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel implementation for real-time depth estimation which can support full HD resolution for 3D video stream. We propose a package of solution to address the major difficulties in depth estimation, such as expensive computation, depth accuracy, real-time implementation and high definition progressing. Different from the typical single stereo vision methods, we take fusion strategy which can reduce errors caused by individual measure. The FPGA-based design is selected for real-time implementation which can achieve the maximum processing speed of 125fps, with maximum disparity search range of 240 pixels, full HD (1920 x 1080p) resolution image. Multi-resolution method which includes interpolation method and synthesizers are used for improve the efficiency and stability. The implementation can be included in video system for live 3DTV application and can be used as an independent hardware module in low-power application.

Abstract:The Canny edge detector is one of the most widely used edge detection algorithms due to its superior performance. Unfortunately, not only is it computationally more intensive as compared with other edge detection algorithms, but it also has a higher latency because it is based on frame-level statistics. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to implement the Canny algorithm at the block level without any loss in edge detection performance compared with the original frame-level Canny algorithm. Directly applying the original Canny algorithm at the block-level leads to excessive edges in smooth regions and to loss of significant edges in high-detailed regions since the original Canny computes the high and low thresholds based on the frame-level statistics. To solve this problem, we present a distributed Canny edge detection algorithm that adaptively computes the edge detection thresholds based on the block type and the local distribution of the gradients in the image block. In addition, the new algorithm uses a nonuniform gradient magnitude histogram to compute block-based hysteresis thresholds. The resulting block-based algorithm has a significantly reduced latency and can be easily integrated with other block-based image codecs. It is capable of supporting fast edge detection of images and videos with high resolutions, including full-HD since the latency is now a function of the block size instead of the frame size. In addition, quantitative conformance evaluations and subjective tests show that the edge detection performance of the proposed algorithm is better than the original frame-based algorithm, especially when noise is present in the images. Finally, this algorithm is implemented using a 32 computing engine architecture and is synthesized on the Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA. The synthesized architecture takes only 0.721 ms (including the SRAM READ/WRITE time and the computation time) to detect edges of 512 × 512 images in the USC SIPI database when clocked at 100 MHz and is faster than existing FPGA and GPU implementations.
Motion Object Tracking System Based on FPGA

Abstract:The technology of moving object detection and tracking has been widely used in consumer electronics, industrial detection, security monitoring and intelligent transportation. This paper uses FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) as the platform, because its unique parallel processing mechanism and powerful computing ability can improve the processing speed and performance of the system. At the same time, a design and implementation of SOPC (system on programmable chip) system based on NIOSII is proposed. The system bus clock reaches 266.67MHz. Combined with simple and effective detection and tracking algorithm, the processing speed of motion tracking is greatly improved by using floating-point hardware acceleration. The system can process 320 * 240 true color images at a speed of 20 frames per second. The tracking accuracy is over 93%. The results show that the system has achieved the expected function, has good real-time performance and tracking accuracy, and has good portability, and has a wide application prospect.

Abstract:Image detail enhancement is critical to the performance of short-wave infrared (SWIR) imaging systems. Recently, the requirement for real-time processing of high-definition (HD) SWIR video has shown rapid growth. Nevertheless, the research on field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of HD SWIR streaming video processing architecture is relatively few. This work proposes a real-time FPGA architecture of SWIR video enhancement by combining the difference of Gaussian filter and plateau equalization. To accelerate the algorithm and reduce memory bandwidth, two efficient key architectures, namely edge information extraction and equalization and remapping architecture, are proposed to sharpen edges and improve dynamic range. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed architecture achieved a real-time processing of 1280 × 1024@60Hz with 2.7K lookup tables, 2.5K Slice Reg, and about 350 kb of block RAM consumption, and their utilization reached 12.5%, 19.2%, and 12.5% for the XC7A200T FPGA board, respectively. Moreover, the proposed architecture is fully pipelined and synchronized to the pixel clock of output video, meaning that it can be seamlessly integrated into diverse real-time video processing systems.

Abstract:New artificial intelligence scenarios, such as high-precision online industrial detection, unmanned driving, etc., are constantly emerging and have resulted in an increasing demand for real-time image processing with high frame rates and low power consumption. Histogram equalization (HE) is a very effective and commonly used image preprocessing algorithm designed to improve the quality of image processing results. However, most existing HE acceleration methods, whether run on general-purpose CPUs or dedicated embedded systems, require further improvement in their frame rate to meet the needs of more complex scenarios. In this paper, we propose an HE acceleration method for FPGAs based on a two-dimensional configurable pipeline architecture. We first optimize the parallelizability of HE with a fully configurable two-dimensional pipeline architecture according to the principle of adapting the algorithm to the hardware, where one dimension can compute the cumulative histogram in parallel and the other dimension can process multiple inputs simultaneously. This optimization also helps in the construction of a simple architecture that achieves a higher frequency when implementing HE on FPGAs, which consist of configurable input units, calculation units, and output units. Finally, we optimize the pipeline and critical path of the calculation units. In the experiments, we deploy the optimized HE on a VCU118 test board and achieve a maximum frequency of 891 MHz (which is up to 22.6 times more acceleration than CPU implementations), as well as a frame rate of 1899 frames per second for 1080p images.

FPGA-based Acceleration System for Visual Tracking

Abstract:Visual tracking is one of the most important application areas of computer vision. At present, most algorithms are mainly implemented on PCs, and it is difficult to ensure real-time performance when applied in the real scenario. In order to improve the tracking speed and reduce the overall power consumption of visual tracking, this paper proposes a real-time visual tracking algorithm based on DSST(Discriminative Scale Space Tracking) approach. We implement a hardware system on Xilinx XC7K325T FPGA platform based on our proposed visual tracking algorithm. Our hardware system can run at more than 153 frames per second. In order to reduce the resource occupation, our system adopts the batch processing method in the feature extraction module. In the filter processing module, the FFT IP core is time-division multiplexed. Therefore, our hardware system utilizes LUTs and storage blocks of 33% and 40%, respectively. Test results show that the proposed visual tracking hardware system has excellent performance.

A High Performance Parallel Computing Architecture For Robust Image Features

Abstract:A design of parallel architecture for image feature detection and description is proposed in this article. The major component of this architecture is a 2D cellular network composed of simple reprogrammable processors, enabling the Hessian Blob Detector and Haar Response Calculation, which are the most computing-intensive stage of the Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) algorithm. Combining this 2D cellular network and dedicated hardware for SURF descriptors, this architecture achieves real-time image feature detection with minimal software in the host processor. A prototype FPGA implementation of the proposed architecture achieves 1318.9 GOPS general pixel processing @ 100 MHz clock and achieves up to 118 fps in VGA (640 �� 480) image feature detection. The proposed architecture is stand-alone and scalable so it is easy to be migrated into VLSI implementation. ? 2013 Taylor & Francis.

Abstract:Due to its advantages of low latency, low power consumption, and high flexibility, FPGA-based acceleration technology has been more and more widely studied and applied in the field of computer vision in recent years. An FPGA-based feature extraction and tracking accelerator for real-time visual odometry (VO) and visual simultaneous localization and mapping (V-SLAM) is proposed, which can realize the complete acceleration processing capability of the image front-end. For the first time, we implement a hardware solution that combines features from accelerated segment test (FAST) feature points with Gunnar Farneback (GF) dense optical flow to achieve better feature tracking performance and provide more flexible technical route selection. In order to solve the scale invariance and rotation invariance lacking problems of FAST features, an efficient pyramid module with a five-layer thumbnail structure was designed and implemented. The accelerator was implemented on a modern Xilinx Zynq FPGA. The evaluation results showed that the accelerator could achieve stable tracking of features of violently shaking images and were consistent with the results from MATLAB code running on PCs. Compared to PC CPUs, which require seconds of processing time, the processing latency was greatly reduced to the order of milliseconds, making GF dense optical flow an efficient and practical technical solution on the edge side.
