Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationships between juvenile offenders and middle school students' self identity and self-esteem,social adaptive ability.Methods A total of 64 juvenile offenders and 94 high school students were administered with the revised Ego Identity Process Questionnaire(EIPQ),Self Esteem Scale(SES)and Social Adaptive Ability Diagnosis Questionnaire(SAADQ).Results ①Ego-identity status of juvenile offenders and high school students from high to low were identity diffusion,identity achieved,identity foreclosed,and identity moratorium.There was significant difference among the juvenile offenders' ego-identity status(χ2 =11.375,P<0.05),nearly half of them were identified as identity diffusion(42.20%);② High school students' exploration and commitment of ego-identity correlated with their self-esteem and social adaptive ability.The juvenile offenders' interpersonal exploration,commitment and exploration dimension correlated with their self-esteem,while their interpersonal exploration correlated with their social adaptive ability;③ 2×4 MANOVA revealed main effects of subject types and ego-identity status on self-esteem and social adaptive ability subject types(Fself-esteem=19.54,P<0.001),partialη2=0.115 and(Fsocial adaptive ability=13.85,P<0.001),partial η2=0.085;ego-identity statuses(Fself-esteem=4.48,P<0.01),partialη2=0.082,and Fsocial adaptive ability=4.59,P<0.01,partial η2=0.084).Middle school students' self-esteem and social adaptive ability was significantly higher than the juvenile offenders'(t=4.28,P<0.001,and t=3.80,P<0.001).Self-esteem and social adaptive ability of identity achieved adolescents in both groups were significantly higher than those of the identity diffused and foreclosed(Ps<0.05),self-esteem and social adaptive ability of identity moratorium were significantly higher than those of the identity diffused(Ps<0.05).Conclusion Juvenile offenders' self-esteem and social adaptive ability are significantly lower than high school students'.Both of juvenile offenders and middle school students' ego identity influence their self-esteem and social adaptive ability.
