Abstract:Background Accumulating evidence show that the prevalence and development of hypertension are closely related with socio-education level. Objective To investigate the prevalence of hypertension and serum lipids in a cohort of high socio-educated in the people in the university's teachers in Xinyang. Methods A total of 1028 teachers of Xinyang Normal University were enrolled.Blood pressure, body height, body weight, and serum levels of lipids were measured. The data were compared with those in 862 age matched inhabitants in the same city. Results Mean systolic blood pressure(125.2±18.4 vs 121.8±15.9 mm Hg) and mean pulse pressure(48.5±13.9 mm Hg vs 44.8±11.2 mm Hg) of surveyed cohort of people were significantly higher than that ordinary inhibitants (P<0.01).The prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension 10.2%vs 6.4%) was also significantly higher(P<0.01).Serum total cholesterol,triglycerides,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia (24.5%vs 28.9%) were significantly lower(P<0.05),while serum concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were higher(P<0.01).The prevalence of hypertension in university's teachers was positively associated with triglycerides(r=0.423,P<0.05),whereas the prevalence of hypertension in ordinary people was positively correlated with total cholesterol(r=0.618,P<0.01).Conclusion The data show that there is a significant difference in blood pressure and serum lipids profile between university's teachers and ordinary inhibitants.
