Abstract:Two-dimensional grapheme offers interesting electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties that are currently being explored for advanced electronics, membranes, and composites. Here we synthesize and explore the biological applications of grapheme oxide. The functionalization chemistry was developed to impart solubility and compatibility of grapheme oxide in biological environments. We found that the global myoglobin (Mb) – grapheme oxide hybrids (Mb-GO) could be successfully prepared by chemical deposition via carboxylic acid modified graphite oxide (GO-COOH) as the intermediate under mild conditions. The functioned grapheme oxide was characterized by many techniques including UV-Vis, FT-IR, Raman, SEM, and TEM. The results indicated that the hydroxyl groups and epoxide groups could be converted to carboxylic acid moieties under strongly basic conditions, and the carboxylic acid modified graphite oxide had increased water solubility and more carboxylic acid groups available for subsequent enzyme immobilization by covalent binding. The average amount of carboxylic acid groups in GO-COOH were determined to be 1.243 mmol in 100 mg GO-COOH by acid-base titration. And the average mole percentage of the carboxylic acid groups on GO-COOH was about 14.9%. The funcitionalization of GO with carboxylic acid groups provided basis for constructing various function materials, including biosensors, enzyme reactors, cellular imaging, and drug delivery.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) can be reduced and decorated by bovine serum albumin (BSA) at suitable pH and temperature. The resulting bioconjugates between BSA and GO or reduced GO are ideal templates for highly efficient assembly of a variety of nanoparticles with dramatically different compositions, sizes, shapes, and properties. This methodology offers a great chance for investigations on the structure-performance relationship of hybrid nanomaterials toward combinatorial material design aiming at special functions and applications.

Abstract:In this work, hydrophilic and organophilic chemically modified graphene oxide (CMGO) sheets were prepared through a two-step diimide-activated amidation. The hydrophilic and organophilic products were characterized by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The resulted dispersions are homogeneous and exhibit long-term stability, which will facilitate the combination of CMGO sheets with polymers to yield homogeneous composites.

Abstract:Biochemical and biomedical applications of graphene oxide (GO) critically rely on the interaction of biomolecules with it. It has been previously reported that the biological activity of the GOenzyme conjugate decreases due to electrostatic interaction between the enzymes and GO. Herein, the immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and oxalate oxidase (OxOx) on chemically reduced graphene oxide (CRGO) are reported. The enzymes can be adsorbed onto CRGO directly with a tenfold higher enzyme loading than that on GO, and maximum enzyme loadings reach 1.3 and 12 mg mg-1 for HRP and OxOx, respectively. Significantly, the more CRGO is reduced, the higher the enzyme loading. The CRGOHRP conjugates also exhibit higher enzyme activity and stability than GOHRP. Excellent properties of the CRGOenzyme conjugates are attributed to hydrophobic interaction between the enzymes and the CRGO. The hydrophobic interaction mode of the CRGOenzyme conjugates can be applied to other hydrophobic proteins, and thus could dramatically improve the performance of immobilized proteins. The results indicate that CRGO is a potential substrate for efficient enzyme immobilization, and is an ideal candidate as a macromolecule carrier and biosensor.

Abstract:Stereospecific molecular recognition with simple and easily available proteins is of significant importance in life science and biomaterial science. Herein, we report on a chiral sensing platform, graphene quantum dots (GQDs)-functionalized bovine serum albumin (BSA), for chiral recognition of tryptophan (Trp) isomers. Amidation reaction between BSA and GQDs was directly responsible for the introduction of GQDs to BSA, resulting in significant changes in the spatial configuration of BSA and the exposure of more chiral sites at the protein surface. The BSA-GQDs-based chiral sensor exhibited good biomolecular homochirality in the recognition of Trp isomers, and the higher affinity of BSA-GQDs toward l-Trp than its isomer, d-Trp, was also revealed by density functional theory (DFT) considering the possible hydrogen bonds between the Trp isomers and the solvent-accessible residues of BSA.

Abstract:In this study, we report a scalable, fast, and easy method for preparation of organophilic chemically functionalized graphene (OCFG) sheets. The basic strategy involved the preparation of graphite oxide (GO) and the complete exfoliation of GO into graphene oxide sheets, followed by reacting with 1-bromobutane to obtain OCFG sheets. Thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated the functionalization of GO. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to demonstrate the structure of produced graphene oxide and OCFG sheets. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy confirmed that OCFG sheets disperse well in organic solvents and the solutions obey Beer's law. The resulting organic dispersions are homogeneous, exhibit long-term stability, and are made up of graphene sheets a few hundred nanometers large. The ability to prepare graphene dispersions in organic media facilitates their combination with polymers to yield homogeneous composites.

Abstract:A facile “click chemistry” approach to functionalize 2D macromolecules of graphene oxide nanosheets with poly (ethylene glycol) of different molecular weights, polystyrene, palmitic acid and various amino acids was presented. FTIR, TGA, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, XRD, TEM, AFM and SEM were utilized to characterize the products. High degree of functionalization was achieved on the flat surfaces of graphene oxide, affording polymer-grafted 2D brushes and amino acids-immobilized nanosheets, which show improved solubility in organic solvents. The click chemistry strategy reported herein provides a facile and general method for functionalization of graphene oxide with macromolecules and desired biomolecules.

Abstract:Expandable graphite oxide (EGO) was functionalized with different amine groups after sequential steps as thermal expansion, oxidation, acylation, and amidation. Three types of amino-functionalized graphenes (a-Gphs) were prepared by exfoliating amino functionalized EGOs(a-EGO) through controlled ultrasonication. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elementary analysis, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis separately confirmed the chemical structure of a-EGO. The effect of ultrasonic power on the particle sizes of exfoliated a-EGOs was estimated by dynamic light scattering. Single layered graphene (0.43 nm) was achieved after ultrasonicating at 500 W for 20 min, which was affirmed by the results of atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Ultra violet-visible spectroscopy also indicates the good dispersion properties of a-Gphs in these solvents. Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) was functionalized and reduced simultaneously by a new reductant, 4-hydrazinobenzenesulfonic acid (HBS), with a one-step and environmentally friendly process. The hydrophilic sulfonic acid group in HBS was grafted onto the surface of GO through a covalent bond. The successful preparation of HBS reduced GO (HBS-rGO) was testified by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The interlayer space of HBS-rGO was increased to 1.478 nm from 0.751 nm for GO, resulting in a subdued Van der Waals' force between layers and less possibility to form aggregations. The aqueous dispersibility of graphene was improved to 13.49 mg/mL from 0.58 mg/mL after the functionalization. The viscosity of the epoxy resin based HBS-rGO composite could be regulated by an adjustment of the content of HBS-rGO. This study provides a new and applicable approach for the preparation of hydrophilic functionalized graphene, and makes it possible for the application of graphene in some functional polymer nanocomposites, such as specialty water-based coatings.
Preparation and Characterisation of Covalent Polymer Functionalized Graphene Oxide

Abstract:A covalently bonded polyethylene grafted graphene oxide hybrid material was fabricated successfully. Gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was firstly coated onto the graphene oxide sheets, and then maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MA-g-PE) was grafted onto the APTES coated graphene oxide sheets, which were confirmed by means of Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. Functionalization resulted in 96 wt% polymer grafting efficiency, and a 10 °C increase in the crystallisation temperature, compared with that of the pure MA-g-PE. An encapsulating structure of the functionalised graphene oxide sheets was observed by means of TEM. For the potential application of the functionalised graphene oxide, PE/functionalised graphene oxide nanocomposites as an example was assessed in this paper. Initial results showed that Young's modulus, yielding strength and tensile strength of PE can be improved by incorporation of the PE-graft-graphene oxide at very low loadings. This protocol could broad the potential application of graphene in the development of non-polar polymer/graphene nanocomposites.

Abstract:Guanidine‐functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposites (GO‐GN NCs) are synthesized using Hummer's method and characterized by FTIR, PXRD, TGA, Raman, FESEM, TEM, XPS, and BET. Outstanding catalytic efficiency, stability, and durability are demonstrated by the GO‐GN NCs in Knoevenagel and Aldol condensations conducted in a water‐ethanol mixture under ambient conditions. Additionally, easy workup, wide substrate tolerance, high yields, recyclability, and environmental advantages are provided by these nanocomposites, establishing them as a versatile and sustainable catalyst option. Herein, we synthesized guanidine functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposites referred to GO‐GN NCs using hummer's method. GO‐GN NCs was characterized using Fourier‐Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Powder X‐ray Diffraction, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Raman Spectroscopy, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller (BET) surface area analysis to confirm successful formation of GO‐GN NCs catalysts. The catalytic performance for GO‐GN NCs was evaluated for Knoevenagel and Aldol condensation reaction in aqueous medium at ambient condition and result shows that it could be used as a highly efficient, stable, and durable catalyst. In addition, it has another feature such as easy workup procedure, large substrate tolerance, high reaction yield, good recyclability, and environmental friendliness.

Abstract:Covalently tethered CO2 adsorbents are synthesized by acid catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of aziridine on the basal planes of three-dimensional hydroxylated graphene (HG). The resulting materials possess high surface areas, strong covalent bonds between polyethyleneimine (PEI) and graphene, and high thermal conductivity. The HG-PEI nanocomposites exhibit high amine loading (more than 10.03 mmol N g(-1)), high adsorption capacity (up to 4.13 mmol CO2 g(-1) in simulated ambient air under 1 atm of dry CO2) as well as good stability both at low (100 degrees C) and high desorption temperatures (135 degrees C), which allows the overall CO2 capture process to be promising and sustainable.

Abstract:Covalent hybrids of graphene and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) hold immense potential in various technologies, particularly catalysis and energy applications, due to the advantageous combination of conductivity and porosity. The formation of an amide bond between carboxylate-functionalized graphene acid (GA) and amine-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 MOF (Zr6O4(OH)4(NH2-bdc)6, with NH2-bdc2– = 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and UiO = Universitetet i Oslo) is a highly efficient strategy for creating such covalent hybrids. Previous experimental studies have demonstrated exceptional properties of these conductive networks, including significant surface area and functionalized hierarchical pores, showing promise as a chemiresistive CO2 sensor and electrode materials for asymmetric supercapacitors. However, the molecular-level origin of the covalent linkages between pristine MOF and GA layers remains unclear. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of amide bond formation between GA and UiO-66-NH2. The theoretical calculations emphasize the crucial role of zirconium within UiO-66, which acts as a catalyst in the reaction cycle. Both commonly observed hexa-coordinated and less common hepta-coordinated zirconium complexes are considered as intermediates. By gaining detailed insights into the binding interactions between graphene derivatives and MOFs, strategies for tailored syntheses of such nanocomposite materials can be developed.

Covalent Functionalization of Graphene with Organosilane and Its Use As a Reinforcement in Epoxy Composites

Abstract:Functionalized graphene nanosheets (f-GNSs) produced by chemically grafting organosilane were synthesized by a simple covalent functionalization with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane. The f-GNSs showed a larger thickness, but smaller width and than the un-treated graphene. The covalent functionalization of graphene with silane was favorable for their homogeneous dispersion in the polymer matrix even at a high nanofiller loading (1wt.%). The initial thermal degradation temperature of epoxy composite was increased from 314°C to 334°C, at a f-GNS content of 1wt.%. Meanwhile, the addition of 1wt.% f-GNSs increased the tensile strength and elongation to failure of epoxy resins by 45% and 133%, respectively. This is believed to be attributed to the strong interfacial interactions between f-GNSs and the epoxy resins by covalent functionalization. The experimentally determined Young’s modulus corresponded well with theoretical simulation under the hypothesis that the graphene sheets randomly dispersed in the polymer matrix.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) has drawn more attention as reinforcement in polymer by reason of excellent mechanical properties. While its aggregation and weak interfacial bonding to polymer matrix will deteriorate positive effect. In this study, GO was modified with 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to facilitate its dispersion and improve interfacial bonding with polyglycolide (PGA) in scaffold fabricated by means of selective laser sintering (SLS). To be specific, -OH groups of hydrolyzed APTES formed covalent bonding with -OH groups of GO, which introduced numerous long alkyl chains and -NH2 groups on GO. The long alkyl chains could generate steric hindrance effect against GO aggregation, while the -NH2 groups could interact with the -COOH groups of PGA and thus enhance interfacial bonding between GO and PGA. The results suggested that introduction of APTES led to a better exfoliation of GO with a thickness of about 1.52 nm, which was beneficial to uniform dispersion of GO in matrix. GO nanosheets adhered to polymer matrix with much wire-drawing on the fracture surface, and the scaffold possessed improved thermal stability, indicating the good interfacial bonding. Tensile and compressive strength of scaffold loading 0.75 wt% APTES modified GO improved by 112% and 54%, respectively, compared with scaffold without modification. In addition, cell experiments in vitro manifested that scaffold possessed benign cytocompatibility for cell adhesion and growth, providing important benefits related to bone regeneration.

Abstract:In this work, we report the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) nanohybrids with starch, fructose, and micro-cellulose molecules by sonication in an aqueous medium at 90 °C and a short reaction time (30 min). The final product was washed with solvents to extract the nanohybrids and separate them from the organic molecules not grafted onto the GO surface. Nanohybrids were chemically characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy and analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These results indicate that the ultrasound energy promoted a chemical reaction between GO and the organic molecules in a short time (30 min). The chemical characterization of these nanohybrids confirms their covalent bond, obtaining a grafting percentage above 40% the weight in these nanohybrids. This hybridization creates nanometric and millimetric nanohybrid particles. In addition, the grafted organic molecules can be crystallized on GO films. Interference in the ultrasound waves of starch hybrids is due to the increase in viscosity, leading to a partial hybridization of GO with starch.

Abstract:In this study, we used multilayer graphene oxide (GO) obtained by anodic oxidation of graphite powder in 83% sulfuric acid. The modification of GO was carried out by its interaction with hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) according to the mechanism of nucleophilic substitution between the amino group of HMDA (HMDA) and the epoxy groups of GO, accompanied by partial reduction of multilayer GO and an increase in the deformation of the carbon layers. The structure and properties of modified HMDA-GO were characterized using research methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The conducted studies show the effectiveness of using HMDA-OG for modifying epoxy composites. Functionalizing treatment of GO particles helps reduce the free surface energy at the polymer–nanofiller interface and increase adhesion, which leads to the improvement in physical and mechanical characteristics of the composite material. The results demonstrate an increase in the strength and elastic modulus in bending by 48% and 102%, respectively, an increase in the impact strength by 122%, and an increase in the strength and elastic modulus in tension by 82% and 47%, respectively, as compared to the pristine epoxy composite which did not contain GO-HMDA. It has been found that the addition of GO-HMDA into the epoxy composition initiates the polymerization process due to the participation of reactive amino groups in the polymerization reaction, and also provides an increase in the thermal stability of epoxy nanocomposites.

Abstract:Amino- and epoxy-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) were synthesized separately through a wash-and-rebuild process utilizing two differently terminated silane coupling agents. The modified GO sheets were then incorporated into an epoxy resin to prepare nanocomposites. The addition of 0.2 wt% amino-functionalized GO (APTS-GO) yielded a 32% increase in Young's modulus (3.3 GPa) and 16% increase in tensile strength (81.2 MPa). Less reinforcement was observed with the epoxy-functionalized GO (GPTS-GO) but there was a more significant increase in ductility for GPTS-GO/epoxy, with the fracture toughness (critical intensity factor, KIC) and fracture energy (critical strain energy release rate, GIC) nearly doubling at 0.2 wt% loading (1.46 MPam1/2 and 0.62 kJ/m2 for KIC and GIC, respectively). Raman spectroscopy measurements revealed that the GPTS-GO was dispersed more uniformly than the APTS-GO in the epoxy matrix, and better interfacial stress transfer was found for the APTS-GO. Thus the wash-and-rebuild process affords a novel strategy for controlling the functionality of graphene in the quest to develop high-performance graphene-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:This study reports a Graphene Oxide Mediated SERS (GOMS) Substrate supporting silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which is characterized with the relatively clean surface of nanoparticles and formation of stable suspension in the detection. Moreover the tight anchoring of silver nanoparticles on the platform by a multiple oxygen-containing groups on GO carbon grid favors for the generation of large number of “hot” spots. We demonstrate that anchoring of the 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) analyte at these system leads to a pronounced intensification of its Raman emission using described SERS assay. Most impressively, acting as a new type of SERS substrate, the GOMS Substrate can disperse well in water during the detection process, which makes the Raman signals very uniform. This work not only shows that target molecule such as 4-Mpy has a strong interaction with the nanoparticle surface can be detected quickly and accurately with high sensitivity and stability, but also show SERS activity successfully for Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), which interaction with nanoparticle surface is weak, in about physiological saline of Label-free detection. The results reported herein may lead to many applications in SERS techniques.
