Abstract:Two-dimensional polyaniline (PANI) nanosheets have been prepared inductively by electropolymerization of aniline monomer in an aqueous electrolyte containing sulfonated PANI-functionalized graphenes (SPANI-Gs). The SPANI-G aqueous solution is used directly as the electrolyte for electropolymerization of aniline. The formation of PANI nanosheets depends strongly on the aniline monomer concentration and the as-prepared nanosheets have a thickness of ca. 10 nm. Morphologic characterization reveals the resultant samples are stacked loosely on the surface of electrodes with a large surface area accessible to electrolyte. Electrochemical investigation has shown that the PANI nanosheets formed in the presence of SPANI-Gs had a large specific capacitance of 372 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.3 A g(-1), five times higher than that of a normal PANI film synthesized in the absence of SPANI-Gs, showing the great potential for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Functionalization and dispersion of graphene sheets are of crucial importance for their end applications. Chemical functionalization of graphene enables this material to be processed by solvent-assisted techniques, such as layer-by-layer assembly, spin-coating, and filtration. It also prevents the agglomeration of single layer graphene during reduction and maintains the inherent properties of graphene. Therefore, a detailed review on the advances of chemical functionalization of graphene is presented. Synthesis and characterization of graphene have also been reviewed in the current article. The functionalization of graphene can be performed by covalent and noncovalent modification techniques. In both cases, surface modification of graphene oxide followed by reduction has been carried out to obtain functionalized graphene. It has been found that both the covalent and noncovalent modification techniques are very effective in the preparation of processable graphene. However, the electrical conductivity of the functionalized graphene has been observed to decrease significantly compared to pure graphene. Moreover, the surface area of the functionalized graphene prepared by covalent and non-covalent techniques decreases significantly due to the destructive chemical oxidation of flake graphite followed by sonication, functionalization and chemical reduction. In order to overcome these problems, several studies have been reported on the preparation of functionalized graphene directly from graphite (one-step process). In all these cases, surface modification of graphene can prevent agglomeration and facilitates the formation of stable dispersions. Surface modified graphene can be used for the fabrication of polymer nanocomposites, super-capacitor devices, drug delivery system, solar cells, memory devices, transistor device, biosensor, etc.

Abstract:An effective approach for the large-scale fabrication of conducting polyaniline (PANI) using in situ anodic electrochemical polymerization on nickel foam which had been coated in aryl diazonium salt (ADS)-modified graphene (ADS-G). In the present work, ADS-G was used as a high surface-area support material for the electrochemical polymerization of PANI. The electrochemical performances of the ADS-G/PANI composites exhibited better suitability as supercapacitor electrode materials than those of the PANI. The ADS-G/PANI composites achieved a specific capacitance of 528 F g−1, which was higher than that of PANI (266 F g−1) due to excellent electrode–electrolyte interaction and the synergistic effect of electrical conductivity between ADS-G and PANI in the composites. These findings suggest that the ADS-G/PANI composites are a suitable composite for potential supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Electrodynamic systems for bioanalytical applications constantly suffer from biofouling due to electrical field-induced nonspecific bioadsorption on electrode surfaces. To minimize this issue, surface modification using anti-biofouling and conductive materials is necessary to not only protect the electrode surface from nonspecific bioadsorption but also maintain desired electrodynamic properties for electrode operation. In this study, we designed and prepared a conductive, zwitterionic, and self-doped sulfonated polyaniline (SPANI) coating on Au electrode surfaces for anti-biofouling applications. The zwitterionic coating was fabricated by electrochemical polymerization of aniline on the Au electrode surface functionalized with cysteamine (HS-CH2CH2-NH2) and then a post-polymerization treatment with fuming sulfuric acid. We found that the SPANI-coated electrodes exhibited an excellent anti-biofouling ability in dielectrophoresis (DEP) capturing-and-releasing processes, with a very low average residual mass rate of 1.44% for the SPANI-5s electrode, whereas electrodes modified with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) gave an average residual mass rate of 14.30%. Even under continuous operation for more than 1 h, the SPANI-5s electrode still showed stable anti-biofouling ability for an 11-cycle E. coli capturing-and-releasing DEP process, with the residual mass rate for all 11 cycles being kept at or below 2.18% to give an average residual mass rate of 1.62% with a standard deviation of 0.40%. This study demonstrates that electrodynamic systems with zwitterionic SPANI coated on open electrode surfaces can excellently function with decent conductance and anti-biofouling performance.

Abstract:The fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene have enriched the family of carbon allotropes over the last few decades. Synthetic carbon allotropes (SCAs) have attracted chemists, physicists, and materials scientists because of the sheer multitude of their aesthetically pleasing structures and, more so, because of their outstanding and often unprecedented properties. They consist of fully conjugated p-electron systems and are considered topologically confined objects in zero, one, or two dimensions. Among the SCAs, graphene shows the greatest potential for high-performance applications, in the field of nanoelectronics, for example. However, significant fundamental research is still required to develop graphene chemistry. Chemical functionalization of graphene will increase its dispersibility in solvents, improve its processing into new materials, and facilitate the combination of graphene's unprecedented properties with those of other compound classes. On the basis of our experience with fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, we have described a series of covalent and noncovalent approaches to generate graphene derivatives. Using water-soluble perylene surfactants, we could efficiently exfoliate graphite in water and prepare substantial amounts of single-layer-graphene (SLG) and few-layer-graphene (FLG). At the same time, this approach leads to noncovalent graphene derivatives because it establishes efficient π-π-stacking interactions between graphene and the aromatic perylene chromophors supported by hydrophobic interactions. To gain efficient access to covalently functionalized graphene we employed graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), where positively charged metal cations are located between the negatively charged graphene sheets. The balanced combination of intercalation combined with repulsion driven by Coulombic interactions facilitated efficient exfoliation and wet chemical functionalization of the electronically activated graphene sheets via trapping with reactive electrophilic addends. For example, the treatment of reduced graphite with aryl diazonium salts with the elimination of N(2) led to the formation of arylated graphene. We obtained alkylated graphene via related trapping reactions with alkyl iodides. These new developments have opened the door for combining the unprecedented properties of graphene with those of other compound classes. We expect that further studies of the principles of graphene reactivity, improved characterization methods, and better synthetic control over graphene derivatives will lead to a whole series of new materials with highly specific functionalities and enormous potential for attractive applications.

Abstract:Covalent functionalization of reduced graphene oxide aerogel (RGOA), which has undergone diazotization and amidation, was achieved by grafting polyaniline (PANI) onto the surface of RGOA. Diazotization and amidation could introduce amino groups, which were directly responsible for the chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline on the surface of RGOA. The resultant PANI-grafted RGOA (RGOA-PANI) could be used for high performance supercapacitors.
Nano-porous sulfur–polyaniline electrodes for lithium–sulfurbatteries

Abstract:Here we report a nano-porous sulfur–polyaniline (SPANI) electrode with high sulfur loading, excellent cycling and rate capability for Li–S batteries. The SPANI has a high degree of interconnected nano-porous structures conducive to large sulfur loading and fast mass transportation. In addition, a disulfide chain on PANI is also functioned as the electrochemical redox component. While the main positively charged backbone chain in SPANI provides electron conductivity and electrostatic attraction force to stabilize polysulfide anions during cycling. As a result, the SPANI electrode demonstrates a high reversible capacity of 750mAhg−1 with 89.7% of capacity retention over 200 cycles at 0.3C, and an excellent high-rate response up to 2C over 200 cycles with a good sulfur utilization. The covalently bonded sulfur on positively charged polymer substrate offers a new way to improve energy storage capabilities of Li–S batteries.

Abstract:In this study, poly(ionic liquid)s functionalized graphene nanosheets (GNSPIL) were produced directly from graphite by shear exfoliation with the assistance of poly(ionic liquid)s. The chemical structure, as well as thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of the obtained graphene sheets were characterized by TEM, SEM, AFM, FTIR, TGA, Raman spectroscopy, etc. In addition, a composite of graphene-coated sodium polyacrylate gel sphere (GNSPIL/PAA) was prepared by anion exchange reaction, and the properties of this composite were characterized through a series of techniques. This study showed that the obtained GNSPIL were well dispersed in water without agglomeration. Moreover, the solution-processability of GNSPIL and the easily realized ion exchangeability can greatly expand the application in the field of graphene composites and play an important role in the construction of carbon materials.

Abstract:As the most studied two-dimensional material, graphene is still attracting a lot of attention from both academia and industry due to its fantastic properties such as lightness, excellent mechanical strength, and high conductivity of heat and electricity. As an important branch of graphene materials, graphene nanoplatelets show numerous applications such as in coating, fillers of polymer composites, energy conversion and storage devices, sensing, etc. Chemical functionalization can introduce different functional groups to graphene nanoplatelets and can potentially endow them with different properties and functions to meet the increasing demand in the fields mentioned above. In this minireview, we present an overview of the research progress of functionalized graphene nanoplatelets bearing hydroxyl, amino, and carboxylic terminal groups, including both covalent and noncovalent approaches. These terminal groups allow subsequent functionalization reactions to attach additional moieties. Relevant characterization techniques, different applications, challenges, and future directions of functionalized graphene nanoplatelets are also critically summarized.

Abstract:Polypyrrole/sulfonated polyaniline (PPY/SPANI) composite films have been prepared by direct electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole in an aqueous solution of SPANI. Spectroscopic results demonstrated that the polyanion, SPANI, was incorporated into the PPY matrix as a dopant. The composite films exhibited a higher thermal stability than that of pure PPY. Scanning electron microscopic images revealed that the composite film had smooth and compact morphology. Furthermore, a simple ammonia sensing device based on the composite film showed high sensitivity and a low limit of detection.

Abstract:This work describes a new one‐step large‐scale electrochemical synthesis of graphene/polyaniline (PANI) composite films using graphite oxide (GO) and aniline as the starting materials. The size of the film could be controlled by the area of indium tin oxide (ITO). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and ultraviolet–visible absorption spectrum (UV–vis) results demonstrated that the graphene/PANI composite film was successfully synthesized. The obtained graphene/PANI composite film showed large specific area, high conductivity, good biocompatibility, and fast redox properties and had perfect layered and encapsulated structures. Electrochemical experiments indicated that the composite film had high performances and could be widely used in applied electrochemical fields. As a model, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was entrapped onto the film‐modiﬁed glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and used to construct a biosensor. The immobilized HRP showed a pair of well‐deﬁned redox peaks and high catalytic activity for the reduction of H2O2. Furthermore, the graphene/PANI composite film could be directly used as the supercapacitor electrode. The supercapacitor showed a high specific capacitance of 640 F g−1 with a retention life of 90% after 1000 charge/discharge cycles.
Water Dispersible Graphene Sheets Produced from Unassembled Graphene–Polyaniline Nanohybrids

Abstract:We present an efficient process for producing water dispersible graphene sheets from unassembled graphene–polyaniline nanohybrids. The result of atomic force microscopy reveals that over 80% of thus-prepared graphitic sheets are single layers with typical thickness of approximately 0.8 nm. The proportion of modifying molecules in the product is found to be as low as 3.0 wt.%, as determined by elemental analysis. Along with its fascinating water dispersibility and remarkably high electrical conductivity, such material is anticipated to be very promising for use in graphene-based nanoelectronics and high-performance composites.

Abstract:The multilayers of poly(amido amine) dendrimer (fourth generation amine-terminated, G4NH(2)) and conducting sulfonated polyaniline (SPANI) were successfully deposited onto solid substrates by alternatively dipping in SPANI and G4NH(2) solutions. Multilayer growth was monitored by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared-reflection absorption spectroscopy, which revealed an adsorption-desorption phenomenon, although it was sensitive to the concentration and pH of solutions. The average thickness of the SPANI/G4NH(2) bilayer obtained from X-ray reflectivity is much,smaller than the diameter of G4NH(2) with an ideal spherical structure, suggesting that the dendrimer molecules in multilayers are highly compressed along the surface normal. Electron density profiles indicate that the multilayers are highly interpenetrated, and the thickness and molecular arrangement in the multilayers depend on the pH of G4NH(2) solutions. Cyclic voltammograms of the multilayers in acidic and neutral electrolyte solutions show that the multilayers have good physical and electrochemical stability. The photoelectric conversion response shows cathodic or anodic photocurrent depending on the bias voltage (i.e., on the oxidation state of SPANI). At higher potentials, it shows characteristics of an n-type semiconductor, whereas it behaves like a p-type semiconductor at lower potentials.

Abstract:Graphene, a two-dimensional crystalline monolayer made of sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, holds a set of remarkable electronic and physical properties, such as ballistic transport with low resistivity, high chemical stability, and high mechanical strength. By taking advantage of these, in recent years our research group has performed a series of studies for modifying the surfaces of graphene and tuning its properties. These studies can be mainly divided into two categories. First, we opened graphene's band gap to some extent through covalent and/or noncovalent chemical modifications, and installed sensing functions into graphene. In detail, we grafted nitrophenyl group onto graphene through an electrochemical method and methyl group onto graphene by plasma treatment to open its band gap. Also, we assembled lead sulfide or titanium dioxide onto graphene through electron beam evaporation to achieve optical or gas sensing. A rotaxane molecule with a bistable structure was also assembled onto graphene through pi-pi stacking to obtain optical switches with logic capability. On the other hand, we also fabricated graphene-based nanoelectrodes for making a new-generation molecular electronic devices with diverse functionalities. In detail, we cut graphene using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching to obtain graphene electrodes. Poly(3-hexyl thiophene) or copper phthalocyanine was spin-coated onto these electrodes to achieve field effect transistors with the high carrier mobility and photoresponsive property. We further developed graphene nanoelectrodes by dash-line lithography, and molecular bridges with different functions were connected between these nanoelectrodes. These single molecule devices can switch their conductance upon exposure to external stimuli, such as metal ion, pH and light. Looking into the future, graphene, as a representative of carbon-based nanomaterials, will continue to play an important role in the area of nano/molecular electronics.

Abstract:Graphene, as one of the most promising new materials, has a wide range of applications in biosensors, super-capacitors and catalysts. Herein, we focus on the covalent and noncovalent modification of both graphene and graphene oxide recently reported, and review the interesting properties, e.g., wider electrical band gap and higher dispersibility. We cover covalent derivatization of graphene and graphene oxide with various species, such as nitrenes, carbenes, aryl intermediates, polymers, biomaterials, carbon materials (fullerenes and carbon nanotubes), and organic molecules. As regards, noncovalent functionalization, we consider π–π interactions, van der Waals forces, ionic interactions, and hydrogen bonding. This review also covers some efforts to achieve tailored functionalization for applications. Finally, we assess the future prospects of covalently and noncovalently modified graphene and graphene oxide (Fig. 1).

Abstract:Aminophenol isomer functionalized graphene film electrodes are fabricated with wet-spinning technology for supercapacitors. According to the different electrochemical mechanisms of aminophenol isomers on graphene, we optimize the conditions of o-aminophenol combined graphene, achieving a high specific capacitance of 636 F g(-1) and excellent cycling stability of 97% after 16000 cycles.

Abstract:Carbon is an indispensible material for electrochemical energy storage applications. Graphene, with its high conductivity, high surface area, and high mechanical strength, has emerged as a magic material in the electrodes of the most advanced supercapacitors and lithium batteries. In this talk, I will demonstrate that graphene, with proper chemical functionalization, could play an important role in improving the lithium/sulfur cell’s active material utilization, specific capacity, as well as its cycle life. Using a nitrogen-functionalized graphene–sulfur electrode, we have achieved ultra-stable cycling exceeding 2000 cycles with a capacity decay rate as low as 0.028% per cycle. To understand the underlying mechanism of the electrochemical reaction processes, we developed various in-situ experimental tools so that we can conduct real time TEM and SEM Raman investigation during electrochemical measurements. Based on these in-situ and other ex-situ characterization results, we develop a way to prevent lithium dendrite formation by using an optimized electrolyte and to minimize sulfur loss through the chemical interactions of the functional groups on graphene with the active electrode material, i.e. sulfur or lithium sulfide, as well as with the intermediate lithium polysulfide products.

Abstract:In this work, the electrochemical synthesis of PANI and GO-modified PANI was performed using cyclic voltammetry, varying the amount of GO, 1 mg (PG1), 5 mg (PG5), and 10 mg (PG10) to analyze the effect of the amount of GO on the composite. PANI, PG1, PG5, and PG10 materials were characterized using optical microscopy, SEM, UV-vis, FTIR, Raman, and wettability. A stability test was also carried out by putting the materials to 500 oxidation-reduction cycles using cyclic voltammetry. The synthesis method allowed GO in PANI to be added through a chemical interaction between the two compounds. It was also found that the addition of GO led to an improvement in the hydrophilic character of the composite, which would lead to an improvement in the diffusion of reagents/species when the composites are used in aqueous media processes. The results of the stability test showed that the PG10 material presented a lower % loss of specific capacitance and energy compared with the other materials, which indicates that the GO presence (in the amount specified) improves the stability of the PANI. The PG10 material showed favorable and promising conditions for its use in fuel cell and battery processes.

Abstract:Stable dispersion of reduced graphene in various organic solvents was achieved via noncovalent functionalization with amine-terminated polymers. An aqueous dispersion of reduced graphene was prepared by chemical reduction of graphene oxide in aqueous media and was vacuum filtered to generate reduced graphene sheets. Good solvents and nonsolvents for the dried reduced graphene were evaluated using a solubility test. To achieve stable dispersion in the evaluated nonsolvents, amine-terminated polystyrene was noncovalently functionalized to the graphene, while graphene sheets were phase transferred via sonication from aqueous phase to the organic nonsolvent phase, including the amine-terminated polymers. Thorough FTIR and Raman spectroscopy investigation verified that the protonated amine terminal group of polystyrene underwent noncovalent functionalization to the carboxylate groups at the graphene surface, providing the high dispersibility in various organic media.
