Abstract:The design, construction and monitoring scheme of a deep excavation in Hangzhou soft clay is presented, and the main monitoring results are discussed in detail. It shows that the maximum horizontal deformations of large scale excavations were far larger than those narrow ones. Space effects affected the deflections of the excavation greatly. "Creep" deformation occurred apparently during the curing of the bottom slab of the basement. The distribution of the surface settlements seemed to be of parabola, and the settlement influence zone reached more than 1.5 H, where H is the final excavation depth, and the location of the maximum settlement was at 0.62 H away from the retaining wall with a value of 0.37 H. The ratio of the maximum ground settlement to the maximum horizontal deformation was about 0.3.

Abstract:This paper firstly performed an extensive investigation of a 30.2 m basement excavation (9310 m(2) in plan) in Hangzhou soft clay. The 52 m-deep diaphragm walls and six levels of concrete struts were adopted as retaining structures to reduce the deformations caused by excavation with the bottom-up method. To comprehensively study the characteristics of this large-scale excavation, the behaviors of diaphragm walls, struts, columns, the maximum wall deflection rate, ground surface settlement and utility pipelines were focused and investigated during the whole excavation process. Based on the analyses of measured data, the following major conclusions were obtained: (i) The wall and the ground experienced a maximum displacement increment in stage 6 which was the coupled product of the "creep effect" of Hangzhou soft clay and the "depth effect" of excavation. (ii) The soil excavated in deep can produce greater stress release than the soil excavated in shallow. However, the cast of base slabs can constrain the inward wall movements and the followed horizontal ground movements successfully. (iii) Benefit from the integrity of 52-m-deep diaphragm walls and six levels of concrete struts, more-uniform movements of the column in the vertical direction were produced. (iv) The ground surface and the utility pipelines experienced more time-dependent settlement due to the much longer exposure duration time in stage 4. (v) In this project, deflections near the excavation middle were up to 3.5 times of those near corners, implying that for a large excavation not adopting the zoned excavation technique, the behaviors of corner-stiffening are significant. (vi) A general relation between the excavation area and wall deflection was also presented based on this and 16 similar cases.

Abstract:This paper studied the excavation of a foundation pit above a running subway tunnel in Hangzhou soft soil. The zoned excavation and top-down construction techniques were adopted to control the deformation caused by foundation pit excavation. The excavation was divided into four parts, named Zone A, B, C, and D. Zone A adopted temporary diagonal bracing, and the control effect of deformation was poor; it was cancelled and changed to rapid excavation and thicker cushion in Zones B, C, and D. During the whole construction process, the lateral displacement and settlement of the diaphragm wall, surrounding ground surface, and building settlement were monitored and analysed. The data showed that the lateral displacement of the diaphragm wall was effectively reduced by the zoned excavation technique, and the maximum lateral displacement value of the diaphragm wall in Zone A was the least; rapid excavation and reduced soil exposure time also could effectively control the deformation, and the lateral displacement of the diaphragm wall in Zone C is less than Zone B and Zone D. The ground settlement is strongly related to the lateral displacement of the diaphragm wall. In order to reduce the surrounding ground and building settlements, efforts should be made to reduce the wall lateral displacement.

Abstract:Deep excavation in Xiaosan of Hangzhou was located in deep silty sand layer.The soil-nailing wall was the main type of pit-protection system;meanwhile,some types of composite soil-nailing support were adopted according to the depth and the circumstances of the excavation.The design idea and the characteristics of deep excavation engineering were introduced.The problem of soil-nailing support technology for deep excavation located in deep silty sand layer was analyzed and summarized to provide reference to the similar projects.

Abstract:A case history of a deep multi-strutted soft clay excavation in Hangzhou is presented in this paper. What makes it particular interest is its three characteristics: large scale, deep excavation and very soft clays. The excavated area was about 99750 square meters. The depth of excavation was 12.85 m. 4 m below the ground surface located about 24 m very soft soil clays. Wall deflections and ground settlements were measured and compared with similar case histories worldwide. It was shown that the maximum horizontal deformations of the excavation was very large which this excavation reached to 220 mm. “Creep” deformations occurred apparently during the curing of the bottom slab of the basement. The distributions of the surface settlements seemed to be parabolic, and the settlement influence zone could reach to a distance of more than 2H, whereHis the final excavation depth. The ratio between the maximum ground settlement and the maximum horizontal deformation of the wall is about 0.6.

Abstract:It is common to have a foundation pit accident, when failing to deal with the effect of confined water. In order to avoid such accidents, the Jiangnan launching shaft of Qingchun Road River-Crossing Tunnel in Hangzhou was investigated. According to the analysis of on-site monitoring data of wall deflection, settlement, and strut load, some conclusion can be drawn. Firstly, the wall deflection is closely related to the plane size of the foundation pit, and through strengthening the stiffness of the central support, the wall deflection can be greatly controlled. Secondly, the maximum settlement point is 0.5 times depth of the excavation away from retaining wall. Finally, load in the first level strut gradually decreased during the construction, and even can turn to be tensile force.

Abstract:The deformation behavior of deep excavations is affected by many factors, among which the geological conditions are greatly affected. Hangzhou Bay is affected by marine siltation and river alluvium, and the geological conditions within the urban area of Hangzhou are quite different. In this paper, the geological and deformation data of 79 deep excavation cases in the Hangzhou urban area were collected, and the statistical analysis showed that the deformation control of excavations in the silt area was poor. The average maximum lateral wall displacement of deep excavations of the Hangzhou urban area was 0.41%H (H was the depth of the excavation), the average value of the alluvial area was 0.22%H, and the average value of the silted area was 0.55%H. The influence of geological conditions, wall type, and construction period on the deformation of excavations was compared, and the deformation behavior of excavations in the silted area was clearly affected by various factors.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern cities, the number of deep excavation sites adjacent to complicated surroundings is increasing significantly. The construction of excavations will change the soil stress around the site and affect the surrounding circumstance. According to the practice of a sandy deep foundation site neighboring the metro tunnel in Hangzhou, the retaining structure of deep foundation and the deformation of tunnel nearby during the construction of excavation are simulated by Plaxis considering the attenuation law of the deformation of the soils around the foundation. By analyzing the measured data, the results show that the calculated results are is basically consistent with the field surveys. Furthermore, the retaining structure, surrounding sandy soils and the adjacent tunnel will shift toward the site during the construction of deep excavation. The deformation rules greatly related with the construction schedule of excavation and the distance of site. This study may provide reference for the design of sandy deep foundation pit engineering.

Abstract:Based on the assumption of the Prandtl soil slip failure models and the consideration of the effect of confined water,the upper-bound limit analysis theory is adopted to establish the analysis method of the basal stability against upheaval and check formula.With the proposed formulas,the effects of the confined water head,the thickness of the impermeable soil layer and the depth of the retaining wall on the stability coefficient are discussed.Calculation results indicate that it is necessary to consider the effect of the confined water on the stability against upheaval of deep excavation,and the safety factor would be smaller with the increase of the confined water head.The comparison demonstrates the applicability of the method.The results provide a reasonable calculation method for the design of foundation pit subjected to confined water in soft clay.

Abstract:This paper investigates the performance of a top-down deep excavation in soil-rock composite stratum. The behavior of the excavation bracing system, consisting of ground anchors and end-suspended piles, has not been well understood due to the lack of relevant research. Based on the observed data of a typical deep excavation case history for the May Fourth Square Station in Tsingtao, China, the characteristics of the horizontal and vertical pile displacements, ground surface settlements, building settlements, axial forces in ground anchors, earth pressure, and pore water pressure during excavation were analysed. Two-dimensional finite element simulations were carried out to further explore the deformation and internal force responses of end-suspended piles and to capture the effects of pile diameter, embedded depth, and rock-socketed depth on the horizontal displacement and bending moment distributions along the pile shaft. It was found that the pattern of the vertical pile displacements could be categorized into three types: rapid settlement, slow settlement, and rapid heave. The magnitudes of the ground and building responses can be well controlled within allowable limits by combining the top-down method with the adopted bracing system. Among the investigated parameters, pile diameter is dominant in affecting the horizontal pile displacement. The primary influence zone for pile bending moment varies, depending on the parameters. It is recommended that a combination of top-down method, ground anchors, and end-suspended piles be adopted for restraining excavation deformation and lowering construction costs of similar deep excavations in soil-rock composite stratum.
Analysis of deformation characteristics of foundation pit of metro station and adjacent buildings induced by deep excavation in soft soil

Abstract:In order to obtain a deeper understanding of the deformation characteristics of the retaining structure and the adjacent buildings of deep foundation pit of metro station caused by deep excavation in soft soil, systematic monitoring and result analysis of deep foundation pit engineering of a metro station in deep soft clay area were carried out. It was found that grooving of diaphragm wall will cause lateral displacement of adjacent soil. The maximum lateral displacement of soil accounts for about 20% of the lateral displacement of soil during excavation of foundation pit. The average values of maximum lateral displacement of the retaining wall on the south side (namely the side of the pile foundation buildings) and the north side (namely the side of the shallow foundation buildings) during soil excavation were 0.091% H-e and 0.120% H-e, respectively. When the value of y/H-e (y is the distance between vertical continuous wall direction and diaphragm wall, and H-e is the excavation depth) is less than 0.92, the magnitude of the settlement and differential settlement induced by excavation was relatively larger. The settlement of the ground surface was close to that of the shallow foundation settlement, while the settlement of the pile foundation was obviously less than that of the shallow foundation building among which the rock-socketed pile foundation building had the smallest deformation value. Both the shallow foundation buildings and pile foundation buildings were affected by spatial effect which was more obvious when the value of xffie (x, the distance from the corner in the longitudinal direction) was less than 1.5. When the value of x/H-e was greater than 2.0, the soil deformation near the adjacent buildings and retaining structures approached to a plane strain state.
Force and Deformation Characteristics of Large-Scale Zoning Excavation in Soft Soil: A Case Study in Hangzhou

Abstract:The zoning excavation method is fully employed to control the deformation of foundation pits constructed in urban soft soil areas. However, the similarities and differences in forces and deformations between foundation pits excavated by the zonal method and those excavated by the conventional method still need to be further explored. In this study, the deformation was monitored and analyzed by taking the zonal excavation of a foundation pit of the ‘New World’ project in Hangzhou City as the research object. The measured results showed that the pre-built diaphragm wall for the first excavated foundation pit restricted the deformation of the first excavated diaphragm wall. The presence of extensive construction and unloading activities also changed the deformation pattern of the soil. Further, finite element simulations were carried out. The simulation results revealed that excavating the foundation pit first caused displacements in the pre-built diaphragm wall. The displacements transmitted by non-adjacent pits through the pre-built diaphragm wall were small and were concentrated at the junction of the two sub-pits. Adjacent foundation pits caused large displacements of the pre-built diaphragm wall with similar displacement patterns. The results of the study can provide effective guidance for foundation pit excavation in soft soil areas in the future.

Abstract:In order to study the influence of subarea excavation on the deformation and stress behavior of a subway foundation pit, the deep horizontal wall displacement, supporting axial force and surface deformation were measured and compared with other similar pit cases according to the case of a soft soil deep foundation pit for a metro station in Hangzhou. The results of the theoretical and experimental studies show that zoned excavation can reduce the aspect ratio of a single foundation pit and then the spatial effect of small excavation can be mobilized, which can effectively control lateral wall deformation and wall deformation. Higher stiffness can strengthen the integrity of the foundation pit and provide more lateral force to prevent excessive axial force fluctuation in the deep foundation pit, and its restraining effect is greater than the first excavation foundation pit. The difference in the distribution of buildings on both sides of the long and narrow pit will lead to a different deformation of the walls on both sides, which warrants attention in the design and construction.

Abstract:Research purposes: There are considerable uncertainties existing in deep excavation activities and the field monitoring data cannot directly reflect the present excavation stability condition in most cases.In this paper,combing Bayesian updating with Monte Carlo finite element method,real-time reliability assessment of stability during the excavation of Pengbu station of Hangzhou Metro is performed based on field measurement data. Research conclusions: The results show that,in comparison with conventional method,it is more rational to estimate the failure probability of deep excavation by use of field monitoring data.This method can effectively enhance the accuracy of excavation stability analysis and avoid the problems resulting from the errors of the inclinometer readings.The horizontal displacement monitoring data of the diaphragm wall can be used as the input information of reliability analysis.The selection of failure criteria has a significant influence on the stability analysis results.The proposed method can compensate for the limitations of conventional reliability analysis and is a promising alternative method for stability analysis of excavation based on field monitoring data.

Abstract:A deep foundation pit in a station of the Hangzhou subway is adjacent to new high-rise residential buildings on the north side and to the Evergrande foundation pit being excavated on the south side. This work considers the excavation of the foundation pit in the subway station as the research subject, focuses on the difference of the deformation and Earth pressure between the north side and the south side of the foundation pit under these special working conditions through the analysis of the measured data, and compares it with an ordinary foundation pit. Analyzing the measured data reveals that the horizontal displacement of the retaining wall and the ground settlement are far larger on the north side than on the south side, and both often exceed the deformation alarm value; the deformation of the ordinary foundation pit is between the deformation of the overloaded (north) side and that of the unloaded (south) side of the foundation pit. Moreover, the maximum rate of the horizontal creep of the soil and the maximum rate of the creep caused by the ground settlement on the north side of the foundation pit are larger than those on the south side of the foundation pit; the maximum rate of the horizontal creep of the ordinary foundation pit is between the two. The active Earth pressure on the pit wall on the north side is higher than that on the south side of the foundation pit, and because of the surrounding unloading, passive Earth pressure is generated at the bottom of the pit wall on the south side of the foundation pit, which causes it to shift to the outside of the foundation pit. The settlement of the surrounding high-rise buildings and the settlement of the columns are all within the range of the alarm values; also, the buildings settle evenly. Due to the excavation and unloading on the south side of the foundation pit, the uplift of the columns is not considerable.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to analyze the observed performance of a deep excavation facing severe restrictions from underground facilities or structures in Suzhou, China. The first source of the restrictions comes from two shallowly buried pressurized pipelines that straddle the excavation at an intersection angle of about 81 degrees. The pipelines need to be well protected at the site during the construction to ensure the normal life of the local resident. The second source of the restrictions arises from the twin tunnels that are planned to be constructed beneath the excavation in the future for Suzhou Metro Line 14. The planned tunnels will be constructed using a tunnel boring machine, which necessitates the reservation of favorable conditions by the present excavation project. Because of these restrictions, the form of the excavation support system becomes complicated, and the performance of the excavation will inevitably differ from that of the common excavations. Based on a thorough analysis of the extensive field performance data collected by means of settlement points and inclinometers located within and adjacent to the excavation, the characteristics of the ground surface settlements, lateral ground movements, ground water table variations, vertical and lateral displacements atop diaphragm walls, vertical displacements atop lattice column, axial forces in concrete strut, and vertical and lateral pipeline de-formations are captured. Despite the discontinuity of the peripheral retaining wall and the shortened wall height on the discontinuous sides, the ground and structural deformations are well controlled by the specially designed excavation support system. The pipelines are slightly uplifted by the suspension system, with the maximum vertical pipeline displacement being lower by an order of magnitude than the commonly observed maximum pipeline settlements in the literature. The existing empirical envelops are found to be site-specific in applica-bility, and are recommended to incorporate the field observations of this unusual deep braced excavation case history.
Analysis of Retaining Structure and Surrounding Soils of Deep Excavation Supported by Single Concrete Bracing

Abstract:The horizontal displacements of retaining piles are monitored through the excavation of a deep pit supported by concrete bracing and piles,and it is found that the deformation mode of retaining piles is interior convex,and the displacements of piles are different due to the difference of horizontal bracing stiffness.The practical project is simulated by FEM,and the results show that the mode of ground settlement is groove under interior convex mode.The maximum settle ment is at 0.6 times of excavation depth,and the displacement fields of soils outside the excavation can be divided into three zones:concave settlement region,transition region and heave region.The main range of influence on soil settlement is within the excavation depth.The analysis shows that the horizontal deformation of deep soil outside excavation transforms from interior convex mode to cantilever mode with the increase of distance.
Base Stability Analysis of Braced Deep Excavation in Undrained Anisotropic Clay with Upper Bound Theory

Abstract:It is imperative to evaluate factor of safety against basal heave failure in the design of braced deep excavation in soft clay. Based on previously published field monitoring data and finite element analyses of ground settlements of deep excavation in soft clay, an assumed plastic deformation mechanism proposed here gives upper bound solutions for base stability of braced deep excavations. The proposed kinematic mechanism is optimized by the mobile depth (profile wavelength). The method takes into account the influence of strength anisotropy under plane strain conditions, the embedment of the retaining wall, and the locations of the struts. The current method is validated by comparison with published numerical study of braced excavations in Boston blue clay and two other cases of excavation failure in Taipei. The results show that the upper bound solutions obtained from this presented method is more accurate as compared with the conventional methods for basal heave failure analyses.
