Abstract:Direct C-H functionalization of aryl ethers remains challenging owing to their low reactivity and selectivity. Herein, a novel strategy for nondirected C-H alkenylation of aryl ethers promoted by a dual ligand catalyst was demonstrated. This catalytic system readily achieved the highly efficient alkenylation of alkyl aryl ethers (anisole, phenetole, n-propyl phenyl ether, n-butyl phenyl ether and benzyl phenyl ether), cyclic aryl ethers (1,4-benzodioxan, 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, dibenzofuran), and diphenyl oxides. Moreover, the proposed methodology was successfully employed for the late-stage modification of complex drugs containing the aryl ether motif. Interestingly, the compounds developed herein displayed fluorescent properties, which would facilitate their biological applications.

Abstract:A highly efficient palladium-catalyzed Heck coupling reaction of heteroaryl halides with electron-rich vinyl ether and hydroxyalkyl vinyl ethers is described. It was found that the choice of solvent, ligand, and reaction temperature had a fundamental influence on the regioselectivity and reactivity of the reaction, and the combination of Pd(OAc)2 and DPPF in ethylene glycol led to the most effective catalytic system. Under these conditions, a variety of heteroaryl halides reacted very quickly with electron-rich olefins to afford exclusively the branched products in good to excellent yields without employing triflates, halide scavengers, or ionic liquids.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed, highly efficient Heck arylation of electron-rich N,N-diprotected allylamine derivatives with a wide range of aryl bromides under ligand-free conditions has been developed. In the presence of Pd(OAc)2 and an appropriate additive, the reaction proceeds with excellent regioselectivity and stereoselectivity, leading exclusively to the γ-arylated (E)-allylamine products in good to excellent yields. It was found that the choice of solvent, olefin, additive and temperature has an important influence on the reaction. Worthy of note is that good results were observed only when using N,N-diprotected allylamines containing carbamate moiety, and the steric properties of allylamines also have important impacts on the regiocontrol. The use of TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy) or HQ (hydroquinone) as the additive is also crucial for securing a faster reaction rate. This method provides a straightforward approach for the efficient synthesis of various γ-arylated, linear (E)-allylamines.

Abstract:The diol-functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids, 1-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (1) and 2,2-bis(1-methyl-methylimidazolium) propane-1,3-diol hexafluorophosphate (2), were synthesized and used as the phosphine-free ligands in the palladium-catalyzed Heck reaction of aryl bromides with electron-deficient olefins. Under aerobic conditions, the efficient arylation of acrylates could be accomplished when catalyzed by PdCl2-2 (or 1) in DMF with Et3N as a base, in terms of good activities, excellent selectivities (to trans-coupling products), and reusability, due to the available multiple coordinating sites like bidentate diol and NHC carbene in the ligands.

Abstract:Highly efficient palladium-catalyzed Heck coupling of aryl nonaflates with electron-rich vinyl ethers, and enamides is described. Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed regioselective Heck arylation of the electron-rich olefins, vinyl ethers 1a-d, enamides 1e-g, and allyltrimethylsilane 1h, has been accomplished in imidazolium ionic liquids with a wide range of aryl bromides and iodides instead of the commonly used, but commercially unavailable and expensive, aryl triflates. The reaction proceeded with high efficiency and remarkable regioselectivity without the need for costly or toxic halide scavengers, leading exclusively to substitution by aryl groups of diverse electronic and steric properties at the olefinic carbon alpha to the heteroatom of 1a-g and beta to the heteroatom of 1h. In contrast, the arylation reaction in molecular solvents led to mixtures of regioisomers under similar conditions. Several lines of evidence point to the unique regiocontrol stemming from the ionic environment provided by the ionic liquid that alters the reaction pathway. The chemistry provides a simple, effective method for preparing branched, arylated olefins and contributes to the extension of Heck reaction to a wider range of substrates.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed Heck diarylation of terminal olefins under ligand-free conditions in acetic acid is described. This procedure allows double arylation of terminal olefins affording trisubstituted olefins in good to excellent yields. The methodology is applicable to the coupling of both electron-deficient and electron-rich aryl iodides leading to symmetrical and unsymmetrical β,β-diarylated alkenes.

Abstract:A general and convenient palladium-catalyzed oxidative Heck arylation of both N-protected and N,N-diprotected allylic amines with arylboronic acids under mild conditions has been developed. The catalyst system, consisting of Pd(OAc)2 (palladium acetate), AgOAc (silver acetate) and KHF2 (potassium hydrogen fluoride), could efficiently catalyze the coupling reaction in acetone without the aid of any ligand, leading exclusively to the -arylated allylic amine products in good to excellent yields. This method is highlighted with excellent regio- and stereocontrol and remarkable functional group tolerance. The carbamate moiety in allylic amine substrates is of crucial importance to the catalytic performance, and the chelation between the carbonyl O (oxygen) and Pd (palladium) atoms is believed to be responsible for the high regioselectivity and stereoselectivity observed.

Abstract:Palladium(II)-catalyzed highly regioselective and stereoselective decarboxylative arylation of unactivated olefins with aryl carboxylic acids has been developed. This method is applicable to a variety of unactivated olefins, including allylamides, long chain functionalized olefins and purely aliphatic olefins, leads to the formation of linear E-configured products in high yields. Both electron-rich and electron-deficient aryl carboxylic acids are suitable arylation reagents. It was found that the choice of solvent, catalyst precursor and oxidant had an important influence on reaction efficiency. As a co-solvent and ligand, DMSO is critical to catalysis. This chemistry expands the scope of decarboxylative arylation of olefins with aryl carboxylic acids, and provides a rapid access to useful linear arylation products of unactivated olefins.

Abstract:Remarkable progress has been made on chelation-assisted α and β C–H functionalization of aryl alkenes; however, there is no report on C–H allylation reactions. This work focuses on the first α and β C–H allylation of aryl alkenes using allyl carbonates to produce linear and branched 1,4-dienes enabled by chelation-assistance of pyridine-2-carboxamide, simply performed with Pd(OAc) 2 /AcOH in ethanol. This operationally simple protocol exhibited wide functionality tolerance and broad substrate scope and enabled successful gram-scaled preparation.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed allylic C-H arylation reaction with electron-deficient arenes with high regio- and stereoselectivity is reported. This work represents the first successful use of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol as the ancillary ligand in allylic C-H activation, which is the key factor for chemoselectivity. Furthermore, high selectivity allylic C-H acetoxylation and amination were also successfully achieved under the same catalytic system.

Abstract:A palladium‐catalyzed highly regioselective and stereoselective direct arylation of allylamine derivatives with a wide range of thiophenes and furans has been developed. In the presence of palladium(II) acetate [Pd(OAc) 2 ] catalyst and appropriate oxidants, the coupling reaction proceeded with excellent group compatibility and high efficiency, leading exclusively to γ‐arylated linear ( E )‐allylamines. It was found that the choice of solvent, olefin substrate and oxidant had an important influence on reaction efficiency, and the use of sterically demanding N , N ‐diprotected allylamines bearing a carbamate moiety is crucial for securing high regioselectivity and stereoslectivity. This method provides a straightforward approach for the efficient synthesis of various γ‐heteroarylated, linear ( E )‐allylamines.

Abstract:[Ag-4(L)(4)](PF6)(4) and [Pd(L)(2)](PF6)(2) (L = 3-(2,4-dimethyl-1,8-naphthyrid-7-yl)-l-picolylimidazolylidene) have been prepared and fully characterized. The silver compound consists of a Ag-4 ring with short Ag-Ag contacts displaying a butterfly conformation. The palladium complex exhibits a helical structure with palladium located in a square-planar environment with two carbene ligands and two pyridines in a cis arrangement. The palladium complex has proven to be a highly efficient catalyst for Heck coupling reactions of aryl bromides with n-butyl acrylate. TON values up to 10(6) and TOF values up to 5 x 10(5) h(-1) can be achieved.

Abstract:In this work, an efficient palladium-catalyzed Heck-type reaction was successfully used to synthesize a wide range of monoaryl- or diaryl-substituted P-ligands with excellent yields and diastereoselectivity (up to 98% yield, dr >20:1). The preliminary mechanistic studies demonstrated that it possibly underwent a cationic Heck reaction that was assisted by silver salt, and it revealed the significant role of P(O)Ar-2 for excellent yields and diastereoselectivity.

Abstract:A highly efficient protocol for the Pd-catalyzed regioselective Heck arylation of the electron-rich olefin N-acyl-N-vinylamine with aryl halides has been developed. In the presence of hydrogen-bond donor [H2NiPr2][BF4] as an additive, this proceeds smoothly in isopropanol to afford exclusively the branched products in high yields.
