Abstract:prehalogenation of the substrates is required, and the formation of undesired halide by-products is unavoidable. In addition to the conventional Heck reaction, the use of organometallic reagents is also an attractive strategy. These reactions usually require a catalytic amount of Pd in the presence of an appropriate oxidant (Scheme 1, path B). Despite the wide application of this “oxidative Heck reaction”, preactivation of the aromatic carbon fragments is also required. Catalytic functionalization of arenes via C H bond activation provides a potentially economic and clean method for making many chemicals directly from hydrocarbons. Fujiwara et al. developed an efficient coupling of arenes and activated alkenes through an oxidative palladium(II)-catalyzed process, which is known as the Fujiwara– Moritani oxidative Heck reaction (Scheme 1, path C). Since then, substantial progress has been made to improve the efficiency and practicality of this reaction, such as the improvement of the regioselectivity, and the use of molecular dioxygen as a reoxidant.
