Abstract:Objective To investigate the proportions and features of tumors,cysts and tumor-like lesions in the oral-maxillofacial region.Methods 9 056 cases of primary tumors,cysts and tumor-like lesions in the oral-maxillofacial region which were confirmed by pathological diagnosis(from January 1955 to December 2006 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,Second Affiliated Hospital,School of Medicine,Zhejiang University) were retrospectively analyzed about their clinical pathological features,histological types,gender proportions and primary locations.Results There were 6 337 cases of tumors,2 363 cysts and 356 tumor-like lesions in the oral-maxillofacial region.Among the tumors,the benign tumor accounted 56.7%(3 596/6 337) while the malignant tumor took up 43.3%(2 747/6 337).Pleomorphic adenoma,hemangioma and ameloblastoma were the most common benign tumors.While the principle malignant tumor was carcinoma(86.2%,2 367/2 747),most of which were squamous cell carcinoma(50.0%,1 184/2 367),majorly in tongue,gingiva and cheek,with a gender ratio of 2.34∶1.Meanwhile,the most common benign and malignant salivary gland tumors were pleomorphic adenoma and adenocarcinoma,respectively,commonly sited in parotid gland,submandibular gland,palatine gland and parotid gland,palatine gland,submandibular gland,respectively.The dentigerous cyst(33.9%,408/1 202) and the sublingual gland cyst(41.1%,477/1 161) were the most common types of the odontogenic cysts and non-odontogenic cysts in the oral-maxillofacial region separately.The most frequent tumor-like lesion was epulis (54.8%,195/356).Conclusion Within this research,tumor is the most common lesion,with a number of begnin tumor more than malignant tumor,and the amount of male patients is larger than that of female patients with tumors,cysts or tumor-like lesions in the oral-maxillofacial region(261 words).
Clinicopathological Analysis of 2489 Cases of Salivary Gland Epithelial Tumours

Abstract:Objective: To investigate clinicopathological characteristics of salivary gland epithelial tumours.Methods: 2489 cases of salivary gland epithelial tumours were statistically analysed.Results: Adenoid cystic carcinoma,mucoepidermoid carcinoma and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma were the mostly encountered three types in 840 cases of malignant epithelial tumours,while pleomorphic adenoma,Warthin tumour and basal cell adenoma were the mostly encountered three types in 1649 cases of benign epithelial tumours.The ratio of male to female of malignant and benign epithelial tumours was 1.13:1 and 0.99:1,respectively.The average age of malignant and benign epithelial tumours was 47.86 and 44.86 years old,respectively.Parotid gland and palate were the most common locations of salivary gland epithelial tumours.Conclusion: Adenoid cystic carcinoma and pleomorphic adenoma are the most common type of salivary gland malignant and benign epithelial tumours,respectively.

Abstract:PURPOSE: To analyse the clinical epidemiologic features of epithelial tumors of the salivary glands from 1990 to 2005. METHODS: 1209 cases of epithelial tumors of salivary glands who were treated at the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital, Medical College of Nanjing University from 1990 to 2005 were retrospectively studied. The pathological types and distributions of location, age and sex of them were analysed. RESULTS: In 1209 cases, the ratio of benign to malignant tumors was 1.96∶1, and that of male to female was nearly 1∶1. The most common type of benign tumors was pleomorphic adenoma, followed by Warthin's tumor. Accordingly, the most common malignant tumor was mucoepidermoid carcinoma, followed by adenoid cystic carcinoma. As to the location, benign and malignant tumors were alike. They developed mostly in the parotid gland, followed by the palatal minor salivary gland and the submandibular gland. The age of the patients was mostly concentrated between 20 and 70 years old. CONCLUSIONS: Epithelial tumors of the salivary glands can occur in any ages. The morbility of benign tumor is more than that of malignant one. The most common type of epithelial tumors of salivary glands is still pleomorphic adenoma.
Clinicopathological study on primary salivary gland tumors of pharynx,larynx and cervical trachea

Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinicopathologic characters of primary minor salivary gland tumor in the pharynx,larynx and cervical trachea. Methods 13 cases with primary minor salivary gland tumor in the pharynx,larynx and cervical trachea were analyzed retrospectively.The exact diagnosis of the tumors was determined by frozen pathological examination.Two cases of pleomorphic adenoma of the parapharyngeal space and two cases of laryngeal pleomorhic adenoma were removed by transcervical approaches.Two cases of pharyngeal myoepithelioma and two cases of small pleomorhic adenoma in the parapharyngeal space were excised by transoral approaches.A case of supraglottic adenoid cystic carcinoma(T1N0M0) was removed by supraglottic horizontal hemilaryngectomy.Two cases of subglottic adenoid cystic carcinoma were excised by hemilaryngectomy.Two cases of malignant cervical trachea neoplasm were removed with trachea segmental resection and end-to-end anastomosis and postoperative radiotherapy was given. Results The ratio of malignant and benign neoplasm among 13 tumors was 2:1 and male-female ratio was 1:2.The lesion sites were as follows: 6 cases in the pharynx,4 cases in the larynx,2 cases in the cervical trachea.Of 8 cases of benign tumors whose disease course was from 10 days to 2 months,6 cases were pleomorphic adenoma and 2 cases were myoepithelioma.Of 5(4) malignant tumors,4 cases were adenoid cystic carcinoma and one case was mucoepithelioma.All patients were uneventful.After 2~12 years follow-up survey,2 patients of 8 cases with benign tumors lost follow-up survey after operation,one case died of other diseases and the other five cases did no relapse;one patients of 5 cases with malignant tumor lost follow-up survey and other four cases were free from their primary malignant tumors. Conclusion Primary minor salivary gland tumors in the pharynx,larynx and cervical trachea have their special features that early symptoms are not typical or not distinct and local function can be affected when tumors develop gradually.These tumors can be treated by operation.

Abstract:The aims of this study were to investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of epithelial salivary gland tumours in a northern Chinese population and to evaluate the current TNM classification system. A demographic and descriptive analysis of 7190 epithelial salivary gland tumours was performed. There were 4654 benign tumours and 2536 malignant tumours. The percentage of tumours located in the parotid, submandibular, sublingual, and minor salivary glands was 62.66%, 9.92%, 2.57%, and 24.85%, respectively; 22.26%, 35.76%, 92.97%, and 61.89% of the tumours, respectively, were malignant. Over 90% in the tongue and maxillary sinus were malignant. Warthin tumour, salivary duct carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma were predominant in males, while basal cell adenoma, myoepithelioma, and pleomorphic adenoma were predominant in females. Further, 2.55% of the tumours were in children and adolescents: 44.81% of the tumours were malignant, as opposed to 35.02% in adults. According to the 7th TNM classification, the percentages of T3 and stage III tumours were approximately 10%. Salivary gland tumours show distribution patterns according to histological type, location, and patient age and sex. The limitations of the current TNM classification of salivary gland carcinoma should be considered and revisions made.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics of salivary gland tumors and their pathological types.Methods Data from 2 456 patients with salivary gland tumors diagnosed between January 1973 and December 2018 at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University were collected, and their gender, age and tumor pathological type, location, and benign and malignant composition ratios were retrospectively analyzed.Results Over the 46-year study period, 2 456 patients with salivary gland tumors were treated; 41.9% were female, and 58.1% were male. The peak incidence was found among the 40 to 60 years of age group, in which 593 (24.1%) patients had malignant tumors and 1 863 (75.9%) had benign tumors. The ratio of benign and malignant tumors was 3.1∶1. The top two most common benign tumors were pleomorphic adenoma (58.7%) and Warthin tumors (33.6%). The top two most common malignant tumors were mucoepidermoid carcinoma (27.7%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (26.1%). The most common sites of benign pleomorphic adenomas were the parotid glands, palate, and submandibular glands. Mucinous epidermoid carcinomas in malignant tumors were common in the parotid glands and small salivary glands. The incidence of salivary gland tumors in this group has increased each year, and this group accounted for 53.3% of the total cases over the past 10 years.Conclusion The number of patients with salivary gland tumors is increasing each year. The total incidence of salivary gland tumors is higher in men than in women. Large salivary gland tumors are mainly benign tumors, and small salivary gland tumors are more common. Polymorphic adenomas, Warthin tumors, and mucoepidermoid carcinomas are the most common tumor types; patients 40~60 years old are most likely to have benign salivary glands and have a high incidence of malignant tumors.
Analysis of Clinicopathologic Features and Prognosis in 10 Patients with Non-Epithelial Malignant Neoplasmas of the Larynx and Hypopharynx

Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinicopathologic features,diagnosis and treatment of non-epithelial malignant tumors of larynx and hypopharynx. Methods From 1979 to 2002,the clinicopathologic features,diagnosis and treatment of 10 patients with non-epithelial malignant neoplasmas of larynx and hypopharynx were retrospectively analyzed.Primary lesions of 8 cases located at larynx whose pathological types included 5 sarcomas,2 lymphomas and 1 extramedullary plasmacytoma;Lesions of 2 cases located in hypopharynx.whose pathological types included 1 primary carcinosarcoma and 1 metastatic carcinoma diffused from stomach through lymphoma.All patients were treated with surgery combined with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Results 2 patients with free-neoplasm have outlived for 7 years or 8 years respectively;other 7 patients with free-neoplasm had died in 1-6 years after surgery;and 1 case lost follow-up. Conclusion Non-epithelial malignant neoplasm in larynx and hypopharynx is uncommon and has poor prognasis.Immunohistochemistry staining is helpful for the final diagnosis.The therapy must differ from different types of tumors.

Abstract:In our study, 3461 cases of salivary gland tumor treated between 1955 and 2002 at West China Stomatology Hospital of Sichuan University were retrospectively analyzed, and compared with the previous reports. Measures such as age, tumor location, tumor histological type, and the nature of the growth (benign or malignant) were recorded at the same time. The findings are as follows: the average ages of salivary gland tumor patients were 41.38 years for the benign cases and 45.20 for the malignant ones; the male:female ratio was 0. 99:1 in the benign cases and 1.34:1 in the malignant ones; primary tumors were mostly in the parotid gland, palate and submandibular gland in sequence. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most frequent benign tumor followed by Warthin's tumor and basal cell adenoma, whereas mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified were the most frequent malignant tumors. The incidence of salivary gland tumors increased with age. The male:female ratio of malignant tumors was higher than that of benign ones. The parotid gland and palate were the most common locations of salivary gland tumors. Pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma were the most frequent benign and malignant tumors, respectively.

Abstract:Chinese patients have a higher rate of lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) and salivary duct carcinoma (SDC). Comprehensive use of diagnostic modalities, neck dissection, and postoperative radiation will improve the treatment results for salivary gland tumors (SGTs).To study the clinicopathological characteristics of SGTs in a Chinese population.The records of SGT patients operated in a tertiary cancer hospital of China were retrieved.From December 1997 to December 2007, 289 malignant and 887 benign SGTs were operated at Cancer Hospital, Shanghai, China. Pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin's tumor were the most common types of SGT. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (24.6% of malignant cases) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (18.0%) were the most frequent malignant cases, followed by acinic cell carcinoma (12.1%), LEC (9.7%), and SDC (9.3%). The sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound scan, fine needle aspiration biopsy, and frozen section were 58.3 and 88.6%, 87.2 and 96.7%, 86.9 and 99.6%, respectively. Neck dissections and postoperative radiation were carried out for 48.6 and 48.0% of carcinomas, respectively. The percentage of tumors by pathologic TNM stage were 23.7% for stage I, 32.9% for stage II, 17.3% for stage III, and 26.1% for stage IV. The 5-year overall survival rate was 88.0%.
Clinicopathological Analysis of 303 Cases of Submandibular Gland Tumors

Abstract:Objective:To investigate clinicopathological characteristics such as the type of histology,the constituent ratio,the distribution of sex,age,size and recurrence of submandibular gland tumors(SGT).Methods:The clinical and pathological data of 303 cases of SGT were statistically analysed.Results:216 cases(71.29%) were benign epithelial tumors;79 cases(26.07%) were malignant epithelial tumors;6 cases(1.98%) were soft tissue tumors;2 cases(0.66%) were haematolymphoid tumors.Pleomorphic adenoma,myoepithelioma and Warthin tumor were the mostly encountered three types of benign epithelial tumors.Adenoid cystic carcinoma,carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma,mucoepidermoid carcinoma and acinic cell carcinoma were the mostly encountered four types of malignant epithelial tumors.The ratio of male to female of benign and malignant epithelial tumors was 0.79:1 and 1.82:1 respectively.The average age of benign epithelial tumors was 37.5 years old,while the average age of malignant tumors was 47.8 years old.The average diameter of benign and malignant epithelial tumors was 2.55cm and 3.43cm,respectively.The recurrence rate of SGT was 6.93%,among which the recurrent pleomorphic adenoma accounted 76.2%.Conclusion:Pleomorphic adenoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma are the most common type of benign and malignant epithelial SGT,respectively.Benign epithelial tumors are more common in women,while malignant epithelial tumors are more common in men.The onset age of malignant epithelial tumors is later than benign epithelial tumors.The size of malignant epithelial tumors is larger than benign epithelial tumors.Recurrences appear to be much more likely in pleomorphic adenoma.
Clinical Analysis for Therapy and Prognosis of Adenocarcinoma Salivary Glands: A Report of 13 Cases

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the clinical features, the operative type and therapeutic-efficacy of adenocarcinoma salivary glands. Methods: Thirteen cases of salivary glands adenocarcinoma were reviewed and pathologic diagnosis was based on the WHO Classification. The clinical features were retrospectively analyzed and followed-up for prognosis. Results: Parotid gland was the most common location of salivary adenocarcinoma. In the 13 cases, the average age of onset was 49.6, with a male preponderance. The median survival time, 3-year and 5-year survival rate was 8.5years, 83.3%, and 66.7%, respectively. Conclusions: The male patients predominate in the incidence of adenocarcinoma salivary glands, with parotid as the predilection site, surgical operation as the main treatment, complete initial-operation as the key of the treatment. Individualization is needed in the regimens. The mortality occurs mainly within 6 years after operation, after which the survival time significantly prolongs.
[Pathological Character and Treatment of Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma of Salivary Gland].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To review and evaluate pathologic features and treatment of epithelial-myoepithelial.METHODS:Retrospectively reviewed 14 cases' pathological and clinical materials of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of salivary gland. Eight cases origine from parotid gland, 2 cases from hard palate, 3 cases from submandibular gland and 1 case from nasal cavity. Three cases were performed induction chemotherapy preoperation. One case had palliative radiotherapy. Thirteen cases were performed radical surgery and 6 cases had radiotherapy postoperation.RESULTS:Tumor arisen mostly from parotid gland and neck lymph node metastasis rate was 14.28% (2/14). The survival rate was calculated with Kaplan-Meier method. The overall 3-, 5- and 10-year survival rate were 67.20%, 45.49% and 17.06%. Its histological characteristics were inner layer composed by adenoid cells and outer layer composed by myoepithelial cells. Immunohistochemical exam show cytokeratin, S-100 and actin reaction positive.CONCLUSIONS:Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma easily develops recurrence. It is sensitivity to radiotherapy and chemotherapy to some extent. It is suitable to adopt surgical treatment as primary modality combined with other therapies.
[Clinical Analysis of Sixteen Cases of Lymphoepithelial Carcinoma of Salivary Gland].

Abstract:BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of salivary gland is a rare and special kind of malignant tumor, and has seldom been reported. This study was to summarize the clinical features, treatment and curative effect of this disease according to our experiences. METHODS Clinical data of 16 patients with pathologically confirmed primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma of salivary gland, treated in Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University from Jan. 1990 to Sep. 2004, were retrospectively analyzed, and survival analysis was performed with Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS The 16 patients with lymphoepithelial carcinoma of salivary gland accounted for 3.6% of all the patients diagnosed as malignant tumors of salivary gland simultaneously in our center. All patients had tumors occurred in unilateral gland, aged 15-57 years, with the female to male ratio of 1:1. All patients were from southern China. Except for 1 patient, the rest 15 had Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) serological tests. The positive rates of EBV-VCA-IgA, EBV-EA-IgA, and EBV-DNA enzyme were 93.3%, 66.7%, and 86.7%, respectively. All patients were treated with surgery, of which 9 received surgery only, 5 received surgery plus postoperative radiotherapy, 1 received surgery plus postoperative chemoradiotherapy, 1 received surgery plus chemotherapy. Four (25.0%) patients had postoperative pathology-proved ipsilateral cervical lymph node metastasis. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates of the 16 patients were 86.15%, 48.46%, and 24.23%. CONCLUSIONS Although lymphoepithelial carcinoma of salivary gland is poorly differentiated, the prognosis of this disease is good. Complete resection plus postoperative radiotherapy is possibly accommodating.
[Myoepithelial carcinoma of salivary glands: a clinical analysis of 13 cases].

Abstract:PURPOSE:This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 13 patients with myoepithelial carcinoma of salivary glands for improving the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment outcome. METHODS:Thirteen cases with myoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary glands in Xiangya Hospital from January 1992 to September 2010 were reviewed, including the clinical biological behavior, diagnosis,treatment and prognosis. RESULTS:Thirteen patients included 6 men and 7 women, aged from 14 to 71 years (median 40 years).The tumor occurred predominantly in the parotid gland (53.8%).Among the 13 cases,7 were clinically misdiagnosed as benign tumors and 2 were misdiagnosed pathologically. All cases underwent operation. Two cases received surgery plus adjuvant chemotherapy; five cases underwent surgery plus adjuvant radiotherapy. 4(30.8%) had cervical lymph node metastasis and 2 cases(15.4%) developed distant metastasis. Follow-up time ranged from 3 months to 6 years. Six cases died of local recurrence or distal metastasis. CONCLUSIONS:Myoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary glands is a rare tumor. The diagnosis is depended on histology and immunohistochemistry. The tumor has a high rate of distant metastasis and high rate of lymph node metastasis in T3 to T4 cases. Radical surgery is the treatment of choice. Elective neck dissection should be considered in T3 to T4 cN0 cases. The effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy needs to be investigated.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the clinical features, treatments and prognoses of malignant salivary gland tumors of the larynx. Methods: A total of 14 patients with malignant salivary gland tumors of the larynx diagnosed and treated in our hospital between 2003 and 2014 were analyzed retrospectively, and were compared with 62 patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results: (SEER) database of American for survival rates. Results Among 14 patients from our hospital, 9 males and 5 females, with a median of 66.5 years old; 8 patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma, 4 with mucoepidermoid carcinoma and 2 with adenocarcinoma; supraglottic, glottic and 4 subglottic malignancies respectively accounting for 5, 5 and 4 cases; 8 cases treated with surgery, 5 with surgery and postoperative radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy, and 1 with radiotherapy alone. The 14 patients showed a three-year overall survival rate of 50.0% and a five-year overall survival rate of 42.9%, respectively in contrast with the rates of 67.1% and 59.8% in SEER database. Conclusions: The malignant salivary gland tumor of the larynx is rare and it is difficult to be diagnosed early. It is more likely to occour local recurrence and distant metastasis. Extensive surgical resection with postoperative radiotherapy is advocated.

Abstract:In a series of 2871 epithelial salivary gland neoplasms managed in the Peking University School of Stomatology between 1974 and 1999, 86 arose in children <16 years of age (52 parotid, 12 submandibular gland, 2 sublingual gland, and 20 minor salivary gland). Considerable delay was encountered in diagnosis (benign 24 months and malignant 16 months). In this group of children, 46 tumours (53%) proved to be malignant, with an incidence in the parotid, submandibular, sublingual, and minor salivary glands of 31/52 (60%), 2/12, 0/2, and 13/20 (65%), respectively. Sixty-six of 86 neoplasms (77%) occurred in children between 10 and 16 years of age. Only six neoplasms were encountered in children of 5 years or younger, four of which were high-grade malignant tumours. Benign tumours were successfully treated by local excision with only one recurrence. Of 46 malignant neoplasms, 8 were treated palliatively; of the remainder 8 were lost to follow-up and 2 patients died of their disease.
Carcinoma of the Salivary Gland: a Clinicopathologic Study of 405 Cases.

Abstract:Four hundred five cases with carcinoma of salivary glands were analyzed clinicopathologically; 181 tumors were located in parotid, 52 were in submandibular, 21 were in sublingual, and 151 were in minor salivary glands. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma were the most common histologic types. The overall 3-, 5-, 10-, and 15-year survival rates were 77.8%, 69.6%, 55.8%, and 36.7%, respectively. The difference between survival and recurrence-free survival rate was 9%. The prognosis of acinic cell carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma was much better than that of squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and undifferentiated carcinoma. The survival rates of minor salivary gland tumors was the highest, and those of submandibular gland tumors were the lowest. Postoperative radiotherapy improved the prognosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma. The overall recurrence rate was 40.2%; the cervical lymph node metastases rate was 15.3%, and the distant metastases rate was 11.1%.

Abstract:Background/purpose Secretory carcinoma (SC) is a rare salivary gland tumor that featured by ETV6::NTRK3 gene fusion, and was included in the WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumors since 2017. Nevertheless, the description of SCs by WHO is still vague. This study examined 18 SC cases by using both histomorphology and molecular pathology for diagnostic determination, especially immunohistochemical features of SCs. Materials and methods Based on WHO characteristics, 18 patients with SC admitted between 2001 and 2022 were included in this study. Main histomorphological patterns, FISH analyses of the ETV6::NTRK3 gene fusion, and immunohistochemical analyses of S100, mammaglobin, DOG1, ADFP, CA6 and Ki-67 were performed. Results Among the 18 SC patients, the median age of onset was 39.22 years. Grossly, the average tumor size in 2.96 cm with various texture from soft to tough. The majority patients were positive for S100, mammaglobin, and negative for DOG1, except for one patient negative for S100 ( Case 18 ). All patients were positive for ADFP, and the majority patients were negative for CA6, except for Case 9 . Two cases were found recurrence, and the tumor were found both in parotid gland with local invasion. Conclusion Combined with the results of previous studies, we proposed that the combination of all five markers, S100, mammaglobin, DOG1, ADFP and CA6, could contribute more to differential diagnosis of SCs with other salivary carcinomas, especially with AciCC. The prognosis of SCs is optimistic in most cases, but larger patient cohort and long-term follow-up are still needed.

Clinical Analysis of 116 Minor Salivary Gland Tumors of Palate

Abstract:Objective To investigate the pathological classification,diagnosis and treatment of minor salivary gland tumours of the palate.MethodsThe pathological type,diagnosis,treatment and prognosis were analyzed in 116 consecutive cases with salivary gland tumors of the palate from 1983 to 2006.ResultsAmong the 116 cases of salivary gland tumors of the palate,71 cases(61.21%)were benign tumor and most of them were pleomorphic adenoma;45 cases(38.79%)were malignant tumor,of which most were adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma took second place.Tirty-eight cases occurred in the soft palate,33 cases in hard palate and 45 cases at boundary of soft palate and hard palate.A total of 114 patients were treated by surgical operation.Ninety-five cases were followed up for more than 3 years after surgery.The recurrence rate was 7.4% in benign tumor and 22.0% in malignant tumor.ConclusionSurgical operationwas the best therapy for salivary gland tumors of the palate.Histology diagnosis should be obtained before operation.

Abstract:PURPOSE:The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical features, treatment and factors affecting the prognosis of patients with central salivary gland tumors of the jaws.METHODS:Twenty-two patients with central salivary gland tumors of the jaws at West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University in the recent 20 years were retrospectively analyzed according to the clinical features, treatment and factors affecting the prognosis. A thorough review of clinical records was performed and the histological diagnosis was revised according to the 2005 WHO criteria.RESULTS:Most central salivary gland tumors of the jaws occurred in middle-aged females. Diagnosis was difficult because clinical manifestations were not typical as swelling of the jaws, pain and tooth mobility were common. Most of these diseases were malignant and pathological types were diverse. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common type. Surgery was the primary treatment plan.CONCLUSIONS:It can be concluded that the final diagnosis in most patients with central salivary gland tumors of the jaws is acquired by preoperative biopsy. Surgery was the primary treatment method and radical resection is the first choice for the patients. The resection of sufficient frontier could reduce the chance of recurrence to a great extent.
