Abstract:In two-dimensional flat space, the oscillatory motion of a closed folded string--or alternatively, two massless particles connected by a string--can be quantized using the 't Hooft equation. This paper presents an alternative method for quantizing the folded string in anti-de Sitter space. By using variables inspired by integrability, setting $g \equiv {(R_\text{AdS})^2 \over 2\pi \alpha'}$ to a specific p-dependent $\mathcal{O}(1)$ value, and applying a particular boundary condition to the antisymmetrized wavefunction, we obtain a spectrum that precisely matches that of fermion bilinear operators in the disorder-averaged Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with p-fermion interactions.

Abstract:I summarize results recently obtained in collaboration with Amelino-Camelia, Bruno and Mandanici (preprint University of Rome “La Sapienza”, August, 2005) that concern an analysis of the path of a massless particle in a q -de Sitter space-time and an approximation scheme suitable for the corresponding analysis in a quantum FRW Universe. On the basis of some arguments in the quantum-gravity literature, the q deformation parameter is assumed to depend on both the Planck scale and the curvature, leading to results that are significantly different from those of other studies of Planck-scale effects in cosmology, where the possibility of an interplay between curvature and Planck scale was ignored.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the quantization of Yang-Mills theory in the de Sitter spacetime. It is observed that the Faddeev--Popov ghost propagator is divergent in this spacetime. However, this divergence is removed by using an effective propagator, which is suitable for perturbation theory. To show that the quantization of Yang--Mills theory in the de Sitter is consistent, we quantize it using first-class constraints in the temporal gauge. We also demonstrate that this is equivalent to quantizing the theory in the Lorentz gauge.

On the quantization of folded strings in non-critical dimensions

Abstract:Classical rotating closed string are folded strings. At the folding points the scalar curvature associated with the induced metric diverges. As a consequence one cannot properly quantize the fluctuations around the classical solution since there is no complete set of normalizable eigenmodes. Furthermore in the non-critical effective string action of Polchinski and Strominger, there is a divergence associated with the folds. We overcome this obstacle by putting a massive particle at each folding point which can be used as a regulator. Using this method we compute the spectrum of quantum fluctuations around the rotating string and the intercept of the leading Regge trajectory. The results we find are that the intercepts are $a=1$ and $a=2$ for the open and closed string respectively, independent of the target space dimension. We argue that in generic theories with an effective string description, one can expect corrections from finite masses associated with either the endpoints of an open string or the folding points on a closed string. We compute explicitly the corrections in the presence of these masses.

Semiclassical Quantization of the Superstring and Hagedorn Temperature

Abstract:In a recent paper [1], the semiclassical quantization of a string, winding once around the compact Euclidean time circle, on a supergravity background dual to the deep infrared regime of a confining finite temperature gauge theory, was carried out. The string mass-shell condition and, by extrapolation, the Hagedorn temperature to leading order in the holographic limit was deduced. In this work, we improve on those results in three ways. First, we fix some missing details of the related light-cone quantization analysis. Second, we reconsider the problem under the lens of a background-covariant geometrical formalism. This allows us to put the semiclassical mass-shell condition on more solid grounds. Finally, going beyond the semiclassical regime, we compute the Hagedorn temperature at next-to-leading order in the holographic limit. The sub-leading correction turns out to arise entirely from the contribution of the zero modes of the massive worldsheet scalar fields. Our result matches that of a recent analysis in the literature based on the Horowitz-Polchinski stringy star effective model.

Quantum Energy Density of Cosmic Strings with Nonzero Radius

Abstract:Zero-point fluctuations in the background of a cosmic string provide an opportunity to study the effects of topology in quantum field theory. We use a scattering theory approach to compute quantum corrections to the energy density of a cosmic string, using the "ballpoint pen" and "flowerpot" models to allow for a nonzero string radius. For computational efficiency, we consider a massless field in $2+1$ dimensions. We show how to implement precise and unambiguous renormalization conditions in the presence of a deficit angle, and make use of Kontorovich-Lebedev techniques to rewrite the sum over angular momentum channels as an integral on the imaginary axis.

Covariant Quantization of the Green-Schwarz Superstring in a Calabi-Yau Background

Abstract:After adding a scalar chiral boson to the usual superspace variables, the four-dimensional Green-Schwarz superstring is quantized in a manifestly SO(3,1) super-Poincaré covariant manner. The constraints are all first-class and form an N=2 superconformal algebra with $c=-3$. Since the Calabi-Yau degrees of freedom are described by an N=2 superconformal field theory with $c=9$, the combined Green-Schwarz and Calabi-Yau systems form the $c=6$ matter sector of a critical N=2 string. Using the standard N=2 super-Virasoro ghosts, a nilpotent BRST charge is defined and vertex operators for the massless supermultiplets are constructed. Four-dimensional superstring amplitudes can be calculated with manifest SO(3,1) super-Poincaré invariance by evaluating correlation functions of these BRST-invariant vertex operators on N=2 super-Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:A magneto-hydrodynamic model of boundary layers at the Core-Mantle Boundary (CMB) is derived and used to compute the viscous and electromagnetic torques generated by the Earth's nutation forcing. The predicted electromagnetic torque alone cannot account for the dissipation estimated from the observations of the free core nutation. The presence of a viscous boundary layer in the electromagnetic skin layer at the CMB, with its additional dissipative torques, may explain the geodetic data. An apparent Ekman number at the top of the core between 3 and $5 10^{-11}$ is inferred depending on the electrical conductivity of the mantle.

Quantized $p$-form Gauge Field in D-dimensional de Sitter Spacetime

Abstract:In this work, we utilize the dynamic invariant method to obtain a solution for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, aiming to explore the quantum theory of a $p$-form gauge field propagating in $D$-dimensional de Sitter spacetimes. Thus, we present a generalization, through the use of $p$-form gauge fields, of the quantization procedure for the scalar, electromagnetic, and Kalb-Ramond fields, all of which have been previously studied in the literature. We present an exact solution for the $p$-form gauge field when $D=2(p+1)$, and we highlight the connection of the $p=4$ case with the chiral $N=2$, $D=10$ superstring model. We could observe particle production for $D \neq 2(p+1)$ because the solutions are time-dependent. Additionally, observers in an accelerated co-moving reference frame will also experience a thermal bath. This could have significance in the realm of extra-dimensional physics and presents the intriguing prospect that precise observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background might confirm the presence of additional dimensions.

Abstract:Generically, string models with $N=1$ supersymmetry are not expected to have moduli beyond perturbation theory; stringy non-perturbative effects as well as low energy field-theoretic phenomena such as gluino condensation will lift any flat directions. In this note, we describe models where some subspace of the moduli space survives non-perturbatively. Discrete $R$ symmetries forbid any inherently stringy effects, and dynamical considerations control the field-theoretic effects. The surviving subspace is a space of high symmetry; the system is attracted to this subspace by a potential which we compute. Models of this type may be useful for considerations of duality and raise troubling cosmological questions about string theory. Our considerations also suggest a mechanism for fixing the expectation value of the dilaton.

The 't Hooft equation as a quantum spectral curve

Abstract:In an attempt to establish a link between different quantization methods, I examine the massless 't Hooft equation, which governs meson bound state wavefunctions in 2d SU(N) gauge theory in the large-N limit. The integral equation can also be obtained by lightcone quantizing a folded string in flat space. The folded string is a limiting case of a more general setup: a four-segmented string moving in AdS$_3$. I compute its classical spectral curve by using celestial variables and planar bipartite graphs (on-shell diagrams/brane tilings). The adjugate of the Kasteleyn matrix vanishes at two special points, which ensures that the string segments form a closed loop in target space. The Hamiltonian takes on a Ruijsenaars-Schneider form and the phase space is a coadjoint SL(2) orbit whose middle region has been removed. In AdS, the 't Hooft equation acquires an extra term, which has previously been proposed as an effective confining potential in QCD. After an integral transform, the equation can be inverted in terms of a finite difference equation. I show that this difference equation can be interpreted as the quantized (non-analytic) spectral curve of the string. I calculate the spectrum numerically, which interpolates between $M^2=n(n+1)$ in the tensionless limit and 't Hooft's nearly linear Regge trajectory at infinite AdS radius.

Abstract:We reexamine the massless spectrum of a heterotic string vacuum at large radius and present two results. The first result is to construct a vector bundle $\mathcal{Q}$ and operator $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$ whose kernel amounts to deformations solving `F-term' type equations. This resolves a dilemma in previous works in which the spin connection is treated as an independent degree of freedom, something that is not the case in string theory. The second result is to utilise the moduli space metric, constructed in previous work, to define an adjoint operator $\overline{\mathcal{D}}^†$. The kernel of $\overline{\mathcal{D}}^†$ amounts to deformations solving `D-term' type equations. Put together, we show there is a vector bundle $\mathcal{Q}$ with a metric, a $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$ operator and a gauge fixing (holomorphic gauge) in which the massless spectrum are harmonic representatives of $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$. This is remarkable as previous work indicated the Hodge decomposition of massless deformations were complicated and in particular not harmonic except at the standard embedding.

Abstract:The derivation of the angular spectrum of temperature perturbations of the cosmic microwave background relies on the quantization of field and metric perturbations in the inflationary phase. The quantization procedure thus deserves a close examination. As the background spacetime on which the degrees of freedom that are quantized live is curved, the methods of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes are applicable. Furthermore the dynamic system that is quantized contains a constraint, which adds an interesting problem to the quantization of the system. This article investigates the treatment of the constraints and the Weyl quantization of the system. A preferred quantization procedure is identified, which renders the field and metric perturbations non-local.

Covariant Quantization of the Partially Massless Graviton Field in de Sitter Spacetime

Abstract:We present a covariant quantization scheme for the so-called "partially massless" graviton field in de Sitter spacetime. Our approach is founded on the principles of the de Sitter group representation theory (in the sense given by Wigner), the Wightman-Gärding axioms for gauge-invariant fields (Gupta-Bleuler scheme), and the essential analyticity prerequisites in the complexified pseudo-Riemannian manifold. To implement the quantization process effectively, we adopt coordinate-independent (global) de Sitter plane waves. These plane waves, defined in the appropriate tube domains of complex de Sitter spacetime, serve as the de Sitter counterparts to the standard Minkowskian plane waves. By employing these analytical plane waves, we enable a spectral analysis of the corresponding two-point function that closely resembles the Fourier analysis typically employed in the flat Minkowskian case. Within this framework, we present the Wightman two-point function for the partially massless graviton field, which satisfies the essential criteria of locality, covariance, and normal analyticity. Furthermore, we provide insights into the underlying Hilbert space structure and the corresponding unsmeared field operator. A direct consequence of this quantization construction confirms the widely accepted notion of light-cone propagation for the de Sitter partially massless graviton field.

Abstract:Quantum de Sitter geometry is discussed using elementary field operator algebras in Krein space quantization from an observer-independent point of view, i.e., ambient space formalism. In quantum geometry, the conformal sector of the metric becomes a dynamical degree of freedom, which can be written in terms of a massless minimally coupled scalar field. The elementary fields necessary for the construction of quantum geometry are introduced and classified. A complete Krein–Fock space structure for elementary fields is presented using field operator algebras. We conclude that since quantum de Sitter geometry can be constructed by elementary fields operators, the geometry quantum state is immersed in the Krein–Fock space and evolves in it. The total number of accessible quantum states in the universe is chosen as a parameter of quantum state evolution, which has a relationship with the universe’s entropy. Inspired by the Wheeler–DeWitt constraint equation in cosmology, the evolution equation of the geometry quantum state is formulated in terms of the Lagrangian density of interaction fields in ambient space formalism.

Abstract:String theory on NS-NS AdS3 × S3 admits an exactly marginal deformation which breaks the $ {{\overline{{SL\left( {2,\mathbb{R}} \right)}}}_R} $ × SL(2, $ \mathbb{R} $) L isometry of AdS3 down to $ {{\overline{{\mathrm{SL}\left( {2,\mathbb{R}} \right)}}}_R} $ × U(1) L . The holographic dual is an exotic and only partially understood type of two-dimensional CFT with a reduced unbroken global conformal symmetry group. In this paper we study the deformed theory on the string worldsheet. It is found to be related by a spectral flow which is nonlocal in spacetime to the undeformed worldsheet theory. An exact formula for the spectrum of massive strings is presented.

Abstract:We quantize a relativistic massive complex spin-0 field and a relativistic massive spin-1/2 field on a space-time hyperboloid. We call this procedure point-form canonical quantization. Lorentz invariance of the hyperboloid implies that the 4 generators for translations become dynamic and interaction dependent, whereas the 6 generators for Lorentz transformations remain kinematic and interaction free. We expand the fields in terms of usual plane waves and prove the equivalence to equal-time quantization by representing the Poincare generators in a momentum basis. We formulate a generalized scattering theory for interacting fields by considering evolution of the system generated by the interaction dependent four-momentum operator. Finally we expand our generalized scattering operator in powers of the interaction and show its equivalence to the Dyson expansion of usual time-ordered perturbation theory.

On the perturbative formalism and a possible quantum discrete spectrum for the Regge-Wheeler equation of a de Sitter spacetime

Abstract:In this paper we study the perturbative regime in the static patch of de Sitter metric in the Regge-Wheeler formalism. After realizing that perturbative regime in a de Sitter spacetime depicted in terms of usual spherical coordinates cannot be extended up to the cosmological horizon, we study perturbative equations, in particular the axial ones, in terms of the tortoise coordinate $r_*$. We show that perturbative regime can be extended up to the cosmological horizon, provided that suitable boundary conditions are chosen. As an application, we explore the Regge-Wheeler equation at short distances by performing a taylor expansion. In order to study some possible quantum effects at short distances, we impose to the equation so obtained the same boundary conditions suitable for a quantum 3D harmonic oscillator. As a result, a discrete spectrum can be obtained. The aforementioned spectrum is analysed and a relation with possible effects denoting quantum behavior of gravitons is suggested.

Abstract:We review that in perturbative string theory, flat, homogeneous and isotropic cosmological evolutions found in no-scale models at the quantum level can enter into "quantum no-scale regimes" (QNSRs). When this is the case, the quantum effective potential is dominated by the classical kinetic energies of the no-scale modulus, dilaton and moduli not involved in the supersymmetry breaking. As a result, the evolutions approach the classical ones, where the no-scale structure is exact. When the 1-loop potential is positive, a global attractor mechanism forces the initially expanding solutions to enter the QNSR describing a flat, ever-expanding universe. On the contrary, when the potential can reach negative values, the internal moduli induce in most cases some kind of instability of the growing universe. The latter stops expanding and eventually collapses, unless the initial conditions are tuned in a tiny region of the phase space. Finally, in QNSR, no gauge instability takes place, regardless of the details of the potential.
