Abstract:Two general features of a superconductor, which appear at the critical temperature, are the formation of an energy gap and the expulsion of magnetic flux (the Meissner effect). In underdoped copper oxides, there is strong evidence that an energy gap (the pseudogap 1 ) opens up at a temperature significantly higher than the critical temperature (by 100–220 K). Certain features of the pseudogap suggest that it is closely related to the gap that appears at the critical temperature (for example, the variation of the gap magnitudes around the Fermi surface and their maximum amplitudes are very similar 2 , 3 ). However, the Meissner effect is absent in the pseudogap state. The nature of the pseudogap state, and its relation (if any) to the superconducting state are central issues in understanding copper oxide superconductivity. Recent evidence suggests that, in the underdoped regime, the Meissner state is destroyed above the critical temperature by strong phase fluctuations 1 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 (as opposed to a vanishing of the superfluid density). Here we report evidence for vortices (or vortex-like excitations) in La 2- x Sr x CuO 4 at temperatures significantly above the critical temperature. A thermal gradient is applied to the sample in a magnetic field. Vortices are detected by the large transverse electric field produced as they diffuse down the gradient (the Nernst effect). We find that the Nernst signal is anomalously enhanced at temperatures as high as 150 K.
The Crossover from Parallel Shift to Fan-Shape Broadening of the Superconducting Transition of La1.44Nd0.4Sr0.16CuO4films in Magnetic Fields

Abstract:In this paper we report the transport properties of c-axis-oriented superconducting La1.44Nd0.4Sr0.16CuO4 films on LaSrAlO4 substrates with different thicknesses in various magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the c axis of the films. It is found that with decreasing film thickness there is a crossover from the parallel shift to fan-shape broadening in the resistive transitions. Moreover, for both field configurations, the flux pinning potential U0(H) of the film shifts upward with an order of magnitude with increasing in-plane compressive strain. These results indicate that the compressive epitaxial strain and strain-induced destabilization of the static charge stripes are important aspects for the promotion of superconducting transition temperature as well as the flux pinning potential.

Abstract:By the measurement on the critical current density J c of Ca 1−x Cd x LaBaCu 3 O 7−y (x=0, 0.1) samples, it was found that, their J c (H) relations show a monotonic behavior and no fishtail effect was observed. It is suggested that this behavior results from the fact that there are few defects in these samples. From the fitting results of the J c (T) data, it was also found that the flux pinning in CaLaBaCu 3 O 7−y sample is induced by the spatial fluctuation of T c (so called ΔT c pinning), but in partial substituted sample (x=0.1), the stress-field pinning is dominant.

Abstract:We report the analysis of the magnetic fluctuations in the superconducing La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 and the related lanthanum cuprates having the different symmetry of the low temperature structure. The NMR and ESR investigations revealed the dynamical coexistence of the superconductivity and the antiferromagnetic correlations in the large part of superconductivity region of the phase diagram. We show that for all compounds, independent on their low temperature symmetry and on their superconducting properties, the enhancement of the spin stiffness near 1/8 doping takes place.

Abstract:The effects of Mn substitution for Cu on conductivity and magnetism in La1.85−xSr0.15+xCu1−xMnxO4 have been investigated by electric resistivity, dc magnetic susceptibility, and electron spin resonance measurements. Superconductivity with x up to 0.1 was observed. Variable range hoping transport due to the random potential introduced by Mn doping was suggested. Sudden decrease in resistivity for x>0.34 is related to the formation of Mn–O–Mn percolative conducting channel. The occurrence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism for x⩾0.2 is understood based on the discussion about the variation of valent state of Mn.

Abstract:The resistive transition broadening of the c-axis oriented La1.6−xNd0.4SrxCuO4 epitaxial films (x=0.1, 0.12, 0.14, and 0.16) has been systematically investigated under magnetic fields up to 14 T for both H⊥c and H‖c configurations. For H‖c, the irreversibility line corresponds to a melting line in high temperature and low field regions, whereas it shows a rapid increase following a decoupling theory in low temperature and high field regions. It is found that the in-plane resistivity ρab below the mean-field transition temperature Tc(H) follows Arrhenius-type thermally activated flux flow model ρ(T)=ρ0exp{−U0(H)[1−T∕Tc(H)]n∕kBT}, where n=3 for H‖c and n=1.5 for H⊥c. For H‖c, the field dependence of activation energy follows a power law, i.e., U0(H)∝H−α(α∼1), which can be interpreted in terms of thermal depinning of vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional superconductor. For H⊥c, a logarithmic dependence of activation energy is observed, which results from the plastic creep of flux lines associated with the intrinsic pinning in layered high-Tc superconductors.

Abstract:The structural, magnetic and transport properties of EuSr2Ru1-xNbxCu2O8 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5) samples have been investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetization and resistance measurements. We suggest that the decrease of the superconducting critical temperature Tc due to the partial substitution of Nb for Ru originates from the decrease of the carrier concentration in the CuO2 plane because of Nb existing always in the Nb5+ valence state while Ru is in a mixed valence state between Ru4+ and Ru5+. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity is also discussed.

Abstract:The field and temperature dependencies of the spin structures in the normal states of La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) (x = 0.10, 0.12, and 0.15) single crystals have been studied by measuring the magnetoresistance and susceptibility. A negative magnetoresistance appears just below the spin-ordering temperature for the magnetic fields parallel to the CuO(2) plane, which can be attributed to the spin-flop transition of the special spin structure in the normal state of the system. The anisotropic variations of susceptibilities with temperature for all the three specimens can be described in the framework of the crystal-field theory. The well fitted broad peaks of the in-plane susceptibilities χ(ab) for the specimens suggest that the susceptibilities are dominated by Nd(3+), and thus the spin reorientation of Cu(2+) in the CuO(2) plane can not be observed from the study of the susceptibility.

Abstract:Superconducting fluctuations were studied through angular-dependent torque measurements on a series of Bi2Sr2-x LaxCuO6+delta (BSLCO) single crystals. Two distinct superconducting fluctuation diamagnetisms were observed: one is the superconducting thermal fluctuation, with a boundary close to the superconducting phase boundary, while the other one, up to a temperature as high as about 180 K, showing maximum signal in the sample with hole carrier density p = 0.125, could be due to preformed pairs. In addition, we observed linearly temperature-dependent paramagnetic torque signals in BSLCO samples, possibly a result of quantum criticality from a quantum critical point at the optimal doping.

Abstract:The transport properties of the c-axis-oriented La1.44Nd0.4Sr0.16CuO4/LaSrAlO4 (LNSCO/LSAO) films with different thickness are measured in the magnetic fields both parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis. From the analysis of the superconducting transitions, resistive upper critical fields Hc2(T), irreversibility lines and flux pinning potentials U0(H) in these films, we find a crossover from parallel shift to fan-shape broadening in the resistive transition and an order of magnitude increasing in the U0(H) as the film thickness decreases. It is suggested that these results are closely related to the tuning of superconductivity and the charge-stripe order in LNSCO system by the epitaxial strain.
Study on the Normal-State Transport Properties of La 1.6 − X Nd 0.4 Sr X CuO 4 Films

Abstract:The normal-state transport properties of La1.6 − xNd0.4SrxCuO4 films (x = 0.08, 0.1, 0.12, 0.14, 0.16) have been discussed with a one-dimensional transport model proposed by Moshchalkov et al. The linear-T dependent resistivity ρab in the high-temperature regime is dominated by the charge diffusion in two dimensions, while the superlinear behavior of ρab upon cooling results from one-dimensional charge transport. With further decreasing temperature, a low-temperature logarithmic behavior is observed from underdoped to optimally doped samples. The mechanism of the localization is ascribed to the freezing of charges into the stripes. We emphasize that the pseudogap can be well understood within the charge stripe scenario.

Abstract:We present time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of La2-xBaxCuO4 (LBCO) with 0 <= x <= 0.095 and La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) with x = 0.08 and 0.11. This range of dopings spans much of the phase diagram relevant to high-temperature cuprate superconductivity, ranging from insulating, three-dimensional commensurate long-range antiferromagnetic order, for x <= 0.02, to two-dimensional (2D) incommensurate antiferromagnetism coexisting with superconductivity for x >= 0.05. Previous work on lightly doped LBCO with x = 0.035 showed a clear enhancement of the inelastic scattering coincident with the low-energy crossings of the highly dispersive spin excitations and quasi-2D optic phonons. The present work extends these measurements across the phase diagram and shows this enhancement to be a common feature to this family of layered quantum magnets. Furthermore, we show that the low-temperature, low-energy magnetic spectral weight is substantially larger for samples with nonsuperconducting ground states relative to any of the samples with superconducting ground states. Spin gaps, suppression of low-energy magnetic spectral weight as a function of decreasing temperature, are observed in both superconducting LBCO and LSCO samples, consistent with previous observations for superconducting LSCO.

Dynamic Parallel Spin Stripes from the 1/8 anomaly to the End of Superconductivity in La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

Abstract:We have carried out new neutron spectroscopic measurements on single crystals of La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ from 0.12 to 0.26 using time-of-flight techniques. These measurements allow us to follow the evolution of parallel spin stripe fluctuations with energies less than 33 meV, from x=0.12 to 0.26. Samples at these hole-doping levels are known to display static (on the neutron scattering time scale) parallel spin stripes at low temperature, with onset temperatures and intensities which decrease rapidly with increasing x. Nonetheless, we report remarkably similar dynamic spectral weight for the corresponding dynamic parallel spin stripes, between 5 meV to 33 meV, from the 1/8 anomaly near x=0.12, to optimal doping near x=0.19 to the quantum critical point for the pseudogap phase near x=0.24, and finally to the approximate end of superconductivity near x=0.26. This observed dynamic magnetic spectral weight is structured in energy with a peak near 17 meV at all dopings studied. Earlier neutron and resonant x-ray scattering measurements on related cuprate superconductors have reported both a disappearance with increasing doping of magnetic fluctuations at ($\pi$, $\pi$) wavevectors characterizing parallel spin stripe structures, and persistant paramagnon scattering away from this wavevector, respectively. Our new results on La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ from 0.12 < x <0.26 clearly show persistent parallel spin stripe fluctuations at and around at ($\pi$, $\pi$), and across the full range of doping studied. These results are also compared to recent theory. Together with a rapidly declining x-dependence to the static parallel spin stripe order, the persistent parallel spin stripe fluctuations show a remarkable similarity to the expectations of a quantum spin glass, random t-J model, recently introduced to describe strong local correlations in cuprates.

Abstract:We measured the resistivity of several c-axis-oriented YBCO films under the magnetic fields, the temperature ranged up to ln(Tc/T) = 0.68 and magnetic field up to 7 T. By fitting the data to the Aslamazov-Larkin (A-L) and Maki-Thompson (M-T) terms of the fluctuation contribution, we got reasonable parameters' value in the theory. By measuring the magnetoresistivity up to 164 K we didn't find any proof of any rising trend with temperature's increasing of the fluctuating resistivity.
Magnetic-field-induced Stripe Order and Two-Dimensional Superconductivity in a High-Tc Superconductor

Abstract:We present an experimental study of the anisotropic resistivity of superconducting La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=0.095 and transition temperature Tc=32 K. In a magnetic field perpendicular to the CuO(2) layers, H(perp), we observe that the resistivity perpendicular to the layers, \rho(perp), becomes finite at a temperature consistent with previous studies on very similar materials; however, the onset of finite parallel resistivity, \rho(par), occurs at a much higher temperature. This behavior contradicts conventional theory, which predicts that \rho(perp) and \rho(par) should become finite at the same temperature. Voltage vs. current measurements near the threshold of voltage detectability indicate linear behavior perpendicular to the layers, becoming nonlinear at higher currents, while the behavior is nonlinear from the onset parallel to the layers. These results, in the presence of moderate H(perp), appear consistent with superconducting order parallel to the layers with voltage fluctuations between the layers due to thermal noise. In search of uncommon effects that might help to explain this behavior, we have performed diffraction measurements that provide evidence for H(perp)-induced charge and spin stripe order. The field-induced decoupling of superconducting layers is similar to the decoupled phase observed previously in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=1/8 in zero field.

Abstract:In this paper, the substitution effect of Sr for La in three non-superconducting system La2−xSrxCu0.94M0.06O4 (M=Fe, Co and Ni) have been systematically studied. As the concentration of Sr increases to around 0.20, the superconductivity is recovered. The peak at 695cm−1 in the infrared spectra which is assigned to the stretching mode of oxygen atoms in plane induced by M3+ doping is suppressed by Sr increasing, demonstrating that the holes introduced by the Sr substitution have been injected into the CuO2 plane and compensate the localized electrons. These results suggest that the superconductivity recurrence is caused by the carrier compensation. The main origin of superconductivity suppression by the magnetic ions Fe/Co/Ni is the carrier localization effect.

Abstract:The infrared (IR) transmission, Raman Scattering, magnetic measurement, and electronic resistance measurement have been carried out in La2−xSrxCu0.94Mn0.06O4 and La2−xSrxCu0.94Ru0.06O4 systems. The superconductivity that is suppressed by impurity reappears as Sr content increases and forms a new relationship of the Meissner volume and Tconset versus Sr doping content. The Mn4+ doping system exhibits twice superconductive phase transitions while Ru4+ doping system exhibits only one superconductive phase transition. Coexistence and competition between superconductivity and magnetism are observed. We suggest that these surprising phenomena should be attributed to the compensation effect that is the electrons on high valence impurities are compensated by holes introduced through Sr doping. This compensation effect is confirmed by our IR spectra results. We also find that the compensation effect is strong for the localized 3d electrons of Mn4+ while very weak for the itinerant 4d electrons of Ru4+.
