Abstract:Objective To study the impact of heat sink effect on radiofrequency(RF)ablation lesions with tissue-mimicking phantom. Methods A tubing system of mimics human body was established in tissue-mimicking phantom.During RF ablation, cooling liquids maintained at either 10 ℃ or 37 ℃ were drained into the tube, and thermodetector needles were placed on both sides of the RF electrode. The temperature values in the temperature field of the ablation lesions were recorded by thermodetectors. Results The temperature value of thermodetector needles increased after starting the ablation. Two minutes after the RF electrode reached the preset ablation temperature, the temperature values remained fairly constant until the completion of the ablation. The needles were arranged in symmetric positions, such as No.2 and No.3 needles,No.1 and No.4 needles, which were affected by the drainage of cooling liquid, had a 5 ℃ to 10 ℃ difference in temperatures. The No.1 needles, which were used in both drainage cooling liquid groups, had a measurement lower than 45 ℃.While the No.1 and No.2 needles in the 10 ℃ group had a measurement lower than those observed in the 37℃ group. Conclusion The cooling liquid flowing through the simulated tube proximal to the ablation lesions showed significant heat sink effects during RF ablation, which had significant impacts on the size of the ablation lesions as well as its temperature field.
