Abstract:Viburnum species are a group of small trees or shrubs that are of great ornamental and medicinal values. Some of them have been used for a long time both as conventional and ethnic medicine. Viburnum fruits, eaten in fresh and processed forms, have been revealed to contain various health-promoting nutrients. With the increasing research on Viburnum plants, they are considered to be an abundant resource of bioactive natural products possessing diverse pharmacological properties and unique chemical structures, that is powerfully proved by the existence of structurally novel vibsane-type diterpenoids which only occur in Viburnum species, newly discovered lignan constituents with unusual side chains and other noteworthy natural components. This review describes 185 new and 228 known secondary metabolites from Viburnum genus between 2008 and 2020, including their chemical structures, sources and bioactivities, and highlights the corresponding structure-activity relationships.

Abstract:A new monoterpene glycoside, vervenone-10-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1''→6′)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), along with ten known ones, vervenone-10-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), paeoniflorin (3), benzoylpaeoniflorin (4), alibiflorin (5), benzoylalbiflorin (6), 4-O-galloylalbiflorin (7), 6′-O-galloylalbiflorin (8), galloylpaeoniflorin (9), oxypaeoniflorin (10) and lactiflorin (11) were isolated from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. The chemical structure of compound 1 was determined by extensive analysis of its NMR (1D and 2D) and HR-ESI-MS spectroscopic data. The chemotaxonomic significance of the isolated compounds was discussed.

Abstract:The volatile oil from Vaccinium bracteatum Thumb.leaves was analyzed by GC-MS.65 peaks were separated and 49 compounds were identified,which represented about 91.94 % of the total content.The main chemical constituents were terpenes 54.75 %,open chain alkanes 6.93 %,cycloparaffins 20.13 %,olefins 0.60 %,aromatics 1.60 %,phenol,ether and alcohol 3.39 %,aldehyde and ketone 2.14 %,ester 1.15 %,heterocyclic compounds 0.47 % and amines 0.78 %.Nerolidol 20.01 %,(Z,Z,Z)-1,5,9,9-tetramethyl-1,4,7-cycloundecatriene 17.99 % and caryophyllene 9.59 % were the main components in the identified terpenes.12 kinds of industrial production flavors were found from volatile oil in Vaccinium bracteatum leaves,and five components have insecticide and antibacterial activity.

Abstract:Thirteen compounds including four terpenes ( 1 – 4 ), six aromatic compounds ( 5 – 10 ), and three flavonoids ( 11 – 13 ) were isolated from Viburnum chingii . The structures of these compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods and comparison with literature data. Among them, 1 – 11 and 13 were isolated from Adoxaceae family for the first time. A network of compounds-families was built, and the chemotaxonomic relevance of these compounds was discussed. The results showed that the Rosaceae and Asteraceae had a close relationship with Adoxaceae family. The research clarified the chemotaxonomic significance, and it accordingly contributed to further knowledge of the chemical diversity of Adoxaceae family.

Abstract:A chemical investigation of leaves of Viburnum chingii afforded eleven compounds, including one undescribed lignan ( 1 ), a pair of known phenylpropanoid enantiomers ( 2a / 2b ), and eight known lignans ( 3 - 10 ). Their structures were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic and comparative literature data analysis. The absolute configurations of compounds 1 was determined by comparing the experimental ECD data with the calculated values. The compounds 2a / 2b were separated successfully by a chiral chromatographic column. In addition, the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities of described compounds were evaluated.

Abstract:Phytochemical investigation on the stems of Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br. led to the isolation and identification of 30 natural products, including sixteen alkaloids (1–16), nine triterpenoids (17–25), two phenols (26–27), and three lignans (28–30). Their structures were established by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses together with the comparison with reported data. Compound 1 was a new indole alkaloid. Compound 24 was firstly isolated from Apocynaceae family, compounds 22–23 and 26–30 were obtained from the genus Alstonia for the first time, and this is the first report of the presence of 11 and 16 in A. scholaris. The chemotaxonomic significance of these isolated compounds was also discussed.

Abstract:Seven new vibsane-type diterpenes, vibsanols C–H (1–6) and vibsanin X (7), together with seven analogues, were isolated from the leaves and twigs of Viburnum odoratissimum. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods. All the new compounds were detected for their cytotoxicity. Compound 1 showed significant cytotoxicity against all the tested cell lines (HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-594, MCF-7, and SW-480), with IC50 values of 3.35, 4.41, 5.18, 11.30, and 3.70μM, respectively. Compounds 4 and 5 also displayed significant cytotoxicity against hepatocellular carcinoma SMMC-7721 cell line, with IC50 values of 3.69 and 3.52μM, respectively.

Abstract:Chemical investigation of the fruits of Viburnum dilatatum THUNB. resulted in the isolation and characterization of four new phenolic glycosides, jiamiziosides A-D (1-4), together with five known compounds. Their structures were established by spectroscopic means and by comparison with the literature values. The antioxidant activities of the new isolates were determined against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (=2,2-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)hydrazinyl; DPPH) and superoxide radicals. Among the compounds tested, jiamizioside C (3) possesses the most potent inhibitory scavenging effect on DPPH and superoxide radicals with IC50 values of 16.8 and 17.8 mu m, respectively.

Abstract:Seven new diterpenoids (1–7), including five 7-membered ring vibsane-type diterpenoids, vibsanolide A-E (1–5) and a pair of epimers of 14,15,16,17-tetranorvibsane-type diterpenoids possessing bicyclo[4.2.1]nonane moiety, vibsanolide F-G (6–7), together with twelve known analogues (8–19) were isolated from the crude extracts of the leaves of Viburnum odoratissimum using Small Molecule Accurate Recognition Technology (SMART). These structures including absolute configurations were elucidated by means of comprehensive analyses of spectroscopic data, as well as comparison of the experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. These compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against A549 and HepG2 cells by MTT assay. The results showed that compound 2 exhibited potent cytotoxic activity against A549 cells with IC50 value of 1.11 μM. Further staining experiments indicated that 2 could promote apoptosis induction, enhance reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and attenuate mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) in A549 cells. Taken together, these findings provided new insights into understanding the cytotoxic activity of vibsane-type diterpenoids and it is meaningful to further investigate the application potential of V. odoratissimum.

Abstract:To investigate the chemical compounds from the rhizome of Stellera chamaejasme, nine lignans, including stellerachamin A (1), 8-hydroxypluviatolide (2), wikstromol (3), pinoresinol (4), matairesinol (5), dextrobursehernin (6), hinokinin(7), (-)-glaberide I (8) and （-） medioresinol (9) were isolated by various chromatographic methods. Their structures were extensively determined on basis of MS and NMR spectroscopic data analysis. Among them, compound 1 was a new lignan, and compounds 2 and 7 were isolated from Thymelaeaceae for the first time.

Abstract:The phytochemical investigation of the stem barks of Voacanga africana resulted in the isolation of fifteen known monoterpenoid indole alkaloids ( 1 – 15 ). The structures of the alkaloids were determined by comparison of their physical and spectroscopic data with those reported in literature. Twelve of these metabolites ( 4 – 15 ) were previously unreported within the genus Voacanga , thus they can serve as chemotaxonomic markers for V. africana to differentiate between V. africana from other species of the genus Voacanga . The alkaloids 3-oxoconopharyngine ( 6 ), ervahainanmine ( 10 ), crassanine ( 14 ) and conolobine A ( 15 ) hold the potential to serve as chemical markers for distinguishing V. africana from other family species. Furthermore, compounds 3 , 6 , 10 , 12 showed potential antimicrobial activities against Candida albicans and Bacillus subtilis with MIC values of 6.25–12.50 μg/mL.

Abstract:Vachellia gummifera (Willd.) Kyal. & Boatwr. is a medicinal plant endemic to Morocco that has no documented studies on its chemical composition. In this study, the chemical composition of the water/methanol (4:1) extracts of air‐dried leaf and stem samples of Moroccan V. gummifera was determined using UHPLC‐MS and NMR. In total, over 100 metabolites were identified in our study. Pinitol was the major compound in both the leaf and stem extracts, being significantly more abundant in the former. Asparagine and 3‐hydroxyheteroendrin were the second most abundant compounds in the stem and leaf extracts, respectively, though both compounds were present in each tissue. The other compounds included flavonoids based on quercetin, and phenolic derivatives. Eucomic acid, only identified in the stems and was the major aromatic compound distinguishing the leaf and stem profiles. Quercetin 3‐O‐(6′′‐O‐malonyl)‐β‐D‐glucopyranoside was identified as the major flavonoid in the leaves but was also present in the stems. Other malonylated derivatives that were all flavonol glycosides based on myricetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin in addition to quercetin were also identified. This is the first report of eucomic acid and malonylated compounds in Vachellia species. This report provides valuable insights into the chemotaxonomic significance of the Vachellia genus.

Abstract:The genus Viburnum (Adoxaceae, Dipsacales) is of scientific interest due to the chemical components and diverse biological activities found across species of the genus, which includes more than 230 species of evergreen, semievergreen, or deciduous shrubs and small trees. Although frequently used as an ornament, the Viburnum species show biological properties with health-promoting effects. Fruits, flowers, and barks of certain species are used for pharmaceutical purposes or as cooking ingredients, hence containing biochemical compounds with health-promoting activity such are carotenoids, polyphenols, and flavonoids. However, its taxonomical determination is difficult, due to its wide distribution and frequent hybridizations; therefore, an objective classification would allow us to understand its biological activity based on its phytochemical components. More than sixty phytochemical compounds have been reported, where vibsanin-type diterpenes and their derivatives are the most prevalent. Leaves and twigs of V. dilatatum contain the largest number of phytochemicals among the genus. Through preclinical evidence, this study provides insight regarding antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and anticancer activities of genus Viburnum.

Abstract:A phytochemical study of Cortex Moutan (the dried root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews) led to the isolation of 24 compounds, including eleven mono-phenols ( 1 – 11 ), seven terpenoids ( 12 – 18 ), three flavonoids ( 19–21 ), two sterols ( 22 and 23 ) and one coumarin ( 24 ). The structures of these isolated compounds were identified using NMR spectroscopy ( 1 H and 13 C) by comparison with previously reported data. To the best of our knowledge, compounds 5 , 11 , 15 , 16 , 22 , and 24 were reported from this plant for the first time. The chemotaxonomic significance of the isolates was also discussed.

Abstract:AIM:To study the chemical constituents of the root of Stellera chamaejasme L.METHODS:Various column chromatographies on silica gel and RP-18 were employed for isolation and purification. Structures of compounds were elucidated by spectral analysis.RESULTS:Eight lignans and three biflavonoids possessing a C-3/C-3" linkage were isolated. They are ruixianglangdusu A (1) and B (2), 4',4'",5,5",7,7"-hexahydroxy-3,3"-biflavone (3), (+)-kusunokinin (4), lirioresinol-B (5), magnolenin C (6), (-)-pinoresinol monomethyl ether (7), (-)-pinoresinol (8), (+)-matairesinol (9), isohinokinin (10) and (-)-eudesmin (11).CONCLUSION:Compounds 1 and 2 are new biflavanones, 1 is enantiomeric to known chamaejasmenin C, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11 were isolated from this plant for the first time, and 7 was isolated from natural resources for the first time. In vitro bioassays showed that 3 and 8 exhibited antibacterial activity, and 1, 2, 9 and 11 exhibited immunomodulatory activity.
