Abstract:The pore sizes of SBA-15 and SBA-16 are controlled well by the direct micelle control method, which is related with assembled conditions of the solution temperature and concentration of the triblock copolymer. The relation between the pore size of the mesoporous silicate and the assembled conditions is the same as that one among the core radius of the micelle triblock copolymer, the solution temperature T and the critical micellization temperature Tc in ∼(T−Tc)0.2.

Abstract:The pore size control of SBA-15 and SBA-16, which are synthesized by poly (ethylene oxide)- poly (propylene oxide)- poly (ethylene oxide) type triblock copolymer as structure directing agent, are carried out by modifying the micelle of triblock copolymer in solution on the temperature of it. The micelle core radius of this kind of triblock copolymer, which depend on the temperature, could be systematically changed according to the relation similar to (T T-c)(0.2), where T-c is the critical micellization temperature of a concentration triblock copolymer in solution. We apply this relation to a synthesis process and first reveal that the relationship between pore size R-p of SBA-15 and the solution temperature is as same as that one between the core radius of the micelle of P123 and the solution temperature in similar to (T-T-c)(0.2).

Abstract:TiO2 thin films with a hexagonal mesoporous structure and an anatase-type crystalline framework are easily synthesized by a sol–gel method at low pH, using an EO–PO–EO block copolymer as template. While the TiO2/polymer superstructure originally has a primitive cubic structure, annealing at 150 °C affords a phase transition to hexagonal (see Figure), which persists upon template removal by calcination.

Abstract:Self-assembled mesoporous TiO2 thin films have been synthesized by sol-gel method using amphiphilic triblock copolymer as a template under acidic conditions. The samples were characterized by small angle X-ray diffractometry (SAXRD), thermogravimetry–differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2 adsorption and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The structural characteristic of mesoporous TiO2 thin films strongly depends on the pH values of precursor solution, heat treatment conditions, and the condensation of templates. It has been proven that the framework of obtained films consisted of TiO2 nanocrystallites.

Abstract:Large-area mesoporous silicate thin films are reported to be formed on solid silica substrates by the simple technique of spin-coating. The mesophase of the films can be controlled to be one-dimensional hexagonal, cubic, or lamellar by adjusting the casting solution composition, i.e., mainly the ratio of surfactant to tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The X-ray diffraction results leading to the assignment of the mesophase types are presented and reasons for the change of phase with solution composition discussed. The films are expected to have applications in catalysis, molecular separation, and sensors.

Abstract:Triblock copolymer templated synthesis of titania films in water (without ethanol) was demonstrated, which led to the formation of emulsions in the aqueous precursor solutions by adding hydrophobic 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene (TIPBz). A cubic Im-3m mesoporous anatase film containing emulsion-induced macropores was prepared by spin-coating of an aqueous precursor solution of water-soluble triblock copolymer such as Pluronic F127 through the evaporation-induced self-assembly approach. The addition of TIPBz in the aqueous system also affords pinhole-like macrospaces in the mesostructured film. Expansion of the pinhole-like macrospaces during calcination would offset a tensile stress through shrinkage with the retention of the mesostructure, leading to complete crystallization of the titania framework that is important for effective adsorption of DNA molecules.

Abstract:We have fabricated a mesoporous copolymer thin film whose surface pore size can be varied from submicrometer to micrometer. Our fabrication method requires microphase separation induced by a silicone surfactant during the rapid solvent evaporation and polymerizations. The sample films were characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM), confocal Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in situ infrared (IR), attenuated total reflection (ATR), and other techniques. The characterization results show that the pore size can be controlled by altering the concentration of silicone surfactant. Furthermore, the mesoporous copolymer film with hydrophobic convex and hydrophilic concave structure exhibits both hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The unique properties can be attributed to the special heterogeneous porous structure of the polymer film. The resulting porous polymer films can be utilized in many fields, such as self-cleaning, antiadhesives, adsorption, and separation. These mesoscale-patterned surfaces can also provide a model system for investigating the interface properties of actual surfaces.

Abstract:Mixtures of triblock copolymer EO20PO70EO 20 and cationic surfactant CTAB have been used as mixed templates for the synthesis of mesoporous silica with tailored pore structures and exterior morphologies. Compared with the mesoporous silica obtained by using single copolymer template, the pore structure of the mesoporous silica obtained by using the mixed templates is less ordered and its pore size decreases with decreasing weight fraction of the copolymer in the mixed templates under the studied conditions. Micrometer-sized mesoporous silica spheres (1.5-4 μm) with smooth surfaces, which have an average pore size of 3.2 nm and a BET surface area of 972 m2/g, can be prepared at 1:1 weight ratio between EO20PO70EO20 and CTAB.

Abstract:Several well defined block copolymers PEO-b-PS and PS-b-PEO-b-PS were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization using PEO-Br and Br-PEO-Br as macroinitiators. These copolymers were characterized by GPC and 1H NMR. Mesoporous silicas with large and tunable accessible pores were successfully synthesized by evaporation-induced self-assembly using block copolymers as templates. The structures of these materials were characterized by BET and TEM. When block copolymers possess similar hydrophobic block length but different block architecture, the pore size of mesoporous silica templated by triblock copolymers is larger than that templated by diblock copolymers. For diblock copolymers, with the increasing of PEO block, the mesoporous size decreases; and with the increasing of PS block, the mesoporous size increases. The increase in the degree of polymerization of the PS block leads to a loss of pore organization. When PS block reaches long enough, the product was not mesoporous silica but silica nanowire. In addition, a method of a preparation of block copolymers vesicles by EISA approach was accidentally found.

Abstract:Use of amphiphilic triblock copolymers to direct the organization of polymerizing silica species has resulted in the preparation of well-ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica structures (SBA-15) with uniform pore sizes up to approximately 300 angstroms. The SBA-15 materials are synthesized in acidic media to produce highly ordered, two-dimensional hexagonal (space group p6mm) silica-block copolymer mesophases. Calcination at 500 degrees C gives porous structures with unusually large interlattice d spacings of 74.5 to 320 angstroms between the (100) planes, pore sizes from 46 to 300 angstroms, pore volume fractions up to 0.85, and silica wall thicknesses of 31 to 64 angstroms. SBA-15 can be readily prepared over a wide range of uniform pore sizes and pore wall thicknesses at low temperature (35 degrees to 80 degrees C), using a variety of poly(alkylene oxide) triblock copolymers and by the addition of cosolvent organic molecules. The block copolymer species can be recovered for reuse by solvent extraction with ethanol or removed by heating at 140 degrees C for 3 hours, in both cases, yielding a product that is thermally stable in boiling water.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica materials (SBA-family) with 2-D hexagonal (p6mm) and 3-D cubic (Im3m) symmetry have been efficiently synthesized by using the mixture of triblock copolymer surfactant and sodium dodecylsulfonate as co-templates at relatively low concentration. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms are used to characterize these mesoporous silica materials, and the results show that the mesoporous silica mateials synthesized from the mixed surfactants have better mesostructural order and smaller mesopore size, compared with mesoporous silica materials of SBA-15 and SBA-16. Moreover, the microporosity in these ordered mesoporous materials is well controlled by the weight ratios of polymer surfactant to anionic surfactant. Particularly, when P123 concentration in the starting gel is reduced to less than 0.4wt.%, the walls of ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica are micropore-free.

Abstract:A simple, reproducible, and versatile procedure for synthesizing mesostructured 12-phosphotungstic acid thin films with large spaced mesostructures (<17 nm) using amphiphilic block copolymers as structure-directing agents is reported. The morphology of the mesostructure can be controlled by adjusting the m/n ratio of poly (ethylene oxide)1/2/poly (propylene oxide) (EO1/2/PO) in the tri-block copolymer (EO)m(PO)n(EO)m. This synthetic approach was adapted to prepare mesoscopically ordered heteropoly oxometalates (HPOMs) films, including 12-phosphomolybdic acid and 12-tungsto (IV) silicic acid. The electrochemical properties of the calcined HPOMs films as electrodes in Li-ion batteries were also investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a successful synthesis of highly ordered mesoporous carbons with large pores and tunable pore walls by using a home-designed ABC amphiphilic triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PMMA-b-PS) with gradient hydrophilicity as a template and resol as a carbon source via the solvent evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) strategy. SAXS, TEM, HRSEM, and N-2 sorption characterizations show that the obtained carbon products possess ordered face-centered cubic (fcc) close-packed (Fm (3) over barm) mesostructure with large pores of about 20.0 nm. By simply adjusting the resol/template ratios, the wall thickness of products can easily be tuned in the range of 10-19 nm. For the first time, we observed numerous large micro/mesopores in the carbon pore walls, originating from the removal of PMMA segment during the pyrolysis. The obtained mesoporous carbons have an extra-large lattice constant of up to 55.0 nm, high surface areas of similar to 900 m(2)/g, and pore volume of similar to 0.6 cm(3)/g, as well as high stability even in concentrated KOH solution. The gradient hydrophilicity of the ABC triblock copolymer template facilitates the continuous invasion of resol precursor molecules along the PEO to PMMA segments of the spherical PEO-PMMA-PS micelles, tuning the pore wall thickness. The rationally designed ABC-type triblock copolymers make it possible to synthesize ordered mesoporous carbons with ultrathick pore walls as well its excellent chemical and thermal stability.

Abstract:Highly ordered ethylene bridged periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) materials with ultra-large pore sizes up to 14.7 nm were successfully synthesized by using triblock copolymer F127 as a template and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) as a swelling agent. SAXS and TEM measurements show that PMO products have a face-centered cubic (space group of Fm (3) over barm) mesostructure. The influence of reaction temperature and acidity of the solution on the mesostructure of the PMO products were systematically studied. The pore size can be gradually expanded as the temperature decreases, and ordered PMOs can be obtained at a temperature even down to 5 degrees C with a relatively low acidity. As compared with mesoporous silica materials synthesized at identical conditions, our experimental results reveal that different hydrophobicity between precursors, bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane and tetraethyl orthosilicate, may influence the swelling capacity of F127 micelles with TMB as well as the phase behavior of triblock copolymer F127, resulting in the different physicochemical properties of the final products.

Abstract:A simple and general procedure has been developed fbr the syntheses of ordered large-pore (up to 14 nm) mesoporous metal oxides, including TiO2, ZrO2, Nb2O5, Ta2O5, Al2O3, SiO2, SnO2, WO3, HfO2, and mixed oxides SiAlOy, Al2TiOy, ZrTiOy, SiTiOy, ZrW2Oy. Amphiphilic poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymers were used as structure-directing agents in nonaqueous solutions for organizing the network-forming metal oxide species. Inorganic salts, rather than alkoxides or organic metal complexes, were used as soluble and hydrolyzable precursors to the polymerized metal oxide framework. These thermally stable mesoporous oxides have robust inorganic frameworks and thick channel walls, within which high densities of nanocrystallites can be nucleated. These novel mesoporous metal oxides are believed to be formed through a mechanism that combines block copolymer self-assembly with alkylene oxide complexation of the inorganic metal species.

Abstract:The formation of continuous mesoporous silica films with large periodic cage and pore structures is reported here. The authors use low-cost commercially available triblock copolymers and poly(ethylene oxide) non-ionic surfactants as the structure-directing agents in conjunction with dip-coat processing. Abstract:A facile approach to maintain the periodic mesostructure of cylindrical pores in polymer-resin and carbon films after thermal template removal is explored through the reactive coassembly of resol (carbon precursor) and tetraethylorthosilicate (silica precursor) with triblock copolymer Pluronic F127. Without silica, a low porosity, disordered film is formed after pyrolysis despite the presence of an ordered mesostructure prior to template removal. However for silica concentration greater than 25 wt %, pyrolysis at 350 degrees C yields a mesoporous silica-polymer film with well-defined pore mesostructure. These films remain well ordered upon carbonization at 800 degrees C. In addition to the mesostructural stability, the addition of silica to the matrix impacts other morphological characteristics. For example, the average pore size and porosity of the films increase from 3.2 to 7.5 nm and 12 to 45%, respectively, as the concentration of silica in the wall matrix increases from 0 to 32 wt %. The improved thermal stability of the ordered mesostructure with the addition of silica to the matrix is attributed to the reinforcement of the mechanical properties leading to resistance to stress induced collapse of the mesostructure during template removal.
