Abstract:There are several ways to derive Einstein's celebrated formula for the energy of a massive particle at rest, E = mc2. Noether's theorem applied to the relativistic Lagrange function provides an unambiguous and straightforward access to energy and momentum conservation laws but those tools were not available at the beginning of the twentieth century and are not at hand for newcomers even nowadays. In the so-called pedestrian approach for newcomers, we start from relativistic kinematics and analyze elastic and inelastic scattering processes in different reference frames to derive the relativistic energy-mass relation. We extend the analysis to Compton scattering between a massive particle and a photon, and a massive particle emitting two photons. Using the Doppler formula, it follows that E = ħω for photons at angular frequency ω where ħ is the reduced Planck constant. We relate our work to other derivations of Einstein's formula in the literature.

Abstract:A semi-empirical high-frequency formula is developed to efficiently and accurately compute the extinction efficiencies of spheroids in the cases of moderate and large size parameters under either fixed or random orientation condition. The formula incorporates the semi-classical scattering concepts formulated by extending the complex angular momentum approximation of the Lorenz-Mie theory to the spheroid case on the basis of the physical rationales associated with changing the particle morphology from a sphere to a spheroid. The asymptotic edge-effect expansion is truncated with an optimal number of terms based on a priori knowledge obtained from comparing the semi-classical Mie extinction efficiencies with the Lorenz-Mie solutions. The present formula is fully tested in comparison with the T-matrix results for spheroids with the aspect ratios from 0.5 to 2.0, and for various refractive indices m(r) + im(i), with m(r) from 1.0 to 2.0 and m(i) from 0 to 0.5.
Fundamental Solutions for Transversely Isotropic Magneto-Electro-elastic Media and Boundary Integral Formulation

Abstract:To obtain the fundamental solutions for computation of magneto-electro-elastic media by the boundary element method, the general solutions in the case of distinct eigenvalues are derived and expressed in five harmonic functions from the governing equations and the strict differential operator theorem. On the basis of these general solutions, the fundamental solution of infinite magneto-electro-elastic solid are obtained with the method of trial-and-error. Finally, the boundary integral formulation is derived and the corresponding boundary element method program is implemented to perform two numerical calculations (a column under uni-axial tension, uniform electric displacement or uniform magnetic induction, an annular plate simply-supported on outer and inner surfaces under axial loads). The numerical results agree well with the analytical ones.

AN ANALYTIC DERIVATION FOR THE MCMILLAN Tc FORMULA (Ⅲ)

Abstract:The Tc formula obtained in the previous two papers of this series is generalized to the following form: Tc=αωlog(ωlog/ωc)(μ*/(λ-μ*))exp{-(1+λ)/(λ-μ*)}, and a set of equations to be used to calculate the function a, is derived from the linear Eliashberg equation. a is a function of λ and μ* in general. In the weak coupling limit, we obtain a = 2γ/π from the set of equations mentioned above, where Inγ = C = 0.5772 is the Euler constant. Hence the Tc formula obtained in the two previous papers is correct in the same limit. We further calculate numerically the value of a when λ=0.23, 0.25, 0.38 and 0.48 from the set of equations mentioned above for the case of the Einstein spectrum and μ*= 0. Our results show that at least, in the interval 0.23 ≤λ≤ 0.48, a is vary small and equal to 1/1.30 approximately. With this value of a, the Tc formula obtained by us reduce practically to the empirical McMillan Tc formula in the version proposed by Allen and Dynes.

Abstract:In the case of μ* = 0, the following Tc formula is derived analytically from the Eliashberg equation Tc=αωlogexp{-b((1+cλ)/λ)}, where, α = 2γ/π, b = c =1 and In γ = C = 0.5772 which is the Euler constant.The formula obtained by the authors holds only when Tc is less than 0.36/ α (K), where a is a constant larger than 1 and differs from one material to another. We conjecture, it is very likely that, when Tc is larger than 0.36/a, the functional structure of the Tc formula differs from that of McMillan's or at least the parameters a, b, and c are no longer constants independent of materials.

Abstract:Phase velocity plays a key role in wave-matter interactions where phase matching is essential. Laser acceleration of electrons is a good example. We have derived an exact formula with two deductions of the phase velocity for a monochromatic wave field in homogeneous medium from the fundamental wave equation. The core of these formulae is that the phase velocity is sufficiently determined in terms of the wave amplitude with no explicit reference to the phase. We applied these formulae to make out the phase velocity distribution of a Gaussian laser beam and compared with the traditional method.

Abstract:We show that a charged sphere moving at a constant velocity $v$ exhibits a mass due to electromagnetic radiation, expressed as $4/(3+(v/c)^2) (E/c^2)$, where $E$ is the electromagnetic energy and $c$ the speed of light in vacuum. Our finding reconciles the longstanding mismatch between the electromagnetic mass calculated from the classical electrodynamics' $4/3 (E/c^2)$ and the relativistic theory.

Transformation of mass-angular momentum aspect under BMS transformations

Abstract:In this article, we present the definitive transformation formulae of the mass aspect and angular momentum aspect under BMS transformations. Two different approaches that lead to the same formulae are taken. In the first approach, the formulae are derived by reading off the aspect functions from the curvature tensor. While in the second and more traditional approach, we read them off from the metric coefficients. As an application of the angular momentum aspect transformation formula, we directly verify a relation concerning the Dray-Streubel angular momentum. It also enables us to reinterpret our calculations in terms of differential forms on null infinity, and leads to an exact expression of the Drey-Streubel angular momentum of a general section. The formulae we obtained played crucial roles in our recent work on supertranslation invariant charges, and resolved some inconsistencies in the literature.

Abstract:A cornerstone of physics, Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism, apparently contains a fatal flaw. The standard expressions for the electromagnetic field energy and self-mass of an electron of finite extension do not obey Einstein's famous equation, $E=mc^2$, but instead fulfill this relation with a factor 4/3 on the left-hand side. Many famous physicists have contributed to the debate of this so-called 4/3-problem but without arriving at a complete solution. Here, a comprehensive solution is presented. The problem is caused by an incorrect treatment of rigid-body dynamics. Relativistic effects are important even at low velocities and equivalence between electromagnetic field energy and self-mass of the electron is restored when these effects are included properly. In a description of the translational motion of a rigid body by point-particle dynamics, its mechanical energy and momentum must be defined as a sum of the energies and momenta of its parts for fixed time, not in the laboratory as in the standard expressions but in the rest frame of the body, and for consistency of the description, the energy and momentum of the associated field must be defined in the same way.

Abstract:Thin V2O3 films were deposited on a piezoelectric substrate by electron-beam evaporation. Surface acoustic waves (SAW) were generated by interdigital-transducers (IDTs). The attenuation and sound velocity was investigated from 260K to 10K, providing an insight into the temperature dependent electrical, dielectrical and elastic properties of V2O3 at the metal to insulator transition.

Abstract:As phenomenologically reported by Young and Einstein, the two different and/or coinstantaneous propagation forms of light (wave and particle), are geometrically unclear. This problem arises because of their opposing conceptualities and strange dual characteristics. Here, we show that for electromagnetism-based physical phenomena a series of successive rotation–revolution–precession motions beginning with the translational motion of the origin energy generates both electricity and magnetism. Consequently, the regular back-and-forth vibration with phase difference originating from the inclined rotation axis simultaneously generates periodic wave oscillations as well as straight particle characteristics. Based on Einstein's E = mc2 formula, our new energy-based approach towards the dual characteristics of light is presented and validated. Therefore, the present classification of light, comprising both wave and particle natures at the micro- and macro-scales, respectively, is not directly contradictory, and the inherently dual nature of light can be easily incorporated into a single logically coherent paradigm.

Abstract:The electromagnetic fields of the hybrid modes of an optical fiber are reformulated using bi-complex mathematics, which leads to simpler expressions relative to those found using the widely used, conventional complex method. Generalized expressions for the electromagnetic fields are also found using both methods, for comparative purposes. Furthermore, the feasibility of bi-complex mathematics is investigated for the derivation of the modal powers and the orthogonality relation.

Abstract:A theoretical method with the quaternion algebra was presented to derive the mass continuity equation from the linear momentum. It predicts that the strength of electromagnetic field and the velocity have the impact on the mass continuity equation. In the gravitational field and electromagnetic field, the mass continuity equation will change with the electromagnetic field strength, gravitational field strength, linear momentum, electric current, and the speed of light. The deduction can explain why the field strength has an influence on the anomalous transport about the mass continuity equation in the plasma and electrolytes etc.

Abstract:In this article, we estimate the quasi-local energy with reference to the Minkowski spacetime [16,17], the anti-de Sitter spacetime [4], or the Schwarzschild spacetime [3]. In each case, the reference spacetime admits a conformal Killing-Yano 2-form which facilitates the application of the Minkowski formula in [15] to estimate the quasi-local energy. As a consequence of the positive mass theorems in [9,13] and the above estimate, we obtain rigidity theorems which characterize the Minkowski spacetime and the hyperbolic space.

Abstract:Generalized propagation formulas for the elements of the cross-spectral density matrix of stochastic electromagnetic beams on inverse propagation through an axially symmetrical or nonsymmetrical optical system are derived with the help of Fourier transform and inverse Fourier transform. Abstract:On the basis of the truncated second-order moments method in the cylindrical coordinate systems and the expansion of the hard-edged aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate method used to calculate the generalized beam propagation factor (M2 factor) is proposed. The approximate analytical expressions of the generalized M2 factor for rotationally symmetric hard-edged diffracted flattened Gaussian beams defined by Gori [Opt. Commun. 107, 335 (1994)] and Li [Opt. Lett. 27, 1007 (2002)] are derived, respectively; we show that it depends on the beam order N and the beam truncation parameter delta. Some typical numerical examples are given to illustrate its applications that we compare by using the obtained analytical method and the numerical integration method.
