Thyroid Function Alterations after Hemi-thyroidectomy

Abstract:Objective To investigate the incidence of hypothyroidism after hemi-thyroidectomy and the associated relevant risk factors.Methods We conducted a retrospective review of all patients undergoing hemithyroidectomy for benign diseases in 2009 by the same surgeons.Thyroid function was tested preoperatively,1 month and 3 months postoperatively.Risk factors of hypothyroidism were also analysed.Results Hypothyroidism was diagnosed in 20.6% patients(14/68) and 13.0% patients(9/68) by the end of 1 month and 3 months postoperatively,respectively.Increased ages(57.2±12.6 years vs 48.8±11.5 years,P=0.046) and higher preoperative thyrotropin levels(2.17±0.90μU/L vs 1.45±0.68μU/L,P=0.007) were more common in hypothyroidism group.There was no correlation between sex,pathology or the side of lobectomy with hypothyrodisim.Conclusion The incidence of hypothyroidism after hemithyroidectomy was 13.0%.The patients with an increased age or a relatively high preoperative TSH level need to be monitored closely.
