Abstract:This paper gives infinitely many examples of unknot diagrams that are hard, in the sense that the diagrams need to be made more complicated by Reidemeister moves before they can be simplified. In order to construct these diagrams, we prove theorems characterizing when the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles is an unknot. The key theorem shows that the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles [P/Q] and [R/S] is unknotted if and only if PS + QR has absolute value equal to 1. The paper uses these results in studying processive DNA recombination, finding minimal size unknot diagrams, generalizing to collapses to knots as well as to unknots, and in finding unknots with arbirarily high complexity. The paper is self-contained, with a review of the theory of rational tangles and a last section on relationships of the theme of the paper with other aspects of topology and number theory. The present version of the paper contains a correction to Figure 22 of the previous (and published) version, a small expansion to the section on Farey fractions, and an updated reference to the paper "Unknotting unknots" by Henrich and Kauffman.

Abstract:We say that a knot k_1 in the 3-sphere 1-dominates another k_2 if there is a proper degree 1 map E(k_1) → E(k_2) between their exteriors, and write k_1 ≥ k_2. When k_1 ≥ k_2 but k_1 k_2 we write k_1 > k_2. One expects in the latter eventuality that k_1 is more complicated. In this paper we produce various sorts of evidence to support this philosophy.

Abstract:Conjecture $\mathbb{Z}$ is a knot theoretical equivalent form of the Kervaire Conjecture. We say that a knot have property $\mathbb{Z}$ if it satisfies Conjecture $\mathbb{Z}$ for that specific knot. In this work, we show that alternating Montesinos knots with three tangles have property $\mathbb{Z}$. We also show that all the pretzel knots of the form $P(p,q,r)$ (not necessarily alternating) have property $\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:We show that every nonzero integer occurs as the denominator of a boundary slope for infinitely many (1,1)-knots and that infinitely many (1,1)-knots have boundary slopes of arbitrarily small difference. Specifically, we prove that for any integers m,n>1$$m,n>1$$ with n odd the exterior of the Montesinos knot K(-1/2,m/(2m±1),1/n)$$K(-1/2, m/(2m\pm 1),1/n)$$ in S3$$S^3$$ contains an essential surface with boundary slope r=2(n-1)2/n$$r = 2(n-1)^2/n$$ if m is even and 2(n+1)2/n$$2(n+1)^2/n$$ if m is odd. If n≥4m+1$$n \ge 4m + 1$$, we prove that K(-1/2,m/(2m+1),1/n)$$K(-1/2, m/(2m+1),1/n)$$ also has a boundary slope whose difference with r is (8m-2)/(n2-4mn+n)$$(8m-2)/(n^2-4mn+n)$$, which decreases to 0 as n increases. All of these knots are (1,1)-knots.

Abstract:The Slope Conjecture relates the degree of the colored Jones polynomial to the boundary slopes of a knot. Abstract:It is conjectured that, on a non-trivial knot in the 3-sphere, no pair of Dehn surgeries along distinct slopes are purely cosmetic, that is, none of them yield 3-manifolds those are orientation-preservingly homeomorphic. In this paper, we show that alternating knots having reduced alternating diagram with the twist number at least 7, Montesinos knots of length at least 5, and alternating Montesinos knots of length at least 4 do not admit purely cosmetic surgeries. As a corollary, we see that large alternating Montesinos knots have no purely cosmetic surgeries.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere $Y$, and $\Sigma$ the corresponding $n$-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that $\Sigma$ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when $n$ is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of $\Sigma$. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various $\eta$-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori of all semi-free actions of $Z/n$ on integral homology 3-spheres; (2) we give a novel obstruction (in terms of the Jones polynomial) for the branched cover of a knot in $S^3$ being an $L$-space; (3) we give a new set of knot concordance invariants in terms of the monopole Lefschetz numbers of covering translations on the branched covers.
Taut foliations from knot diagrams

Abstract:We prove that if a knot $K$ has a particular type of diagram then all non-trivial surgeries on $K$ contain a coorientable taut foliation. Knots admitting such diagrams include many two-bridge knots, many pretzel knots, many Montesinos knots and more generally all arborescent knots defined by weighted planar trees with more than one vertex such that $1)$ all weights have absolute value greater than one, and $2)$ there exists a weight with absolute value greater than two. The ideas involved in the proof can also be adapted to study surgeries on links and as an application we show that for all surgeries $M$ on the Borromean link it holds that $M$ is not an $L$-space if and only if $M$ contains a coorientable taut foliation.

Abstract:Using the Hatcher-Oertel algorithm for finding boundary slopes of Montesinos knots, we prove the Slope Conjecture and the Strong Slope Conjecture for a family of 3-tangle pretzel knots. More precisely, we prove that the maximal degrees of the colored Jones polynomial of such knots determine a boundary slope as predicted by the Slope Conjecture, and that the linear term in the degrees correspond to the Euler characteristic of an essential surface.

Abstract:It is conjectured that a hyperbolic knot admits at most three Dehn surgeries which yield closed three manifolds containing incompressible tori. We show that there exist infinitely many hyperbolic knots which attain the conjectural maximum number. Interestingly, those surgeries correspond to consecutive integers.

Abstract:A conjecture of Shumakovitch states that every nontrivial knot has 2-torsion in its Khovanov homology. We show that if a knot $K$ has no 2-torsion in its Khovanov homology, then the rank of its reduced Khovanov homology is minimal among all knots obtainable from $K$ by a proper rational tangle replacement. It follows, for example, that unknotting number 1 knots have 2-torsion in their Khovanov homology.

Abstract:We give an obstruction for genus one knots $K$, $K'$ to have the Gordian distance one by using the $0$th coefficient of the HOMFLT polynomials. As an application, we give a new constraint for genus one knot to admit a (generalized) cosmetic crossing. Combining known results, we prove the (generalized) cosmetic crossing conjecture for genus one pretzel knots.
Obstructing two-torsion in the rational knot concordance group

Abstract:It is well known that there are many 2-torsion elements in the classical knot concordance group. On the other hand, it is not known if there is any torsion element in the rational knot concordance group $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. Cha defined the algebraic rational concordance group $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$, an analogue of the classical algebraic concordance group, and showed that $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}\cong\mathbb{Z}^\infty\oplus\mathbb{Z}_2^\infty\oplus\mathbb{Z}_4^\infty$. The knots that represent 2-torsions in $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$ potentially have order $2$ in $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. In this paper, we provide an obstruction for knots of order $2$ in $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$ from being of finite order in $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, we give a family consisting of such knots that generates an infinite rank subgroup of $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. We also note that Cha proved that in higher dimensions, the algebraic rational concordance order is the same as the rational knot concordance order. Our obstruction is based on the localized von Neumann $\rho$-invariant.

Abstract:This paper continues a program due to Motegi regarding universal bounds for the number of non-isotopic essential $n$-punctured tori in the complement of a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$. For $n=1$, Valdez-Sánchez showed that there are at most five non-isotopic Seifert tori in the exterior of a hyperbolic knot. In this paper, we address the case $n=2$. We show that there are at most six non-isotopic, nested, essential 2-holed tori in the complement of every hyperbolic knot.

Abstract:For an oriented $3$-manifold $M$, let $\mathcal{S}(M)$ denote its Kauffman bracket skein module over $\mathbb{Z}[q^{\pm\frac{1}{2}}]$. It is shown that $\mathcal{S}(M)$ admits infinitely many torsion elements when $M$ is the exterior of the Montesinos knot $K(a_1/b_1,a_2/b_2,a_3/b_4,a_4/b_4)\subset S^3$ with each $b_i\ge 3$. This provides a negative answer to Problem 1.92 (G)-(i) in the Kirby's list, which asks whether $\mathcal{S}(M)$ is free when $M$ is irreducible and has no incompressible non-boundary parallel torus.

On knot types of clean Lagrangian intersections in $T^*\mathbb{R}^3$

Abstract:Let $K_0$ and $K$ be knots in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Suppose that by a compactly supported Hamiltonian isotopy on $T^*\mathbb{R}^3$, the conormal bundle of $K_0$ is isotopic to a Lagrangian submanifold which intersects the zero section cleanly along $K$. In this paper, we prove some constraints on the pair of knot types of $K_0$ and $K$. One example is that if $K_0$ is the unknot, then $K$ is also the unknot. We also consider some cases where $K_0$ and $K$ have specific knot types, such as torus knots and connected sums of trefoil knots. The key step is finding a DGA map between the Chekanov-Eliashberg DGAs of the unit conormal bundles of knots. The main results are deduced from a relation between the augmentation varieties of $K_0$ and $K$ determined by these DGAs.

Non-integer characterizing slopes and knot Floer homology

Abstract:Conjecturally, a knot in the 3-sphere has only finitely many non-integer non-characterizing slopes. We verify this conjecture for all knots with knot Floer homology satisfying certain simplicity conditions. The class of knots satisfying our notion of simplicity includes alternating knots, $L$-space knots and the vast majority of knots with at most 12 crossings. For arbitrary knots in the 3-sphere we show that almost all slopes $p/q$ with $|q|\geq 3$ are characterizing. In addition, we show that all $L$-space knots and almost $L$-space knots have infinitely many integer characterizing slopes.

Abstract:The ratio of volume to crossing number of a hyperbolic knot is known to be bounded above by the volume of a regular ideal octahedron, and a similar bound is conjectured for the knot determinant per crossing. We investigate a natural question motivated by these bounds: For which knots are these ratios nearly maximal? We show that many families of alternating knots and links simultaneously maximize both ratios.

Abstract:Marino's conjecture remains underexplored within the framework of $SO(N )$ string dualities. In this article, we investigated the reformulated invariants of a one-parameter family of knots $\left[ K\right]_p$ derived from tangle surgery on Manolescu's quasi-alternating knot diagrams. Within topological string dualities, we have verified Marino's integrality conjecture for these families of knots up to the Young diagram representation ${\bf R}$, with ${|\bf R|}\leq 2$. Furthermore, through our analysis, we have conjectured the closed structure of extremal refined BPS integers for the torus knots $ \left[{\bf 3_1}\right]_{2p+1}$ and $ \left[{\bf 8_{20}}\right]_{2p+1}$, $p \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$. As the parameter $p$ of the knot diagram increases, the total crossing number of a knot exceeds $16$, which we describe as a complex knot. Interestingly, we discovered a maximum number of gaps in the BPS spectra associated with complex knot families. Moreover, our observations indicated that as $p$ increases, the size of these gaps also expands.

Abstract:We calculate the twisted Alexander polynomials of all tunnel number one Montesinos knots associated to their $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-representations and obtain their leading coefficients and degrees. As a corollary, we get some interesting examples, that is, nonfibered knots with monic Alexander polynomials which have non-monic twisted Alexander polynomials.
