The Health Effects of Pathologists Exposed to Formaldehyde

Abstract:Objective To assess the health effects in pathologists exposed to formaldehyde. Methods 116 pathologists were enrolled as exposed groups,while 118 unexposed to formaldehyde pathologists as control group. Formaldehyde concentrations were determined in workplaces of pathology department in hospitals. A survey with a questionnaire was conducted, the olfactory function and pulmonary function for all subjects were examined. Results The average concentrations of formaldehyde was 1.60±1.10 mg/m3(0.18-5.84 mg/m3)at the department of pathology in hospitals. Primary irritation to the eye and upper respiratory tract seemed more frequent in the high exposed group(≥2 mg/m3)of pathologists than in other groups(P < 0.001). Allergic rhinitis of exposed group was higher than that in the contro(lP < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in the olfactory threshold among pathologists and controls(P > 0.05). Compared to the controls,the olfactory acuity among pathologists including all in different exposure level of formaldehyde was decreased(P < 0.001). There was a significant dose response relationship between exposure dose and the olfactory acuity. A decrease in pulmonary function has been found in pathologists,and there is more impressible change in female then in male pathologists. Conclusion It showed that exposure to formaldehyde had made the pathologists health changed:primary irritation of the upper respiratory tract increased,the olfactory acuity reduced and pulmonary function decreased.
