Abstract:The dyeing properties of the polylactic acid (PLA) fiber with four different disperse dyes was studied. In the disperse dyeing process, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis was applied to test and analyze the changes of the glass-transition and melting temperature of the dyed and pure PLA fiber. The results indicated that not only the structure of the dispersed dyes and the dyeing conditions affected the dyeing performance of PLA fiber, but also the degree of the crystallinity of PLA fiber contributed to the final dyeing results. Moreover, the transformation of such crystallinity during the disperse dyeing process should be taken into account when the dyeing temperature was studied.

Abstract:The feasibility of polylactic acid fiber dyeing with disperse dye in supercritical carbon dioxide fluid was discussed.The influence of temperature,pressure and time on dyeing results was researched.The optimal dyeing process was settled through orthogonal test.As a result,the K/S value was obviously increased along with heating,the maximum K/S value was obtained induced by changing the pressure and time.The optimal dyeing process with disperse dye was temperature 100℃, time 40 min and pressure 20 MPa.

Abstract:Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fiber was developed more than a decade ago. It has been regarded as the most promising sustainable and biodegradable fiber to replace conventional polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polyester fiber in textile products. This paper reviews recent developments in PLA polymerization, PLA filament and fiber spinning, staple yarn spinning, fabric production, dyeing and finishing and aftercare procedures. The properties of PLA fiber are broadly similar to those of PET fiber; however, the properties of PLA fiber that differ, including thermal degradation and low hydrolytic resistance to strong alkaline, significantly affect the method selection and parameter setting of production and processing of PLA fibers and fabrics. PLA filaments are mainly produced by two-step melt spinning to get fibers with stable quality, but degradation at high temperature is still a problem. PLA staple yarns are normally spun using ring spinning. Currently existing knitting or weaving techniques can be used to produce PLA fabrics. PLA fabrics can be dyed with disperse dyes at 110°C, but their color fastness and shades are different from PET fabrics when using the same dyes. The scouring and dyeing of PLA/cotton blended fabrics and the reductive clearing after dyeing remain to be improved. As a new fiber, the entry of PLA fiber into the textile market faces difficult challenges as well as great opportunities in the future.

Abstract:The polylactic acid fiber was dyed by selected disperse dyes.The influence of auxiliary on diffusion coefficient D was determined by measuring the dye-uptake and half-dyeing time,and proved by Hill equation,and therefore the dyeing dynamics of PLA fiber was researched.The results showed that half-dyeing time,was prolonged in the presence of three kinds of dyeing auxiliaries at 105 ℃,which meant to lower the dyeing rate and dye uptake.After adding the nonionic surfactants 524 and anionic dispersing agent JS-N,dyeing velocity coefficient K would reduce and half-dyeing time would notably increase.Increasing in diffusion coefficient D with leveler 2011 was beneficial to the dye uptake.

Abstract:This paper studies the influence of two kinds of dyeing auxiliaries on the dyeing thermodynamic parameters of the polylactic acid fiber knitted fabric through applying the disperse red C. I. 74 to dye the polylactic acid fiber knitted fabric. It is found that the adsorption of the polylactic acid fiber knitted fabric to the disperse dye is in accordance with the Nernst adsorption. In addition, this paper works out the adsorption isotherm of the polylactic acid fiber and calculates the dyeing affinity, dyeing therm and dyeing entropy. The research results show that the dyeing affinity of the polylactic acid fiber under high temperature conditions is always higher that that under low temperature conditions when using disperse red C. I. 74.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable material derived from industrial crops such as corn and straw, is increasingly recognized in various sectors, including textiles, food, and medicine. However, the dyeability and biodegradability of PLA a key factor contributing to its growing popularity. Herein, we report a sustainable dyeing method for the coloration of PLA fibers with excellent fastness using dispersed dyes. The results showed that the dyed PLA fabric exhibited a K/S value of 8.4, along with impressive grade 4 fastness to both dry and wet rubbing. Additionally, the dyed PLA fabric exhibited increased hydrophilicity and enhanced surface roughness. Most importantly, during the hydrolytic degradation experiment, the dyed polylactic acid fabric experienced a notable 36 % decrease in quality when exposed to a water environment characterized by a pH of 11, a temperature of 40 degrees C, and a duration of 60 days, whereas the control PLA fabric is only 8 %. The hydrolytic degradation of PLA occurs at its fastest rate when the color of the dye is at its optimal intensity, the environmental temperature is elevated, and the pH level is in an alkaline state. The degradation rate of PLA fabric initially tends to be rapid, followed by a gradual slowdown. This research may provide a useful guideline for the proper storage of dyed PLA fabrics and their use in the textile industry.
Ultrasonic dyeing of polylatic acid blended fabric

Abstract:Dyeing behaviors of polylatic acid blended fabric assisted with ultrasonic wave were studied,the results were compared with those of conventional dyeing.Effects of ultrasonic wave on dye liquor and fabric were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and laser particle size analyzer.The results showed that ultrasonic treatment could break the micelles of disperse dyes,therefore,dye uptake and K/S value could be increased.After ultrasonic treatment,the fabric had no obvious etching on surface nor changes in α crystalline form,and only a little decrease in strength and intensity of diffraction.

Abstract:The rates of dye-uptake of 6 different dyes,such as C.I.Disperse Blue 56,were determined.Factors influencing the stability of C.I.Disperse Blue 56 were studied systematically.Weight average particle size(Dw) and weight specific surface area(Sw) were measured.The average particle size of DyStar Dianix Yellow XF was about 0.85 μm determined by JL9200 laser particle size instrument.Results showed that particle size obeys normal distribution,the size of 85% dye particles was smaller than 0.98 μm.By contrast,the particle size of two domestic dyes was larger than 1.6 μm and the cumulative average particle size was between 8 and 10 μm on the whole,which was 9 times as big as average particle size of the imported dye and the distribution was inhomogeneous.The grinding condition was selected and a stable homogeneous disperse dye solution was obtained by studying the relations between disperse dye particle size and dyeing performance.The average exhaustion rate increased 7% by using fineness improved disperse dye.

Abstract:Prepared from the fermentation product of natural sugar,poly lactic acid fiber(PLA)possesses many advantages:biodegradability,biocompatibility,nontoxicity,hydrophilicity,low density,good flexibility and crimpness.Therefore,PLA becomes the mostly reported ecologyical textile fiber.Dyeing of PLA is one of the most important applications of PLA.In this paper,by a series of 1,4-N-alkyl anthraquinone dyes synthesized in our lab,dyeing processes for PLA were discussed.The optimal condition was confirmed and the best dyeing effect was achieved by 1,4-N-n-hexyl anthraquinone dye.

Abstract:One bath with high efficient desizing enzymes is used to desize the PLA/Richcel/bamboo fiber blended fabric.The dosage of desizing enzymes,hydrogen peroxide and scouring agent,pH value,the holding temperature and time are respectively studied by using the breaking strength,the whiteness and the weight loss rate as a proof and then the appropriate ranges are got.These factors are further confirmed through L_16(45) orthogonal experiment and the optimum technological parameters are gained.The result shows that one bath with high efficient desizing enzymes pretreatment process can fulfil the following manufacture requests and favor the cleaner production.

Abstract:With growing concern over the environmental effects of petroleum-based plastics, significant strides have been made in developing bio-based materials. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable material made from renewable starch . It has garnered considerable attention for its outstanding performance and ability to biodegrade in plastic products. However, the utilization of PLA fibers in fabrics has been restricted because of their challenges in dyeing and vulnerability to hydrolysis when exposed to high temperatures. In this study, we propose utilizing a natural and environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvent (NaDES) to modify PLA fibers, which results in outstanding dyeability at low temperatures. This modification technique offers the potential for sustainable textile processing. Under identical dyeing time conditions to C.I. Disperse Orange 30, NaDES-treated PLA exhibits comparable coloring performance to untreated PLA at 90 °C when dyed at 70 °C. Compared to conventional PLA dyeing, treating PLA with NaDES reduces the crystalline diffraction intensity of the fibers. This leads to a surface that is rougher and a looser structure. This leads to darker colors because the dye diffuses more easily into the fibers. Energy consumption and life cycle assessment results indicate that this process not only achieves a greater color depth of the PLA fabric but also reduces energy consumption by about 25.5%. The methodology proposed in this study presents a viable strategy for establishing a sustainable and circular economy with low carbon emissions, utilizing clean and alternative technologies.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. The most applicable polymer in different applications is poly(lactic acid) (PLA) due its merits. This polymer attracts great interest as an environmentally friendly bioplastic polymer. The main goal of this work is to enhance the different physical properties of PLA. The melt-spun process was used to produce a continuous multifilament yarns of PLA textile fibers. The mechanical properties (tensile properties) of PLA(D600) filaments were studied. The tensile modulus and the maximum tensile strength were 3 and 0.4 GPa, respectively. The effect of the cold-drawing process on some physical properties, such as the melting temperature, glass transition temperature, crystallinity, birefringence, and orientation factor, were measured. The crystallinity values changed as the draw ratio increased, confirming the reorientations and chain packing. From the obtained results of the different physical properties, it was concluded that the drawing process has a great effect on performance of PLA fibers.

Abstract:In this paper, the application of the ultrasonic technology to the enzyme desizing pretreatment of polylactic acid (PLA) fiber was studied, and the different effect of such technology and traditional treatment on the PLA properties was also discussed. The results showed that, with the aid of the ultrasonic wave, the mass decrease rate and the whiteness of fiber increased 15% and 25% respectively, while the tear strength decreased nearly 6% after the enzyme pretreatment. Besides, the time of ultrasonic pretreatment also decreased 20% compared with traditional process. The optimal enzyme desizing conditions and fomula were accomplished, the concentration of H2O2 and refining agent should be 6 mL/L and 4 g/L, the recommended enzyme concentration was 5 g/L.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) when combined with 3D-printing technology has been used in various fields owing to its excellent biodegradability. However, the application of PLA as a 3D-printing material is limited by several characteristics, such as its fragility with a poor impact resistance and poor dimensional stability. Recently, PLA has been processed to improve its properties and retain its biodegradable advantages, thus significantly enhancing the performance of PLA materials in several aspects, such as their mechanical properties, printability, print quality, and functionalization. This paper specifically focuses on PLA in 3D printing and reviews the latest processing methods of 3D-printed PLA developed in the last three years, including physical, chemical, and chemical/physical composite processing methods. It also introduces the processing methods and results of PLA in different extrusion stages, as well as its print quality and application in various printing processes. Finally, it reviews the functional processing of products in terms of applications. This review provides reliable data for further research on PLA, which can be used as a reference for the practical application and production of PLA and MEX.

Abstract:Azo dye(C.I.disperse red 74) was used to dye poly(lactic acid)(PLA) knitted fabric.The influence of three kinds of auxiliaries on dyeing thermodynamic parameters of PLA fiber was studied(auxiliaries didn't change the distributing mechanism of disperse dye in the PLA knitted fabric,the kind of adsorption belongs to Nernst adsorption).Adsorption isotherms of PLA knitted fiber were obtained and the effective absorption volume(Var) was determined.On the basis of experimental results,the dyeing affinity,dyeing heat and dyeing entropy were calculated.The results indicated that the dyeing affinity at high temperature was higher than at low temperature.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) fibers are receiving growing interest as one of the recent innovative materials being developed for various applications. The inherent biodegradability of PLA makes it highly attractive for the biomedical and health care sectors. PLA fibers need to be partially and/or highly oriented to allow high performance and readiness for a wide range of manufacturability. In this study, the structure and properties of PLA fibers, manufactured at different spinning speeds, were studied. Laser diffractometry, polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to determine the diameter, birefringence, molecular orientation, enthalpy and degree of crystallinity of as-spun and drawn PLA fibers. The results of DSC and XRD showed that the degree of crystallinity of the PLA fibers is significantly improved for the drawn PLA fibers compared to the as-spun fibers and leveled off in the case of changing the take-up speeds of drawn fibers.

Abstract:The sorption thermodynamics and kinetics of disperse dyes on polylactic acid (PLA) fibers were investigated. PLA is crucial for a sustainable textile industry. However, the low dye exhaustion limits the textile application of PLA fibers. The basic dyeing parameters have been determined to provide an in-depth understanding of dyeing behavior. The weak sorption affinities were attributed to the weak dye-fiber interaction and favorable chemical potential of dyes in solvent. Enthalpy–entropy compensation effect also played a role in weak sorption. The interplay of dye structure and enthalpy, entropy changes was rationalized using molecular surface area and rotatable bonds. The conformation constraint strategy was proposed to overcome weak sorption affinity problem by lowering the entropy penalty. Temperature dependence of diffusion coefficients was well reproduced using molecular collision based diffusion model. The activation energies of diffusion have been correlated with molecular volumes of dyes.
