Abstract:The present paper gives calculations in detail to prove several special cases of Atiyah-Singer theorem through supersymmetric $\sigma$-models. Some technical tricks are employed to calculate the determinants of fluctuation operators of the path integrals. An intuitive and geometric argument is applied to overcome the complicated calculation on spin fields twisted by gauge fields.

Abstract:The Peierls bracket quantization scheme is applied to the supersymmetric system corresponding to the twisted spin index theorem. A detailed study of the quantum system is presented, and the Feynman propagator is exactly computed. The Green's function methods provide a direct derivation of the index formula. Note: This is essentially a new SUSY proof of the index theorem.

Abstract:The author presents an alternate proof of the Bismut-Zhang localization formula of ηinvariants, when the target manifold is a sphere, by using ideas of mod k index theory instead of the difficult analytic localization techniques of Bismut-Lebeau. As a consequence, it is shown that the R/Z part of the analytically defined ηinvariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer for a Dirac operator on an odd dimensional closed spin manifold can be expressed purely geometrically through a stable Chern-Simons current on a higher dimensional sphere. As a preliminary application, the author discusses the relation with the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer R/Z index theorem for unitary flat vector bundles, and proves an R refinement in the case where the Dirac operator is replaced by the Signature operator.

Abstract:We develop techniques to calculate an index for four dimensional superconformal field theories. This superconformal index is counting BPS operators which preserve only one supercharge. To calculate the superconformal index we quantize the field theory on S^3 X R and show that the twisted theory has an appropriate mass gap. This allows for the interactions to be switched off continuously without the superconformal index being changed. We test those techniques for theories which go through a non-trivial RG flow and for Seiberg dual theories. This leads to the conjecture of some group/number theoretical identities.
Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index and domain-wall eta invariants

Abstract:In this paper we establish a formula, expressing the generalized Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index in terms of eta invariants of domain-wall massive Dirac operators, without assuming that the Dirac operator on the boundary is invertible. Compared with the original Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem, this formula has the advantage that no global spectral projection boundary conditions appear. Our main tool is an asymptotic gluing formula for eta invariants proved by using a splitting principle developed by Douglas and Wojciechowski in adiabatic limit. The eta invariant splits into a contribution from the interior, one from the boundary, and an error term vanishing in the adiabatic limit process.

Abstract:Supersymmetric quantum mechanical models are computed by the Path integral approach. In the $\beta\rightarrow0$ limit, the integrals localize to the zero modes. This allows us to perform the index computations exactly because of supersymmetric localization, and we will show how the geometry of target space enters the physics of sigma models resulting in the relationship between the supersymmetric model and the geometry of the target space in the form of topological invariants. Explicit computation details are given for the Euler characteristics of the target manifold, and the index of Dirac operator for the model on a spin manifold.

Abstract:One-dimensional quantum mechanical models obeying Smilga's weak supersymmetry are described in the matrix form. They are related to the parasupersymmetric and higher-order derivative deformations of the standard supersymmetric models discussed earlier. Their superconformal indices are computed and shown to be equivalent to the Witten indices for the second order supersymmetric quantum mechanics.

Abstract:When a $4D$ supersymmetric theory is placed on $S^3 \times \mathbb{R}$, the supersymmetric algebra is necessarily modified to $su(2|1)$ and we are dealing with a weak supersymmetric system. For such systems, the excited states of the Hamiltonian are not all paired. As a result, the Witten index Tr$\{(-1)^F e^{-\beta H}\}$ is no longer an integer number, but a $\beta$-dependent function. However, this function stays invariant under deformations of the theory that keep the supersymmetry algebra intact. Based on the Hilbert space analysis, we give a simple general proof of this fact. We then show how this invariance works for two simplest weak supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems involving a real or a complex bosonic degree of freedom.

Supersymmetric index for small black holes

Abstract:Supersymmetric elementary string states in the compactified heterotic string theory are described by small black holes that have zero area event horizon. In this paper we compute the supersymmetric index of such elementary string states using gravitational path integral. The dominant contribution to the path integral comes from an Euclidean rotating black hole solution of the supergravity theory with a finite area event horizon, but the logarithm of the index, computed from the saddle point, vanishes. Nevertheless we show that the solution is singular on certain subspaces of the horizon where higher derivative corrections can be important, and once the higher derivative corrections are taken into account the solution could yield a finite result for the logarithm of the index whose form agrees with the microscopic results up to an overall numerical constant. While the numerical constant is not determined in our analysis, we show that it is independent of the details of the compactification and even the number of non-compact dimensions, in agreement with the microscopic results.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the equivalence between two seemingly distinct 2d TQFTs: one comes from the “Coulomb branch index” of the class 𝒮 theory T[Σ,G] on L(k,1) × S^1 , the other is the ^L G “equivariant Verlinde formula”, or equivalently partition function of ^L G_ℂ complex Chern–Simons theory on Σ× S^1 . We first derive this equivalence using the M-theory geometry and show that the gauge groups appearing on the two sides are naturally G and its Langlands dual ^L G . When G is not simply-connected, we provide a recipe of computing the index of T[Σ,G] as summation over the indices of T[Σ,G̃] with non-trivial background ’t Hooft fluxes, where G̃ is the universal cover of G . Then we check explicitly this relation between the Coulomb index and the equivariant Verlinde formula for G=SU(2) or SO (3). In the end, as an application of this newly found relation, we consider the more general case where G is SU ( N ) or PSU ( N ) and show that equivariant Verlinde algebra can be derived using field theory via (generalized) Argyres–Seiberg duality. We also attach a Mathematica notebook that can be used to compute the SU (3) equivariant Verlinde coefficients.

The SUSY Index Beyond the Cardy Limit

Abstract:We analyze a set of contributions to the superconformal index of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 4$ $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills using the Bethe Ansatz approach. These contributions dominate at the large $N$ limit, where their leading order in $N$ reproduces various supersymmetric Euclidean black hole saddles in the dual theory, and they also dominate for finite $N$ in high temperature Cardy-like limits. We compute the $O(N^0)$ terms, including those exponentially suppressed in the Cardy limit, and show that there are no $1/N$ corrections beyond them. Under certain assumptions, it implies that the gravitational perturbative series around these black hole saddles is 1-loop exact.

Abstract:We prove a super-version of Nest-Tsygan's algebraic index theorem. This work is inspired by the appearance of the same cobordism invariants in three related stories: index theory, trace methods in the deformation theory of algebras, and partition functions in quantum field theory. We show that one can recover the cobordism invariant appearing in supersymmetric quantum mechanics using trace methods for the associated deformation quantization problem.

Abstract:We consider the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) index theorem corresponding to the chiral symmetry of a continuum formulation of staggered fermions called Kähler-Dirac fermions, which have been recently investigated as an ingredient in lattice constructions of chiral gauge theories. We point out that there are two notions of chiral symmetry for Kähler-Dirac fermions, both having a mixed perturbative anomaly with gravity leading to index theorems on closed manifolds. By formulating these theories on a manifold with boundary, we find the APS index theorems corresponding to each of these symmetries, necessary for a complete picture of anomaly inflow, using a recently discovered physics-motivated proof. We comment on a fundamental difference between the nature of these two symmetries by showing that a sensible local, symmetric boundary condition only exists for one of the two symmetries. This sheds light on how these symmetries behave under lattice discretization, and in particular on their use for recent symmetric-mass generation proposals.

One-form symmetries and the 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $A$-model: Topologically twisted indices and CS theories

Abstract:We study three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter gauge theories with a one-form symmetry in the $A$-model formalism on $\Sigma_g\times S^1$. We explicitly compute expectation values of topological line operators that implement the one-form symmetry. This allows us to compute the topologically twisted index on the closed Riemann surface $\Sigma_g$ for any real compact gauge group $G$ as long as the ground states are all bosonic. All computations are carried out in the effective $A$-model on $\Sigma_g$, whose $S^1$ ground states are the so-called Bethe vacua. We discuss how the 3d one-form symmetry acts on the Bethe vacua, and also how its 't Hooft anomaly constrains the vacuum structure. In the special case of the $SU(N)_K$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ Chern-Simons theory, we obtain results for the $(SU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_r)^{\theta}_K$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ Chern-Simons theories, for all non-anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_r \subseteq \mathbb{Z}_N$ subgroups of the centre of the gauge group, and with a $\mathbb{Z}_r$ $\theta$-angle turned on. In the special cases with $N$ even, $\frac{N}{r}$ odd and $\frac{K}{r}$ even, we find a mixed 't Hooft anomaly between gravity and the $\mathbb{Z}_r^{(1)}$ one-form symmetry of the $SU(N)_K$ theory, and the infrared 3d TQFT after gauging is spin. In all cases, we count the Bethe states and the higher-genus states in terms of refinements of Jordan's totient function. This counting gives us the twisted indices if and only if the infrared 3d TQFT is bosonic. Our results lead to precise conjectures about integrality of indices, which appear to have a strong number-theoretic flavour. Abstract:We propose an upper bound on the Atiyah-Singer index in the effective action of string theory. For E 8 × and SO(32) heterotic string theories on smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds with line bundles, we find that the tadpole cancellation and supersymmetry conditions lead to an upper bound on the generation number of quarks and leptons as well as Higgs doublets. By taking into account the observed value of four-dimensional gauge couplings and the supergravity approximation, we explicitly evaluate the bound on favorable complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds. The bound can be extended to Calabi-Yau threefolds in the Kreuzer-Skarke database. We also put the upper bound on the Atiyah-Singer index in Type IIB/F-theory compactifications.

The Bethe Ansatz for the superconformal index with unequal angular momenta

Abstract:A few years ago it was shown that the superconformal index of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in the large $N$ limit matches with the entropy of $1/16$-supersymmetric black holes in type IIB string theory on $AdS_5\times S^5$. In some cases, an even more detailed match between the two sides is possible. When the two angular momentum chemical potentials in the index are equal, the superconformal index can be written as a discrete sum of Bethe ansatz solutions, and it was shown that specific terms in this sum are in a one-to-one correspondence to stable black hole solutions, and that the matching can be extended to non-perturbative contributions from wrapped D3-branes. A Bethe ansatz approach to computing the superconformal index exists also when the ratio of the angular momentum chemical potentials is any rational number, but in those cases it involves a sum over a very large number of terms (growing exponentially with $N$). Benini et al showed that a specific one of these terms matches with the black hole, but the role of the other terms is not clear. In this paper we analyze some of the additional contributions to the index in the Bethe ansatz approach, and we find that their matching to the gravity side is much more complicated than in the case of equal chemical potentials. In particular, we find some contributions that are larger than the one which was found to match the black holes, so that they must cancel with other large contributions. We give some evidence that cancellations of this type are possible, but we leave a full understanding of how they work to the future.

Abstract:We consider the N = (2, 2) AdS 3 /CFT 2 dualities proposed by Eberhardt, where the bulk geometry is AdS 3 × ( S 3 × T 4 )/Z k , and the CFT is a deformation of the symmetric orbifold of the supersymmetric sigma model T 4 /Z k (with k = 2, 3, 4, 6). The elliptic genera of the two sides vanish due to fermionic zero modes, so for microstate counting applications one must consider modified supersymmetric indices. In an analysis similar to that of Maldacena, Moore, and Strominger for the standard N = (4, 4) case of T 4 , we study the appropriate helicity-trace index of the boundary CFTs. We encounter a strange phenomenon where a saddle-point analysis of our indices reproduces only a fraction (respectively , , , ) of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the associated macroscopic black branes.
