Abstract:Methyl esters (biodiesel) were produced by transesterification of cottonseed oil with methanol in the presence of solid bases as heterogeneous catalyst. The solid base catalysts MgO, CaO and MgO-Al2 O3 were prepared respectively from the dissociation of basic magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate and hydrotalcite at elevated temperature. The experiments show that the CaO and MgO-Al2O3 have high catalytic activity for transesterification reaction, and the yield of methy1 esters reaches over 90% under the condition of 230°C, methanol/oil mole ratio of 12, and catalyst dosage(catalyst/oil) of 2% after reaction 3h. The CO2-TPD profiles show that the catalysts CaO and MgO-Al2O3 have high base strength and more amount of base site, which implicates those catalysts will have a higher catalytic activity.

Abstract:Methyl esters (biodiesel) were produced by the transesterification of cottonseed oil with methanol in the presence of solid acids as heterogeneous catalysts. The solid acids were prepared by mounting H 2 SO 4 on TiO 2 · n H 2 O and Zr(OH) 4 , respectively, followed by calcining at 823K. TiO 2 -SO 4 2− and ZrO 2 -SO 4 2− showed high activity for the transesterification. The yield of methyl esters was over 90% under the conditions of 230°C, methanol/oil mole ratio of 12:1, reaction time 8 h and catalyst amount (catalyst/oil) of 2% (w). The solid acid catalysts showed more better adaptability than solid base catalysts when the oil has high acidity. IR spectral analysis of absorbed pyridine on the samples showed that there were Lewis and Brønsted acid sites on the catalysts.

Abstract:Transesterification of cottonseed oil with methanol to biodiesel was investigated in various Bronsted acidic ionic liquids with an alkane sulfonic acid group. The properties, structures, and acidities of the ionic liquids were experimentally characterized and theoretically analyzed. The Bronsted acidity-activity correlation for the ionic liquids was studied. Among all these ionic liquids, 1-(4-sulfonic acid) butylpyridinium hydrogen sulfate exhibited the best catalytic performance, which is ascribed to its strong Bronsted acidity. The catalytic activity of ionic liquids was near that of concentrated sulfuric acid. The influences of ionic liquid dosage, molar ratio of methanol to cottonseed oil, and reaction temperature were explored using 1-(4-sulfonic acid) butylpyridinium hydrogen sulfate as the catalyst; the results were systematically explained. A high yield of fatty acid methyl esters of 92% was obtained under a mild reaction condition. The separation of the biodiesel can be performed by simple decantation.

Abstract:A carbon-based solid acid catalyst was prepared by the sulfonation of carbonized vegetable oil asphalt and used to catalyze the transesterification of methanol with cottonseed oil. This catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, BET surface area and pore size measurement, thermogravimetry analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The sulfonated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (s-MWCNTs) was also prepared and used to catalyze the same transesterification as the asphalt catalyst. The asphalt-based catalyst shows higher activity than the s-MWCNTs for the production of biodiesel, which may be correlated to its high acid site density, its loose irregular network and large pores can provide more acid sites for the reactants. The conversion of cottonseed oil 89.93% was obtained (using the asphalt-based catalyst) when the methanol/cottonseed oil molar ratio was 18.2, reaction temperature at 260 degrees C, reaction time 3.0 h and catalyst/cottonseed oil mass ratio of 0.2%. Also, it can be re-used. The sulfonated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons provide an electron-withdrawing function to keep the acid site stable. The catalyst can substantially reduce energy consumption and waste generation in the production of biodiesel. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The transesterification of cottonseed oil to biodiesel catalyzed by ionic liquids was studied. Several water-stable Bronsted-acidic ionic liquids with an alkane sulfonic acid group were synthesized. These ionic liquids show good catalytic activity for the transesterification of cottonseed oil. The catalytic activity of each ionic liquid is dependent on its cation. The ionic liquid 1-(4-sulfonic acid) butylpyridinium hydrogen sulfate shows the best catalytic activity, which is nearly the same as the catalytic activity of concentrated sulfuric acid. The produced biodiesel can be separated via simple decantation, and the ionic liquids can be reused after distillation.

Abstract:This study outlined an integrated approach for obtaining several products, such as biodiesel, gossypol, sterols, raffinose, and nontoxic cottonseed meal from cottonseed via modified two-phase extraction (TPE), supercritical methanol transesterification and other technologies. The modified TPE could not only simplify the steps of separating substances, but also improve the quality of cottonseed oil and cottonseed meal. The suitable conditions of modified TPE were as follows: the petroleum ether/methanol volume rate of 1:3, the extraction temperature of 40 degrees C, and the extraction time of 20 min. The supercritical methanol transesterification had a favorable yield of biodiesel with shorter time. The conversion of cottonseed oil was up to 97.5% with the temperature of 270 degrees C, the molar ratio of methanol to oil of 40, and a reaction time of 40 min at 10 MPa. Meanwhile, with the suitable conditions, the purity of the obtained gossypol, sterols and raffinose could be got to 92.1%, 89.8% and 94.2%, respectively. This integrated biorefinery could be useful for comprehensive development and utilization of cottonseed with fewer steps and lower cost. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Alkali-catalyzed and supercritical methanol transesterification were used to produce biodiesel from Chinese cottonseed. Fourier transform infrared and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry were used to identify the compositions of cottonseed oil biodiesel samples. Six major compositions of the biodiesel samples were identified by the retention time and the fragmentation pattern data of GC/MS analysis. The yields of biodiesel samples obtained from alkali-catalyzed reaction and supercritical methanol transesterification were 98.4 and 99%, respectively. In comparison to the alkaline transesterification, the supercritical methanol transesterification combining with two-phase extraction was more suitable for biodiesel production due to shorter reaction time, less purification steps, and lower cost.

The KF/MgO has been selected as the most efficient catalyst for the reactions with the yield of 99.3%. Operational simplicity, without need of the purification of raw vegetable oil, low cost of the catalyst used, high activities, no saponification and reusability are the key features of this methodology.

Abstract:Biodiesel production is recommended to achieve sustainable energy practices because of its high compatibility with petrol-derived diesel. Conventionally, acid- or alkaline-catalyzed transesterification of refined oil is used for biodiesel production, however, oil extraction and refinement from oil-bearing biomass leads to losses. Therefore, we propose a novel approach that directly converts cottonseeds into biodiesel. Biodiesel yield from non-catalytic transesterification of cottonseed oil at 360 °C within 1 min was high at 96.3 wt%, surpassing the yield (80.6 wt%) from alkali-catalyzed transesterification at 60 °C for 60 min. Biodiesel yield from non-catalytic transesterification of cottonseed at 360 °C within 1 min was 22.7 wt%. For cottonseed oil content (20.9 wt%), overall biodiesel yield from cottonseed was 108.7 wt%, implying that oil extraction using conventional methods was incomplete. Therefore, directly converting cottonseed into biodiesel through non-catalytic transesterification is a viable and efficient alternative for biodiesel production.

Abstract:Using cottonseed oil and methanol as raw materials,KOH as catalyst,the biodiesel was prepared by transesterification reaction assisted with microwave.The effect of the molar ratio of methanol to oil,catalyst dosage,reaction time and microwave power on transesterification was researched.Through orthogonal analysis,the optimum conditions were obtained as follows: molar ratio of methanol to oil 9∶1,catalyst dosage 1.0%,reaction time 3 min and microwave power 360 W.The conversion rate was more than 94% under the optimum conditions.The reaction time could be decreased by 30~35 min comparing with traditional method.The main quality indexes of biodiesel in the experiment reached the same standards EN14214 of Europe and Chinese and infrared spectrum analysis of biodiesel made by cottonseed oil has functional group of biodiesel.

Abstract:Fatty acid esters derived from vegetable oil and animal fat have assumed importance as a raw material for chemical industry and a potential diesel fuel extender known as biodiesel.Transesterification is one of the most important methods of esters preparation from oil and fat.The latest advances in the preparation of fatty ester via homogeneous and heterogeneous basic catalysts,which include alkaline–earth metals,layered double hydroxide and molecular sieves,are reviewed.For the high acid value oil,“two steps transesterification ” and solid acid catalyst are discussed.The relationship between structure and catalysis of sulfonic fused ring compounds and meso-pore materials are analyzed.Many scientists are interested in lipase catalysts for their moderate reactive conditions and low contamination.Reducing the effects of short chain alcohol on the catalytic activity and increasing the conversion rate are the more important aspects.In the supercritical conditions,methanol and oil can react quickly and water is not harmful to the transesterification.In this work,the advantages and disadvantages of four methods are analyzed,and the research and development are discussed.

Abstract:Cottonseed biodiesel was prepared under ultrasonic wave using KOH as base catalyst. The response surface method design was applies to design experiment. The results show that the reaction time was much shorter than that of conventional mechanical agitation with the help of low frequency ultrasonic, the reaction conversion achieved 97.35% in 20 minutes under this condition. The results show that the optimum conditions are the molar ratio of methanol to oil of 6.5:1, supersonic wave time of 20 min, duty cycle of 27.65%, and catalyst dosage of 0.9%, the FAME yield of 97.35%. The quality criteria of the biodiesel produced from cottonseed oil meet the same standards EN14214 of Europe.

Abstract:Preparation of biodiesel oil from cottonseed oil catalyzed by B-acidic ionic liquids was studied. Several water-stable B-acidic ionic liquids with an alkane sulfonic acid group were synthesized and showed good catalytic activity in transesterification of cottonseed oil to biodiesel oil. Catalytic activity of each ionic liquid depended upon the type of nitrogen containing group and length of carbon chain. The ionic liquid l-(4-sulfonic acid) butyl-pyridinium hydrosulfate showed the best catalytic activity to transesterification. Effects of ionic liquids dosage, mole ratio of methanol to cottonseed oil and reaction temperature on transesterification and stability of ionic liquids were investigated. Under optimal transesterification conditions: n(methanol) : n(cottonseed oil) : n(ionic liquids) =12 : 1 : 0.057, temperature 170°C and time 5 h, mass fraction of fatty acid methyl ester could reach 92.0%. The ionic liquids were stable and could be reused.

Abstract:Waste frying oil is a highly promising feedstock for biodiesel production due to its lower cost compared to refined vegetable oils. In this study, biodiesel was prepared by transesterification of mixed waste frying oil with dimethyl carbonate, utilizing immobilized recombinant lipase in tert -butanol as the medium. The activation energy ( E a ) and pre-exponential factor (k 0 ) were determined to be 73.8 kJ/mol and 1.62×10 6 , respectively. Under optimal reaction conditions, the biodiesel yield can reach 88.5%. Subsequently, cottonseed oil was introduced into the feedstock to enhance the crystallization temperature of the product, which enables biodiesel production to meet the fuel property standards. The cold filter plugging point of biodiesel was reduced to 4.3 °C. Ultimately, blending biodiesel with diesel significantly reduces smoke emissions from diesel engines, with the B80 blend demonstrating superior effectiveness. This study presents an efficient and cost-effective method for biodiesel production.

Abstract:Contrasting the lipase absorbability of different carriers,D101 was screened as the carrier.Absorbed on D101,the lipase was then cross-linked by glutaraldehyde.Compared with the free lipase,the stability of immobilized lipase was improved in certain degree.The optimal pH and temperature of immobilized one was 8 and 50℃,respectively.Immobilized lipase was used to catalyze the transesterification of cottonseed oils for the production of biodiesel.The optimal reaction condition was obtained in the octane,where the mass ratio of the lipase and carriers dosage was 0.48,the molar ratio of methanol and cottonseed oil was 3:1,and the initial water content was about 1.25%(V/V),respectively.Under the pH of 8 and the temperature of 40℃,the conversion of biodiesel reached 65% in 24h.

Abstract:Biodiesel belongs to renewable energy and is a potential substitute for petrochemical diesel. In this study, ZnO/SnO 2 @halloysite heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared by loading semiconductor zinc oxide and tin dioxide on layered kaolin by the improved wet calcination method, which was used to photocatalytic the transesterification of castor oil and ethanol to produce biodiesel. TG-DTG, BET, XRD, UV–vis and SEM-EDS were used to characterize the composition, specific surface area, light absorption characteristics and photocatalytic performance of the samples. The reaction conditions were optimized by the Taguchi method. The optimum reaction conditions were as follows: catalyst dosage 4 wt%, molar ratio of ethanol to oil 12:1, reaction temperature 75 °C. After 2 h, the yield of biodiesel was 96.75 %. In the study of catalyst reusability, the yield of biodiesel is still above 85 % after being reused for 5 times. The kinetics of photocatalytic transesterification was studied, and the results accorded with quasi-first-order kinetics. The activation energy was 75.02 kJ/mol. Lastly, an eight-step reaction mechanism of photocatalytic transesterification was proposed. The prepared castor oil biodiesel can be prepared into B20 biodiesel through additives or mixing to meet ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 standards.

Abstract:Glutaraldehyde is chose to cross-bind Aspergillus niger Li-38 lipase on shell polysaccharide. The optimized condition is the concentration of glutaraldehyde 0.015% and reaction time 50min. The methanolysis of cottonseed biodiesel were carried out in tert-butanol solvent, with ration between methanol and oil 1:1, water content 0.6%, under the temperature of 55°C, using immobilized enzyme of 8%(w/w), and methanol adding in batch. The final conversion was 89.1% after 28h. The stability of immobilized lipase was improved. The activity has been kept up to 80% for 12d and 46.8% for 30d, storing in room temperature. It is stable at the range of temperature from 30 to 70°C, and pH 5.5 to 6.5. The immobilized lipase could be reused over 7 times, with the conversion ration over 80%.
