Abstract:With the rapid development of industry and the increasing demand for transportation, traditional sources of energy have been excessively consumed. Biodiesel as an alternative energy source has become a research focus. The most common method for biodiesel production is transesterification, in which lipid and low carbon alcohol are commonly used as raw materials, in the presence of a catalyst. In the process of transesterification, the performance of the catalyst is the key factor of the biodiesel yield. This paper reviews the recent research progress on homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in biodiesel production. The advantages and disadvantages of current homogeneous acid catalysts and homogeneous base catalysts are discussed, and heteropolyacid heterogeneous catalysts and biomass-derived base catalysts are described. The applications of the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyst derivatives ionic liquids/deep eutectic solvents and nanocatalysts/magnetic catalysts in biodiesel production are reviewed. The mechanism and economic cost of current homogeneous acid catalysts and homogeneous base catalysts are also analyzed. The unique advantages of each type of catalyst are compared to better understand the microscopic details behind biodiesel. Finally, some challenges of current biodiesel catalysts are summarized, and future research directions are presented. This review will provide general and in-depth knowledge on the achievements, directions, and research priorities in developing novel homogeneous/heterogeneous catalysts for the green and cost-effective production of biodiesel.

Abstract:Fatty acid esters derived from vegetable oil and animal fat have assumed importance as a raw material for chemical industry and a potential diesel fuel extender known as biodiesel.Transesterification is one of the most important methods of esters preparation from oil and fat.The latest advances in the preparation of fatty ester via homogeneous and heterogeneous basic catalysts,which include alkaline–earth metals,layered double hydroxide and molecular sieves,are reviewed.For the high acid value oil,“two steps transesterification ” and solid acid catalyst are discussed.The relationship between structure and catalysis of sulfonic fused ring compounds and meso-pore materials are analyzed.Many scientists are interested in lipase catalysts for their moderate reactive conditions and low contamination.Reducing the effects of short chain alcohol on the catalytic activity and increasing the conversion rate are the more important aspects.In the supercritical conditions,methanol and oil can react quickly and water is not harmful to the transesterification.In this work,the advantages and disadvantages of four methods are analyzed,and the research and development are discussed.

Abstract:Biodiesel is considered as one of the most promising alternative fuels due to the depletion of fossil fuels and the need to cope with potential energy shortages in the future. This article provides a thorough analysis of biodiesel synthesis, covering a variety of topics including oil feedstock, synthesis methods, catalysts, and enhancement technologies. Different oil feedstock for the synthesis of biodiesel is compared in the review, including edible plant oil, non-edible plant oil, waste cooking oil, animal fat, microbial oil, and algae oil. In addition, different methods for the synthesis of biodiesel are discussed, including direct use, blending, thermal cracking, microemulsions, and transesterification processes, highlighting their respective advantages and disadvantages. Among them, the transesterification method is the most commonly used and a thorough examination is given of the benefits and drawbacks of utilizing enzymatic, heterogeneous, and homogeneous catalysts in this process. Moreover, this article provides an overview of emerging intensification technologies, such as ultrasonic and microwave-assisted, electrolysis, reactive distillation, and microreactors. The benefits and limitations of these emerging technologies are also reviewed. The contribution of this article is offering a thorough and detailed review of biodiesel production technologies, focusing mainly on recent advances in enhanced chemical reaction processes. This provides a resource for researchers to assess and compare the latest advancements in their investigations. It also opens up the potential for enhancing the value of oil feedstocks efficiently, contributing to the development of new energy sources.

Abstract:The significance of producing biodiesel from animal and vegetable oil to the sustainable economy was stressed. The properties and standard as well as research advances and application of biodiesel in the world were introduced, and the methods for production of biodiesel by transesterification including homogeneous chemical catalysts, heterogeneous chemical catalysts, biocatalyst reaction and supercritical technology were reviewed. Moreover, the future prospects of biodiesel in China were pointed out.

Abstract:<p>Biodiesel is a green and renewable energy, which is supposed to be a promising substitute to fossil diesel. Normally, biodiesel is produced via transesterification/esterification with assistance of homogeneous or heterogeneous catalyst. However, homogeneous catalyst cannot be recovered and reused. In particular, the downstream purification is needed resulting in large number of wastewater. Thereby, heterogeneous catalysts are put forward to address these above problems. The catalytic activity of heterogeneous catalyst (alkaline, acid, and enzyme) is restricted by the active site dispersity, available active site amount, and catalytic stability. With regard to this, supporting active site on carrier is a feasible technology to improve catalytic performance. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a special class of coordination polymers, which are self–assembled by metal ion and organic ligand with topological structure. The promising merits of huge porosity, uniform pore size, controllable functional groups, and structural tenability of MOFs are highly desirable in synthesizing catalyst for transesterification/esterification. This paper reviews the current application of MOFs in catalyzing transesterification/esterification, which is involved with catalytic mechanism, MOFs types, especially the MOFs catalyst and MOFs derivate based catalysts. Meanwhile, the reusability of MOFs based catalyst are further analyzed. Thereafter, the effect of transesterification/esterification parameters on catalytic performance are comprehensively summarized. The future perspectives for MOFs application in biodiesel production are also discussed.</p>

Abstract:The excessive utilization of petroleum resources leads to global warming, crude oil price fluctuations, and the fast depletion of petroleum reserves. Biodiesel has gained importance over the last few years as a clean, sustainable, and renewable energy source. This review provides knowledge of biodiesel production via transesterification/esterification using different catalysts, their prospects, and their challenges. The intensive research on homogeneous chemical catalysts points to the challenges in using high free fatty acids containing oils, such as waste cooking oils and animal fats. The problems faced are soap formation and the difficulty in product separation. On the other hand, heterogeneous catalysts are more preferable in biodiesel synthesis due to their ease of separation and reusability. However, in-depth studies show the limited activity and selectivity issues. Using biomass waste-based catalysts can reduce the biodiesel production cost as the materials are readily available and cheap. The use of an enzymatic approach has gained precedence in recent times. Additionally, immobilization of these enzymes has also improved the statistics because of their excellent functional properties like easy separation and reusability. However, free/liquid lipases are also growing faster due to better mass transfer with reactants. Biocatalysts are exceptional in good selectivity and mild operational conditions, but attractive features are veiled with the operational costs. Nanocatalysts play a vital role in heterogeneous catalysis and lipase immobilization due to their excellent selectivity, reactivity, faster reaction rates owing to their higher surface area, and easy recovery from the products and reuse for several cycles.

The present review focuses on the transesterification reaction for biodiesel production as green energy applications with three types of catalysts (i.e., basic, acidic, and enzymatic), where the acidic and basic catalysts are further subdivided into heterogeneous and homogeneous categories. Heterogeneous catalysts excel in terms of activity, selectivity, water durability, and managing free fatty acids (FFAs). Under normal operating circumstances, base catalysts outperform the alternatives and create an adequate amount of products. However, raw materials with a high concentration of free FFAs cannot be used with these catalysts. The amount and strength of the acidic or basic sites determine how well the catalysts will perform under various operating conditions. Furthermore, this paper discusses the benefits of some heterogeneous catalysts, including mesoporous silica-based catalysts, which can be modified to function as either basic or acidic catalysts. Recent studies have shown that mesoporous silica can achieve excellent catalytic efficiency under normal operating conditions. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art of catalyst categories, discusses the difficulties inherent in the transesterification process, and gives technological options for implementing catalysis in a sustainable manner. Abstract:Catalysts play a significant role in transesterification of vegetable oils. Currently, chemical and biological catalysts are being investigated, and both have their inherent merits and demerits. In large-scale applications, these catalysts are expected to be cost effective and environmentally friendly. If the catalyst is homogeneous in its physical form it is more effective than is the heterogeneous catalyst, but its separation from the mixture is a major issue. Some of the heterogeneous catalysts suffer leaching in harsh reaction conditions. Of late, nanocatalysts that demonstrate high efficiency are being studed. Nanoparticles are used in biological catalysts as solid carriers for lipase immobilization. Lipase immobilized on magnetic nanoparticles has proved to be a versatile biocatalyst for biodiesel production. This article reviews the role of various catalytic systems commonly used in the transesterification reaction of oils in biodiesel generation.

Abstract:Depletion of oil reserves, increasing prices of petroleum products, and environmental concerns related to air pollution are the main driving forces for utilizing renewable energy resources to replace fossil fuels. Vegetable oils can be used to produce biodiesel. Biodiesel is obtained by transesterification of vegetable oil with alcohol using homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysts. Commercial homogeneous catalysts in the biodiesel production industry are facing challenges such as separation difficulties and severe corrosion which will lead to the increment of production and maintenance cost. Herein, this paper focuses on the comprehensive review of literature reported on the usage of heterogeneous catalyst used in biodiesel production. Compared to other commercial catalysts, the usage of heterogeneous catalyst possesses several advantages such as abundantly available, cheaper raw materials, reusable, non-toxic and biodegradable. Carbon material synthesized from biomass which acts as the efficient support for active sites due to its high porosity and surface area characteristic has been studied widely.

Abstract:Biodiesel is arguably an important fuel for compression ignition engine as far as sustainability and environmental issues are concerned. It can be produced from both edible and non-edible vegetable oils and animal fats. Owing to higher viscosity, the utilization of crude vegetable oil is not advisable as it results engine failure. For reducing the viscosity and improving the other fuel characteristics comparable to that of diesel fuel, different approaches have been developed. However, transesterification process is very reliable, less costly and easy method compared to other methods. Due to more free fatty acids content in most of the non-edible vegetable oils, a pretreatment is employed to convert the acids to ester, then transesterified with suitable alcohol. Primarily yield of biodiesel depends upon the molar ratio of oil/alcohol, reaction temperature, reaction time, amount of catalyst, type of catalyst, stirring speed. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are used for synthesis purposes. Heterogeneous catalysts are less costly, environmental benign and can be derived from natural resources. Enzymatic catalysts are more environmental benign than heterogeneous catalysts but are costly, which hinders its widespread research and utilization. This article reviews the results of prominent works and researches in the field of production of biodiesel via catalyzed transesterification process.

Abstract:Biodiesel is the main alternative to fossil diesel and it may be produced from different feed stocks such as semi refined vegetable oils, waste frying oils or animal fats. The new process technologies developed during the last years made it possible to produce biodiesel from recycled frying oils comparable in quality to that of virgin vegetable oil biodiesel with an added attractive advantage of being lower in price. Increasing number of researches focusing on the use of solid heterogeneous catalysts for the production of biodiesel provides evidence that these catalysts continue to evolve as viable alternatives. While liquid alkaline metal alkoxides remain to be appealing in the industries, it is expected that solid base catalyst will soon become more attractive due to the economics and environmental concern. Limited researches have shown that the conversion by solid base catalysts was comparable to that of the existing alkoxide system. In this review article various types of heterogeneous solid acids and bases in the production of biodiesel from trans-esterification of triglycerides and their yields and conversion from various catalytic systems are compared.

Abstract:Biodiesel has received tremendous attention as a sustainable energy source. This review presents an overview of various catalysts utilized in biodiesel production and compares their potential for producing biodiesel. Presented here are the excellent features of the various catalysts while highlighting their drawbacks. For instance, production of biodiesel with homogeneous base catalysts is easy but it can only be used with refined oils having low levels of free fatty acid (FFAs). When homogeneous acid is used in esterification, it causes reactor corrosion. Water and FFAs do not affect heterogeneous acid catalysts. Thus, transesterification of triglycerides into biodiesel and converting FFAs into biodiesel through esterification can be catalyzed more efficiently using a heterogeneous acid catalyst. Biocatalysts are also being used to produce biodiesel from oils with high FFAs. However, heterogeneous acid catalysts and biocatalysts are not suitable for industrial application due to serious mass transfer limitations. Biodiesel yield and conversion were compared over various catalysts in this paper. Also presented are the effects of different reaction parameters on biodiesel yield over different catalysts. The correct interplay of factors like reaction temperature, time, alcohol-to-oil molar ratio, and catalyst loading produces optimal process conditions that give the highest biodiesel yield.

Abstract:Biodiesel is one of the potential alternative energy sources that can be derived from renewable and low-grade origin through different processes. One of the processes is alcoholysis or transesterification in the presence of a suitable catalyst. The catalyst can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous. This article reviews various catalysts used for biodiesel production to date, presents the state of the art of types of catalysts, and compares their suitability and associated challenges in the transesterification process. Biodiesel production using homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis has been studied extensively, and novel heterogeneous catalysts are being continuously investigated. Homogeneous catalysts are generally efficient in converting biodiesel with low free fatty acid (FFA) and water containing single-origin feedstock. Heterogeneous catalysts, on the other hand, provide superior activity, range of selectivity, good FFA, and water adaptability. The quantity and strengths of active acid or basic sites control these properties. Some of the heterogeneous catalysts such as zirconia and zeolite-based catalysts can be used as both basic and acidic catalyst by suitable alteration. Heterogeneous catalysts from waste and biocatalysts play an essential role in attaining a sustainable alternative to traditional homogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production. Recently, high catalytic efficiency at mild operating conditions has drawn attention to nanocatalysts. This review evaluates state of the art and perspectives for catalytic biodiesel production and assesses the critical operational variables that influence biodiesel production along with the technological solutions for sustainable implementation of the process.

Abstract:Triglycerides are the main constituents of lipids, which are the fatty acids of glycerol. Natural organic triglycerides (viz. virgin vegetable oils, recycled cooking oils, and animal fats) are the main sources for biodiesel production. Biodiesel (mono alkyl esters) is the most attractive alternative fuel to diesel, with numerous environmental advantages over petroleum-based fuel. The most practicable method for converting triglycerides to biodiesel with viscosities comparable to diesel fuel is transesterification. Previous research has proven that biodiesel–diesel blends can operate the compression ignition engine without the need for significant modifications. However, the commercialization of biodiesel is still limited due to the high cost of production. In this sense, the transesterification route is a crucial factor in determining the total cost of biodiesel production. Homogenous base-catalyzed transesterification, industrially, is the conventional method to produce biodiesel. However, this method suffers from limitations both environmentally and economically. Although there are review articles on transesterification, most of them focus on a specific type of transesterification process and hence do not provide a comprehensive picture. This paper reviews the latest progress in research on all facets of transesterification technology from reports published by highly-rated scientific journals in the last two decades. The review focuses on the suggested modifications to the conventional method and the most promising innovative technologies. The potentiality of each technology to produce biodiesel from low-quality feedstock is also discussed.

Abstract:Biodiesel oil not only burns similarly to diesel oil from petroleum,but also is environmentally friendly and renewable.So it is an ideal substitute for diesel oil from petroleum.In this paper,several technologies of pyrolysis,transesterification and latest research achievements were reviewed,including chemical catalysis,enzyme catalysis and supercritical method for production of biodiesel oil.In order to reduce production cost of biodiesel oil,inexpensive materials,namely waste oils and fats,can be used as materials.For waste oils and fats with high acid value,the suitable environmentally friendly catalysts are solid acid and ionic liquid.

Abstract:The highly efficient procedure has been developed for the synthesis of biodiesel from vegetable oil and methanol. The KF/MgO has been selected as the most efficient catalyst for the reactions with the yield of 99.3%. Operational simplicity, without need of the purification of raw vegetable oil, low cost of the catalyst used, high activities, no saponification and reusability are the key features of this methodology.

Biodiesel, characterized by its renewability, low toxicity, and eco-friendliness, offers significant advantages over conventional diesel fuel. This study delves into the technical intricacies of biodiesel production methodologies, primarily utilizing the trans-esterification technique. Various biomass sources react with monohydric alcohols and catalysts, including nano-based, homogeneous heterogeneous, and biocatalyst options. The biodiesel synthesis process is dependent on critical factors like the free-fatty acid content, ethanol type and molar proportion to oil, catalysts type and concentration, reaction duration and temperature. Selecting suitable catalysts and feedstocks is critical and significantly influences production and economic analysis. This systematic review aims to comprehensively analyze recent advancements in biodiesel production, with a focus on diverse feedstocks, effective catalysts utilized in the process and offers a novel synthesis of current research on biodiesel production, focusing on diverse feedstocks and effective catalysts.
