Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:In this paper a flow of convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space by the linear combination of the mean curvature and the n-th root of the Gauss-Kronecker curvature is considered. It is proved that such deforming convex hypersurfaces converge to a round sphere in the Huisken's sense.

Abstract:Free-form deformation through the control of parametric surfaces is a flexible technique. With the old method objects to be deformed are embedded into the parametric space of the base surface directly and the undesired distortions are frequently introduced into the result. A homogeneous deformation method is proposed which successfully eliminates or alleviates the undesired distortion. The main difference between the proposed method and the existing methods is that the new one embeds objects into the parametric space of the base surface by isometric or locally isometric mapping using the planar development of the base surface as the intermediate medium, thus the object to be deformed can follow the shape of the base surface homogeneously. Implementation results indicate the potentials of the new approach.

Abstract:A new free-form deformation method is presented in this paper. The deformation of an object is achieved by attaching it to two parametric surfaces, namely the shape surface S(u, ν) and the height surface H(u, ν). A control point or vertex of the object is projected onto the shape surface along its normal and a correspondence between the point and its projection on the shape surface is established. The point is then embedded into the parametric space defined by the shape surface. By regarding the height surface as a displacement function, the directed distance from the sample point to its projection on the shape surface can be further adjusted. The proposed method is independent of the representation of the underlying object. Experimental results show that the method is intuitive, easy to control and fast to run.

Abstract:A hypersurface without umbilics in the n+1 dimensional Euclidean space is known to be determined by the Moebius metric and the Moebius second fundamental form up to a Moebius transformation when n>2. In this paper we consider Moebius rigidity for hypersurfaces and deformations of a hypersurface preserving the Moebius metric in the high dimensional case n>3. When the highest multiplicity of principal curvatures is less than n-2, the hypersurface is Moebius rigid. Deformable hypersurfaces and the possible deformations are also classified completely. In addition, we establish a Reduction Theorem characterizing the classical construction of cylinders, cones, and rotational hypersurfaces, which helps to find all the non-trivial deformable examples in our classification with wider application in the future.

In this paper, we study the convexity of algebraic curves and surfaces using the results on quasiconcave functions, and sufficient conditions are derived for the convexity of algebraic curve segments and surface patches.

Abstract:： To solve the surface deformation driven by skeleton curves for complex product shape design, the design methods by controlling the target surface deformation based on variation principle and diffusion effect are presented. The skeleton curves (e.g. ridge and valley lines) determining the surface geometric features of the product shape are extracted, the geometric shape of the skeleton curves are manipulated to deform under the given constraint conditions, and then the deformed skeleton curves are considered as the constraint conditions to control the variation trend of surface feature shape, therefore, the whole surface feature shape design is to be implemented effectively. Moreover, our methods helps to extract the original surface details represented by Laplace differential coordinate, then the surface geometric details can be essentially unchanged during the surface deformation process. The product surface deformation examples are presented to verify the effectives of our approach.

Abstract:Minimal surfaces with planar curvature lines are classical geometric objects, having been studied since the late nineteenth century. In this paper, we revisit the subject from a different point of view. After calculating their metric functions using an analytical method, we recover the Weierstrass data, and give clean parametrizations for these surfaces. Then, we show that there exists a single continuous deformation between all minimal surfaces with planar curvature lines. In the process, we establish the existence of axial directions for these surfaces.

Abstract:Geometry processing algorithms often require the robust extraction of curvature information. We propose to achieve this with principal component analysis (PCA) of local neighborhoods, defined via spherical kernels centered on the given surface Φ Intersection of a kernel ball B r or its boundary sphere S r with the volume bounded by Φ leads to the so-called ball and sphere neighborhoods. Information obtained by PCA of these neighborhoods turns out to be more robust than PCA of the patch neighborhood B r ∩Φ previously used. The relation of the quantities computed by PCA with the principal curvatures of Φ is revealed by an asymptotic analysis as the kernel radius r tends to zero. This also allows us to define principal curvatures "at scale r" in a way which is consistent with the classical setting. The advantages of the new approach are discussed in a comparison with results obtained by normal cycles and local fitting; whereas the former method somewhat lacks in robustness, the latter does not achieve a consistent behavior at features on coarse scales. As to applications, we address computing principal curves and feature extraction on multiple scales.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a definition of discrete conformality for triangulated surfaces with flat cone metrics and describe an algorithm for solving the problem of prescribing curvature, that is to deform the metric discrete conformally so that the curvature of the resulting metric coincides with the prescribed curvature. We explicitly construct a discrete conformal map between the input triangulated surface and the deformed triangulated surface. Our algorithm can handle the surface with any topology with or without boundary, and can find a deformed metric for any prescribed curvature satisfying the Gauss-Bonnet formula. In addition, we present the numerical examples to show the convergence of our discrete conformality and to demonstrate the efficiency and the robustness of our algorithm.

Abstract:Presented two methods to approximate several differential properties, including mean curvature, guass curvature, main curvatures and main directions on point-sampled surfaces. The first method transports voronoi cell and mixed finite-element/finite-volume on triangle mesh to point set. The second one uses moving least square(MLS) projection and fits a series of polynomial patch to the point set surface. Compareing our methods to the analytical results on parametric surfaces. Experiments show that the estimates are satisfying in accuracy.

Abstract:Dilational materials, for which the angles between pairs of material fibers are preserved under deformations, are an important class of metamaterials. Although these materials are typically made by assembling discrete elemental building blocks in repeating patterns, continuum mechanics provides a powerful tool for exploring their macroscopic properties and response. We present an analysis of the constraint, the constitutive relation, and the equilibrium equations for homogeneous and isotropic dilational elastic material surfaces. We also describe the possibility of penalizing deviations from local area preservation to yield a framework for approximating isometric deformations of unstretchable elastic material surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for computing conformal deformations in R 3 while minimizing curvature-based energies. Curvature-based energies serve as fundamental tools in geometry processing, essential for tasks such as surface fairing, deformation, and approximation using developable or cone metric surfaces. However, accurately computing the geometric embedding, especially for the latter, has been a challenging endeavor. The complexity arises from inherent numerical instabilities in curvature estimation and the intricate nature of differentiating these energies. To address these challenges, we concentrate on conformal deformations, leveraging the curvature tensor as the primary variable in our model. This strategic choice renders curvature-based energies easily applicable, mitigating previous manipulation difficulties. Our key contribution lies in identifying a previously unknown integrability condition that establishes a connection between conformal deformations and changes in curvature. We use this insight to deform surfaces of arbitrary genus, aiming to minimize bending energies or prescribe Gaussian curvature while sticking to positional constraints.

Abstract:Minimal surfaces are ubiquitous in nature. Here they are considered as geometric objects that bear a deformation content. By refining the resolution of the surface deformation gradient afforded by the polar decomposition theorem, we identify a bending content and a class of deformations that leave it unchanged. These are the bending-neutral deformations, fully characterized by an integrability condition; they preserve normals. We prove that (1) every minimal surface is transformed into a minimal surface by a bending-neutral deformation, (2) given two minimal surfaces with the same system of normals, there is a bending-neutral deformation that maps one into the other, and (3) all minimal surfaces have indeed a universal bending content.

Abstract:Functionals that penalize bending or stretching of a surface play a key role in geometric and scientific computing, but to date have ignored a very basic requirement: in many situations, surfaces must not pass through themselves or each other. This paper develops a numerical framework for optimization of surface geometry while avoiding (self-)collision. The starting point is the tangent-point energy, which effectively pushes apart pairs of points that are close in space but distant along the surface. We develop a discretization of this energy for triangle meshes, and introduce a novel acceleration scheme based on a fractional Sobolev inner product. In contrast to similar schemes developed for curves, we avoid the complexity of building a multiresolution mesh hierarchy by decomposing our preconditioner into two ordinary Poisson equations, plus forward application of a fractional differential operator. We further accelerate this scheme via hierarchical approximation, and describe how to incorporate a variety of constraints (on area, volume, etc.). Finally, we explore how this machinery might be applied to problems in mathematical visualization, geometric modeling, and geometry processing.
