Communication Technology and Gender:a Case Study of the Use of Cell-Phone by Migrating Domestic Women in Shanghai

Abstract:With an ethnographic analysis,this paper presents a case study of the cell-phone use by women from Anhui province working as an hourly-paid domestic worker in Shanghai. The article demonstrates how cell-phones play a key role in Chinese rural women' s adaptation to urban life today along with the marketlization and socialization of domestic service industry in China's metropolitans.In this process,domestic women left their children and swarmed into a distant and strange city with her husband.Living through worries and hopes,fears and wanderings everyday,they manage to monitor distantly their child's growing-up and to carry out mothering duties via cell-phone communications. This article also explores the issues of how the modern communication technology and marketlization relocate the class and gender position for migrating domestic women in the condition of urban and rural difference and areas divide in China in the 21st century.
