Abstract:Little is known about the breeding behavior and cause of egg loss in wild populations of the great crested grebe Podiceps cristatus . In 2021 and 2022, we studied the nest site selection of the grebe at the patch and nest site scales and monitored its breeding behavior using infrared cameras in the Caohai National Nature Reserve in southwestern China. Overall, 99 grebe nests were identified in patches of reedmace Typha angustifolia and burnt reed Phragmites australis . At the patch scale, negative binomial regression analysis revealed that the number of grebe nests was negatively correlated with vegetation cover and positively correlated with vegetation height. At the nest-site scale, binary logistic regression analysis revealed that offshore distance was positively correlated with nest presence. The mean clutch size was 4.11 ± 0.07 eggs (range = 3–6 eggs), and the incubation period was 23.13 ± 0.83 days (range = 20–26 days). When our boat approached the grebe nests, the flush distance decreased significantly with increasing incubation time. In particular, sharp decreases were observed at the end phase. Our camera recorded four previously unreported adult grebe behaviors: (1) seldom resting at night, (2) removing empty eggshells as the eggs hatched, (3) feeding nestlings with down feathers up to 1/3 of the total feeding frequency, and (4) yawning. Pecking by other waterbirds or lack of hatchability were the main reasons for egg failure. Artificially controlling the water level and implementing aquatic vegetation conservation measures are important means of maintaining the habitats of the breeding populations of the great crested grebe and other waterbirds in Caohai. Additionally, restoring traditional net fishing is conducive to maintaining ecological balance.
