Technological Learning——A Conceptual Framework of Evolution of Firm's Technological Capabilities

Abstract:This paper develops a conceptual framework for understanding the determinants of the learning processes involved in developing technological capabil- ities at firm level in emerging markets.Technological capabilities refer to the integrated knowledge,skills and resources required to generate and manage tech- nology acquisition,improvement and creation.Tech- nological learning is the cognitive process leading to the acquisition of those capabilities.Technological ca- pabilities can be acquired at three levels of advance- ment:imitative,adaptive and innovative. Imitative refers to the capacity of copying available technology, adaptive refers to the capacity of adapting available technology to local circumstances and innovative in- volves the capacity to develop new products and processes.Technological learning processes involve the integration of knowledge from three different sources,individual into organizational,tacit into codi- fied and external into internal. The integration of these three sources results in four types of learning processes:external knowledge acquisition,internal knowledge acquisition,knowledge codification and knowledge socialization.The determinants of these learning processes include:scanning efforts;intensity of communication;investment in R&D,human re- sources and training;use of project management tech- niques and an innovative culture.
