Abstract:With increasing awareness of the importance of thermal comfort, occupants, even those living in a mild climate, show rising demand for space heating. The question remains which heating system has a better environmental performance when it is utilized to meet moderate heating need. This paper presents a comparison of distributed and centralized heating systems with respect to the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions. The heating systems are sized for a typical apartment in Hangzhou, China, where daily average low temperature is above 0°C. Results show that air-source heat pump renders lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to centralized heating.

Abstract:The application of solar water heating system is getting popular in recent years. However, in many of the cases, the concept of incorporate design has not been put into consideration, which leads to unreasonable combination of the building and the SWH system. This paper focuses on the incorporate design of SWH system in small high residential building in northern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, P.R.China, aiming to put forward proper method and suggestion of it. The study is elaborated with a project to be built in the city of Guilin. With the help of the project, the setting of solar heat collection parameter, the choice of solar heat collector, the design of heat collective system and the construction of SWH system will be discussed. The effect and evaluation of the incorporate design between building and the SYH system will also be mentioned. The paper also expects to be of help to the design and construction of SWH system in other regions in China.

Abstract:The SWH system, which refers to solar water heating system, is getting popular in recent years. Despite the wide range of application, the incorporate design of SWH system with high-rise residential building stays problematic due to the lack of comprehensive design and calculation system, there is much to be improved in terms of programming, system and parameter selection, calculation system and the management of the SWH system. This paper mainly discusses the principle of design and calculation of SWH system, a real high-rise residential building project in the city of Guilin is set as an example .With the help of it, the design of SWH system in the stage of blueprint, the selection of hot water system and climate data, the calculation method of SWH system, and the importance and necessity of using monthly-based data to design the SWH system will be elaborated in detail. This paper also expects to be helpful to the construction of other SWH projects in China.

Abstract:Aseries of questionnaire survey on condition of winter heating of residential building and field measure of typical cases were launched in Hangzhou. The characteristics of winter energy utilization in Hangzhou were found out through analyzed the survey data. In addition to air conditioning other heating devices are also important in Hangzhou which is a typical city in hot summer and cold winter zone. Moreover as high as 98%dwelling houses have air-conditions but in the winter the number of dwellinghouse did not open air-conditioning account for about 1/3-1/2. Combined with the analysis of the measured data of typical cases can concluded that winter air conditioning use rate and time lengthper day are not high. It also shows that in the hot summer and cold winter area air conditioning is more important for summer cooling.

Abstract:There exists huge differences in climatic conditions and occupant energy-consuming behavior between Berlin and the "hot summer and cold winter zone of China" (HSCW), which implies that the building energy consumption compositions of two regions are completely different. In this paper, dynamic energy consumption simulation for passive houses with Design Builder software was performed. The results indicated that the improvement of building airtightness and exterior wall insulation can reduce annual heating and cooling load effectively, and more importantly the effect is much stronger on heating load than cooling load. Because of this, the paper proposed that the ratio of heating and cooling electricity consumption (r) should be adopted as an important index in energy efficiency evaluation of passive houses. It would contribute to the reasonable selection of ventilation modes and the exterior wall heat transfer coefficient, and benefit the healthy development of passive houses in HSCW.

Abstract:Large amounts of actual measured meteorological data of 20 typical cities in hot summer and cold winter zone in China between 1971 and 2003 were analyzed.There exist wide differences in climatic conditions among cities in this climate region, as reflected in many aspects like the average temperature and diurnal range in coldest(hottest) month, the number of days in which the daily average temperature was less than or equal to 5 ℃ (higher than or equal to 25 ℃), the heating and cooling degree day, etc.The reasonability of calculation periods set by three existing relevant standards in China was investigated, and a new defining method of calculation period was proposed based on actual measured meteorological data and discreteness analysis.The results of energy consumption simulation for residential buildings with the Design Builder software indicate that different calculation periods not only affect the total heating and cooling consumption simulation result, but also change the ratio of them.

Abstract:Energy consumption in residential buildings accounts for a large portion of global energy use. Understanding residential building load characteristics is important in both the design and technical suitability analysis of residential air conditioning systems in terms of energy efficiency and carbon reduction. However, most current research mainly focuses on the load characteristics of individual buildings and not on the variation in load characteristics of building aggregation. In addition, the load characteristics of building aggregations vary with the building scale; however, most studies have compared those of buildings under a certain scale, and the change with the increase in building scale is still unclear. The main purpose of this study is to explore load characteristic differences among residential buildings of different scales and the impacts of those differences on HVAC system design. Based on the monitoring data collected in a residential district in Zhengzhou, China, we analyzed the load characteristics among different households and combinations of different numbers of households from the variation in peak load, total consumption and load distribution, as well as the daily load volatility. We indicate that the load characteristics of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems of different scales should be considered in the design and operation stage.

Abstract:In China, increasing attention is being dedicated to residential heating issues in the hot summer and cold winter (HSCW) climate zone because of rising living standards. One particular issue that is still under discussion is whether district heating should be developed in this region. This study provides a brief summary of the status of residential heating in the HSCW climate zone and characterizes its key features. Two local surveys involving 1800 questionnaires were taken during the winters of 2013 and 2014, and 48 households were used as case studies. In the case studies, the energy consumption of each heating device was measured and the temperature and CO2 concentrations in each room were monitored over one heating season. A number of families (371) were also asked to measure the temperature and CO2 concentrations of their households during the 2013 survey. Through this investigation, several conclusions were reached. 1) Energy used for heating in this region is still low; the cost is around 1.5 RMB/m(2) and the use of electricity is around 3 kWh(E)/m(2) (one-tenth of the district heating average in north China). 2) Indoor thermal environments need to be improved. The typical indoor temperatures were around 12 degrees C in unheated homes and around 15 degrees C in heated homes. 3) The use of heating devices in this region is intermittent and partial, and a variety of devices is used. 4) The behavior of occupants is the main factor that causes differences in heating-related energy use in the HSCW region. Analysis of Load Diversity in China Residential Districts and its Influence on District HVAC System Design

Abstract:District heating and cooling (DHC) systems have become increasingly popular in recent years in China and all around the world due to their high equipment efficiency and the capability of using community-scale renewable energy sources. From the perspective of energy use and urban landscape, district cooling systems have great potential value. However, in China, most of the district cooling systems have not performed at their optimal efficiencies. According to some measurement results, a large amount of existing systems that are not performing at optimal efficiencies are oversized. Oversized systems lead to wasted investment, low operational efficiency anti thus, waste of energy. To this end the thermal load demands of building users in a district need to be accurately understood. In contrast to a single house or a residential building, a district has tens or hundreds of households with varying thermal demands. Spatial and temporal diversity of various households results in different features of central supply load form individual household. In order to analyze the characteristic differences among systems with different scales (e.g., household air conditioner, central DHC system serving tens of apartments, central DHC system serving hundreds of apartments), we collected the household hourly loads from the smart meters in one residential district in Zhengzhou, China for quantitative analyses, which has a central ground source heat pump system to supply the cooling and heating for the three high-rise buildings. Then, we compared the load analyzed the thermal load diversity among combinations of different number of households based on real data from the variation of peak loads, total thermal consumptions and load distributions, as well as the load volatility in typical day. Finally, we also discussed the impact of load characteristics in DHC systems on district HVAC system sizing.

Abstract:As heating requirements continue to evolve and heating technology advances, radiators and radiant floor heating devices, which require different supply-water temperatures, have gradually become the two main heating terminals in district heating systems. However, the primary return-water temperature of current solutions based on heat exchangers and heat pumps is relatively high and fails to recover waste heat from the combined heat and power plants, owing to improper use of heat sources. To address this issue, a heat exchanger network optimisation method—the thermal energy discretisation and matching method—was used to design a dual-temperature water district heating system consisting of two absorption heat pumps and two heat exchangers. The primary supply water flows through the two generators, two heat exchangers, and two evaporators of the absorption heat pumps. The radiator and floor heating return water was divided into two parts and heated by the heat exchanger and the absorber and condenser of the absorption heat pump, respectively. The performance of the designed heating station was evaluated using the coefficient of performance and the primary return-water temperature and compared with that of other district heating systems. The changes in the district heating system's configuration when the boundary conditions changed were investigated. Results showed that (1) the designed system based on thermal energy discretisation and matching method -had the lowest primary return-water temperature of 18.8 °C and the highest coefficient of performance of 5.62. (2) When the low-temperature load ratio changed from 0% to 100% while maintaining a constant total load, the system's form changed regularly. (3) When the primary supply-water temperature increased, the heating station's form remained unchanged and the capacity of the heat exchange equipment changed regularly. (4) When the secondary supply and return-water temperatures increased, the evaporation temperature of the absorption heat pump increased, resulting in a change in the system's form. This study provides valuable insight into the design of district heating systems that supply dual-temperature water under various design conditions.

Abstract:In recent years, Northern China suffers severe winter haze, which is attributed to extensive residential coal combustion for warm in winter. Chinese government presented proposals of the electrical energy substitute of the fossil fuels to solve the problem. However, the wide applications of electric heating utilities expose the reliability of the electrical grids on the production and transmission side particularly in extreme cold days. In this paper, we studied heating loads and electric load behaviors of an air source heat pump of a case-study suburban residential building of Beijing, China in wintertime in 2016. Firstly, we choose three characteristic days for heating loads analysis, i.e. the coldest, the warmest, and the medium day. Secondly, heating loads of the case-study building were calculated by a building energy simulation program, which is based on a coupled weather data and the building energy transfer. Hourly heating loads of the case-study building in the three characteristic days were studied based on the weather analyses. Thirdly, the electric load behaviors of the air source heat pump used for room heating were investigated. The COP of the heat pump under different operating conditions was calculated. The peak loads and the electric load fluctuations of the heat pump in wintertime were analyzed. This work provided a valuable database on heating loads and electric loads for warm in suburban area in Beijing, so as to help to achieve the electric grid safety.

Abstract:The increasing demand for improving indoor thermal environment in the hot summer and cold winter climate zone (HSCW) in the Yangtze River region in China poses enormous challenges in terms of energy policy and design solutions for this unique region. A comprehensive understanding of people's habits and behaviors involving winter heating is imperative for decision making for urban heating infrastructure investment strategies that significantly impact the decarbonization of heating. However, there are little studies of a large-scale survey to gain such knowledge acrose the region. The aim of this study is to develop a rigorous survey method in order to obtain reliable data for analysis. Five municipal/capital cities across the upper, middle and downstream Yangtze River were surveyed based on 30 randomly generated locations in each city. A total of 8481 valuable samples were obtained in the survey conducted in the winter from November 2017 to March 2018. It is revealed that air conditioning/air source heat pumps are the predominant systems, accounting for 63% and 58% for bedroom and living room heating respectively. The use patterns of heating are diverse featuring 'part-time-part-space' systems in accordance with the occupancy patterns. There is significant evidence of the habit of opening a window to provide a gap for fresh air irrespective of whether the heating is in use. Two-step cluster analysis is employed to subdivide occupants' heating-related behaviors into three clusters to characterize households. This study fills the knowledge gap of winter-heating-related behaviors. The research outcomes will benefit building energy simulations for energy prediction and help policy makers making decisions on providing strategic guidance in terms of winter heating solutions in this region. Survey and heat demand analysis of winter residential indoor environment in Shanghai

Abstract:Shanghai locates in the non-central heating area of China.The current part-time and part-space free-running heating mode formed in residential building is the reason why energy consumption for heating is still at a low level.Investigates the energy consumption of 224 residences which use air source heat pump air-conditioners for heating.Meanwhile,surveys the indoor thermal environment and comfort in two group of 10 residences each respectively using air source heat pump air-conditioners and gas boiler plus floor radiant heating system.The results show that the residents can improve the thermal comfort by using heating equipment,while the heating energy consumption remained at a very low level and the indoor environment is worse under the current free-running heating mode.The energy consumption will significantly increase with the increasing usage of full space heating equipment,at the same time,the change of heating mode will gradually change the thermal adaptation of the residents,which will bring about the opportunities and challenges of industry development.

Abstract:Space heating energy consumption in urban residential areas of the hot summer and cold winter zones (HSCW) in China has increased dramatically during the last decade. Large-scale surveys and in-depth measurements of residential heating consumption is important to monitor trends. More importantly, a macro energy model that reflects the current status and that can be used to analyze future scenarios is needed. In this paper, a bottom-up model was established, and the results show the total energy consumption in the HSCW and the influences of building envelops, heating equipment efficiency, and especially occupant behavior on energy use. Related technical and policy suggestions were analyzed in different scenarios. Presently, energy consumption for heating in urban residential areas of the HSCW is relatively low, but is increasing rapidly, so the establishment of superior national building energy efficient designs requires attention. The findings suggest that the district heating network would not be feasible for the HSCW and decentralized heating should be the major heating method employed. Besides building efficiency, appliance efficiency should also be improved. Lastly, residents' behaviors in regards to the opening of windows can significantly influence energy use and should be carefully considered by policy makers and engineers.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the climate features,energy resources and environment capacity of Lhasa city,states that passive and active solar energy heating modes should be prioritized with bio-energy heating and power driven air-source heat pump heating as auxiliaries in Lhasa city,making it be a real solar city and a demonstration city for renewable energy application.For lack of natural gas,any kind of heating techniques driven by natural gas is not suitable for local resource and environment situation except decentralized domestic gas boiler.Discusses the feasibility and economics of solar heating and bio-energy heating techniques and the relevant policy needed for realizing the target of the solar city.
