Abstract:This study was carried out in order to assess several modifications of carbon nanotube-based nanomaterials for their applications in laccase electrodes and model biofuel cells. The modified MWCNTs served as adapters for the immobilization of laccase from Catenuloplanes japonicus VKM Ac-875 on the surface of electrodes made of graphite rods and graphite paste. The electrochemical properties of the electrodes were tested in linear and cyclic voltammetrical measurements for the determination of the redox potential of the enzyme and achievable current densities. The redox potential of the enzyme was above 500 mV versus NHE, while the highest current densities reached hundreds of μA/cm2. Model biofuel cells on the base of the laccase cathodes had maximal power values from 0.4 to 2 μW. The possibility of practical application of such BFCs was discussed.

Carbon Nanotube-Hydroxyapatite Nanocomposite: A Novel Platform for Glucose/O-2 Biofuel Cell

Abstract:This study demonstrates a novel carbon nanotubes-hydroxyapatite (CNTs–HA) nanocomposite-based compartment-less glucose/O2 biofuel cell (BFC) with the glucose oxidase (GOD) as the anodic biocatalysts and the laccase as the cathodic biocatalysts. CNTs–HA nanocomposite prepared by the self-assembly method via an aqueous solution reaction has been used as the co-immobilization matrix to incorporate biocatalysts, i.e. GOD and laccase successfully. Moreover, the three-dimensional configuration of the CNTs–HA films electrode would be advantageous to the glucose oxidation on the bioanode and O2 electroreduction on the biocathode of BFC. The maximum power density delivered by the assembled glucose/O2 BFC could reach 15.8μWcm−2 at a cell voltage of 0.28V with 10mM glucose. The results indicate that the CNTs–HA nanocomposite is believed to be very useful for the development of novel BFC device.

Abstract:Laccases exhibit a wide range of applications, especially in the electrochemical field, where they are regarded as a potential biotic component. Laccase-based biosensors have immense practical applications in the food, environmental, and medical fields. The application of laccases as biocathodes in enzymatic biofuel cells has promising potential in the preparation of implantable equipment. Extensive studies have been directed towards the potential role of fungal laccases as biotic components of electrochemical equipment. In contrast, the potential of prokaryotic laccases in electrochemistry has been not fully understood. However, there has been recent and rapid progress in the discovery and characterization of new types of prokaryotic laccases. In this review, we have comprehensively discussed the application of different sources of laccases as a biocatalytic component in various fields of application. Further, we described the potential of different types of laccases in bioelectrochemical applications.

Abstract:One-dimensional multimetallic nanotubes with meso-porous walls are promising electrocatalysts for fuel cells on account of their distinct morphology and tunable composition. In the present work, we adopt a micelle-assisted galvanic replacement strategy to synthesize one-dimensional mesoporous AgPdPt nanotubes (AgPdPt MNTs) with uniform morphology and size in aqueous solution. On account of their distinct mesoporous nanotube structure and synergistic effect among different metals, the as-synthesized trimetallic AgPdPt MNTs exhibit enhanced catalytic performance toward the oxygen reduction reaction. This work offers a feasible method to design one-dimensional mesoporous nanotubes with tunable composition for various promising applications.
Preparation of Fe/N Double Doped Carbon Nanotubes from Lignin in Pennisetum as Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysts for Zinc–Air Batteries

Abstract:Obtaining high value-added products from renewable lignocellulosic biomass is very attractive but still a major challenge. The underutilization of lignin for a high value is considered one of the main obstacles. Herein, we report Fe/N double doped carbon nanotubes with a hollow structure prepared by pyrolysis of an Fe–lignin complex and dicyandiamide. Fe/N double doped carbon nanotubes are expected to replace Pt-based catalysts as efficient, low-cost, and sustainable non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in zinc–air batteries. The Fe/N double doped carbon nanotubes as catalysts exhibited good ORR activity with a half-wave potential and onset potential of 0.846 and 0.972 V, respectively, which is comparable to the ORR performance of the state-of-the-art 20% Pt/C catalyst, and the catalyst also has good stability. The primary zinc–air batteries of this catalyst exhibit a high open-circuit voltage, and its good stability ensures that the zinc–air batteries assembled with this catalyst can still maintain high performance during long-term discharge. The enzymatic effect of the cellulosic material obtained by pretreatment in this work is substantially enhanced, and the use of the isolated lignin for the preparation of polyatomically doped catalysts and for zinc–air batteries makes this work demonstrate an integrated biorefinery strategy. Abstract:The conversion of biomass into high-performance carbon-based materials provides an opportunity to valorize biomass for advanced applications. Achieving this necessitates requires dedicated efforts and innovations in biocarbon synthesis, design, and applications. This study proposes the controllable conversion of biomass-derived cellulose into well-distributed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by tuning the precipitation of cellulose pyrolysis generated vapors with in-situ formed ferric metal nanoparticles. The obtained CNTs exhibited lawn-like 3D architecture with similar length, uniform alignment, and dense distribution. The combined use of ferric chloride and dicyandiamide as the reagents with a mass ration of 0.162:1.05, demonstrated optimal performance in controlling the morphology of CNTs, enhancing the graphitization, and increasing the content of graphitic-N and pyridine-N. This multi-dimensional modification enhanced the electrocatalytic performance of the obtained CNTs, achieving an onset potential of 0.875 V vs. relative hydrogen electrode (RHE), a half-wave potential of 0.703 V vs. RHE, and a current density of −4.95 mA cm −2 during the oxygen reduction reaction. Following microbial fuel cells (MFCs) tests achieved an output voltage of 0.537 V and an output power density of 412.85 mW m −2 , comparable to MFC with Pt/C as the cathode catalyst. This biomass-derived catalyst is recommended as a high-quality, non-noble metal alternative to traditional noble-metal catalysts.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction is an essential reaction in several energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and batteries. So far, the best performance is obtained by using platinum-based electrocatalysts, which make the devices really expensive, and thus, new and more affordable materials should be designed. Biomass-derived carbons were prepared by hydrothermal carbonization in the presence of carbon nanotubes with different oxygen surface functionalities to evaluate their effect on the final properties. Additionally, nitrogen functional groups were also introduced by ball milling the carbon composite together with melamine. The oxygen groups on the surface of the carbon nanotubes favor their dispersion into the precursor mixture and the formation of a more homogenous carbon structure with higher mechanical strength. This type of structure partially avoids the crushing of the nanotubes and the carbon spheres during the ball milling, resulting in a carbon composite with enhanced electrical conductivity. Undoped and N-doped composites were used as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. The onset potential increases by 20% due to the incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nitrogen, which increases the number of active sites and improves the chemical reactivity, while the limiting current density increases by 47% due to the higher electrical conductivity.

Abstract:Recently, carbon nanomaterials have received great interest because of their unique mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties. Especially, some kinds of novel carbon materials including carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, and graphene with large specific area, high conductivity, and good biocompatibility become research focus. These novel carbon nanomaterials have been applied in many fields due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Especially, carbon nanomaterials have shown their unique advantages in electrochemical field. This paper mainly review the application of carbon nanomaterials to electrochemistry including biosensor, supercapacitor, and fuel cell. Carbon nanomaterials have an important role in bioelectrochemical catalytic reaction due to that carbon nanomaterials have high specific area and excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, it can improve the electron transfer rate of enzyme. The biosensors based carbon nanomaterials have high sensitivity, broad linear range, and good stability and reproducibility. Carbon nanomaterial is the earlist and the best one in the supercapacitor electrode, materials. The supercapacitor prepared by carbon nanomaterials has good cycle stability. The specific capacitance can be enhanced through the combination of carbon nanomaterials and pseudo-capacitors electrode materials. Carbon nanomaterials can act as the catalysts of fuel cell as well. It can improve the energy density, fuel utilization, and the ability to resist poisoning.

Abstract:Lignin is an ideal carbon source material, and lignin−based carbon materials have been widely used in electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, and other fields. To investigate the effects of different lignin sources on the performance of electrocatalytic oxygen reduction, different lignin−based nitrogen−doped porous carbon catalysts were prepared using enzymolytic lignin (EL), alkaline lignin (AL) and dealkaline lignin (DL) as carbon sources and melamine as a nitrogen source. The surface functional groups and thermal degradation properties of the three lignin samples were characterized, and the specific surface area, pore distribution, crystal structure, defect degree, N content, and configuration of the prepared carbon−based catalysts were also analyzed. The electrocatalytic results showed that the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction performance of the three lignin−based carbon catalysts was different, and the catalytic performance of N−DLC was poor, while the electrocatalytic performance of N−ELC was similar to that of N−ALC, both of which were excellent. The half−wave potential (E1/2) of N−ELC was 0.82 V, reaching more than 95% of the catalytic performance of commercial Pt/C (E1/2 = 0.86 V) and proving that EL can be used as an excellent carbon−based electrocatalyst material, similar to AL.

Abstract:This study demonstrates a new kind of miniature glucose/O2 biofuel cells (BFCs) based on carbon fiber microelectrodes (CFMEs) modified with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). SWNTs are used as a support both for stably confining the electrocatalyst (i.e., methylene green, MG) for the oxidation of NADH and the anodic biocatalyst (i.e., NAD+-dependent glucose dehydrogenase, GDH) for the oxidation of glucose and for efficiently facilitating direct electrochemistry of the cathodic biocatalyst (i.e., laccase) for the O2 reduction. The prepared micro-sized GDH-based bioanode and laccase-based biocathode exhibit good bioelectrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of glucose and the reduction of oxygen, respectively. In 0.10M phosphate buffer containing 10mM NAD+ and 45mM glucose under ambient air, the power density of the assembled miniature compartment-less glucose/O2 BFC reaches 58μWcm−2 at 0.40V. The stability of the miniature glucose/O2 BFC is also evaluated.

Abstract:Laccase was produced by heterologous expression of gene lacc6 from Pleurotus otreatus HAUCC 162 and then employed as an efficient catalyst to increase the kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction in a liquid flow fuel cell (LFFC). An electron transport chain (ETC) was constructed in the LFFC with Ag2O as an anode electrocatalyst and 2,2 '-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and laccase as the cathode electron mediators. The LFFC could well convert furfural to furoic acid with co-generation of electricity. Under the optimized cathodic conditions of 40 degrees C, pH 4.0, 50 mM ABTS, and laccase loading of 300 U/mmol ABTS, a P-max of 70.8 mW/cm(2) could be obtained. For furoic acid production, a 91% yield could be obtained under the anodic condition of 100 mM furfural and 1.5 M KOH. The electrons released from the oxidation of furfural on the Ag2O catalyst could be well transferred to that external circuit with a Faraday efficiency of 96.2%. This work thus can provide a novel route for clean production of biomass-based chemicals and electricity by a combination of chemical, electrochemical, and biological processes.

Abstract:A facile and reliable method has been developed to synthesize nanohybrids of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles-decorating carbon nanotubes (CNTs@TiO2). The nanohybrid displays a unique feature of having CNTs encapsulated inside and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles coating on the CNT surface. Comprehensive characterizations suggest that CNTs@TiO2 nanohybrids exhibit unique properties of CNTs and TiO2 nanoparticles with one-dimensional structure, excellent electrical conductivity, high surface area, and good biocompatibility. The electrochemical properties of CNTs@TiO2 nanohybrids were systematically investigated, it was revealed that the CNTs@TiO2 nanohybrids showed great promise as anode materials of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Compared with pure TiO2 nanoparticles and CNTs alone, CNTs@TiO2 nanohybrids exhibited a much higher output current, power density, and Coulombic efficiency when used as anode materials of MFCs. The as-developed synthetic route opens up a new avenue for designing CNTs-based nanohybrid materials for various applications benefiting from the synergetic effect among constituents.

Abstract:In this work, we report our recent efforts in developing carbon nanotube cross-linking MOF-derived Fe/N/C catalysts as oxygen reduction electrocatalysts for fuel cell. It is witnessed that the carbon nanotube cross-linking strategy can effectively improve the activity and stability of fuel cell, which can be assigned to its fast and convenient electron conduction channels offered by loosely cross-linked carbon nanotubes. The results of 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy show that there are three spin states of Fe-N4 structure in the material, of which low-spin state D1-FeIIN4 and high-spin state D3-N-FeN4 are both considered to be the main active sites of oxygen reduction reaction. For fuel cell, high performance of 0.732 A cm−2 at 0.7 V is reached. The novel cross-linking catalyst sheds light on the development of non-precious metal catalysts for fuel cells.

Direct Electrochemistry of Electrode Modified with Thin Film of Laccase Immobilized in Nano-Composite of Polyaniline-CoC2O4

Abstract:Electrochemical methods including cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectrometry and chronoamperometry, together with auxiliary means such as F-T infrared spectrometry, Ultra-violet visible spectrometry, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and atomic adsorption spectrometry were used to characterize the chemical composition, structure and morphology of polyaniline-CoC2O4 nano-composite, to measure the change of conductivity in nano-composite before and after Laccase immobilization and to investigate the direct electrochemistry of redox protein molecules entrapped in the matrix. Its catalytic effect on oxygen reduction reaction and performance as electrochemical sensor for oxygen detection were evaluated subsequently. Results from tests indicated this Laccase-based electrode shuttled electrons from enzyme active site T-2 as primary electron acceptor to dioxygen molecules attached chemically in the matrix, achieving the electro-reduction of O-2 in the absence of any external mediator with its apparent electron transferring rate: 0.017 s(-1). This lactase-based electrode displayed favorable catalytic effect on oxygen reduction reaction (onset potential for catalysis: 460 mV vs NHE, apparent turn-over frequency for oxygen reduction reaction: 2.6 x10(-4) s(-1)). Enzymatic oxygen electro-reduction into water should be ascribed to the key process to promote the performance of biocathode. This Laccase based electrochemical sensor had such advantages as extremely low detection limit (0.20 mu mol.L-1) to oxygen monitoring, wide linear responding range of concentration (0.4 similar to 7.5 mu mol.L-1) and high affinity towards substrate (K-M=122.4 mu mol.L-1).

Abstract:Nano-complex consisting of Titanium dioxide and graphene oxide via covalent bonding was proposed to be Laccase immobilization matrix through collaborative effect of chemical tethering and adjacent complexation between TiO2 and Laccase molecule. Geometrical feature, structural characteristics and physio-chemical properties of nano-composite with Laccase entrapment were systematically characterized and evaluated. Influences of mutual interactions between element of nano-complex and incorporated protein molecule on kinetics of electro-catalysis and efficiency of photo-electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction of Laccase based electrode were quantitatively analyzed. Results from measurements indicated mutual interactions dominated by adjoining ligation would lead to irregular arrangement of protein molecules on the surface of enzyme carrier and decrease the orderliness of nano-complex with Laccase anchoring with improved hydrophilicity. The combination of Laccase with P25 in nano-complex via the static quenching would enhance the utilization efficiency of external illumination with the crippled band gap (Eg) in the indirect mode (∼1.43 eV for nano-composite with Lac integration). Such combination would alter the route of charge transferring which meant the redox site in TiO2 would play the role of primary electron acceptor and T1 site in coordination with TiO2 of integrated Laccase could perform the duty of intra-molecular electron mediator (apparent heterogeneous electron shuttle rate: 2.6 × 10−3 s−1). Electro-catalytic performance on oxygen reduction for Laccase based electrode was limited by the step of substrate diffusion (in the form of free state and entrapment into nano-complex: 2.9 × 10−4 and 1.8 × 10−6 s−1, respectively). As-prepared Lac case based electrode displayed favorable sensing performance to its substrate-dissolved oxygen: high affinity (KM: 46.4 μmol•L−1), moderate detection limit (0.34 μmol•L−1) and enhanced sensitivity (0.021 μA•L•μmol−1).

Abstract:Abstract Ferrocene groups introduced polyethylenimine was adsorbed onto multi‐wall carbon nanotubes attached carbon cloth before crosslinking via glutaraldehyde to develop an enzyme electrode (anode) for biofuel cell applications. Glucose oxidase was covalently immobilized onto this electrode by leftover aldehyde groups on the surface. The apparent Michaelis constant of immobilized enzyme was measured as approximately fivefold higher than that of the free enzyme. Thermal stability of immobilized enzyme was improved as estimated. Activity half‐life of the immobilized glucose oxidase was determined as approximately 8 times longer than that of the free one; 2.4 mA/cm 2 electrical current was obtained by using this electrode by forming a basic biofuel half‐cell. Abstract:Abstract Presently, one of the most important aspects for the development of enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) is to synthesize the novel electrode materials that possess high current density, low open-circuit voltage (OCV) and long-term stability. To achieve the above attributes, lots of new strategies are being used by the researchers for the development of advanced materials. Nowadays, nanomaterials and nanocomposites are the promising material that has been utilized as effective electrode material in solar cells, supercapacitors and biofuel cells application. Herein, we account for a novel electrocatalyst as electrode material that comprised ZnO nanoparticles decorated on the surface of polyindole (PIn)-multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), for the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme and mediator (Ferritin). The PIn-MWCNT scaffold is prepared via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of indole on the surface of MWCNT and assessed by myriad techniques. The micrograph of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) designated the interconnected morphology of MWCNTs in the polymer matrix. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), confirm the crystallinity and different functional groups available in the synthesized material, respectively. The electrochemical assessment demonstrates that the ZnO/PIn-MWCNT/Frt/GOx nanobiocatalyst exhibits much higher electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of glucose with a maximum current density of 4.9 mA cm −2 by consuming 50 mM glucose concentration in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) (pH 7.4) as the testing solution by applying 100 mVs −1 scan rates. The outcomes reflect that the as-prepared ZnO/PIn-MWCNTs/Frt/GOx biocomposite is a promising bioanode for the development of EBFCs.

Oxidative Catalytic Depolymerization of Lignin into Value-Added Monophenols by Carbon Nanotube-Supported Cu-Based Catalysts

Abstract:Lignin valorisation into chemicals and fuels is of great importance in addressing energy challenges and advancing biorefining in a sustainable manner. In this study, on the basis of the high microwave absorption performance of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a series of copper-oxide-loaded CNT catalysts (CuO/CNT) were developed to facilitate the oxidative depolymerization of lignin under microwave heating. This catalyst can promote the activation of hydrogen peroxide and air, effectively generating a range of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Through the application of electron paramagnetic resonance techniques, these ROS generated under different oxidation conditions were detected to elucidate the oxidation mechanism. The results demonstrate that the •OH and O2•− play a crucial role in the formation of aldehyde and ketone products through the cleavage of lignin Cβ-O and Cα-Cβ bonds. We further evaluated the catalytic performance of the CuO/CNT catalysts with three typical lignin feedstocks to determine their applicability for lignin biorefinery. The bio-enzymatic lignin produced a 13.9% monophenol yield at 200 °C for 20 min under microwave heating, which was higher than the 7% yield via hydrothermal heating conversion. The selectivity of G-/H-/S-type products was slightly affected, while lignin substrate had a noticeable effect on the selective production. Overall, this study explored the structural characteristics of CuO/CNT catalysts and their implications for lignin conversion and offered an efficient oxidation approach that holds promise for sustainable biorefining practices.
