Feasibility of unenhanced spiral CT scans with low dose in diagnosing the lithiasis of urinary system

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the feasibility of unenhanced spiral CT scans with low dose in diagnosing the lithiasis of urinary system.Methods Thirty patients with acute lumbar-flank and abdomen pain or clinically suspected lithiasis of urinary system underwent spiral CT scans with routine and low dose.The scanning procedures were performed by the section of 10 mm and overlapping reconstruction of 1 mm.Results All patients whose CT findings seen on routine and low dose scans were evaluated and compared by two experienced radiologists.The spiral CT scans with low dose detected 35 stones of urinary system in 30 patients,the diagnostic sensitivity and accuracy were 100% and 96.5%,respectively.Conclusion Spiral CT scan with low dose is a safe and sensitive modality in the diagnosis of lithiasis of urinary system,especially in comparising with routine dose scan,it could significantly reduce the radiation dose received by patients.
