Abstract:Ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) antenna sensors are used extensively for partial discharge (PD) detection to diagnose insulation systems subjected to high dV/dt voltage waveforms, e.g., inverter-fed motors. Through frequency spectrum analysis and appropriate high-pass filtering, it is possible to remove the voltage source interference and reliably detect PD activity; however, it is still unclear whether the frequency content of the signals gathered is representative of the PD or of the sample under test, acting as a transmitting antenna. In this paper, a high-frequency electromagnetic simulation software is used to estimate the emission features of turn-to-turn insulation sample models. The radiation characteristics of samples with different lengths and types are analyzed and compared with experimental data. The results show that with an increase in the length of the insulation model, both the simulated resonant frequency and the frequency spectrum of the PD signal shift to lower frequencies. The influence of the change in the angle of the insulating sample on the frequency spectrum of the PD was negligible. It can be concluded that the radiation performance of the insulating sample as a transmitting antenna affects the PD time-frequency spectrum distribution characteristics released by the test sample. In a hairpin motor stator, the lowest peak of the PD spectrum is predicted correctly by the simulated S11 response of the winding. The structural parameters of the equipment under test determine the radiation characteristics. The results can provide a basis for the frequency-domain analysis of PD, which is conducive to the extraction of characteristic parameters of PD signals and will improve the identification accuracy of PD defect types.
