Abstract:This paper introduces the influence of inorganic materials,such as crystal whisker,graphite intercalation compound, silicon micro-powder,nano silicon dioxide,titanium dioxide and zinc borate,on the fire-retardant performance,film quality and other physical and chemical performances of ultrathin fire-retardant coatings for steel structure;and points out that synthesized inorganic materials of appropriate amount can effectively modify traditional fire-retardant coatings,improving every performance index of ultrathin fire-retardant coatings for steel structure.

Abstract:A water based ultra-thin fire resistive coating for steel structure was researched. The coating was coated on I40b I-beam with APP as the main flame retardant and titanium dioxide as filler. The full-scale fire resistance test was carried out according to the China standard GB 14907-2002. The results shows that the resistive of the water based steel structure fire resistive coating can reach 1.2h when the thickness is about 2mm. Related research shows that water based steel structure fire resistive coating can be used as an effective fire-resistant material for steel structure.

Abstract:The effects of the composition of resins, the ingredient ratio of fire-retardant P–C–N system and the type of filler (or pigment) on the fire retardancy of coating were studied by burning the small panels those were previously covered with fire-retardant coatings. An ultrathin fire- retardant coating for exterior steel construction was successfully developed via the optimization of the coating formulation and the combination with a homemade inorganic top-coating material. A fire-retardant time of 96 min was achieved at a coating thickness of 1.5 mm, which has passed the test by the National Fire-proof Test Center.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to study the efficiency and effect of different intumescent flame-retardant formulations on the performance of steel in the event of a fire. The formulations are based on flame-retardant additives into which silica fume (SF) as a binder and chicken eggshell (CES) as a flame-retardant filler have been incorporated to synthesize water-based intumescent coatings. The influence of binder and filler on the properties and fire-resistive performance of the coatings were investigated by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), small scale Bunsen burner test and furnace test. TGA results showed that by adding SF alone or in combination with CES, the residual weight and thermal stability of the coatings were increased, while showing improved surface structure in the SEM images. The combination of SF, CES and flame retardant additives showed the best fire protection performance with the highest thermal stability, greatest expansion and densest surface structure while having sufficient adhesion to remain in place during fire exposure.

Abstract:Fire resistance of steel structures is crucial to building safety to maintain structural integrity and avoid secondary damage (building collapse), when facing fire hazards. High temperature in fire rapidly softens the steel structure which fails to afford the load bearing. Water-based intumescent coating is now one of the most prospective treatments as it is excellent fire resistant, environmentally friendly, and economically effective. However, the poor density and thermal stability of its char residue make it difficult to be competent in a real fire. In this work, an organic-modified glass fiber grafted with 10-(2, 5-dihydroxyphenyl)-10-hydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide and γ -(2, 3-epoxypropoxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (ODOPB@KH560@GF) was prepared as the filler for the intumescent fire-resistant coating containing ammonium polyphosphate/melamine/pentaerythritol (APP/MEL/PER) and water-based acrylic latex. The ODOPB@KH560@GF was found to enhance the thermal stability of the char layer and decrease the peak heat release rate and total heat release by 60.5 % and 58.8 % in a dosage of 5 wt % (AL-4). Also, the fire resistance limit of the steel plate coated with AL-4 was twice as high as that of the unprotected steel plate and higher than that of the steel plate coated with the commercial one, leading to further applications in the fire safety coating for steel structures.

Abstract:Graphene (GR) was used as filler to improve the performance of fire resistance, thermal stability, smoke suppression of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant coating. The influence of graphene (GR) on the properties of the intumescent fire-retardant coating was studied by fire protection test, TGA, SEM and smoke density test. The results showed that the GR can effectively enhanced the performance of fire resistance and thermal stability of the coating. The result of SEM test indicated the coating with GR had excellent intumescent effect and enhanced foam structure. The smoke density test of the coating demonstrated the coating contain GR had excellent performance of smoke suppression.

Abstract:The invention relates to a water-borne ultrathin intumescent fireproof and anticorrosive double-function coating for a steel structure and a preparation method thereof. Water-borne epoxy emulsion and self-crosslinking silicone-acrylic emulsion are used as a film forming substance, ammonium polyphosphate with high degree of polymerization, melamine and pentaerythritol are used as a fireproof auxiliary system, titanium pigment, sepiolite and alumina silicate fiber are added as a high temperature resisting filler, and expandable graphite flake is specially added as a fireproof and anticorrosive filler, and simultaneously, small amount of film forming auxiliary and water-borne antifoamer are added. The formed fireproof coating has high intumescence rate (as high as about 15 times), the limit of fire resistance up to 90 minutes (the thickness of the coating is 2mm), and excellent anticorrosive property simultaneously. The preparation method of the coating is simple, pollution-free, low in cost and wide in application.

Abstract:A phosphoru-nitrogen intumescent flame retardant (SCF101) consisting of acid source, carbon source and gas source, was synthesized by phosphoric acid, phosphorus pentoxide, pentaerythritol and melamine (MA). TGA and SEM results showed that decomposition temperature range of SCF101 was from 100°C to 700°C, and the residual char yield ratio was 30-40%, and the char layer was uniform and compact. As a substitute of traditional flame retardant, namely, ammonium polyphosphate (APP), melamine (MA) and pentaerythritol (PER), the SCF101 used in fireproof coatings of steel structure can improve residual char yield about 10%. The gasoline blowtorch experiments showed that the foam expansion of the coating containing SCF101 was higher, and char layer structure was compact and continuous, while the coating containing APP, MA and PER can not foam uniformly and the foam was cracked under the action of flame.

Abstract:The main aim of this study was to determine key factors that regulate fire-retardant effectiveness of intumescent coatings comprising of ammonium polyphosphate, melamine, pentaerythritol, polymer binder. Fulfillment of the research objectives resulted in the development of a coating with R120 fire resistance. The expected service life of the coating is at least 15 years when applied at Z2 type of environmental conditions (indoor use). It was established that in order to provide fire resistance of around R30 it is advisable to use the styrene-acrylic polymers as binders for both water-based and organic-based intumescent systems. The ratio of target components ammonium polyphosphate/melamine/pentaerythritol in such systems should be close to 2/1/1. The coating thickness is to be 0.4-0.5 mm. To achieve higher fire resistance (R60 or more) the coating should include a vinyl acetate derivative as a binder (copolymers with ethylene or vinylversatate). Target components ratio in this case is to be close to 3.5/1/1.5, while the coating thickness should be kept at 1.6-1.8 mm. If the required class of fire resistance is above R120, coating thickness is usually to be kept above 3.5 mm. In order to achieve higher fire resistance, it is advisable to use nano-clay additives and reinforcing fibers in intumescent compositions. The obtained results were used in the development of intumescent coating, which is produced industrially and provides over R120 fire resistance of steel, which was confirmed in standardized full-scale fire tests.

Abstract:Intumescent paints are specially formulated reactive coatings designed to swell or expand into thick foamed char upon exposure to heat, protecting the substrates against fire by insulation and providing a protective barrier to heat and mass transfer. The present review describes some recent work related to the development of intumescent fire protective coating that is suitable for the protection of non-flammable substrates, such as structural steel, against fire. The key factors in the intumescent formulations, binders, flame retardants, fillers, modifiers, nano-dimensional additives, and weathering that affect the properties and performance of intumescent coatings are described. An attempt has also been made to describe different fire protection methods and testing characterizations involved in the fire protection of structural steel using intumescent fire-resistant coatings.

Abstract:Recently, the exposed shortcomings of steel structures containing collapse at high temperature, severe corrosion phenomenon and susceptibility to pollution have gradually restricted their widespread applications in the significant fields of national economy. Aimed at overcoming these crucial problems, this paper was inspired by the superhydrophobic phenomenon on the surface of lotus leaves that the environmental and multifunction-integrated coatings with concave-convex scale-like micro-nanostructures were fabricated via one-step spraying method. Among the chemical composition of coatings, epoxy resin (EP) and silicone resin (SR) can act as the composite binders with good adhesion and hydrophobicity for attaching the fillers to the substrates. And the fillers composed of cyclodextrin-based flame retardant (MCDPM) and expandable graphite (EG) will exert the bidirectional action in fabricating the rough surface microstructure and enhancing the fire resistance of coatings. The results have revealed that as-prepared coatings exhibit low-adhesion super-hydrophobicity with the water contact angle (WCA) of 153.9° and the water sliding angle (WSA) of 8° that will induce a series of excellent performance in self-cleaning and corrosion resistance. In addition, good chemical stability and environmental durability have been simultaneously achieved for superhydrophobic coatings. Most of all, the exceptional fire protection ability of the designed coatings has been verified. Accompanied by the advanced formation of dense, continuous and high-yield char layers, the backside temperature of coated steel plate has been reduced to 269 °C during 1 h fire burning tests, which is far less than the critical collapse temperature of bare steel structure. Accordingly, compared to EP/SR coatings, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release rate (THR) of the EP/SR-3 coatings are decreased by 68.8% and 96.6%, interpreting the intensified fire safety of coated steel structure. And the potential condensed flame-retardant mechanism has been further inferred and illustrated by systematically analyzing the combustion residue. Consequently, this paper has explored a straightforward route to address the issues of multiple defects for steel structures that extend the in-depth application in real-world fields.

Abstract:Due to their ability to prevent or slow the spread of fires, fire-retardant coatings are utilized as the main means of fire protection for steel structures, combining easy application and high economic efficiency. This study investigates the effects of the particle size and dosage of expanded vermiculite (EV) on the fire resistance and application performance of coatings. Ammonium polyphosphate, melamine, and pentaerythritol were used as intumescent fire-retardant systems, along with waterborne hydroxyl-modified acrylic resins as the film-forming substances. The properties of fire resistance coatings were tested via scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and cone calorimetry. The excellent fire performance of the coatings with 3 wt.% 300-mesh EV was proven, exhibiting a relative expansion of 30.43 times. Moreover, the surface structure of the charcoal layer was dense. The total smoke production (TSP) and smoke concentration (TSR) were only 0.18 m2 and 0.25 m2/m2.

Abstract:The combination of epoxy emulsion and self-crosslinked silicone acrylate (SSA) emulsion was used as mixed binder for preparing water-borne intumescent fire resistive coating. The influences of binders on the properties and char formation of the coatings were investigated in detail by using thermogravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), rheological measurement, fire protection test and anticorrosion property test. It was found that the fire protection and foam structure of the coating was significantly improved by adding 14% SSA (by mass). The TG results showed that adding SSA increased the residue weights of the coatings. The XRF results demonstrated that anti-oxidation of the coatings was improved by adding SSA into the mixed binders. The results of anticorrosion property test indicated that the anticorrosion property of the coatings was enhanced with increase of content of SSA.

Abstract:Glass flake (GF) was used as a modifier to improve the fire protection and water resistance of waterborne intumescent fire resistive coating. The influences of GF on the properties of the coatings were investigated in detail by using TGA, XRD, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), SEM and fire protection test. The TGA results proved that addition of GF could enhance the anti-oxidation of the char layers and increase the residue weights of the coatings. The XRF results indicated that anti-oxidation of the coatings modified by GF was improved. The SEM images demonstrated that addition of GF could improve the foam structure of the coatings. After immersed in water over 600h, the results showed that the thermal stability and fire protection of the coating without GF were significant decreased, but the coatings modified by GF could still maintain the excellent intumescent effect and fire protection.

Abstract:The application of biomass materials in engineering has received a great deal of attention. In this work, a new eco-friendly biomass-based intumescent coating, composed of natural and sustainable biomass humic acid (HA), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), melamine (MEL), and zinc borate (ZB), was developed to endow steel structures with excellent fire resistance and fire retardancy. When exposed to a butane torch, the intumescent coating (1.5 mm thickness) reduced the maximum temperature observed on the backside of a 3 mm thick steel plate by over 350 °C. Moreover, the cone calorimeter results showed that thanks to the formation of an extremely intumescent and dense char layer, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) of intumescent coatings (S5) were reduced by 86 % and 61 %, respectively, as compared to that of the control epoxy coating, meanwhile, significant reductions in fire growth rate (FIGRA, −89 %) and maximum average rate of heat emission (MARHE, −86 %) were also observed, suggesting that 2 wt% ZB loading is required to achieve optimal level of fire resistance and fire retardancy. Furthermore, the mechanism of action was elucidated by SEM-EDX, FTIR, Raman, and XRD analyses. Results revealed that the combination of APP, MEL, HA, and ZB promoted the formation of a continuous and cohesive graphitized intumescent char layer on the surface of the steel plate, reinforced by borophosphate and zinc-containing species, which effectively prevents the transfer of heat and fuel, thereby enhancing the fire resistance and fire retardancy of the intumescent coating. This eco-friendly intumescent coating provides a strategy for developing new green fire protection systems using widely available, low-cost biomass materials without using hazardous ingredients.

Abstract:Intumescent fire-retardant coatings, which feature thinner layers and good decorative effects while significantly reducing heat transfer and air dispersion capabilities, are highly attractive for fire safety applications due to their effective prevention of material combustion and protection of materials. Particularly, the worldwide demand for improved environmental protection requirements has given rise to the production of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings, which are comparable to or provide more advantages than solvent-based intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings in terms of low cost, reduced odor, and minimal environmental and health hazards. However, there is still a lack of a comprehensive and in-depth overview of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings. This review aims to systematically and comprehensively discuss the composition, the flame retardant and heat insulation mechanisms, and the practical applications of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings. Finally, some key challenges associated with waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings are highlighted, following which future perspectives and opportunities are proposed.

Abstract:Intumescent coating (IC) is one of the famous protection systems for steel structures in the event of fire. Over the last few decades, ICs have been gaining much attention because they are applied on steel structure as fire protection. Upon exposure to flame, the coatings burn and swell, forming a heat shield called char. The formed char plays a critical role in protecting the steel substrate from the sudden rise in temperature which in return maintains the structural integrity of steel. In view of the importance of ICs, especially to the oil and gas sector, this paper reviews recent work on materials used for coatings and processing techniques for IC formation. The paper also gathers the latest information that focuses on ICs' main binders, flame retardant additives, and fillers. Finally, important issues in regard to durability and reliability of coatings in different environments are also highlighted.

Abstract:It is an effective passive fire protection method for the steel structure by painting fireproof coatings. Here, a feasible strategy for enhancing the fire resistance of steel structures is proposed. Specifically, a kind of adhesive composite sheet based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), polyhedral oligomeric octaphenylsilsesquioxane (OPS), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and sodium silicate was constructed and named as Sheet-Ti/Na. The as-prepared Sheet-Ti/Na exhibited excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression performance. In addition, the Sheet-Ti/Na can firmly adhere to the steel plate through hot pressing and adhesive bonding methods, acting as a non-traditional fireproof "coating". This feasible coating method can effectively enhance the fireproof and thermal insulation of the steel plates under the action of the hydrocarbon fire at about 1100 °C. After testing, the char layer of Sheet-Ti/Na can still firmly adhere to the steel plate without any detachment or cracking. Finally, a ceramic-like reaction among TiO 2 , APP, OPS and sodium silicate to generate pyrophosphates (TiP 2 O 7 and SiP 2 O 7 ) was clarified. The thermal insulation, flame retardancy and smoke suppression mechanisms of the Sheet-Ti/Na system also were stated. This work offers a promising strategy for rapidly and efficiently preparing fireproof and thermal insulation "coatings" for steel structures.
