Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To assess the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) in preventing the relapse of detoxified heroin users in a period of 12 months.METHODS:A total of 164 rehabilitating heroin users in Shanghai area were recruited after compulsory detoxification treatment for a period ranging from 3 months to 3 years. The TEAS was executed by the device named Han's acupoint nerve stimulator (HANS). The patients were treated with HANS for at least 3 months. All the subjects were then followed up for one year and relapse was monitored by monthly heroin/morphine urinalysis.RESULTS:Of 164 rehabilitating former heroin addicts, 53 remained drug-free at the end of 12 months observation period as judged by negative urinalysis while 35 become relapsed as documented by positive urine tests. The rest 76 dropped off due to various reasons and were all counted into the category of "relapsed". Thus, our data indicated 32.3% rehabilitating heroin users could stay sober for at least one year, which is significantly higher than the existing reports that less than 5% detoxified abusers would stay drug free for one year with no further intervention. No obvious correlation was found between the susceptibility of relapse and the duration of compulsory detoxification.CONCLUSION:Compared to the existing literatures, our results indicate that HANS could produce a marked decrease of the relapse rate of rehabilitating heroin users after compulsory detoxification.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of heroin on male sexual function. Methods The sexual function and the sex hormones of 91 male heroin addicts were studied. Results Decrease in sexual fantasy and sexual desire, letdown of sexual climax and decrease in the rate of sexual intercourse were observed in 91 male addicts. Decrease in serum testosterone(T), prolactin(PRL) (Z=2.094,P0.05;Z=2.086,P0.05), and increase in serum luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) (Z=2.094,P0.05;Z=2.086,P0.05) were observed in male addicts compared with the norm, however, the levels of estradiol (E2) had no statistical difference with the norm. Conclusion he function of hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis and gonadal function of males were possibly damaged by heroin.
Long-term Results after Deep Brain Stimulation of Nucleus Accumbens and the Anterior Limb of the Internal Capsule for Preventing Heroin Relapse: an Open-Label Pilot Study.

Abstract:Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is currently used to treat addiction, with the nucleus accumbens (NAc) as one promising target. The anterior limb of the internal capsule (ALIC) is also a potential target, as it carries fiber tracts connecting the mesocorticolimbic circuits that are crucially involved in several psychiatric disorders, including addiction. Stimulating the NAc and ALIC simultaneously may have a synergistic effect against addiction. Methods: Eight patients with a long history of heroin use and multiple relapses, despite optimal conventional treatments, were enrolled. Customized electrodes were implanted through the ALIC into the NAc, and deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment began two weeks after surgery. The patients were followed for at least 24 months. The duration of drug-free time, severity of drug cravings, psychometric evaluations, and PET studies of glucose metabolism before and after DBS were conducted. All adverse events were recorded. Results: With DBS, five patients were abstinent for more than three years, two relapsed after abstaining for six months, and one was lost of follow-up at three months. The degree of cravings for drug use after DBS was reduced if the patients remained abstinent (p < 0.001). Simultaneous DBS of the NAc and ALIC also improved the quality of life, alleviated psychiatric symptoms, and increased glucose metabolism in addiction-related brain regions. Moreover, stimulation-related adverse events were few and reversible. Conclusions: Simultaneous DBS of the NAc and ALIC appears to be safe, with few side effects, and may prevent long-term heroin relapse after detoxification in certain patients. Factors Associated With Relapse Among Heroin Addicts: Evidence From A Two-Year Community-Based Follow-Up Study In China

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Many countries including China are facing a serious opiate dependence problem. Anti-drug work effectiveness was affected by the high relapse rate all over the world. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing heroin addict relapse, and to provide evidence for generating relapse prevention strategies. METHODS:A community-based follow-up study was conducted in China between October 2010 and September 2012. A total of 554 heroin addicts in accordance with the inclusion criteria from 81 streets in 12 districts of Shanghai, China were divided into 4 groups: group 1--daily dosage taken orally of 60 mL of methadone or under combined with psychological counseling and social supports (n = 130); group 2--daily dosage taken orally of over 60 mL of methadone combined with psychological counseling and social supports (n = 50); group 3--JTT (Jitai tablets) combined with psychological counseling and social supports (n = 206); group 4--JTT combined with social supports (n = 168). RESULTS:Log-rank test results showed that the cumulative relapse rate differences among four groups during the two-year follow-up period were not statistically significant (χ² = 5.889, p = 0.117). Multivariate Cox regression analysis results showed that only three independent variables were still statistically significant, including compliance with participation in psychological counseling (OR = 3.563, p = 0.000), the years of drug use (OR = 1.078, p = 0.001)and intervention model. CONCLUSIONS:Using the detoxification medications combined with appropriate psychological counseling and social support measures will help improve the effectiveness of relapse prevention, which is a kind of alternative community detoxification pattern. Appropriate and standard psychological counseling is very important for anti-drug treatment. The longer the drug addiction lasts, the longer the anti-drug treatment takes.
EFFECTS OF 2/100 HZ HAN'S ACUPOINT NERVE STIMULATOR ON OPIOID ADDICTS IN COMMUNITY-BASED REHABILITATION

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the effect of 2/100 Hz HANS on opioid addicts under community-based rehabilitation(CBR).Methods:One hundred and fifty-four opioid addicts under CBR were randomly divided into two groups to receive either transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation(HANS)or Mock-HANS for 12 months.Observation items included treatment retention rate,percentage of opioid-positive urine sample,protracted abstinence symptoms scores and opioid craving scores.Results:(1)At the end of 9th month,all patients in Mock-HANS group had dropped out,while 48.7% patients in HANS group kept in treatment;43.6% patients in HANS group persisted to the end of the 12 month study.HANS group had higher treatment retention rate than Mock-HANS group(P<0.001).(2)For total percentage of opioid-positive urine samples,Mock-HANS group and HANS group were 78.3% and 51.2%,respectively(P<0.001);for percentage of opioid-positive urine sample each month,except for 1st,3rd month,HANS group had lower percentage of opioid-positive urine samples than Mock-HANS group(P<0.05).(3)In Mock-HANS group,protracted abstinence symptom scores before and after treatment were 14.7±s 3.2 and 13.6±s 2.7,respectively,while in HANS group the scores decreased from 15.7±s 4.3 to 11.5±s 3.1.By statistics,there was significant difference between the two groups(P<0.001).(4) In Mock-HANS group,opioid craving scores before and after treatment were 39.1±s 12.6 and 37.8±s 10.4,respectively,while in HANS group the scores decreased from 38.1±s 10.2 to 28.5±s 7.3.There was also significant difference between the two groups(P<0.001).Conclusion:Patients received HANS treatment have higher treatment retention rate than those received Mock-HANS;transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation could relieve patients' protracted abstinence symptoms and opioid craving,and reduce their percentage of opioid-positive urine samples.
[Effect of 2/100 Hz Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation on Sexual Dysfunction and Serum Sex Hormone of Heroin Addicts].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effect of 2/100 Hz electrical stimulation produced by Han's acupoint nerve stimulator (HANS) in treating heroin induced sex dysfunction.METHODS:Thirty-three heroin addicts were randomly divided into 2 groups to receive either buprenorphine (BPN group, n = 16) or HANS plus small dose of BPN (HANS group, n = 17) for 14 days. The doses of BPN were tailored according to individual requirement that could totally abolish withdrawal syndrome. The frequency of HANS was 2 Hz and 100 Hz shifting automatically, each lasting for 3 seconds. The stimulation was applied to 8 acupoints, the Hegu and Laogong of one upper limb, Neiguan and Waiguan of another limb, Sanyinjiao and Xingjian of both lower limbs, for 30 min. The therapy was carried out 3-4 times per day in the initial two weeks of treatment, and reduced to 1-2 times per day in the following 2 weeks.RESULTS:(1) The urine analysis for morphine in both groups turned to negative 14 days after treatment. (2) After 2 weeks of treatment, the composite score (Visual Analog Scale, VAS) of sexual function in HANS group showed a 102% increase (P < 0.01) compared with before treatment and was 107% of that in the BPN group (P < 0.01). (3) After 4 weeks treatment the serum concentration of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) in the HANS group showed a 137% and 118% increase respectively compared with those before treatment (P < 0.05), and the level of LH was 79.6% of that in the BPN group (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:The 2/100 Hz transcutaneous electrical stimulation produced by Han's acupoint nerve stimulator could improve the recovery of sexual function and raise the serum concentration of LH and T in heroin addicts.
Preventing Relapse in Incarcerated Drug Users in Yunnan Province, China.

Abstract:Introduction and Aims. The mainstay of drug control in China is compulsory incarceration and detoxification, but relapse rates following release are very high. The aim of the study was to explore factors which would help prevent relapse in injecting drug users following release from detoxification centres. Design and Methods. Semi-structured interviews were carried out at three compulsory detoxification centres in Derhong prefecture, Yunnan Province, which has the highest proportion of injecting drug users in China. Results. Interviews were completed with 235 men and 125 women aged between 15 and 64 years. They had been injecting heroine for between 3 months and 25 years; the median number of times of previous compulsory detoxification was four, with 11% having undergone this more than 10 times. All but six wanted to quit permanently, but almost all acknowledged that relapse on release was almost inevitable. The month immediately following release was identified as most vulnerable time for relapse. Respondents identified three measures which would help decrease the rate of relapse. First, the environment of the detoxification centres should emphasise support and counselling rather than punishment. Second, families should be provided with support to help the user immediately after release. Third, arrangements could be made to help those individuals who request relocation, to find work elsewhere away from accustomed drug-using social networks. Discussion and Conclusions. While a combination of these measures could help in some way to reduce rates of relapse following detention, given the failure of the detoxification/detention regimes to reduce drug use, consideration must be given to other approaches. Epidemiological Study on the Relapse of 282 Heroin Addicts

Abstract:Objective To study the relapse etiology of heroin addicts and analyse the effects of social,psychological and physical factors on relapse.Methods Heroin using,relapse after detoxification and main factors affecting relapse were fully investigated in 282 heroin addicts by using RFDA-16 Questionnaire.Results Protracted Syndromes(81.9%) and insomnia(75.5%) are main physical factors of relapse;Relief from disturbance(39.0%),boredom(34.4%) and desire for last use(32.6%) are main psychological factors of relapse;Peer influence(43.3%) and returning to original milieu(33.7%) are main social factors.Discussion Psychological rehabilitaion of heroin addicts,reinforcement in administration of heroin addicts after detoxification,and establishment of comprehensive rehabilitation mechanism in families and communities are all important means in preventing relapse.Additional attention should be paid in drug prohibition education among youths.
The efficacy of a relapse prevention programme in the treatment of heroin dependence in China

Abstract:Objective A relapse prevention programme (RP) for heroin addicts was designed and its short-term efficacy was assessed in China. Methods A control study was carried in a labour camp to assess the efficacy of a relapse prevention programme for heroin dependence by using the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-efficacy Scale (SE) and Self-esteem Scale (SES). Results Significant improvements in scores on the SAS, SE, and SES were found in the RP group after the relapse prevention training compared with those in the control group (7.85±6.20 vs 1.07±5. 42, 3.88±3.60 vs 0.08±2.89, 3.83±3.31 vs 0.78±2.55). Compared with the control group, the relapse rates in the RP group were lower than in the LC group (63% vs 83%), and they had more improvements in ASI scores (0.59±0.75 vs 0.06±0.60) at 3-month follow-up. Conclusions The RP is effective in decreasing the anxiety, improving the self-efficacy and self-esteem of heroin addicts. The RP is effective in decreasing the relapse rate and promoting the rehabilitation of heroin dependence. It is emphasised that relapse prevention and other psychosocial intervention are an important component in the drug abuse treatment. [Key words] Heroin dependence, relapse prevention, efficacy

Abstract:Over the last four decades, there has been an increasing interest in acupuncture treatment of substance abuse around the world. Three important steps can be identified in this field. Dr. Wen of Hong Kong was the first (1972) to report that acupuncture at four body points and two ear points combined with electric stimulation can relieve opioid withdrawal signs in the addicts. The second major step was made by Dr. M. Smith in New York, the head of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) of the United States, who finalized a protocol (1985), using only ear points without electric stimulation for the treatment of cocaine dependence. The recent advance in this field was made by Dr. Han of the Peking University, Beijing, who characterized a protocol (2005), using electric stimulation of identified frequencies on body points to ameliorate heroin withdrawal signs and reduce relapse of heroin use. In this chapter, the efficacy of acupuncture and related techniques for the treatment of drug dependence in experimental settings and clinical practice will be reviewed, and the possible mechanisms underlying this effect be discussed.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the general situation and related factors of relapse among opiate after detoxification treatment and to explore intervention methods for relapse prevention.Methods:1085 opiate who had the experience of relapse after detoxification completed theQuestionnaire on Relapse for Opiate addicts in five areas of Kuming,Yichang,Zhuhai/Zhongshan,Beijing and Shanghai.Results:Among 1085 questionnaires,1065 were eligible questionnaires(98.2%).The mean age of 1065 opiate was 35.1 a±s 7.1a,and their mean time of drug abuse was 10.9 a±s 4.4 a.The most vulnerable time for relapse was within five days(40.2%) when they returned to the community after detoxification treatment.The average value of four related factors physiological factor,psychological factor,pharmacological and social factor were 720.8,1003.0,1019.5 and 1059.0,respectively,showing statistical significance(χ2=881.8,P0.001).The social was the most important factor,which induced relapse after detoxification treatment among opiate in five cities.Conclusion:This survey indicates that social support and psychological intervention are effective measures for preventing opiate from relapse.

Abstract:RATIONALE:Drug-related cues can elicit approach responses in drug users. However, no relevant research has ever concerned heroin abusers. In the present study, we investigated whether the abstinent heroin abusers demonstrated special behavioural tendencies to approach or avoid the drug-related stimuli compared with neutral stimuli.METHOD:Twenty-two male abstinent heroin abusers (AH) and 20 healthy males (NC) were tested by a Pull/Push Task. Participants pulled (approach response) or pushed (avoidance response) a lever in response to the content of stimulus pictures (i.e. heroin-related versus neutral). The approach and avoidance scores were therefore calculated based on response times and directions to reflect their behavioural tendencies.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Relative to the NC individuals, the AH individuals demonstrated significantly heightened tendencies to approach ("pull") the heroin-related stimuli in comparison with the neutral stimuli, while their tendencies to avoid ("push") the heroin-related stimuli were marginally blunted, reflecting a special bias for AH individuals to behaviourally approach, and simultaneously resist to avoid, heroin-related cues.
A 1-Year Follow-Up Study on the Drug Use Pattern of Heroin Addicts Who Return to Society after Detoxification

Abstract:Objective To examine the drug use pattern of detoxificated heroin addicts after 1 year from return to society after detoxification,and to identify predictors of relapse.Methods 563 heroin addicts were accessed by case questionnaire and the Perceived Stress Scall(PPS),Addiction Severity Index (ASI),and followed after 1 year by the Nature History Interview (NHI) from return to society after detoxification."Relapse" was defined as any heroin use during 1 year after detoxification.Survival analysis were used to examine the drug use pattern and to identify the predictor of relapse.Results There were 111 cases (44.6％) had heroin use during observation period among 249 cases who completee 1 year follow-up.Survival analysis showed that the average maintaining abstinence time was (8.3 ± 0.3) months.Relapsed and non-relapsed addicts presented different craving degree (3.69 ±3.60 vs.0.40 ± 1.46,P ＜0.01),PSS scores (19.0 ± 4.7 vs.17.6 ± 4.6,P ＜ 0.05),physical condition dimension score [0.00 (0.00-0.33)vs.0.00(0.00(0.00-0.02),P ＜0.01],employment dimension score (0.83 ±0.27 vs.0.67 ±0.30,P ＜ 0.01),alcohol problem dimension score [0.00 (0.00-0.08) vs.0.00 (0.00-0.00)],P ＜ 0.05],drug problem dimension score [0.14 ± (0.00-0.25) vs.0.00 (0.00-0.00),P ＜0.01],legal problems dimension score [0.00 (0.00-0.05) vs.0.00 (0.00-0.00),P ＜ 0.01],family status dimension score [0.13(0.04-0.26) vs.0.10(0.00-0.18),P ＜0.01],mental health dimension score [0.09(0.00-0.36) vs.0.00(0.00-0.00),P ＜ 0.01] at follow-up interview.Cox regression analysis results showed that the craving degree during the past one month at baseline was a risk factor related to relapse (OR =1.226,P ＜ 0.01).Conclusion The proportion of detoxificated heroin addicts during 1 year from return to society occur relapse is higher,and relapsed heroin addicts probably present different clinical characteristics in camparison with non-relapsed ones.
AN INVESTIGATION ON EFFICACY OF NALTREXONE THERAPY FOR RELAPSE PREVENTION AFTER DETOXIFICATION IN HEROIN ADDICTS

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of naltrexone(NTX) as a maintenance pharmacotherapy for relapse prevention treatment in heroin addicts,and the factors influencing NTX use.Methods:A multi-center retrospective investigation was carried out in drug dependent treatment agencies based in the regions of Guangdong,Beijing and Zhejiang.All the subjects were opiate dependent clients and met the following criteria:(1) had taken NTX regularly on family basis;(2) agreed to participate in this study,and no severe organic diseases or psychiatric disorders.The outcomes of NTX treatment assessed were:(1) the acceptability and efficacy for maintenance treatment;(2) heroin re-use or relapse during NTX maintenance therapy and the reasons;(3) subjective euphoria associated with heroin use before and during NTX maintenance therapy;(4)presence of adverse reactions of NTX.Results:A total of 531 eligible clients who had the experience of NTX use completed the survey.The mean duration of NTX maintenance therapy was 5.1±s 7.0(0.3-84) months.The mean daily dose of NTX was 45.5 mg.39.4%(209/531) of the clients experienced no any subjective euphoria when they tried to re-use heroin during NTX use.The mean value of subjective euphoria for heroin before and during NTX maintenance therapy by VAS was 8.1 cm±s 2.2 cm and 2.8 cm±s 2.5 cm,respectively(t=38.626;P=0.000).57.6%(306/531) had experienced adverse drug effects and 23.2%(22/95) had their GPT more than 40 unit(the average 36.2±s 26.0).The knowledge and acceptance of NTX revealed that 87.2% would like to take NTX for longtime.Conclusion:NTX appears to be a promising pharmacotherapy for relapse prevention in heroin addicts,and particularly in family or community based maintenance therapy in China.

Results All of the patients were followed up with a mean of 8 months the information of 2 cases were lost 18 patients had an excellent results 2 patients had a good results the drug-free time were more than half a year;relapse occurred in 2 cases the drug free time was between 3 months and half a year in 2 cases and less than a month in 2 cases. No particular complications occurred. Conclusions The operation on alleviating drug addicts` psychological dependence by ablating the NAc bilaterally or deep brain stimulation(DBS on bilateral NAc is feasible and safe.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Stereotactic surgery has been used to treat heroin abstinence in China since 2000 by ablating the amygdaloid nucleus (AMY) and the nucleus accumbens (NAc), which also provides opportunity to identify the relationship between these nuclei and addiction. Our study aimed to explore the physiological and psychological effects of electrically stimulating the AMY and the NAc in heroin addicts after detoxification by observing changes of heart rate, arterial pressure and occurrence of euphoria similar to heroin induced euphoria. METHODS:A total of 70 heroin addicts after detoxification were recruited, and 61 of them were eligible to be given stereotactic surgery for heroin abstinence. The operation was carried out after determining the coordinates of all target nucleuses, and stimulation was performed at the AMY and the NAc solely or jointly. Heart rate, arterial pressure and occurrence of euphoria similar to heroin induced euphoria were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS:The average heat rate was (66 ± 10) beats/min before electric stimulation, and significantly increased to (84 ± 14) beats/min during stimulation, and changed to (73 ± 12) beats/min 10 minutes after stimulation. There was a significant elevation of the average arterial pressure from 83 mmHg before stimulation to 98 mmHg during the stimulation, and it then decreased to 90 mmHg after stimulation. Forty-three of the 61 patients showed intense euphoria similar to heroin induced euphoria. The largest number (118/186) of euphoric responses occurred when the AMY and the NAc were stimulated at the same time. Odds ratio was 5.4 (95%CI: 2.4 - 11.9, P < 0.0001) to quantify the association. Results from a Logistic regression model showed a positive correlation between unilateral stimulation of either the AMY or NAC and induction of euphoria (OR > 1), especially when the left AMY or left NAc was stimulated (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS:Our data are consistent with existing results that the AMY and the NAc are related to addiction. Different roles in drug dependence would be suggested according to the location of the AMY and NAc.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the advancement in the research of treatment of opioid dependence with electroacupuncture(EA) since 2003.This work,supported by a grant from the National Basic Research Programme(2003CB515407) of China,includes two parts,one is to investigate the effect of EA of different frequencies on morphine withdrawal syndrome(physical dependence) and morphine-induced conditioned place preference(psychic dependence) and their mechanisms in rats,another is to observe the effect of Han's acupoint nerve stimulator(HANS),a device for transcutaneous nerve electric stimulation(TENS),on opiate withdrawal syndrome and craving for opiates in heroin addicts.
Neuro-electrophysiological Reactions to Heroin-Related Cue in Abstinent Heroin Dependents

Abstract:Objective To explore the changes of craving and neuro-electrophysiological reactions under the exposure of heroin-related cues in abstinent heroin dependents.Methods In this self-controlled study,382 abstinent heroin dependent patients watched video of heroin smoking and injecting situations,and in the meantime were exposed to herein simulacrum and apparatus after relaxation exercises.The neuroelectrophysiological reactions were mcagured with a multi-biofeedback instrument before and after the cue exposed.Self-reported craving was also assessed before and after cue exposed.Results The craving were increased[(18±22)mm vs.(29±29)mm,P＜0.01]after cue exposures compared to pre-exposure,EMG[(12±7)μN vs.(14±10)μV,P＜0.01]and SC[(6.8±4.3)μS vs.(7.4±4.3)μS,P＜0.01]also increased.But the percentages of δ,θ,α,SMR,low β,high β decreased compared to that under the cue exposures[8:(10.8±4.7)%vs.(9.7±4.4)%,P＜0.01;0:(6.8±2.0)%vs.(6.3±2.0)%,P＜0.01;α:(4.8±1.8)%vs.(4.5±1.7)%,P＜0.01;SMR:(3.0 ±1.2)%vs.(2.8±1.2)%,P＜0.01;low β:(2.6±1.1)%vs.(2.5±1.1)%,P＜0.01 and high β:(4.6 ±1.5)%vs.(4.5±1.5)%.P＜0.05].Conclusions The results indicate that drug-related cue induce heroin craving and electrophysiological reactions.
Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation for the Treatment of Withdrawal Syndrome in Heroin Addicts.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo assess the therapeutic effect of transcutaneous electric acupoint stimulation (TEAS) for the treatment of withdrawal syndrome in heroin addicts.MethodsA total of 63 male heroin addicts with withdrawal score higher than 20 were recruited in the Detoxification Center of Zhongshan city, Guangdong province, China. They were randomly distributed into two groups: TEAS group (n=31) received TEAS by using a Han's acupoint nerve stimulator (HANS) model 200A with two output channels, 2-3 sessions per day, 30 minutes per session for 10 consecutive days. Electrical stimulation of alternating frequencies of 2- and 100- Hz with 3 second each, and with intensity of 10-15 mA was applied on Hegu (LI-4) and Laogong (PC-8) points on one hand, and Neiguan (PC-6) and Waiguan (SJ-5) points on the other forearm via electroconductive skin pads of 4 cm x 4 cm in size. The control group (n=32) was treated with similar procedure except that the leads of the output of the stimulator was disconnected. Assessments of the severity of the withdrawal syndrome were conducted one day before and on each day during the whole treatment period of 10 days. Buprenorphin of 1 mg per day sublingually was provided to all subjects in the first two days, and then to those with withdrawal score over 20 in the following days.ResultsThe TEAS treatment dramatically alleviated the withdrawal syndrome during heroin detoxification. No significant difference was found in withdrawal scores between the two groups at the beginning of the observation. Withdrawal scores showed a more marked drop in TEAS group than the control starting from the second day, and maintained at a lower level for the whole course of treatment. The area under the curve of withdrawal score in TEAS group was only 40% of that in the control (P<0.001, two way repeated measures analysis of variance), and the requirement of buprenorphine was only 10% of that in the control. No adverse effects were observed in either group.ConclusionTEAS of 2/100 Hz for 10 days in abrupt abstinence of the heroin addicts resulted in a marked reduction of the withdrawal syndrome as well as a reduced requirement for rescue opioids.
