Explicit Comparative Advantages,Intra-industry Trade,and Sino-US Bilateral Trade Balance

Abstract:My creative contributions made in this paper are as follows:(1)we have subdivided industry into 4-digit data of STIC and improved the method of calculating RCA index,revealing that the groups of China's exports of industrial goods to U.S.(there are 66 groups of misc.manufactured articles,51 groups of goods manufactured with primitive materials,and 36 groups of machinery and transportation equipment)have obvious comparative advantages;(2)applying adjusted index of intra-industry trade(IIT)to U.S.-China IIT,I have confirmed that bad is the balance in the static U.S.-China IIT of industrial goods,that the trade of most of goods groups tends to be inter-industry trade,and that only a small part displays vertical IIT;(3)the GL index and Cj index cannot reflect the directions land degrees of IIT imbalance,but I have constructed the imbalance index of IIT,uncovering the goods groups that aggravate the imbalances in U.S.-China trade of industrial goods and the goods groups that lessen this trade imbalances;(4)in my opinion,if we adopt the approach given by Thorpe & Zhang(2005)to the categorical aggregation in the numerator,the dynamic IIT index will be distorted,but I have modified the said dynamic index and proved that the dynamic IIT imbalances in terms of U.S.-China trade in industrial goods are worse than the static IIT imbalances and that it is difficult to cover the deficit of U.S.trade with China in a short time.
