Abstract:A generalized formalism of QCD multipole expansion including constituent-quark-field quantization is proposed. It can be applied to study soft-gluon emission processes of heavy-quark-antiquark systems with quark-flavor changing or quark pair annihilation. As an application, the radiative decays $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}+\ensuremath{\eta}$ and $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ are studied in this framework. It is shown that $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}+\ensuremath{\eta}$ is dominated by a vector-meson-dominance mechanism in which the vector mesons are $n^{3}S_{1}$ states of $c\overline{c}$ and the calculated rate is in agreement with the experiment. The decay $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ is dominated by a different vector-meson-dominance mechanism in which the vector meson is ${\ensuremath{\rho}}^{0}$.

Abstract:I review the basics of perturbative QCD, including infrared divergences and safety, collinear and $k_T$ factorization theorems, and various evolution equations and resummation techniques for single- and double-logarithmic corrections. I then elaborate its applications to studies of jet substructures and hadronic two-body heavy-quark decays.

Abstract:Recent progress in the calculation of multi-loop, multi-scale diagrams is reviewed. Expansion techniques combined with new developments in Computer algebra allow to evaluate the R ratio for massive quarks up to order $\alpha_s^2$ and, partly, even $\alpha_s^3$. Similar techniques can be applied to Higgs- or Z-boson decays and mixed QCD and electroweak interactions.

Abstract:One of the most important tasks in high energy physics is the search for the exotic states, such as glueball, hybrid, and multiquark states. The transitions {psi}(ns){yields}{psi}(ms)+{pi}{pi} and {upsilon}(ns){yields}{upsilon}(ms)+{pi}{pi} attract great attention because they may reveal characteristics of hybrids. In this work, we analyze those transition modes in terms of the theoretical framework established by Yan and Kuang. It is interesting to notice that the intermediate states between the two gluon emissions are hybrids, therefore by fitting the data, we are able to determine the mass spectra of hybrids. The ground hybrid states are predicted as 4.23 GeV (for charmonium) and 10.79 GeV (for bottonium) which do not correspond to any states measured in recent experiments, thus it may imply that, very possibly, hybrids mix with regular quarkonia to constitute physical states. Comprehensive comparisons of the potentials for hybrids whose parameters are obtained in this scenario with the lattice results are presented.

Abstract:Stimulated by both new experimental data and theoretical interest, the properties of the spin-singlet P state ${(}^{1}$${P}_{1}$) in the cc\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} and bb\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} system have been reexamined in the framework of the QCD multipole expansion. We have estimated various rates for producing \ensuremath{\psi}(1 $^{1}P_{1}$) and \ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1 $^{1}P_{1}$) in hadronic transitions, and for producing \ensuremath{\psi}(1 $^{1}P_{1}$) in pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} annihilation. The \ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi} mass spectrum in the transition \ensuremath{\Upsilon}''\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1 $^{1}P_{1}$)\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi} has been computed, and the two pions peak at low masses. An interesting approximation proposed by Voloshin and Zakharov is explored further in conjunction with the axial anomaly to relate many isospin-violating ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ transitions involving $^{1}\mathrm{P}_{1}$ to the known rate of \ensuremath{\psi}'\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi} ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$. The rates for \ensuremath{\psi}'\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\psi} (1 $^{1}\mathrm{P}_{1}$)${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$ and \ensuremath{\psi}(1 $^{1}P_{1}$)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi} ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ are found to be large. The implications are discussed.
Coupled-channel Effects in Hadronic Transitions in Heavy-Quarkonium Systems.

Abstract:A systematic calculation of the coupled-channel effects in hadronic transitions in the ccBAR and bbBAR systems is given. The unitarized quark model based on the 3P0 quark-pair-creation mechanism is adopted as the coupled-channel model. The emitted pions can now be produced both from the conventional Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka- (OZI) forbidden process described by QCD multipole-gluon emissions and from the light-quark loop through an OZI-allowed process described by the quark-pair-creation model. There is interference between the two kinds of transition amplitudes. Taking the experimental values of GAMMA(psi' --> J/psi-pi-pi) and d-GAMMA(psi' --> J/psi-pi-pi)/dM(pi-pi) as inputs to determine the two unknown parameters in the theory, we predict the transition rates and M(pi-pi) distributions in the bbBAR system. The obtained rates for UPSILON' --> UPSILON-pi-pi, UPSILON" --> UPSILON-pi-pi, UPSILON" --> UPSILON'pi-pi and the distribution d-GAMMA(UPSILON' --> UPSILON-pi-pi)/dM(pi-pi) are in good agreement with the experiments. For d-GAMMA(UPSILON" --> UPSILON-pi-pi)/dM(pi-pi), the present theory does give a bigger low-M(pi-pi) distribution than the pure QCD multipole expansion does, but it is still too small to fit the CLEO data.

Emphasis is put on the success of perturbative QCD and the determination of the fundamental scale parameter . Recent development of heavy quarkonium physics is also reviewed from the point of view of QCD and the possibility that future heavy quarkonium experiments can provide further quantitative QCD tests is discussed.

Abstract:Within the framework of the multipole expansion of quantum chromodynamics, we propose a model to compute the rates of hadronic transitions in the $b\\overline{b}$ system and heavier $Q\\overline{Q}$ states. Rates and estimated branching ratios of various transitions are given. The predicted result for ${\\ensuremath{\\Upsilon}}^{\\ensuremath{'}}\\ensuremath{\\rightarrow}\\ensuremath{\\Upsilon}\\ensuremath{\\pi}\\ensuremath{\\pi}$ agrees with recent measurements. We discuss the spin-flip $\\ensuremath{\\pi}\\ensuremath{\\pi}$ transitions ${\\ensuremath{\\Upsilon}}^{\\ensuremath{'}\\ensuremath{'}}\\ensuremath{\\rightarrow}1^{1}P_{1}\\ensuremath{\\pi}\\ensuremath{\\pi}$ and $2^{3}P_{J}\\ensuremath{\\rightarrow}1^{1}S_{0}\\ensuremath{\\pi}\\ensuremath{\\pi}$ which can be used to reach the spin-singlet states $1^{1}P_{1}$ and $1^{1}S_{0}$.
Magnetorotational Instability in Liquid Metal Couette Flow

Abstract:Despite the importance of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) as a fundamental mechanism for angular momentum transport in magnetized accretion disks, it has yet to be demonstrated in the laboratory. A liquid sodium alpha-omega dynamo experiment at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology provides an ideal environment to study the MRI in a rotating metal annulus (Couette flow). A local stability analysis is performed as a function of shear, magnetic field strength, magnetic Reynolds number, and turbulent Prandtl number. The later takes into account the minimum turbulence induced by the formation of an Ekman layer against the rigidly rotating end walls of a cylindrical vessel. Stability conditions are presented and unstable conditions for the sodium experiment are compared with another proposed MRI experiment with liquid gallium. Due to the relatively large magnetic Reynolds number achievable in the sodium experiment, it should be possible to observe the excitation of the MRI for a wide range of wavenumbers and further to observe the transition to the turbulent state.

Abstract:The widths for pionic decays of the lowest two excited doublets ${(0}^{+}{,1}^{+})$ and ${(1}^{+}{,2}^{+})$ of heavy mesons are studied with QCD sum rules in the leading order of heavy quark effective theory. The ambiguity due to the presence of two distinct ${1}^{+}$ states is solved. The soft pion approximation is not used.

Abstract:Perturbative QCD has made significant progress over the last few decades. In the first part, we present an introductory overview of perturbative QCD as seen from a modern viewpoint. We explain the relation between purely perturbative predictions and predictions based on Wilsonian effective field theories. We also review progress of modern computational technologies and discuss intersection with frontiers of mathematics. Analyses of singularities in Feynman diagrams play key roles towards developing a unified view. In the second part, we discuss application of perturbative QCD, based on the formulation given in the first part, to heavy quarkonium systems and the interquark force between static color charges. We elucidate impacts on order Lambda_QCD physics in the quark mass and interquark force, which used to be considered inaccessible by perturbative QCD.

Abstract:Heavy-ion collisions involve strongly coupled dynamics of QCD in the entire history of time evolution. We review recent theoretical efforts to meet this challenge, focusing on the two approaches that the speaker has contributed to: 1) Holography or AdS/CFT correspondence, and 2) Symmetry protected phenomena such as those originating from triangle anomaly. The presentation is oriented to non-experts on these fields, and hence relies on intuitive pictures of the methods and the results, without going into specific details.

Abstract:As the fundamental theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) plays a crucial role in precision tests of the standard model (SM) and in the search for new physics. In this article, we provide a brief overview of recent progress in QCD studies relevant to collider physics, focusing on fixed-order calculations and resummation techniques, parton distribution functions and their calculations, as well as their impact on the search for new physics, SM precision tests, and studying the intrinsic properties of hadrons. Based on this, we also discuss the prospects of their applications and intersections with other disciplines in the future.

Abstract:We provide a novel development in jet physics by predicting the energy profiles of light-quark and gluon jets in the framework of perturbative QCD. Resumming large logarithmic contributions to all orders in the coupling constant, our predictions are shown to agree well with Tevatron CDF and Large-Hadron-Collider CMS data. We also extend our resummation formalism to the invariant mass distributions of light-quark and gluon jets produced in hadron collisions. The predicted peak positions and heights in jet mass distributions are consistent with CDF data within uncertainties induced by parton distribution functions.

Abstract:I give a brief outline of the theoretical framework for the modern treatment of the strong interaction effects in heavy quark decays, based on first principles of QCD. This model-independent approach is required to meet the precision of current and future experiments. Applications to a few problems of particular practical interest are reviewed, including the precise determination of V_{cb} and V_{ub}. I emphasize the peculiarities of simultaneously accounting for the perturbative and power-suppressed effects necessary for accurate predictions.

Abstract:We have studied the charmonium and bottomonium hybrid states with various J^PC quantum numbers in QCD sum rules. At leading order in α_s, the two-point correlation functions have been calculated up to dimension six including the tri-gluon condensate and four-quark condensate. After performing the QCD sum rule analysis, we have confirmed that the dimension six condensates can stabilize the hybrid sum rules and allow the reliable mass predictions. We have updated the mass spectra of the charmonium and bottomonium hybrid states and identified that the negative-parity states with J^PC=(0, 1, 2)^-+, 1^– form the lightest hybrid supermultiplet while the positive-parity states with J^PC=(0, 1)^+-, (0, 1, 2)^++ belong to a heavier hybrid supermultiplet.

Abstract:We summarize recent developments in our understanding of low-mass quark-antiquark excitations in hadronic matter under various different conditions. This includes the thermodynamics of the chiral condensate, pions as Goldstone bosons in normal nuclear matter, and excursions into extreme territory of the QCD phase diagram: lepton pair production from a fireball expanding through the transition boundary between the quark-gluon and hadron pha ses of QCD.

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:The last five years have brought considerable progress in the study of the bound-state problem in continuum quantum field theory. We highlight a subset of that progress; viz., that made within the context of Dyson–Schwinger equation analyses of cold, sparse hadrons. Our focus is primarily on advances in the reliable computation, explanation and prediction of quantities that are truly measurable; but we also review aspects of a new paradigm that has condensates contained within hadrons, and explain that the asymptotic form of parton distribution amplitudes and functions are practically unreachable with terrestrial facilities. Given the pace of expansion in experiment and improvement in theory, it appears possible that the next five years will bring profound growth in our store of knowledge about hadrons and nuclei.

Abstract:The search for the critical point of QCD in heavy-ion collision experiments has sparked enormous interest with the completion of phase I of the RHIC beam energy scan. Here, I review the basics of the thermodynamics of the QCD phase transition and its implications for experimental multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. Several sources of noncritical fluctuations impact the observables and need to be understood in addition to the critical phenomena. Recent progress has been made in dynamical modeling of critical fluctuations, which ultimately is indispensable to understand potential signals of the QCD critical point in heavy-ion collision.
