Abstract:Gujingjingshe (诂经精舍) Academy was an eminent aca de my of classical learning in the Qing Dynasty, whose founder was Ruan Yuan (阮元) , both an influential minister and one of the greatest scholars at that time. He made great contributions to several branches of learning. He was particularly r enowned as the chief compiler of China's first monumental work of history of ast ronomy and mathematics entitled Chouren Zhuan (《畴人传》), which laid the f oundations of modern studies in the history of science in China. In the Qing Dynasty, the vast majority of academies taught eight-legged essays for the official-oriented imperial examinations, while only a few were geared t o developing scholars of real ability and learning. Never content with scholars doing the said stereotyped writings only, Ruan Yu advocated real learning all hi s life, including both classics, history, government affairs and poetry and astr onomy, mathematics and geography. As a great scholar and high-ranking official, Ruan was capable of implementing his educational reform. In teaching and resear ch at Gujingjingshe, he introduced such contents as astronomy, mathematics, geog raphy, water conservancy, military affairs, and scientific and technological kno wledge from the West. He initiated student-centered teaching methodology under theguidance of teachers and developed students' independence in academic pursuit . Collected Works of Gujingjingshe Academy contains a good number of essays conc erning science and technology. It is a rare case in Chinese history of ancient e ducation and especially at the time of nationwide imperial examination craze. Ruan Yuan had a strong sense of superiority in terms of Chinese culture. He didn 't accept the statement that China was fundamentally behind the West in science and technology, although he admitted that the latter had certain superiority. He did expect Chinese scholars to gain a thorough understanding of both Chinese an d Western learning and surpass the latter ultimately. However, he misguided Guji ngjingshe scholars in astronomical research: When the introduction of Western le arning into China was interrupted, the so-called introduction given in school w as merely made in the typically Chinese way. For example, astronomical research was conducted to serve the studies of classics and history. All these hindered m any Chinese intellectuals of his generation and generations to come from learnin g further from the West. After all, however, from the perspective of social and cultural development, Guj ingjingshe Academy was undoubtedly progressive at that time, exercising indispen sable influence in the whole 19th century. Its way of educational reform set an example for a large number of new-style academies. It really played an importan t role in turning traditional academies into modern ones in the nineteenth centu ry, which laid the foundations of the establishment and development of much more modern academies in the late 19th century where Western learning would continue to be offered to produce talents for modern China.
