Abstract:The main epicenter of the powerful 12 May 2008earthquake (8.0 magnitude) was in Wenchuan, Sichuan.Aftershocks(10,418)continueduntil5June(ChinaEarth-quake Administration [CEA] 2008), and this natural disas-terwastheworstChinahadexperiencedin60years.Theconsequences have been devastating. By 5 June, 69,127human lives had been lost, 17,918 people were missing,373,612 people were injured, and millions of homes andworkplaces were damaged. Over 45 million people havebeen affected by this disaster (State Council of China2008). The huge tragedy saddened and overwhelmedChina and the whole world. In addition to the fast andeffective response by the Chinese government and army,society in general, including international communities,mobilizedtovolunteerhumanandfinancialresourcesforemergency relief and to help with rebuilding, which isexpected to take years and many more resources.In addition to its human victims, the earthquake alsoaffected ecosystems and their biodiversity. We examinedhowtheearthquakeaffectedthegiantpandaanditshabi-tats and provide insights into conservation and sustain-able development choices in earthquake-prone and af-fected areas when a significant rebuilding plan is underway.There is no clear standard with which to quantify theeffects of an earthquake (Richter 1935). Nevertheless,generally, the higher the magnitude, the greater the dam-ages. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, an earth-quake of 5.0 magnitude could be felt by all, move someheavyfurniture,andcauseplastertofall,butoveralldam-age would be “slight” (USGS 2008).
