Abstract:In this paper, we examine whether and how board gender diversity impacts firms' cost of equity. We predict that firms with greater board gender diversity enjoy a lower cost of equity than firms with less gender diversity due to a larger investor base, less information asymmetry among investors, and more conservative accounting disclosure. We use staggered worldwide boardroom gender diversity reforms as a quasi-natural experiment to conduct a difference-in-differences analysis. Using a large sample of firms from 43 markets, we obtain empirical evidence in line with our prediction. Our results are robust to tests involving alternative samples, specifications, and explanations. Cross-sectional analyses show that the effect of board gender diversity on the cost of equity is less (more) pronounced when firms are more (less) gender-equal, transparent, and conservative in accounting.

Abstract:Amidst increasing global attention on corporate environmental responsibility, the impact of carbon emission disclosure on financial outcomes remains a pertinent question. Existing literature suggests that transparency in carbon disclosure can influence investor perception and capital costs, yet detailed mechanisms and broader economic implications are less understood. In this study, using data from Chinese publicly traded companies from 2017 to 2022, we investigate how carbon emission disclosure affects the implied cost of capital, with a focus on the mediating role of stock liquidity. Our findings reveal that enhanced transparency in carbon reporting significantly lowers the implied cost of capital by improving stock liquidity, a previously underexplored channel. This effect is particularly pronounced in sectors with high carbon footprints and within regions emphasizing sustainable finance policies. The results underscore the economic benefits of environmental transparency, suggesting that robust disclosure practices can serve as a strategic tool for firms to reduce financing costs while contributing to broader sustainability goals.

Abstract:This research explores the nexus between a firm's digital transformation and its equity-related expenses. Drawing on data from China spanning from 2007 to 2022, the findings reveal a tendency for firms undergoing advanced digital metamorphosis to exhibit reduced informational opacity and enhanced governance structures, resulting in decreased equity costs. This effect is more distinct in private sector companies. The study enriches the discourse on the economic impacts of digitalization and elements shaping equity costs, offering valuable guidance that can inform corporate digital strategies.

Abstract:This study examines the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) towards primary stakeholders on the cost of equity capital in Chinese listed firms, and divides the sample into state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and non-state-owned enterprises (NSOEs) for comparison. We construct a set of CSR index systems to measure the quality of the CSR practices and use several approaches to estimate firms’ ex ante cost of equity capital. The results show that firms with higher CSR scores have significantly lower cost of equity capital. In particular, we find that investments in improving CSR towards investors make the greatest contribution to reducing firms’ equity financing costs, and the cost of capital effects of CSR is more significant in recessions than in economic booms. In addition, SOEs have better CSR and lower cost of equity capital than NSOEs, but the effect of CSR in reducing the cost of equity capital is greater for NSOEs than for SOEs. The findings suggest that CSR toward primary stakeholders can be profitable and beneficial to Chinese firms.

Abstract:Although many domestic scholars have analyzed the reasons for the low efficiency of corporation governance of the listed companies, and proposed some viewpoints and measures, the problem remains unsolved. This paper argues that the basic reason for poor governance efficiency is the irrational equity ownership structure and low liquidity in security market. It puts forward that the basic measure should be to reduce and state shares.

Abstract:The set of rules, laws, and procedures that lead and regulate a firm is known as corporate governance (Alqaraleh et al., 2022). The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the corporate governance index on the cost of equity for businesses listed on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Stock Exchange. This study gathers data from yearly reports from 2015 to 2021 in order to test hypotheses using multiple linear regression models to analyze the gathered data. The independent variable of the corporate governance index in our research consists of eight distinct corporate governance characteristics. According to the findings of our investigation, there is a negative correlation between corporate governance and equity capital cost. This indicates that the quality of corporate governance may lower the cost of capital. In order to improve the quality of financial reporting, we advocate implementing a robust corporate governance framework and reducing information asymmetry, i.e., increasing transparency and agency conflict, therefore, attracting financial investors and suppliers, enhancing the capital market, and absorbing the organization’s required financial resources at a reduced rate. The study results suggest that corporations might minimize the cost of equity by creating excellent corporate governance. In the cost of equality, the result of the study emphasizes the significance and efficacy of corporate governance.

Abstract:<p>We document that corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities increase the cost of equity in East Asian. Further, the effect is driven by economies with weak investor protection. Our findings are robust to alternative variable measurements, accounting for endogeneity of CSR, and various methodological specifications. The positive relation between CSR and the cost of equity is attributable to the high agency conflicts in East Asian economies. Our findings highlight that the effect of CSR is contingent on the research context, and emphasize the importance of enhancing investor protection and mitigating agency conflicts for the promotion of CSR.</p>

Corporate Cash Reserves and Corporate Governance Mechanism: the Empirical Study of the Chinese Publicly Traded Corporations

Abstract:This paper,by presenting a sample of 254 firms from seven industries,tests the relation between corporate cash reserves and governance mechanism based on the cross-section data of publicly traded corporations in China.Findings show that the factors which affect the corporate cash reserves in developed countries also work on the ones in China.Whereas,these factors have opposite effects on the Chinese corporate cash reserves.On the base of the analysis of this phenomenon,we suggest that the different effects of variables are attributed to the difference of the composing of the cost and lucre of corporate cash reserves.In the perfect market economy,the motives of the precaution and the entrenchment effect of corporate cash reserves are more important to the agents than that to the ones in un-perfect market economy.The corporate managers in China care more about the current on-the-job consumption and prettifying performances through spending the cash reserves as quickly as possible.To sum up,the difference in the use of cash reserves is the major reason for the diverse effects of the agency problem.Furthermore,we show that Dittmar et al(2003)'s conclusion is wrong.The reason for why the corporate cash reserves is higher in poor-shareholder-protection countries than that in better-shareholder-protection countries is that the optimal cash balance under the condition of maximum shareholder's wealth is much lower in better-investor-protection countries.Contrarily,the agency problem diminishes the difference of corporate cash reserves level between the perfect and un-perfect market economy.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to examine the effect of the corporate ethical approach on the cost of equity capital. This study is conducted on a large international sample on behalf of the world’s most engaged firms from an ethical point of view in 2015. Design/methodology/approach The multivariate linear regression model is used to meet the purpose of this study and research hypotheses are also examined using a sample of 80 of most ethical firms in the world during the year 2015. Moreover, three variables (i.e. business ethics, corporate social responsibility and executive compensation based on the achievement of sustainable development goals) are used to reflect the corporate ethical approach and the implied cost of equity capital is used for estimating the cost of equity. In this regard, equity cost estimation is the most appropriate approach to test the effect of business ethics on the cost of financing firms. Findings Based on a sample of 80 firms emerging as the world’s most ethical firms in 2015, the results revealed that firms with better ethics scores are significantly associated with a reduced cost of equity capital. This paper also demonstrates that the executive incentive pays that are based on the objectives of sustainable development are able to explain different outcomes regarding the relation between corporate ethical behaviors and the cost of equity. These findings support arguments in the literature that firms with socially responsible practices have a higher valuation and lower risk. Originality/value This study provides implications for global regulators and policymakers when setting social reporting standards, suggesting that corporate ethical engagement reduces the cost of equity capital by decreasing the information asymmetry and thereby reducing the firms’ risk. Therefore, the findings may be informative to international managers and investors when considering the effect of business ethics on the firm’s ex-ante cost of equity. In this perspective, the voluntary disclosure of information makes it possible to mitigate the problems of asymmetry of information and conflict of interest between the firm and its main providers of capital, which could reduce the cost of equity.

Abstract:We examine the benefits associated with corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure in an international setting covering 31 countries. Using variables such as the legal status of labor protection, CSR disclosure requirements, and public awareness of and attitudes toward CSR issues, we divide countries into more and less stakeholder-oriented groups. We find a negative association between CSR disclosure and the cost of equity capital; this relationship is more pronounced in stakeholder-oriented countries. We also find evidence that financial and CSR disclosures act as substitutes for each other in reducing the cost of equity capital. This study furthers our understanding of CSR disclosure and its consequences.

Abstract:We examine how investors' perceptions of firms' philanthropic behaviors alter the effect of corporate philanthropy on costs of equity capital. Using a sample of Chinese A‐share listed firms from 2007 to 2018, we find that firms making philanthropic donations have higher equity financing costs. In contrast, firms without politically connected executives, experiencing provincial official turnovers, and located in provinces with fiscal pressure do not see an increase in costs of equity capital. In addition, Chinese investors consider strategic corporate philanthropy to establish political connections less valuable after anticorruption campaigns are launched, hence requiring higher rates of return from firms making monetary donations. Overall, this paper provides evidence that investors' perceptions of firm behavior are shaped by unique institutional factors in emerging markets, resulting in unintended economic consequences for firms.

Abstract:This paper studies the relationship between role of government and cost of equity in Chinese security market.Reducing the intervention from government on the firms' operation will have two contrary effects:one is to increase the predictability of operation behaviors and business environment and consequently decreases the cost of equity.The other is the cost of equity will be increased without the government protection.The strength of the two effects is decided by the ownership property.This paper found that there is no significant influence of transferring government role on cost of equity because of the tradeoff between the two effects above while ultimate controller is local government.However,for non-state sample,the two variables have shown a negative relationship significantly because only predictability effect is working.

Abstract:The countervailing power of the creditors has been paid little attention for controlling shareholder in academia. This paper have the theoretical analysis and the empirical test on effects that debt of bank affect agency cost of controlling shareholder , then have examined moderating effect of property rights for the two variables , and have examined the interaction effect between internal governance mechanisms&law environment and debt of bank. Using listed real estate companies' panel data from 2003 to 2011 for stock market A. The results reveal that bank debt of firms decreased agency cost of controlling shareholder significantly , and we found the moderating effect of property rights and the interaction effect between internal governance mechanisms&law environment and bank debt. The conclusions enriched the principal-agent theory and the capital structure theory to some extent, Meanwhile, the conclusions have important guiding role for reforming the property rights further for the banks & the state-owned enterprises , and choosing the types of financing for companies.

Abstract:Social trust is the result and reflection of repeated games between individuals. Is social trust capable of optimizing enterprises' financing modes? The following results are obtained. (1) The greater the regional social trust level, the lower the cost of equity. (2) Social trust plays a larger role in lowering the cost of equity in state-owned enterprises and enterprises located in regions with strong rule of law. By improving accounting information quality, social trust can reduce investor information risk, thus lowering equity costs.

Abstract:In recent years, bank credit business is booming with the increasing borrowing intention of China’s listed companies, and debt financing has become the major approach among listed companies’ financing strategies. As a series of institutional arrangements about rights, responsibilities and benefits between different shareholders, corporate governance mechanism has a significant influence on the cost of debt financing. This paper employs variable coefficient panel data model to investigate the relationship of the listed company’s debt financing costs and corporate governance mechanism in terms of structural characteristics and time series characteristics. The results show that optimizing the structure of both Board of Directors and Board of Supervisors, establishing a reasonable management incentive system and reducing the concentration of ownership properly can directly contribute to a lower company’s debt financing costs. Meanwhile, property rights have an interactive influence on corporate governance from four aspects, which indirectly effect in company’s debt financing costs.

Abstract:Guiding institutional investors to actively participate in corporate governance is a hot issue to improve the internal governance of China’s listed companies. This study seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism that underlies the governance effects of the heterogeneity of institutional investors on the cost of capital, and the influence of ownership structure on the relationship between them. Using an unbalanced panel data on A-share listed companies of Shanghai and Shenzhen in China’s capital market during the 2014–2019 period, this study reveals how institutional investors with longer holding period and higher shareholding ratio are negatively associated with the cost of capital in China’s capital market. Furthermore, this study successfully confirms the moderating effect of ownership structure in the relationship between institutional investors and the cost of capital. China’s state-owned enterprises are more likely to introduce improvements at the corporate governance level, and ownership concentration weakens the negative influence of institutional investors on the cost of capital. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of the impacts of institutional investor’s heterogeneity and ownership structure on the cost of capital in China. In the process, the study yields useful implications for the theory and practice of corporate governance.

Abstract:Purpose The study analyzes the influence of corporate governance and ownership concentration levels on the cost of equity. Further, the authors extend the literature by investigating the moderating effect of ownership concentration levels (i.e. at 5%, 10% and 20%) on the relationship between corporate governance and the cost of equity. Design/methodology/approach The study applies several robust panel regression techniques to a sample of 114 active non-financial companies listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange from 2011 to 2016. Corporate governance was measured through a unique index comprising 30 governance attributes. The cost of equity was measured through the capital asset pricing model. Further, the authors construct three variables for ownership concentration levels, i.e. at 5%, 10% and 20%. To address the endogeneity problem, the one-lagged variable model and GMM approaches were also applied. Findings The results indicate that better corporate governance reduces the cost of equity, while ownership concentration at high thresholds would increase the cost of equity. Further, the authors find that ownership concentration at the 20% threshold moderates the relationship between corporate governance and the cost of equity. Thus, the authors argue that firms can minimize the risk faced by shareholders by implementing substantive corporate governance mechanisms. In addition, effective corporate governance mechanisms at high ownership concentration levels are imperative for managing the cost of equity. Originality/value The study reports novel evidence that ownership concentration at a high threshold moderates the effect of corporate governance on the cost of equity.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance by listed companies on the cost of equity capital from the perspectives of enterprise risk management and capital market risk pricing and discusses the mediating effects of operating risk. Using the causal steps approach, we conduct an empirical test with a sample of 7,241 Chinese A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2018. This paper uses PEG and OJ models to calculate the cost of equity capital and accounting earnings volatility to measure operating risk. Our results lead to the following conclusions: First, CSR performance is significantly negatively correlated with the cost of equity capital; second, CSR performance is significantly negatively correlated with operating risk; third, operating risk is a mediating variable between CSR performance and the cost of equity capital, and the mediating effect differs between long- and short-term risks. Our conclusions are confirmed by robustness tests.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the influence of environmental protection, social responsibility and corporate governance (ESG) performance on the cost of equity (COE) capital of Chinese A-Share companies between 2010 and 2020. Benchmark analysis discovers that ESG performance can significantly reduce the cost of equity capital of listed companies, which is robust even when heteroscedasticity, sequence correlation and cross-section correlation are controlled, respectively, or simultaneously. Mediating effects are discovered that ESG can, not only directly, but also indirectly reduce the cost of equity capital by reducing the market risk of enterprises and the increasing of their equity diversification.
