Abstract:Photoinduced reactions of chloranil (CA) with benzodioxoles 3–12 give triaryl orthoformate products 13–22 in 88–98 % yields via a single electron transfer (SET) mechanism. Photo-CIDNP measurements show that ion radical pairs such as (CA˙–– 3˙+) are formed in acetonitrile and neutral semiquinone–benzodioxol-2-yl radical pairs (RP) are formed in benzene as evidenced by the emissive and abnormally enhanced absorptive polarizations of the methylenedioxy protons (–O–CH2–O–) in the regenerated benzodioxoles in CD3CN and C6D6, respectively. Abnormally enhanced absorptions for the methine proton (2-H) in products 13, 15, 17 and 20 are also observed in C6D6 in accord with the formation of a radical pair (RP) intermediate en route to the product.

Abstract:Photoinduced reactions of chloranil (CA) with 1,1-diarylethenes 1 [(p-X-Ph)(2)C=CH2, X = F, Cl, H, Me] in benzene afforded products 4-14, respectively, with the bicyclo[4.2.0]oct-3-ene-2,5-diones 4, the 6-diarylethenylcyclobexa-2,5-diene-1,4-diones 5, and 2,3,5,6-tetrachlorohydroquinone 13 as the major primary products. The cyclobutane products 4 are formed via a triplet diradical intermediate without involvement of single electron transfer (SET) between the two reactants, while 5 is derived from a reaction sequence with initial SET interaction between (3)CA* and the alkene. The 9-arylphenanthrene-1,4-diones 6 and its 10-hydroxy-derivatives 7 are secondary photochemical products derived from 5. The isomeric cage products 9-11 are formed from 4 via intramolecular benzene-alkene [2 + 2] (ortho-)photocycloadditions induced by the triplet excited enedione moiety. The relative amount of the two groups of products (4 and its secondary products 9-11 via non-SET route vs 5 and its secondary products 6, 7, 8, 12, and 14 via SET route) shows a rather regular change, with the ratio of non-SET route products gradually increasing with the increase in oxidation potential of the alkenes and in the positive free energy change for electron transfer (Delta G(ET)) between (3)CA* and the alkene, at the expense of the ratio of the products from the SET route. The competition between the SET and non-SET routes was also found to be drastically influenced by solvent polarity, with the SET pathways more favored in polar solvent. Photo-CIDNP investigations suggest the intermediacy of exciplexes or contact ion radical pairs in these reactions in benzene, while in acetonitrile, SET process led to the formation of CA(.-) and cation radical of the alkene in the form of solvent separated ion radical pairs and free ions.

Abstract:Photolysis of chloranil (CA) with Z- or E-stilbenes 1-5 [(Z)- and (E)-XC(6)H(4)CH=CHC6H5, X = H, 4-Cl, 3-Cl, 4-Me) in benzene leads to the formation of trans-oxetane products 7-13 (80-88% yield) and extensive Z- to E- (when starting from Z-) as well as slight E- to Z- (when starting from E-) isomerizations of the stilbenes. For the monosubstituted stilbenes, two oxetane regioisomers are formed in comparable yields. Similar photolysis in acetonitrile resulted only in the one-way Z- to E-isomerization of the stilbenes without formation of oxetanes. (Z)- and (E)- 4-Wlethoxystilbenes do not form oxetane products with CA either in benzene or in acetonitrile, and one-way Z- to E-isomerization is the only reaction detected. Diphenylvinylene carbonate 6 gave oxetane product 14 with CA in benzene solution. Electron transfer between (3)CA* and the alkenes is involved in the cycloaddition and isomerization. Photolysis of CA with ethyl (E)- or (Z)-cinnamate (E-22 or Z-22). ethyl 3-nitrocinnamate (E-23 or Z-23), benzalacetone (E-24 or Z-24), chalcone (E-25 or Z-25) and (E)-4-fluorochalcon (E-26) in benzene or in acetonitrile gave trans-oxetane products 27-31 respectively in good yield (72-95%) and resulted in slight E-to-Z and considerable Z-to-E isomerizations without SET-process involvement.

Abstract:The interactions of chloranil with several aromatic amines were studied by measuring visible and ultraviolet absorption spectra at various temperatures between 70°K and 300°K, m-aminophenol, m-phenylenediamine, N,N-dimethyl-m-phenylenediamine, 1,3,5-triaminobenzene, and 1-methyl-2,4,6-triaminobenzene being taken as electron donors. The m-phenylenediamine-chloranil system was studied in detail and outer and inner complexes were found to exist as reaction intermediates. The structure and stability of the inner complex were discussed. Kinetic studies were made for the m-phenylenediamine-chloranil and 1,3,5-triaminobenzene-chloranil systems. The enthalpy change, ΔH, for the formation of the outer complex was determined from the temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant. The activation energies, ΔE1 and ΔE2, for the processes from the outer complex to the inner complex and from the inner complex to the succeeding intermediate, respectively, were determined by analysing the time dependence of the absor...

Abstract:Photoinduced addition reactions of chloranil (CA) with allyl ethyl ether 1, methyl methacrylate 2, vinyl acetate 3, styrene 4, alpha-chloro-styrene 5, and alpha, p-dichlorostyrene 6 gave cyclobutane products 10 to 15 respectively. Similar reaction of CA with indene 7 and (E)-beta-bromostyrene 8 gave oxetanes 16 and 17 respectively. Products of photoinduced addition of CA with cyclohexene 9 are solvent dependent: 18 in benzene, 19 in acetonitrile, and 18 and 19 both in dichloromethane. The role of SET process in determining the reaction site are discussed.

Abstract:2-Aminophenols underwent the Ugi four-component reaction (U-4CR) with trans-cinnamic acids, aromatic aldehydes and isocyanides in MeOH (50 degrees C, 48 h) to give the linear alpha-[N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-substituted amido] carboxamides in 54-80% yields. Treatment of the 2-hydroxyphenyl moiety in the U-4CR products with NaH and PhNTf2 afforded the corresponding aryl triflates (77-100%), which were subjected to the intramolecular Heck reaction (IMHR) catalyzed by 3-5 mol% Pd(OAc)(2)-BINAP (MeCN, 180 degrees C, 30-60 min) under microwave heating to furnish alpha-(3-arylidene-2-oxindol-1-yl) carboxamides in 52-77% yields.

Abstract:A general concise method for the synthesis phenanthridin-6(5H)-ones via photoinduced intramolecular annulation of N-phenylbenzamides was developed. Under argon atmosphere and room temperature, phenanthridin-6(5H)-ones were obtained via irradiation N-phenylbenzamides with a 280 nm UV lamp in the presence of methanesulfonic acid in toluene. The mechanism is illustrated and believed to proceed in the order of amides tautomerization, 6 pi-electric cyclization, [1,5]-H shift, amide-imidine tautomerization, keto-enol tautomerism and evolution hydrogen.

Abstract:Irradiation of mixtures of aryl perfluoroalkanesulfonates (RfSO3C6H4X-p, X = H, Cl and Me) (1) and aniline (2a), N,N-dimethylaniline (2b) or N,N-dimethylaniline (2c) results in the formation of 2-coupling products 3 and 4-coupling products 4. However, in the reactions of 2b and 2c, in addition to 3 and 4, arenes 5 and N-methylaniline (6a) or N-ethylaniline (6b) are also detected. The presence of p-dinitrobenzene, But2NO and hydroquinone suppresses the reaction significantly. A photo-induced electron-transfer mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:A concise and efficient photoinduced rearrangement of (E)-3-arylvinyl-4H-chromen-4-ones for the synthesis of benzoaryl-5-yl(2-hydroxyphenyl)methanones is described. Benzoaryl-5-yl-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methanones were obtained in 77-95% yields via the irradiation of (E)-3-arylvinyl-chromones in the 95% EtOH with a high-pressure mercury lamp at room temperature under Ar atmosphere. The reported method provides a novel procedure for the synthesis of α,α'-diaryl ketone derivatives without addition of any transition metals and oxidants or other additives. A plausible mechanism was proposed, and the rearrangement product was characterized by NMR, HRMS, and X-ray.

Abstract:Photoinduced electron transfer reactions of chalcone (CH) derivatives (1a–1e) with triethylamine (TEA) gave cis- and trans-2-benzoyl-1,3,4-triphenylcyclopentanols (2), meso- and (±)-1,3,4,6-tetraphenyl-1,6-hexanediones (3, 4), as well as 5-benzoyl-1,3,4-triphenyl-1-penten-3-ol (5). All these products are derived from radical addition to a neutral CH molecule by CH anion radical (7) and CH ketyl radical formed in sequential electron transfer (from TEA to excited CH)-proton transfer (from TEA1+ to CH1−). Photoinduced reactions of 1a–1e with N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) afforded, in addition to the hydrodimerization products 2–5, a CH-DMA addition product 16 formed by radical combination of CH ketyl-N-methyl-N-phenylaminomethyl radical pairs. The yield of 16 and the product ratio (addition-to-hydrodimerization ratio A/H) are affected by amine structures and reaction conditions. Therefore an increase in solvent polarity in the order benzene-acetonitrile-methanol and the presence of anhydrous magnesium perchlorate (special salt effect) result in decreases in the yield of 16 and in the ratio A/H by inhibiting in-cage proton transfer and promoting ion pair dissociation. An electron-withdrawing substituent at the benzene ring of DMA increases the yield of 16 and the A/H ratio by enhancing proton transfer from DMA1+ to CH1−, while a donor substituent on DMA has the reverse effect.

Abstract:Arnebinones B, E, and D (1-3) have been found to be sensitive to light, generating complex and diverse proton transfer products when triggered by light. A unique two-step irreversible intramolecular proton transfer of 1 produced five scalemic mixtures, of which four possessed intriguing dual planar chirality. The unprecedented orientation epimerization equilibrium of the intra-annular double bond was first observed and researched in the homologous meroterpenoids by HPLC monitoring and DFT calculations. A "p-benzoquinone-CH2/CH-π" moiety in the structure was the common key feature for the occurrence of this type of photoenolization reaction. The product transformation processes and universality of this photoinduced irreversible proton transfer reaction were analyzed together with the cytotoxic activities of arnebinones B, D, and E, and their photoreaction products.

Abstract:Irradiation of 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) with styrene derivatives 1–4, respectively, leads to a photochemical olefin dimerization–aromatic substitution reaction to give the corresponding (2,4,5-tricyanophenyl)tetralin derivative (8, 12, 16, 17, and 20) as the main product. Further irradiation of the primary product with alkene results in substitution of the meta-CN group by another phenyltetralinyl to give the corresponding 4:1 (alkene–TCNB) product. According to the effect of the codonor (biphenyl) and salt (magnesium perchlorate) on reaction rate, the result of photoinduced reactions of TCNB with tetralin (6) and 1-phenyltetralin (7) and analysis of the known kinetic data for relevant processes in the cyanoarene–alkene reactions, the mechanism for the formation of the olefin dimerization–aromatic substitution products (such as 8) is proposed to involve radical pair combination of the alkene cyclodimer radical (the corresponding 4-phenyl-1-tetralinyl radical) with TCNB− followed by expulsion of a CN−. Photoreactions of TCNB with the alkene photocyclodimer (1-phenyltetralin) may also make minor contributions. Photoinduced reaction of TCNB with 1-phenylcyclohexene (5) takes a different pathway from 1–4 to afford the 1:1 (5–TCNB) primary product 21 by deprotonation of 5+ and radical pair combination with TCNB− followed by elimination of HCN.

Abstract:Spectroscopic investigations discovered that the in-situ generated phenylhydrazone anion was significantly bathochromically shifted to visible light region for photoactivation under irradiation. The photoexcited phenylhydrazone anion was potential to reduce aryl iodides via single electron transfer process for the subsequent radical chain reaction. A redox-neutral photochemical carbonylation of aryl iodides was developed on basis of the special spectroscopic features of phenylhydrazone anion. This protocol provided a convenient and efficient synthetic tool for accessing carbonylation products under redox neutral conditions without the need of transition-metals.

Abstract:This article reports a detailed mechanistic and kinetic study of an unusual photoreaction leading to the (diazonia)tetrabenzonaphthacene skeleton. The photo‐triggered double intramolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr∗) has been investigated by varying the leaving groups. Photoreaction quantum yields have been determined and mechanistic insights have been supported by theoretical calculations using DFT and TD‐DFT methods. Additionally, we show that this light‐triggered formed diazonia constitutes a potent photosentitizer with a singlet oxygen generation quantum yield of 55 %, both in organic solvents and in water, which is an extremely relevant value in view of PDT applications or use as an oxidation photocatalyst in aqueous media. Once again, the experimental observations were supported by TD‐DFT calculations showing a large density of triplet states below the S1 excited state along with large spin‐orbit couplings. The reaction is not restricted to solutions but can also occur in solid PDMS matrices thus allowing for photochemical encoding of information that will progressively vanish upon prolonged UV‐exposure.

By simply regulating the addition of electron donor, highly chemoselective intramolecular hydroarylation and haloarylation reactions were achieved, providing efficient methods for the synthesis of 9‐benzylidene‐9H‐fluorene and 9‐(halo(phenyl)methylene)‐9H‐fluorene derivatives.
