Abstract:Irradiation of mixtures of aryl perfluoroalkanesulfonates (RfSO3C6H4X-p, X = H, Cl and Me) (1) and aniline (2a), N,N-dimethylaniline (2b) or N,N-dimethylaniline (2c) results in the formation of 2-coupling products 3 and 4-coupling products 4. However, in the reactions of 2b and 2c, in addition to 3 and 4, arenes 5 and N-methylaniline (6a) or N-ethylaniline (6b) are also detected. The presence of p-dinitrobenzene, But2NO and hydroquinone suppresses the reaction significantly. A photo-induced electron-transfer mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:Photoinduced reactions of chloranil (CA) with benzodioxoles 3–12 give triaryl orthoformate products 13–22 in 88–98 % yields via a single electron transfer (SET) mechanism. Photo-CIDNP measurements show that ion radical pairs such as (CA˙–– 3˙+) are formed in acetonitrile and neutral semiquinone–benzodioxol-2-yl radical pairs (RP) are formed in benzene as evidenced by the emissive and abnormally enhanced absorptive polarizations of the methylenedioxy protons (–O–CH2–O–) in the regenerated benzodioxoles in CD3CN and C6D6, respectively. Abnormally enhanced absorptions for the methine proton (2-H) in products 13, 15, 17 and 20 are also observed in C6D6 in accord with the formation of a radical pair (RP) intermediate en route to the product.

Abstract:Vinyl radicals were generated from 3-iodoflavones under a mercury lamp and tandem cyclization reactions occurred with five-membered heteroarenes entailing two consecutive C-C bond formations to synthesize benzo[e] chromeno[2,3-g] indol-13(1H)-one derivatives. The tandem cyclization reactions worked in acetonitrile without any additives such as transition metals, ligands and oxidants, giving rise to a broad variety of novel polycyclic xanthone frameworks in good yield under mild and environmentally friendly reaction conditions.

Abstract:The E/Z isomerization reaction of the multi-cyanostilbene molecule is still not clear. Herein, we have designed and synthesized three star-shaped molecular isomers with a triphenylamine core linked to two cyanostilbene groups with E/Z isomerization, Z,Z-TPDCF, Z,E-TPDCF and E,E-TPDCF, possessing three different isomeric molecular configurations, to investigate the specific E/Z isomerization reaction of the cyanostilbene groups in the two molecular arms. The in situ UV, 1H NMR and HPLC spectra under UV-irradiation clearly showed that the E/Z isomerization reactions of both E,E-TPDCF and Z,Z-TPDCF firstly turned them into Z,E-TPDCF, and the Z,E-TPDCF was almost simultaneously turned into more E,E-TPDCF and less Z,Z-TPDCF due to the calculated lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of Z,E-TPDCF on the cyanostilbene arm with the Z-configuration. In general, Z,E-TPDCF exhibited a relatively better configurational stability than Z,Z-TPDCF or E,E-TPDCF under the photo-irradiation conditions. Further research demonstrated that all three isomers exhibited excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties.

Abstract:Chrysenes, picene, fulminene, modified with imide, bromo, and amino functionalities, were synthesized through Mallory photoreaction as the key step, and their electronic spectra were investigated. Fluorescence spectra of chrysene-diimide CHRDI and bromo-substituted phencanene-imides, BrCHRI , BrPICI , BrFULI were dependent on solvent polarity to display appreciable fluorescence color changes. The solvatofluorochromic behavior was analyzed by conventional relationships between Stokes shift and solvent polarity parameters, such as Lippert-Mataga and Bilot-Kawski equations. The results indicated that the solvatofluorochromism was derived from the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) nature in the excited state. Theoretical studies using time-dependent density-functional theory revealed that the phenacene-imide molecules in the fluorescent state possessed ICT characters between the strongly electron-withdrawing imide moiety and moderately electron-donating phenacene cores. Amino-substituted chrysene-imide NH 2 CHRI showed fluorescence band in a red region ( λ FL = 618 nm) in toluene with a very large Stokes shift ( Δν∼ = 7630 cm −1 ) suggesting that the molecule in the fluorescent state was highly polarized. The present results indicate that phenacenes would provide potential platforms for constructing future functional fluorophores through an appropriate functionalization.

Abstract:Photoinduced electron transfer reactions of flavone (FL) with triethylamine (TEA) in benzene or in acetonitrile gave meso- 2,2′-biflavone 1 and (±)-2,2′-biflavone 2, as well as 2,4′-biflavanoid 3 in good total yield (77% in acetonitrile and 94% in benzene). Solvent polarity effect on product distributions and spin trapping ESR studies of the α-aminoalkyl radicals [ĊH3CHNEt2 and ĊH2N(CH3)Ph] further supported the SET mechanism.

Abstract:A visible‐light‐induced radical tandem difluoroalkylation/cyclization to construct CF2‐containing isoquinolinonedione skeletons with methacryloyl benzamides is developed. Broad substrate scopes are compatible with metal‐, oxidant‐ and photocatalyst‐free conditions under room temperature in good‐to‐excellent yields. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the transformation is initiated by photoinduced electron donor‐acceptor (EDA) complexes formation.

Abstract:Photoinduced Electron Transfer Oxygenations of 4-Arylmethylene-1,3(2H,4H)-isoquinolinediones afforded oxiranes (5a-5c, 6a-6c, 7) and 1, 3, 4-isoquinolinetriones (8 and 9) as major products in high yields in the presence of triethylamine (TEA). These oxygenation reactions are initiated by single electron transfer between photoexcited 4-Arylmethylene-1,3(2H,4H)-isoquinolinediones and TEA, and proceeded via the anion radicals of the substrates.
Aggregation-induced visible light absorption makes reactant 1,2-diisocyanoarenes act as photosensitizers in double radical isocyanide insertions.

Abstract:The joint computational and experimental efforts reveal that the organic molecule 1,2-diisocyano-4,5dimethylbenzene (1) acts as both a reactant and a photosensitizer (PS) in a metal-free reaction with perfluoroalkylhalide (2) to produce 2-perfluoroalkyl quinoxalines (3) under visible light. Both the p-p stacking aggregation in crystals and the solvation in various solvents of PS 1 exhibited visible-light absorption at 466 nm in spite of its smaller coefficient than that of the ultraviolet-light absorption. Such an aggregation-assisted visible-light absorption phenomenon is rationalized by theoretical calculations of the condensed-phase properties with the consideration of the explicit polarization effect from the neighboring molecules. Upon irradiation with different wavelengths, the emission colors changed from navy to bright yellow. Fluorescence lifetime measurements show that the emission of 1 comes from its singlet excited state. The aggregation induced emission when excited at 420 nm has a shorter lifetime (0.45 ns) than that of the emission from isolated molecules (2.71 ns) when excited at 381 nm. It is conceived that the aggregation assisted visible light absorption properties may be general in other photo-reactive molecules, such as 1,4-diisocyano-2,5-dimethylbenzene (4), 1,4-dicyanobenzene (5), and 1,4-diisocyanobenzene (6), which are widely used in many photochemical reactions in the absence of any external photosensitizer.

Abstract:Arnebinones B, E, and D (1-3) have been found to be sensitive to light, generating complex and diverse proton transfer products when triggered by light. A unique two-step irreversible intramolecular proton transfer of 1 produced five scalemic mixtures, of which four possessed intriguing dual planar chirality. The unprecedented orientation epimerization equilibrium of the intra-annular double bond was first observed and researched in the homologous meroterpenoids by HPLC monitoring and DFT calculations. A "p-benzoquinone-CH2/CH-π" moiety in the structure was the common key feature for the occurrence of this type of photoenolization reaction. The product transformation processes and universality of this photoinduced irreversible proton transfer reaction were analyzed together with the cytotoxic activities of arnebinones B, D, and E, and their photoreaction products.

Abstract:Recent advances in photoinduced trifluoromethylation and difluoroalkylation under photocatalysis are summarized. Most of the photoredox reactions proceed efficiently under mild conditions with simple operation. Various fluorinated reagents are developed and applied in different transformations. Usually, the photocatalyst in a photocatalytic cycle is initially stimulated to the excited state in the presence of visible light, which then provides an electron to the fluorinated reagent to release a CF3 radical or CF2 radical. The subsequent radical addition to an unsaturated bond with further transformations would produce the corresponding fluorinated products. Alkenes, alkynes, isocyanides, and arenes are frequently employed as substrates for access to fluorochemicals. The advantages of trifluoromethylation and difluoroalkylation under photocatalysis including mild reaction conditions, good functional group tolerance, and experimental ease will make the approaches attractive for further applications.
