Current status of sharp instrument injuries among medical staff of 28 hospitals in Shandong province

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence of sharp injuries among the medical staff in Shandong province so as to provide scientific evidence for taking effective measures to reduce the incidence of the sharp injuries.METHODS By means of the questionnaire,the incidence of the sharp injuries in 28 hospitals in Shandong province in Oct 2012 was investigated.RESULTS Of totally 46 600 medical staff investigated,7.30% of which experienced the sharp injuries with the average incidence of 9.71 times/ per person.The nurses were the population at high risk of the sharp injuries,accounting for 63.25 %;the sharp injuries mostly occurred in general wards(49.54%) and operating room(18.89%).The scalp syringe needles(34.87%),vein infusion needle(23.18%),and suture needles(8.90%) were major medical devices associated with the sharp injuries;while preparing medication(11.22%),recapping needles(10.32%),and surgical suture(8.77%) were the key links leading to the sharp injuries.With known sources of the injuries,the exposure rate of blood-borne diseases was 3.80%,however,the reporting rate after the injuries was only 15.75%.CONCLUSION The sharp injury is the common occupational hazard among the medical staffs,it is necessary to avoid the unnecessary medical operation,correct the bad habit,and implement the standard protection measures so as to reduce the incidence of sharp injuries.
