Investigation and analysis of sharp instrument injuries in health care workers

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To understand the health care workers′exposure to the sharp instrument injuries so as to provide scientific basis for prevention of the sharp instrument injuries .METHODS By means of questionnaire survey ,the cross sectional survey was conducted for the sharp instrument injuries in the health care workers in Oct 2012 .RESULTS Of the 1 243 health care workers investigated ,at least one time of sharp injuries occurred in 327 participants ,with the incidence rate of 26 .31% ,and the nurses were dominant ,accounting for 10 .83% . Among the health care workers with the sharp injuries ,38 .73% were in the common wards ,20 .42% in the operating rooms .The syringe needles ,scalp vein infusion needles ,and suture needles were the major medical instruments that led to the sharp injuries ,accounting for 38 .03% ,25 .35% ,and 14 .08% ,respectively .The drug dosing ,suture ,and withdrawal of needles were the major operations to cause the sharp injuries ,accounting for 23 .94% ,14 .08% ,and 13 .38% ,respectively .As was known to the exposure sources ,the rate of exposure to blood borne diseases was 4 .76% ,and the rate of report of the sharp injuries was only 3 .17% .CONCLUSIONS The incidence of the sharp instrument injuries is high ,however ,the reporting rate is low ;the health care workers do not pay much attention to the sharp injuries as well as their harm .
