Mediation role of shame-focused coping between shame and depression in high school students

Abstract:Objective: To examine the mediation role of shame-focused coping between shame and depression in high school students.Methods: Two hundred and twenty-two students were selected by convenience sampling and assessed with a series of questionnaires including the Children' s Depression Inventory(CDI),Middle School Students' Shame Scale,and Compass of Shame Scale.Totally 166 participants completed the questionnaires again 6 months later.Results: Longitudinal analyses revealed that attack self coping and attack other coping were two full mediators of the relationship between shame-proneness and depression.Shame-proneness at baseline and attack self account for 19% of the variance in depression 6 months later,while shame-proneness at baseline and attack other account for 13% of the variance in depression 6 months later.Conclusion: These results suggest that shame-focused coping may be important in predicting depression.
