Mediating Effect of Self-perception on the Relationship Between Social Support and Depression

Abstract:Objective: To explore the mediating effect of self-perception on the relationship between social support and depression.Methods: 494 high school students from two high schools in Beijing city were surveyed with questionnaires of "What I Am Like"(WIAL),Social support scale for Adolescents(SSSA) and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale(CES-D).Results: ①Significant positive correlations were found between low social support and low self-perception(r=0.453)and depression(r=0.293);while positive correlations between low self-perception and depression(r=0.553);②The relationship between social support and depression was mediated by self-perception,and the mediating effect was 0.32,which accounted for 86.5% of the total effect.Conclusion: Good social support system is a protective factor to prevent the depression of adolescents,and children with higher social support report higher self-perception,which indicates they are more confident,and induces less depressive symptoms;while children with lower social support report lower self-perception,which implies they are less confident,leading to more depressive symptoms.
