On Watsuji Tetsuro's Study of Ethics from a Chinese Philosophy Perspective

Abstract:Watsuji Tetsuro was an outstanding philosopher in Japan during the twentieth century and ethics was the most important part of his accomplishment.Chinese philosophy,especially Confucianism played a crucial and fundamental role in his life and career.Based on his two important works,Ethics as the Study of Man and Ethics,this paper attempts to show the Chinese philosophy influence of Watsuji's study of ethics by focusing on his establishment of the basic concept of ethics and the description of its contents.Various concepts are described,e.g.,the meanings of the basic conceptions,the ethics from the Chinese philosophy perspective,and the dual-nature of human being as individuals and as a member of various social groupings,and the positive relationship and trust.
