Abstract:Various fertilizers have been widely used in agricultures and horticultures. More than 400 million tons fertilizers are used in the world every year. However,fertilizer cannot be resealed in dry soil, and could be flashed out with heaven rain or irrigation without controlling into river, which results in polluting water resources. Actually, fertilizers have already caused serious pollution for rivers and degeneration of land. Therefore, various controlled release fertilizers have been developed. This paper reviewed development of controlled release fertilizer based on both fundamental issues such as system designing and mechanisms, and materials used for coating as well as their fabrication. So far most of the materials used for coating are synthetic polymeric materials, such as PS, PE etc.,which are not biodegradable. Environmentally friendly biodegradable coatings have attracted increasingly attention,but still in development stage in laboratory. On the other hand, dry and desertification are big challenges for agriculture in China. Using superabsorbent polymers as coating materials could add the function of keeping moisture for the fertilizer, which is particularly important for dry area. It is expected that the superabsorbent polymer coatings could be favorable for crops through helping seed sprout; increasing sprouting ratio, reducing irrigation and enhancing fertilizer efficiency etc.
Preparation of Rosin-Glyceride-coated Fertilizer and Study on Its Slow Release Property

Abstract:The slow release rosin-glyceride-coated fertilizer,using rosin glyceride as coated material and paraffin wax as sealant,was prepared for the first time.And the best coated technics were obtained.The slow release property of coated fertilizer was studied by leaching and soaking method.The results indicated that the slow release property of rosin-glyceride-coated fertilizer sealed by paraffin wax was greatly improved.

Abstract:As a skeleton component of plants, lignin is a kind of organic macromolecule polymer which can be regenerated and naturally degraded. Annually, plant growth produces about 150 billion tons of lignin. In recent industrial processes, large amounts of lignin are remained as by‐products, such as the paper industry and the biomass refining industry. Most of technical lignins were direct combusted to obtain heat, which not only caused by the waste of organic matter, but also led to environmental pollution and other issues. Interestingly, lignin can be used as slow release carriers and coating materials for fertilizers due to its excellent slow release property, chelating, and and other functions. Manufactures of lignin‐based slow/controlled release fertilizer are studied by sustainable chemical (ammoxidation, Mannich reaction, and other chemical modification), coating (without or with chemical modification), and chelation modification. This review systematically summarizes the methods, mechanisms, and application of the above methods for preparing lignin‐based slow/controlled release fertilizers. Although the evaluation standards and methods of lignin‐based slow/controlled release fertilizers are not perfect, it is believed that more and more scholars will pay more attention to them to accelerate the development and application of lignin‐based slow/controlled release fertilizers, so as to improve their relevant standards. In short, there is an urgent need to improve the preparation process of lignin‐based slow/controlled release fertilizer, and apply lignin‐based slow/controlled release fertilizer to production practice as soon as possible.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant renewable aromatic resource on the Earth, which can be used for producing bio-products to support human sustainable development. Due to the dual challenges of resources and environment, how to effectively utilize this kind of abundant, degradable, and renewable natural polymer has attracted great attention. In recent years, there are many studies on lignin-based slow-release fertilizer duo to its excellent slow release properties. As a carrier of nutrients, lignin-based physically impeded fertilizer can be realized by absorbing and wrapping nutrients, and lignin-based chemically modified fertilizer can be realized by chemical reaction between lignin and nutrients. In this paper, we reviewed the application of lignin in preparation of slow-release fertilizer. The possible pathways and release mechanisms of physically impeded and chemically modified slow-release fertilizer were discussed. Although there was no uniform evaluation standard for slow-release fertilizer, its three common evaluation criteria were analyzed. With the expansion of the function of slow-release fertilizer, the evaluation system should be broadened and diversified. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of lignin-based slow-release fertilizer were discussed. The application of lignin-based slow-release fertilizer has great potential for promoting resource utilization and environmental protection.

Lignin-based controlled release fertilizers: A review

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant renewable aromatic resource on the planet, and it may be exploited to make the controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) that aid in human sustainable agriculture. Many researches on lignin-based CRFs have been conducted in recent years because of their exceptional controlled-release qualities. Lignin-based physically impeded CRFs can be produced by absorbing or wrapping nutrients and act as a longtime nutrient carrier, while chemically modified and chelated CRFs are produced by changing lignin structure to produce more active site and interaction between lignin and nutrients. In this review, lignin is evaluated on the basis of the manufacturing of various types of CRFs. The processes of lignin-based coated, chemically modified and chelated CRFs as well as lignin hydrogel-based CRFs are systematically summarized. Moreover, the general mechanism for controlled release of lignin-based CRFs is discussed. Finally, three common evaluation criteria of lignin-based CRFs efficiency are proposed. Overall, the use of lignin-based CRFs has the potential to greatly enhance resource efficiency and environmental protection.
Nutrient controlled release performance of bio-based coated fertilizer enhanced by synergistic effects of liquefied starch and siloxane

Abstract:The porous structure and hydrophilicity of coating shells affect the nutrient controlled-release performance of castor oil-based (CO) coated fertilizers. In order to solve these problems, in this study, the castor oil-based polyurethane (PCU) coating material was modified with liquefied starch polyol (LS) and siloxane, and a new coating material with cross-linked network structure and hydrophobic surface was synthesized, and used it to prepare the coated controlled-release urea (SSPCU). The results demonstrated that the cross-linked network formed by LS and CO improved the density and reduced the pores on the surface of the coating shells. The siloxane was grafted on the surface of coating shells to improve its hydrophobicity and thus delayed water entry. The nitrogen release experiment indicated that the synergistic effects of LS and siloxane improved the nitrogen controlled-release performance of bio-based coated fertilizers. Nutrient released longevity of SSPCU with 7 % coating percentage reached >63 days. Moreover, the nutrient release mechanism of coated fertilizer was further revealed by the analysis of the release kinetics analysis. Therefore, the results of this study provide a new idea and technical support for development of efficient and environment-friendly bio-based coated controlled-release fertilizers.

Abstract:The natural zeolite was used as wrapping reagent and tetraethyl orthosilicate as adhesive to link layers of zeolite,and thus the compound fertilizer of zeolite coated nitrogenous,potassium and phosphate fertilizers were prepared in different dispersants.The characterization of functional groups of the samples were performed with infrared spectrum.The controlled property was tested by means of drop-leaching experiment.The results show that the zeolite exhibits slowly releasing effect for the nitrogenous and potassium fertilizers.However,the zeolite promotes the release of the phosphate fertilizer,with the tetraethyl orthosilicate as binder cover of controlled release fertilizer effect is good.

Abstract:Vegetable-oil-based polyurethane has become a promising sustainable candidate for controlled-release fertilizer based on green chemistry. The purpose of this study was to prepare a series of coatings from selective feedstocks including five vegetable oils with a high saturation degree, mono-unsaturation degree, or poly-unsaturation degree, considering that vegetable oil fatty acids played a key role in the synthesis of polyol and polyurethane. The effect of the type and proportion of fatty acids on the physicochemical properties, microstructure, and macro-properties of vegetable-oil-derived polyols and their resulting coatings was characterized and discussed. The position and number of the hydroxy groups were determined by the type and proportion of fatty acid, and polyol from linseed oil with a high poly-unsaturation degree and three carbon–carbon double bonds had a high hydroxyl value and functionality, whereas polyol from palm oil with a high saturation degree possessed the lowest hydroxyl value and functionality. The resultant coating from linseed-oil-based polyol had a good cross-linking density, and the nitrogen release longevity of coated urea was 56 days at a coating percentage of 3%, and its nitrogen use efficiency was increased by 27.15% compared with conventional urea. Although the palm-oil-based coating had good hydrophobicity, its coated urea was not ideal. Overall, this study has enriched theories of bio-based polyurethane coatings for controlled-release fertilizers; using vegetable oil with a poly-unsaturation degree, it is easy to obtain an excellent coating for controlled-release fertilizer, and this will help provide economic and environmental benefits.

Preparation and characterization of liquefied eggplant branch bio-based controlled-release fertilizer

Abstract:Bio-based coating materials have received increased attention because of their low-cost, environmentally friendly, and sustainable properties. In this paper, a novel coating material was developed to coat ureas using bio-based coating material derived from liquefied eggplant branches to form controlled-release ureas (CRUs). Also, the optimum proportion of liquefier was studied. Furthermore, dimethyl siloxane was used to modify liquified eggplant branches to make them hydrophobic, resulting in hydrophobic controlled-release ureas (SCRUs). This hydrophobic-enabled coating is environmentally friendly and highly efficient. The products were characterized by specific scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry, and the water contact angles of CRUs and SCRUs were determined. The nutrient-release characteristics of the SCRUs in water were determined at 25 °C and compared with those of CRUs. The results showed that the modification with dimethyl siloxane reduced the N release rate and increased the longevity of the fertilizer coated with hydrophobic bio-based coating material. In addition, organosilicon atoms on the SCRU surface also block the micro-holes on the coating and thus reduce the entry of water onto the coating. The results suggest that the new coating technology can create a hydrophobic surface on bio-based coating material and thus improve their controlled-release characteristics.

Abstract:Castor oil has been developed rapidly as a bio-based coating material for controlled-release fertilizers. However, the release characteristics of coated fertilizers are limited because the coating materials are hydrophilic with many micropores. To improve the surface hydrophobicity of coating materials, superhydrophobic halloysite nanotubes (SHTs) were fabricated by hydrolytic condensation of siloxane on the surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). SHTs were used to modify the castor oil-based polyurethane (SHPU) to enhance the surface nanoscale roughness and reduce surface energy. Compared with a PU-coated fertilizer (PUC), the nitrogen-release properties of the hydrophobic PU-coated fertilizer (SHPUC) were improved significantly. This improvement was because the nanoscale surface roughness and hydrophobicity of SHPU increased the water contact angle, and the micropores on the surface were blocked by nanotubes and hindered water entrance into the coating. This method of hydrophobic modified coating materials could provide a new idea for development of high efficiency and environmentally friendly bio-based coated controlled-release fertilizer and sustainable development of agriculture.

Abstract:Reducing the use of petrochemical products in coated controlled-release fertilizers while regulating the release rate is a popular research topic in the field of controlled-release fertilizers. In this study, a novel biobased polyurethane (BPU), epoxy resin (ER), and polyolefin wax (PW) composite coating method for the controlled release of urea was successfully established. The method involved: (1) the use of PW as a modified inner coating, which improved fertilizer surface performance and reduced urea surface roughness; (2) the degradable BPU film was synthesized with liquefied starch (LS) as the outer coating material; and (3) epoxy resin is a protective layer, which improved the hydrophobicity of the coated urea for controlled release. The chemical structure, thermostability and microscopic morphology of composite-coated urea (CCU) were examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. A central composite design of response surface methodology was used to examine the effects of different film percentage, PW contents, and BPU/ER ratios on nutrient release behavior. The results showed that PW optimized the fluidity, thermal insulation properties, and microscopic surface of the particles and improved the uniformity of the heating of urea. When the same amount of ER was used, the CCU showed a 3-fold increase in the release period compared to that of the cross-linked interpenetrating coated urea. Polynomial mathematical models were established for CCU preparation and could be an effective tool for manufacturing CCUs with specific nutrient release characteristics that could meet the nutrient requirements of crops in different cropping systems. The new coating method introduced in this study could guide the development of a new generation of biobased controlled-release fertilizers.

A biodegradable multifunctional pectin-montmorillonite fertilizer coating: Controlled-release, water-retention and soil-cementation

Abstract:Coated fertilizers have been widely used to improve fertility in barren land. However, improving soil structure and water-retention capacity is also essential for arid and semi-arid areas with sandy soils to promote crop growth. Most currently available coated fertilizers rarely meet these requirements, limiting their application scope. Therefore, this study "tailored" pectin-montmorillonite (PM) multifunctional coatings for arid areas, featuring intercalation reactions and nanoscale entanglement between pectin and montmorillonite via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic and van der Waals forces. Notably, PM coatings have demonstrated an effective "relay" model of action. First, the PM-50 coating could act as a "shield" to protect urea pills, increasing the mechanical strength (82.12 %). Second, this coating prolonged the release longevity of urea (<0.5 h to 15 days). Further, the remaining coating performed a water-retention function. Subsequently, the degraded coating improved the soil properties. Thus, this coating facilitated the growth of wheat seedlings in a simulated arid environment. Moreover, the cytotoxicity test, life cycle assessment, and soil biodegradation experiment showed that the PM coating exhibited minimal environmental impact. Overall, the "relay" model of PM coating overcomes the application limitations of traditional coated fertilizers and provides a sustainable strategy for developing coating materials in soil degradation areas.

Abstract:Chemical fertilizer has become a necessary condition for increasing the production and income of agricultural products in modern agriculture. However, excessive fertilization and fertilizer leakage could cause environmental pollution. To improve the utilization rate of agricultural fertilizers and reduce environmental pollution, the degradability of slow‐release fertilizers (SRFs) has become a research hotspot. In this work, a double‐layer coating material of slow‐release fertilizer was fabricated using low‐cost polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and methylcellulose (MC) as the inner coating materials, and attapulgite was doped into super absorbent polymer poly acrylic acid (PAA) and polyacrylamide (PAM) grafted natural biodegradable lignin as the outer coating materials. We investigated the chemical structures, mechanical properties, hydrophilic properties, and water retention properties of the double‐layer coating material coated on the surface of urea particles, and optimized the synthesis parameters to obtain the best water absorption properties of the outer layer water absorbent. Simultaneously, urea release was evaluated in dissolution experiments. The results show that at the PVA concentration of 5 wt% and the MC addition amount of 2.0 g, the performance indicators of the inner coating liquid were better than other contents. At the same time, more urea molecules (>30 days) were released in the single‐layer and double‐coated fertilizers, and the cumulative release rates of urea molecules were 92.36% and 85.10%, respectively. Therefore, this work provides research ideas for the preparation of double‐coated slow‐release fertilizers, which can improve soil water retention and fertilizer utilization.

Abstract:Biochar-based fertilizers show promise in enhancing nutrient utilization and soil health, but their slow-release performance remains a challenge. Herein, hydrogel membranes incorporating iron oxide nanoparticles within a polyvinyl alcohol and starch matrix (Fe/PVA/ST) were synthesized. These membranes were utilized to coat compound fertilizer particles, with biochar powder applied to the outer layer to form what is known as Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs. The results revealed that Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs exhibit markedly improved slow-release performance compared to both PVA/ST-BSRFs lacking iron nanoparticles and commercial compound fertilizers. Within a 30-day period, the cumulative leaching ratios of N, P, and K from Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs with 0.75 % iron content were significantly lower compared to other tested fertilizers, with values of 22.87 %, 34.93 %, and 84.08 %, respectively. Furthermore, the incorporation of iron oxide nanoparticles into the PVA/ST membrane enhanced its swelling and water-retention properties without compromising its biodegradability. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the exceptional slow-release properties of Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs stem from a combination of nutrient diffusion control outside the membrane and the loose control mechanism of the membrane. Pot tests demonstrated that Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs effectively promoted the growth of chili plants while ensuring high utilization of N-P-K and improving the nutritional indices of chili fruits. Economic analysis further underscored the promising application prospects of Fe/PVA/ST-BSRFs.

Nitrogen Release of Plant Oil-coated Urea and Its Effects on Nutrient Uptake of Ryegrass(Lolium Perenne L.)

Abstract:In this paper,two kinds of coated urea(POU1 and POU2) were prepared with plant oil used as environment-friendly film materials.A continuous dissolution test with three replications was carried out to determining nitrogen release of POU1 and POU2,using a commercial coated urea as the control.A pot experiment was conducted with perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne L.) for identifying the effects of the newly prepared two coated urea(POU1 and POU2) on nutrient uptake and nitrogen use efficiency.The pot experiment had six treatments such as no fertilizer(CK),no nitrogen fertilizer(PK),normal urea(NU),commercial coated urea(CCU),POU1 and POU2.The results of the continuous dissolution test showed that the cumulative amounts of released nitrogen of POU1,POU2 were significantly lower than that of CCU(P0.05),and POU2 was significantly lower than that of POU1(P0.05).With the same doses of nitrogen application,shoot nitrogen concentrations of POU2 treatment were higher than these of NU treatment,the difference was significant in some cases(P0.05).After three harvest,the total biomass and the amounts of nitrogen,phosphorus,potassium accumulated in shoots of POU1 and POU2 treatments were significantly larger than these of NU treatment(P0.05).It was also obtained that the apparent nitrogen use efficiency of POU1 and POU2 treatments were significantly higher than that of NU treatment(P0.05) or CCU treatment.Plant oil-coated urea,especially POU2,could improve nitrogen status of ryegrass plant,increase nitrogen,phosphorus and potassium uptake in shoots,and promote plant growth.It is concluded plant oil can be used as a coating material,and the plant oil-coated urea is regarded as a new slow release urea.
Crosslinking using particulate crosslinker in polymer latex film-coating process for controlled-release fertilizer

Abstract:Fertilizing controlled-release fertilizer is apt to keep a reasonable concentration of nutrient in soil and increase the efficiency of fertilizer utilization. The production of film-coated controlled-release fertilizer using polymer latex is a green process. However, the release period is usually short because the film crosslinking density is low during the fast film formation of the dynamic granule coating. In this study, numerous epoxy groups were grafted onto the nanoparticle surface of single-particle-dispersed silica to prepare particulate crosslinker with abundant crosslinking sites. The epoxy groups on the surface of the particulate crosslinker reacted with the carboxyl groups on the surface of the styrene-acrylate latex particles during film formation, enhancing film crosslinking. With the addition of the particulate crosslinker, the polymer latex was used to coat urea granules in a fluidized bed via spray coating at a low coating content of 4 wt%. The release period of film-coated urea granules with an enhanced crosslinking film reached 40 d, which was five times longer than that in the absence of particulate crosslinker.

Abstract:A slow-release fertilizer is important to improve soil conditions and enhances food security through continuous plant supply. With urea as a nitrogen source, kaolin as a carrier, acrylic acid as a reaction monomer, potassium persulfate as an initiator, N, N '- methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinking agent, under the action of cyclohexane and sorbitan monostearate, kaolin based slow-release fertilizer was synthesized by reverse suspension method for the first time. The optimum conditions for the synthesized polymer were 0.6 g kaolin, 2 g urea and 80 °C temperature. The maximum water absorption capacity of the slow-release fertilizer was as high as 219.75 g/g. The water retention performance lasted for at least 10 days, and the slow-release property lasted for at least 28 days. The release of nitrogen content was slow and stable. The FTIR analysis indicated that the cross-linking occurred between kaolin, urea, and resin meanwhile, the SEM analysis supported that the product had a special network structure with a rough and porous surface. TGA analysis confirmed the stability of the kaolin-based slow-release fertilizer. The findings fully validated that the synthesis method of slow-release fertilizer was feasible and has the potential to be a popular commercialized product be popularized in areas lacking water or fertilizer.
